One sleepless night can spark a creative journey. A year ago, in July 2023, insomnia led me to create "Whispering Pines with Dante Emberwood," a dreamy podcast designed to lull myself to sleep. Little did I know, this experiment would position me as a pioneer in AI audio dramaturgy, as noted in a Medium article ( / im-not-the-first-ai-audio-dramatist-this-g... ) that followed.
Fast forward to last night. Once again, sleep eluded me, but this time, I was armed with a year's worth of AI advancements. I decided to push the boundaries further and create a pilot for a new show: "Radio Insomnia."
The Concept
Radio Insomnia is a late-night show for those who never sleep, broadcasting from a timeless desert town where the weather never changes. It's a place that looks like a deserted ghost town to interstate travelers, yet is alive with the whispers of the sleepless.
The AI-Powered Creation Process
What sets this project apart is its end-to-end AI generation. Every element of the show was created using AI tools:
1. Script: Generated by Claude, an AI language model
2. Music: Composed by Udio, an AI music generator
3. Sound Effects and Voices: Created using ElevenLabs' AI voice synthesis
4. Production: Assembled by a Python script, also written by Claude
The entire show sprung from a single prompt:
"Let's imagine radio insomnia, a late night radio show made for those who never sleep. It is slow and dreamy like if time itself stood still. Its broadcasted from a very small desert town where the weather never changes and although people live there it will always look like a deserted ghost town for those few who travels on the nearby interstate road."
The Evolution of AI Creativity
Comparing "Whispering Pines" to "Radio Insomnia" showcases the rapid evolution of AI-generated content. In just one year, we've moved from basic text generation to creating entire audio experiences, complete with custom music and voices.
This project isn't just about creating content; it's about exploring the potential of AI as a creative collaborator. It raises questions about the future of storytelling, the role of AI in creative industries, and the nature of creativity itself.
What's Next?
As AI continues to evolve, so too will the possibilities for creative expression. "Radio Insomnia" is more than just a show—it's a glimpse into a future where the lines between human and AI creativity blur, opening up new realms of imagination and storytelling.
Stay tuned, and who knows? The next time you're up late, scrolling through your podcast app, you might just stumble upon a show that speaks to your sleepless soul—one crafted in the liminal space between human inspiration and artificial intelligence.
And if you're curious about where this journey began, you can still tune into the original "Whispering Pines with Dante Emberwo...

Twenty-three miles east on the interstate lies a phantom turnoff that appears only when travelers need it most. Follow the unmarked dirt road through creosote and sage to find the Oasis Cafe - a weathered desert refuge with a fresh handwritten sign reading "I'll be right back." Outside, an ancient soda machine hums with impossible brands from decades past, dispensing childhood memories in glass bottles. The absent proprietor never returns, but weary souls find exactly what they're looking for in the patient silence: a place to sit with a cold drink and wait for what comes next. Truckers, honeymooners, and researchers share stories of discovering this oasis that can't be found by looking, only by needing. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In the eternal midnight of our desert town, a mysterious bus arrives at precisely 4:04 AM each night. The Pineshadow Transit Company, appearing on no official schedule and bearing passengers no one knows, opens its doors to an empty platform before continuing its endless journey. Tonight, we explore the weathered bus stop that's existed since before our town had a name, the familiar faces glimpsed through fogged windows, and the boundaries that remain uncrossable even in a place where time itself has stopped. Join us as we contemplate the comfort found in watching others pass through our timeless existence. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In tonight's episode of Radio Insomnia, host Alex explores the curious corner store that seems to exist in a state between open and closed. With its unchanging clerk who never seems to arrive or leave, shelves that are perpetually stocked with fresh items, and dimensions that shift to accommodate each customer's needs, the convenience store stands as a beacon of consistency in our timeless desert town. Featuring calls from Maria, Tom, a mysteriously returned Mrs. Pearson with her jar of desert sand, and Old Jim reflecting on the passage of time, this episode examines the comfort found in those fluorescent-lit aisles where the coffee is always hot and the clerk is always watching. In the eternal midnight of our desert town, a mysterious figure combs the dunes for artifacts from long-forgotten civilizations. Tonight on Radio Insomnia, Alex explores the stories behind these ancient treasures and the enigmatic collector who unearths them. Townsfolk call in with tales of strange objects that seem to whisper secrets of lost knowledge, and Mrs. Pearson makes unexpected contact from... somewhere else. Join us as we discover what lies beneath the shifting sands of time, where artifacts aren't just relics of the past, but perhaps keys to understanding why our little town exists outside of time itself. In a town where time stands still, Mrs. Pearson was our constant observer, documenting every shadow, every whisper, every impossibility in her leather-bound notebook. But three nights ago, she followed voices in the desert wind, leaving only footprints that end mid-stride and a half-written letter. Tonight, Sheriff Carson joins us in the studio to piece together her last known movements, while her lamp still burns in an empty window and her curtains move in a windless night. In a place where disappearances are just another way of staying, perhaps Mrs. Pearson has simply found a different angle from which to watch our eternal midnight. Hosted on Acast. A mysterious hum manifests throughout the timeless desert town - not quite audible unless you're not listening for it directly. From Maria's diner where coffee cups resonate at different frequencies, to the library where card catalogs quietly rattle with self-updating knowledge, to the pharmacy's subtly flickering lights, the townspeople begin noticing this gentle vibration that seems to exist in the spaces between sounds. As the eternal midnight deepens, the hum reveals itself not as a disturbance, but as the town's own lullaby - a sonic manifestation of time moving so slowly it becomes audible. Hosted on Acast. On this night of eternal midnight, a mysterious blues parade winds its way through our desert town's streets, moving so slowly you might wonder if it's moving at all. Musicians fade in and out of sight, their notes hanging in the air for hours, and no one can quite tell who's playing and who's watching. Are those familiar faces in the parade, or just tricks of the starlight? Even Mrs. Pearson's meticulous notes can't seem to keep track of this procession that exists somewhere between memory and dream. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode of Radio Insomnia, mysterious phone calls come in from travelers on the eternal interstate - each one caught in their own temporal loop of driving. From a woman trying to reach a love that keeps shifting like a mirage on the horizon, to a trucker who picked up a hitchhiker humming songs that hadn't been written yet, to an engineer following an impossible radio signal. Their stories weave together into a tapestry of endless roads, where distance is measured in memories rather than miles, and every journey leads both everywhere and nowhere at once. Hosted on Acast. In a town where time stands still, the sleepless share their solitary stories. Led by Mrs. Pearson, who anxiously documents every change from behind her lace curtains, tonight's callers reveal the gentle mysteries of their eternal vigil. From Maria at the ever-pouring diner to Wyatt with his desert lights, each voice adds another thread to the tapestry of this endless midnight. Hosted on Acast. Just off Main Street in our timeless desert town lies an unremarkable door that leads to an eternal jazz club hidden beneath the streets. In The Blue Note Below, a mysterious waitress forever reads her endless book while phantom bands play their last song of the night that never ends. Empty tables hold evidence of patrons who were just here - or perhaps have yet to arrive - while impossible music drifts through the cool underground air. Hosted on Acast.
