Joshua chapter 5 verses 13 through 15 the commander of the Lord's army, when Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, are you for us or for our adversaries? And he said, no, but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, what does my lord say to his servant? And the commander of the lord's army said to Joshua, take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy. And Joshua did so. Joshua Chapter six the Fall of Jericho Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out and none came in. And the LORD said to Joshua, see, I have given Jericho into your hand with its king and mighty men of valor. You shall march around the city. All the men of war going around the city once, thus shall you do. For six days. Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams horns before the Ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times. And the priests shall blow the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout. And the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up, every one straight before him. So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, take up the Ark of the Covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams horns before the Ark of the Lord. And he said to the people, go forward march around the city and let the armed men pass on before the Ark of the Lord. And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams horns before the Lord went forth forward blowing the trumpets with the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord following them. The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets. And the rear guard was walking after the ark while the trumpets blew continually. But Joshua commanded the people, you shall not shout or make your voice heard. Neither shall any word go out of your mouth until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout. So he caused the Ark of the Lord to circle the city going about at once. And they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp. Then Joshua rose early in the morning and the priests took up the Ark of the Lord. And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams horns before the ark of the Lord walked on, and they blew the trumpets continually. And the armed men were walking before them. And the rear guard was walking after the Ark of the Lord while the trumpets blew continually. And the second day they marched around the city once and returned into the camp. So they did for six days. On the seventh day, they rose early at the dawn of day. And marched around the city in the same manner seven times. It was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times. At the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, shout. For the Lord has given you the city. And the city and all that is within it shall be devoted to the Lord for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live. Because she hid the messengers whom he sent. But you keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, Lest when you have devoted them, you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction and bring trouble upon it. But all silver and gold and every vessel of bricks, bronze and iron are holy to the Lord. They shall go into the treasury of the Lord. So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. And as soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout. And the wall fell down flat. So that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city. Then they devoted all in the city to destruction. Both men and women, young and old, are oxen, sheep and donkeys with the edge of the sword. But to the two men who had spied out the land, Joshua said, go into the prostitute's house and bring out from there the women and all who belonged to her, as you swore to her. So the young men who had been spies went in and brought Rahab and her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. And they brought all her relatives and put them outside the camp of Israel. And they burned the city with fire and everything in it. Only the silver and gold and the vessels of bronze and of iron they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. But Rahab the prostitute in her father's household. And all who belonged to her Joshua saved alive. And she has lived in Israel to this day because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho. Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, curse before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds the city. Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation. And at the cost of his youngest Son shall he set up its gates. So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame was in all the land. Joshua, Chapter seven. Israel defeated at AI. But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things. For Achan, the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel. Joshua sent men from Jericho to AI, which is near Beth Aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out AI. And they returned to Joshua and said to him, do not have all the people go up, but let two or three thousand men go up and attack AI. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for there are few. So about 3,000 men went up there from the people, and they fled before the men of AI. And the men of AI killed about 36 of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Sherebim, and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water. Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord, until the evening he and the elders of Israel, and they put dust on their heads. And Joshua said, alas, O Lord God, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all? To give us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us. Would that have been content to dwell beyond the Jordan, O Lord, what can I say when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies? For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name? The sin of Achan. The Lord said to Joshua, get up. Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned. They have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them. They have taken some of the devoted things they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. Get up. Consecrate the people and say, consecrate yourselves for tomorrow. For thus says the Lord God of Israel, there are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you. In the morning, therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes and the tribe that the Lord takes by Lot shall come near by clans, and the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households, and the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man. And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire. He and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done an outrageous thing in Israel. So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near tribe by tribe. And the tribe of Judah was taken, and he brought near the clans of Judah. And the clan of the Zerahites was taken, and he brought near the clan of the Zerahites man by man. And Zabdi was taken, and he brought near his household man by and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, and the son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah was taken. Then Joshua said to Achan, my son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel and give praise to him, and tell me now what you have done, do not hide it from me. And Achan answered, Joshua, truly I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel. And this is what I did when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar and 200 shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels. Then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent with the silver underneath. So Joshua sent messengers and they ran to the tent, and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath. And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the people of Israel. And they laid them down before the Lord and Joshua, and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters, and his oxen and donkeys and sheep, and his tent, and all that he had. And they brought them up to the valley of Echor. And Joshua said, why did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today. And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned him with fire and stoned them with stones. And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore to this day the name of that place is called the valley of achor. Luke chapter 22, verses 3962 Jesus prays on the mount of Olives. And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the mountain of olives. And the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place he said to them, pray that you may not enter into temptation. And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw and knelt down and prayed, saying, father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven strengthening him. And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow. And he said to them, why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation. Betrayal and arrest of Jesus. While he was still speaking, there came a crowd. And the man called Judas, one of the 12, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said to him, judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss? And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, lord, shall we strike with the sword? And one of them struck the servants of the high priest and cut off his ear. But Jesus said, no more of this, and he touched his ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come out against him, have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me, but this is your hour and the power of darkness. Peter denies Jesus. Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. And Peter was followed at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, this man also was with him. But he denied it, saying, women, I do not know him. And a little later someone else saw him and said, you are also one of them. But Peter said, man, I am not. And after an interval of about an hour, still another insisted, saying, certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean. But Peter said, man, I do not know what you are talking about. And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed, and the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, before the rooster crows, today you will deny me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly. Psalm 69, 1328. But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord, at an acceptable time. O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me in your saving faithfulness, deliver me from sinking in the mire. Let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. Let not the flood sweep over me or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good according to your abundant mercy. Turn to me. Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Make haste to answer me. Draw near to my soul. Redeem me. Ransom me. Because of my enemies you know my reproach and my shame and my dishonor. My foes are all known to you. Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none. And for comforters I found none. They gave me poison for food and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. Let their own table before them become a snare and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see and make their loins tremble continually. Pour out your indignation upon them and let your burning anger overtake them. May their camp be a desolation. Let no one dwell in their tents, for they persecute him whom you have struck down and they recount the pain of those you have wounded. Add to them punishment upon punishment. May they have no acquittal from you. Let them be blotted out of the book of the Living. Let them not be enrolled among the righteous.

(Joshua 5:13-15) | [00:03]
Joshua meets a mysterious man with a drawn sword near Jericho, who reveals himself as "the commander of the army of the Lord."
Joshua's posture of worship ("fell on his face to the earth") is a key moment of humility and recognition of holy presence.
The command: “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” – emphasizing reverence and divine encounter.
*Memorable Quote:
“Are you for us or for our adversaries?... No, but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.”* (Joshua/Commander, [00:10])*
(Joshua 6) | [00:25]
God gives Joshua detailed, unconventional battle instructions—marching around Jericho, priests with trumpets, silence, and then a mighty shout.
The miraculous collapse of Jericho’s walls is a result of obedience to God’s specific direction, showing that victory comes by faith, not conventional means.
Only Rahab and her family are spared, fulfilling the promise for her concealing the Israelite spies.
Everything else is “devoted to destruction”; the city is burned but certain valuables are put in the treasury of the Lord.
Joshua invokes a curse against anyone who tries to rebuild Jericho, warning it will cost their sons.
*Notable Moment:
“Shout! For the Lord has given you the city.”* (Joshua, [01:40])*
*Memorable Quote:
“Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation…”* (Joshua, [04:20])*
(Joshua 7) | [05:10]
Achan from the tribe of Judah secretly takes “devoted things” from Jericho, violating God’s command.
Israel is defeated in their attempt to conquer Ai; the hearts of the people “melted and became as water.”
Joshua and the elders react with grief and confusion, only to learn from God that Israel has sinned.
God instructs Israel to consecrate themselves, identify the guilty party, and that He will not be with them unless the sin is addressed.
Achan confesses, the forbidden items are found in his tent, and he and all he has are destroyed in the Valley of Achor.
The anger of the Lord is turned away after this act of judgment.
