Welcome to Raising good humans. I'm Dr. Eliza Pressman and happy, happy holidays. I hope everybody had an incredible time. I hope you're getting some breaks. And today's episode is just like a joyful break. I interviewed John Legend. John Legend, the brilliant American singer, songwriter, producer, father of four, actor. He has a new album out of Lullabies. So it was just fun to kind of hear about this incredible person who's also raising four kids like the rest of us. And one thing that we cover that I just didn't know and thought was so fascinating is John Legend's experience growing up in Ohio being kind of so sophisticated and intellectually advanced that he had to skip two grades, be homeschooled, kind of went to college at 16, and all that comes with it. We also talk about just being the father of four kids between ages 18 months and 8 years old. His son Miles was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. And so managing those kinds of diagnoses in the context of a whole family system. So we're covering a lot of topics, but most importantly, I just wanted to share with you some feel good times, and I hope you enjoy some good music and have a beautiful, connected weekend. I first just want to hear a little bit about you as a dad, and I know that you can weave in your beautiful new album because it sounds like being a dad inspired that, but can we hear a little bit?
John Legend (1:57)
Well, I love being a dad. We have four kids now. Our oldest is Luna, she's eight. And our second is a boy named Miles. He's six, and Esti is nearly two. She's a toddler running around the house. And then she has a younger brother that's practically like a twin because we had him with the surrogate only five months later than when Chrissy had Esty. And his name is Ren, So he'll be 18 months in December. And so we've got a full house. Yeah, running around, talking, energy, all the things. And, you know, they're at different phases of early childhood, so we're experiencing all of it right now except all the, you know, tween and teen angst that we know is waiting for us later.

Yeah, you have a little time, but, you know.

Well, and how am I as a father? I'm very involved. I like playing with them, talking to them about school and homework and quizzing them on math. And Miles and I like to play sports in the backyard. So we'll probably spend at least whenever I'm home, probably like a half an hour, an hour or so out in the backyard throwing baseballs and footballs and shooting basketballs. I'm not very athletic, but I'm game enough to like participate with him and have fun with him. Luna and I like to draw together. We bond over music as well. And all of my kids and I bond over music. Now I grew up in a very musical family, so music always felt very connected to family as far as I was concerned. Growing up, my mother sang and directed the choir at my church. My father sang in the choir and played the drums at my church. My grandmother, my mom's mom was the church organist. So I, I was always around music growing up and, and so music was a big part of my parents parenting style and I think it's a big part of mine as well. And even Chrissy, even though she's never been professionally in music, she loves music too. She's always singing ditties around the house and we always engage with the kids through music. And so obviously that led to me thinking of doing this children's album, My Favorite Dream. And the album kind of got going when Christy said, you should learn this song from the Fisher Price Playmat, a song called maybe, AKA the Purple Monkey song. And Esti was really vibing to this song and loved it. And Chrissy said, you should learn this for Esti. And so I went and learned it on the piano and sang it to her and then we posted it on our Instagram and everyone was like, john, we need more lullabies from you. We need more kids songs from you. And so I decided to just write children's album, wrote all the songs here at home, surrounded by my family. And this is the first album I wrote completely by myself, first album I wrote at home. So it was very directly inspired by parenting and being around my family. And then we released the album in August and my kids still listen to it all the time and hopefully it's a part of a lot of other people's lives now too. It's been, it's been fun kind of entering this world of children's music and thinking about all the messages that we like to share with our kids and how to translate that into song. And I'm really happy with how the album's been received by everyone.
