Well, thank you for coming with me to have you here on the couch.

Thank y' all for having me.

Of course. So we gonna start from the beginning. You know what I'm saying? Like, how did you get into rapping? Like, did you always wanna be a rapper, or was it something that was just, like, thrown upon you?

[Honcho]

I ain't always wanted to be a rapper, but I wanted to be a rapper for a long time, probably since I was, like, 17. It's something I just tried, and I liked it, so I just kept doing it.

[Lex P]

When did you realize, like, okay, you know what? I'm kind of good at this.

[Honcho]

When I made my first song.

[Lex P]

Your first song?

[Honcho]

Yeah.

[Lex P]

I feel like a lot of times when people listen to their first song, they be like, oh, my God, this was horrible.

[Honcho]

Yeah. Yeah. When I listen to it now, it's horrible.

[Lex P]

Yeah, okay.

[Honcho]

Back then, it was cool.

[Lex P]

Yeah, okay.

[Dre Nicole]

It was like, I'm on to something.

[Lex P]

Yeah. So talk about, like, growing up, like, where you grew up. Cause you're from New York before.

[Dre Nicole]

He grew up on the east side of Atlanta.

[Lex P]

East side?

[Dre Nicole]

Yeah, the east side. So how do you feel like that has shaped, like, your music influence and how you rap or the type of music that you put out?

[Honcho]

I say it shaped it a lot. Cause I rap about, like, how I used to rap about how I grew up and where I come from, and I just put it in my music. So I started rapping about relationship stuff.

[Lex P]

That's why the girls love Hunch Up. When I first moved to Atlanta, I moved on the east side. I was Scared.

[Dre Nicole]

You did used to live on the east side.

[Lex P]

I lived on the opposite side.

[Dre Nicole]

I live off of Morland.

[Lex P]

I was in the trenches. That's the trenches, right?

[Honcho]

Morland? Yeah, yeah, probably.

[Lex P]

Yeah, it was the trenches.

[Honcho]

I a. I'm not from. I'm from like, like Glenwood area.

[Lex P]

Oh, okay. You deeper down in there. Oh, that's real. Okay. So talk about like your breakthrough single, let's get it and how that came about.

[Honcho]

Let's get it is like I just really wanted to try something different. I had found that beat on YouTube. I was going through YouTube beats. It was probably the last song I was going in my session. I probably made like some songs that they last song I made and I tried a different beat, a different flow.

[Lex P]

Yeah.

[Honcho]

And they had just caught onto it. I probably did my. I think my first show was in. My first show with that song was in Albany. And then I ain't even know it was going that crazy. But when I did my show in Albany, I seen all the fans just rapping and going crazy.

[Lex P]

Yeah.

[Honcho]

And then I ended up putting 21 on there.

[Lex P]

I know that's right. That was my song. Now do you. Are you the kind of person, like when you have your studio sessions, it be like a bunch of people in there and it's a lot going on, or are you one of the people who like a small session with nobody in there?

[Honcho]

Now my sessions be like basically just me. Yeah, just me and another person. But when I like, I probably started doing that like a year ago, all my sessions used to be deep. We used to be like 30, 40 deep in my session.

[Lex P]

Just in there cutting up.

[Dre Nicole]

Did you stop? Cause you feel like that was like distracting you and you wanted to lock in more.

[Honcho]

I stopped. Cause I couldn't like for some reason I just couldn't rap for real. Like every time I started going to the studio, I couldn't get nothing out. Cause I used to make like eight songs in a session. Then I couldn't rap at all. I couldn't make nail songs. So I just started going by myself.

[Lex P]

Are you shy?

[Dre Nicole]

A little bit.

[Lex P]

I can tell you're very soft spoke. You are.

[Dre Nicole]

Don't be nervous.

I know that's right.

[Honcho]

Okay, so you said a lot of your music comes from like your lived experiences. What's one lesson that you learned, I guess in the streets or like on the east side of Atlanta that has influenced a lot of your music?

[Honcho]

Like a listen.

[Dre Nicole]

Like that has shaped you as a person and influenced the way you make your music.

[Honcho]

I ain't gonna say no listen, but I just try to really, like not listen to too many people. Like, I don't really take too much advice. I just go out of my mind and do what I do.

[Lex P]

Yeah. Okay, that's understandable.

[Dre Nicole]

That is. Yeah.

[Lex P]

Do you feel like being in the industry now? Like, I'm pretty sure, like you just want to do your music and make your money. But do you think it's strange that people are so interested, like in your personal life and like, how do you balance that?

[Honcho]

I ain't gonna say it's. I ain't gonna say it's strange. Cause that's what come with it.

[Dre Nicole]

Yeah.

[Honcho]

But I ain't smelling it. Like I don't like it.

[Lex P]

Yeah.

[Honcho]

That's how I gotta be.

[Lex P]

Yeah. Have you always been like a ladies man? Cause the girls love you down. Cause we have a large female fan base that listen to us and they been asking about you for a long time.

[Dre Nicole]

Yeah, they be in the comments every week.

[Honcho]

I ain't gonna say always. Girls ain't used to like me. For real.

[Lex P]

Why not me, huh?

[Honcho]

Nah, I wasn't me. I just ain't have a lot. I want the freshest kid in the school, this kid in the school, you.

Know, it's like on some. Back then, they didn't want me, not.

[Dre Nicole]

My job, on me.

[Lex P]

I know, that's right. You better to tell them hoes and kick rocks. No, that's right. So talk about like now, like how you feel like, because it's hard to stay relevant in the industry. So like, do you feel that pressure to like keep making hit after hit or are you just like, you know what I'm doing? What's coming from the heart?

