Pray the Word with David Platt is a resource from radical.net I want to read the first seven verses of Proverbs so Proverbs 1:1:7 and just listen as I read to all the things that these verses lead us to pray for and then I am just going to go right into praying for them. Sometimes we come across passages where it is just I need to pray exactly what this passage says and it does not need any explanation. It just needs petition and intercession to pray for these things in our lives, to pray for these things in others lives. So let's just listen to these words and then pray directly according to them. Proverbs 1:1 the Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, King of Israel. To know wisdom and instruction to understand words of insight. To receive instruction in wise dealing in righteousness, justice and equity. To give prudence to the simple knowledge and discretion to the youth. Let the wise hear and increase in learning and the one who understands obtain guidance to understand a proverb and a saying. The words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Fools despise wisdom and instruction. O God, we pray right now for all of these things in our lives, in the lives of the people around us, family members, friends, church, family God, we pray that you would help us to know wisdom and instruction. We pray for that in our lives today, knowing you promised to give us these things when we ask, and specifically we're asking according to your word. We pray for wisdom instruction. We pray for understanding of words of insight. We pray for instruction from your spirit in wise dealing all day long today for instruction in righteousness. We pray for instruction from you. Injustice. We pray for instruction from you in equity God. We pray for prudence. We pray that you would help us to be humble, simple children today receiving prudence from you. We pray for knowledge and discretion to the youth. God. We pray specifically for those who are younger, for knowledge and discretion to fill them, to guard them from folly. We pray that over kids, teenagers, students, young adults. We pray for knowledge and discretion for them. We pray for wisdom to listen to hear and humility to increase in learning. Today we want to learn today we want to learn more about who you are, who we are, how to glorify you and experience life to the full in this world. Help us to learn today. We pray for guidance and understanding and God at the core of all of this. We pray that you would teach us to fear you, to honor and glorify and worship, to live in praise and awe of who you are and flowing from fear of you. We pray for knowledge and wisdom and instruction that come from you. Oh God, we pray we want all these things in Proverbs 1:1:7 and we praise you O God for your generosity to give us all these things when we ask. So thank you God, thank you for your generosity. And God as we pray we pray for people who don't know you and don't have your Word. In this way we think about all the people groups in the world that don't have your revelation in your Word in their language. God we pray that that would change. God we pray that you would bless all those who are working on Bible translations so that all the peoples might experience this good news that wisdom and instruction and righteousness and justice and knowledge is available freely to all those who fear you and know you and trust in you as Savior and Lord. Oh God. We pray all these things straight from your word which we love in Jesus name in the name of the one who first Corinthians 1, verse 30 says we are in and he has become to us your wisdom. Wisdom from you. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
Episode: The Road to Wisdom (Proverbs 1:1–7)
Date: May 31, 2025
Host: David Platt
In this meditative episode, David Platt guides listeners through a prayer inspired directly by Proverbs 1:1–7. The central theme is a petition for wisdom, understanding, and a heart that fears the Lord—a foundational key to true knowledge. Rather than offer extended commentary, Platt simply reads the verses and turns their content into personal and intercessory prayer, emphasizing the importance and sufficiency of praying God’s Word for ourselves and others.
Platt moves line by line through the passage, praying for:
Wisdom & Instruction: That God would grant deep wisdom and guidance to listeners and their communities.
“We pray that you would help us to know wisdom and instruction. We pray for that in our lives today...” (02:14)
Insight & Understanding: For comprehension of God's ways and discernment in daily dealings.
Instruction in Righteousness, Justice, & Equity: For God’s direction in living rightly, treating others justly, and pursuing fairness.
“We pray for instruction from you in equity God.” (02:44)
Prudence & Humility: Asking for a childlike spirit receptive to God’s leading.
Guidance for the Young: Special intercession for youth, students, and children to gain “knowledge and discretion to guard them from folly.” (03:09)
Desire for Ongoing Learning: Pleading for open hearts to “increase in learning” about God and life.
