If you've ever caught yourself saying, I don't have time, I'm not good at business, I'll start next year, or I've already tried that and it didn't work... this episode is for you. Today I'm calling out the six biggest excuses keeping photographers stuck. Because the truth is, your camera isn't the problem. Your editing isn't the problem. Your talent isn't the problem. Your excuses are. In this episode, I'm breaking down the lies we tell ourselves that feel productive, responsible, or even logical, but are quietly costing us bookings, confidence, momentum, and ultimately... six figures. I'm sharing the mindset shifts that helped me build financial freedom after my life completely fell apart, and why waiting for the perfect time, consuming endless free content, or quitting after one failed attempt will keep you exactly where you are. This episode is packed with tough love, real talk, and practical perspective that will challenge the way you think about your business and the woman running it. In this episode, we'll cover: Why "I don't have time" is usually a prioritization problem. The identity shift from photographer to CEO. Why there is no such thing as the "right time." The hidden cost of free education and information overload. Why consistency beats talent every single time. How to stop collecting excuses and start building the business you actually want. If you're ready to stop playing small, stop waiting, and start taking ownership of your success, this episode is your wake-up call. Bye for now, Posers. Yes. I am quoting Vanilla Ice. Yes, it shows my age. I don't care. Because before you roll your eyes and keep scrolling... I need you to actually stop and listen to what I'm about to say. This might be the most important conversation we've had on this podcast yet. Your ideal clients are out there right now. They are spending money. They are trusting other businesses with their time, their attention, and their wallets. And they have absolutely no idea you exist. Not because your work isn't good enough. Not because your prices are too high. Not because the market is too saturated. Because you are waiting to be found instead of going where they already are. This episode isn't about strategy. I'm not handing you a script today. What I AM doing is dismantling the mindset that is quietly keeping your business smaller than it deserves to be — because no amount of strategy works until this part does. We're talking about fear. Rejection. What it actually costs you to stay invisible. And why Jen Gottlieb is right when she says that being found isn't just a goal — it's your responsibility. The how is coming. And when it does, it's going to change everything. But first — we fix the brain. Tits up and ears open. I was supposed to go to Lowe's. My husband and I were out running errands and I remembered that Grouse House an antique and vintage home goods warehouse that an interior design client had been telling me about for weeks was having a sale. So I made an executive decision that a Saturday at a gorgeous warehouse full of vintage European furniture sounded a lot better than a Saturday looking at plastic planters under fluorescent lighting. I did not expect to spend a thousand dollars. I also did not expect to walk out with a collaboration in the works, a lunch date on the calendar, and a Matriarch session booked. But that's what happened. And in this episode I'm walking you through the whole thing the DMs, the content, the collab pitch that happened mid-candle-order because I think the way it unfolded is more useful to you than any strategy I could draw up on a whiteboard. I also want to talk about something my girl Laura Stansberry brought up in my Posers membership when I shared this story, because she named a pattern that I know a lot of you are stuck in too, where you try to do a collaboration, end up giving away a free session, get one post out of it, and never hear from them again. That's not a collaboration. And by the end of this episode you'll know exactly what the difference is. Here's what we're getting into: Why I've always treated every room I walk into as a room full of my next clients and how that mindset was born when I was shooting weddings The behind-the-scenes content habit that has done more for my personal brand than any portfolio post ever has What actually happened at Grouse House and why the alignment between our businesses made everything easy The real DMs including the part where I pitched a collaboration in the same message where I was ordering a candle How the Matriarch session got booked without a single sales conversation The difference between a collaboration and an influencer deal (this one is important) A 7-step playbook you can take and use in your own market today This is one of those episodes where the story is the strategy. I hope it makes you want to get your boots on the ground. Apparently we're having a Pratt Boy Summer. Not because Spencer Pratt should be mayor of Los Angeles. But because he accidentally became one of the most fascinating marketing case studies I've seen all year. After stumbling across a breakdown of his campaign, I realized something that photographers, business owners, and creators need to hear:The market doesn't always reward the most qualified person. It rewards the person people can't stop talking about. In this episode, we're unpacking cult psychology, audience building, attention economics, reality television, Taylor Swift, Apple, political campaigns, and why Spencer Pratt seems to understand something about human behavior that most business owners completely miss. We'll talk about belonging, common enemies, shared language, building a world around your brand, and the surprising reason some people become impossible to ignore while others stay invisible despite having more talent, experience, and