[Honcho]

It be like certain periods sometimes, like when I be seeing stuff like they telling me drop, it'd be like, oh, I gotta drop a hit. And sometimes I be like, I just need to drop my music. And they catch on to what they catch on to. That's how I really caught all my hits. I was just dropping back to back to back and they were just catching on to what they caught on to. But right now it's like I'm trying to perfect all my music. I'm trying to make everything a hit.

[Lex P]

Yeah.

[Dre Nicole]

Since you've had so many hits, do you ever feel pressure to keep coming out with more hits?

[Honcho]

Yeah, yeah, most definitely. Cause I can't give them something that they love and then give them Some bullshit.

[Lex P]

Yeah.

I gotta give him the hard shit.

You don't drink, which is good. That is good, Auntie Proud of you now. But is there, like, an incident, like, did something happen to where you was like, nah, I can't drink no more.

I never drunk in my life.

Like, you just never even wanted to try. You was never even curious.

[Honcho]

Nah. Cause I see what it do to people, and I be tripping, like. Well, I used to be tripping, and I just feel like I'd do something dumb if I get drunk.

I know that's right. Cause you finna see what it's gonna do to me after about two more of these. You finna see Aunt Cho.

And is it also influenced by your religion? Cause you Muslim too, right?

[Honcho]

Nah, not for real.

I grew up. My whole life, I was Muslim. I grew up Muslim. I was born Muslim. Mama, daddy, granddaddy.

Everybody Muslim, My whole family. What? You know, as a kid, you want to try stuff?

[Lex P]

You gotta clean it out. Cause it's the intestines. It be a little. You know what's in the Texas. Yeah, you got to clean that motherfucker out.

I have a question, though. So being in the industry, do you feel like it's been hard to, to some extent, to stay true to, like, your religious beliefs? Does it ever affect that?

[Honcho]

Probably only cause what I'm rapping about. Yeah, like, it's like, I'll be sins.

[Lex P]

Yeah, yeah.

[Honcho]

That's the only thing. And then, like, temptation. Like. But I don't drink, though, with girl. I don't smoke either.

[Dre Nicole]

Temptation of girls.

[Honcho]

The females.

[Lex P]

Oh, that's right. I know they. Oh, y. They trying to hunch. They know what they want. They know what they want. Have you ever had a real job? Like, where you clocked in somewhere?

[Honcho]

Nah, I got a job for a day. Like, people that go. I went to jail. After my first time going to jail, my P.O. like, you gotta get a job or we gonna send you back. So I ended up getting a job. I left. I quit after the first day of training. We were supposed to go to people's doors and sell vacuum cleaner. I never made.

[Lex P]

You was a salesman.

[Dre Nicole]

Oh, you had one of them jobs? I used to sell insurance.

[Honcho]

I want no sales.

[Lex P]

He said, hell, no, it's too high.

[Honcho]

Quit after the first day.

[Lex P]

I believe you didn't make it through the first day.

[Honcho]

I couldn't do it.

[Lex P]

That's correct.

[Honcho]

But I always told myself, I ain't want no job, though. Yeah, Always. I never want no job.

[Dre Nicole]

I feel like everybody has a little story like that where they had one of them jobs where they was like, going door to door trying to sell something either. They worked for the knife company, vacuum cleaner company, insurance.

[Lex P]

I never did.

[Dre Nicole]

You didn't?

[Lex P]

No, I never did that. I was the fast food girl. I worked at all the places. I worked at Sonic in high school, it was like a pizza place. I can't even remember the name of it that I worked at in high school. I used to, you know, have a fat. And then I taught dance a little bit. Like, I had a lot of different, you know, little one twos. Okay.

[Honcho]

Thing with me, though, I ain't want to wait all week to get my. Like, work all week, then wait till Friday to get my money. Yeah, I'm impatient. I like fast money.

[Dre Nicole]

Yeah, you like, if I'm working today, I need my money today.

[Lex P]

You know, it's crazy when I had a job, though. Cause I'm old. When I was working my checks, we got paid minimum wage. I was making 5, 15 an hour. That was minimum wage. So I was waiting, like, two weeks for, like, $250.

[Dre Nicole]

But back then, $250 went a long way. I was bald when you was in High School. $250 for a week.

[Honcho]

For $250?

No, two weeks.

But I actually don't think that's bad advice. Cause I do think more people should do that. More people should go off of their good instinct. Because I feel like a lot of the time you already know what you need to do. You just looking for confirmation from somebody else.

I am currently in college and have found myself being put into multiple situationships that don't go anywhere, despite me initiating a conversation in the beginning stating that I am wanting to get in a serious relationship. Eventually, whoever I'm pursuing will agree with that, but then turn around and not want to commit. For example, not too long ago, I was dating a woman for six months. I eventually took her out and asked her to be my girlfriend formally, but she denied me and said that I was moving way too fast. Is that too soon to ask for someone to be your girlfriend? Also, in terms of dating in college, did y' all take it seriously and should I.

Yeah. But I do feel like, to answer his question, I do feel like you people need to align with who they're aligned with. Six months with somebody, maybe for her, that probably is quick. So she's a slow burner, and that'll work for her, but that doesn't work for you. So I feel like you just haven't aligned with the right person. Now I do feel like college is like your age where you supposed to figure out what you like. But some people find the love of their lives at a very young age. So I just think continue to have fun, but don't put so much pressure on yourself to find that person. Continue to date until something sticks.

Yeah, I agree. And sometimes I feel like if somebody tell you no, they just not your person. If they not interested, just take that as a sign that that's not the person that you supposed to be with and God got something better for you.