expertise. And yes...We're also talking about the confidence of a mediocre white man.Tits up and ears open. Over Mother’s Day weekend, I forced my boys to watch The Devil Wears Prada with me… and somewhere between the marble countertops, Milan fashion houses, and casual “weekend at Lake Como” energy, I realized this movie perfectly explains luxury psychology. Because luxury buying behavior is not just about money. It’s about aspiration, belonging, identity, status, emotional experience, and the environments we’re invited into. In this episode, I’m unpacking:• Why humans are naturally wired to aspire upward• The psychology behind luxury buying behavior• Why people buy within the environment you create for them• How photographers accidentally cap their own revenue• Why trying to drastically raise your prices overnight will tank your business• The difference between simply charging more and creating a buying environment that supports higher spending• Why your current “budget clients” may actually be capable of spending far more than you realize I also share a real story involving two clients from the exact same affluent private school — one who thought nobody would ever spend $5K on senior photos… and another who spent $5,500 without blinking. Same level of wealth. Completely different buying environment. And honestly? That story alone might completely change how you think about pricing, luxury, and client psychology. If you’ve ever wondered how photographers create high-ticket sales without alienating their current clients… this episode is your proof. Luxury is not an all-white studio and a good logo. In part two of this luxury series, I’m diving into the thing photographers overlook the most when trying to attract higher-end clients: the client journey. Because luxury is rarely one big dramatic thing. It’s usually a thousand tiny details working together to make people feel taken care of. In this episode, we’re talking about: • Why affluent clients are really buying emotional certainty • The subtle details that increase perceived value • Hospitality, presentation, and why your energy matters more than you think • The difference between “expensive” and truly luxurious • Why some brands simply feel elevated from the very first interactionI’m also sharing the story behind the highest sale I’ve ever had inside of my studio… which happened right in the middle of recording this luxury series. Funny how that works. If you’ve ever wondered why some photographers feel instantly premium before you even inquire… this episode is going to connect a lot of dots. This episode came straight from a DM with a photographer who’s ready to move into a higher-end market but isn’t sure how to make that shift without losing her current clients. We’re breaking down what luxury actually means (hint: it’s not just a higher price tag), how to research your specific market instead of guessing, and why your client experience starts the moment someone inquires. But the real focus? Your portfolio. We’re talking about the difference between “good” images and images that reflect taste… how to study art in a way that actually translates to modern portrait photography… and what affluent clients are really noticing in your work. We also dive into curation—on your website and your Instagram—and how small inconsistencies, outdated content, or lack of intention can quietly shift perception. This is about refining, not adding. Because luxury isn’t louder… it’s more intentional. Do you remember that Febreze commercial with the teenage boys who couldn’t smell their own room? Yeah… that’s your marketing. In this episode, I’m calling out something that most photographers don’t even realize they’re doing… and it’s quietly killing your ability to book. You’ve been in this industry for so long that you’ve started filtering out the exact things that would make clients trust you. You’re posting what impresses other photographers… instead of what actually converts your clients. And the worst part? The thing that would make you stand out… is the exact thing you’ve stopped talking about. I’m breaking down: What “photography blindness” actually looks like in your content Why your marketing might all be starting to sound the same The subtle ways you’re accidentally making yourself look replaceable What your clients actually need to hear from you to trust you And how to shift your content so it builds authority instead of just getting likes This is one of those episodes that might sting a little… but once you see it, you can’t unsee it. And when you fix it? That’s when your marketing actually starts working. I just got back from the Dominican… and I accidentally walked straight into a live masterclass on sales psychology. We booked a private boat charter. It came with a photographer. And within five minutes… I knew exactly how this was going to go.What I didn’t expect? Was that this man — posing every couple the exact same way, running what most photographers would call a “cringey” shoot — would absolutely clean up in sales. And not by accident. In this episode, I break down everything I observed in real time:• The identical posing formula he used on every single couple (and why it didn’t hurt his sales)• The emotional manipulation tactic he saved specifically for the women — and why it worked• How he controlled the room without anyone realizing it• Why “better photography” does NOT equal more money• The subtle moments where he anchored value before anyone ever saw a price• And the biggest mistake photographers make when they rely on their work to do the selling This episode isn’t about judging his work. It’s about understanding human behavior. Because he wasn’t selling photos. He was selling emotion, urgency, and identity. And if you can’t do that… it doesn’t matter how good your work is.
