Mallory O'Meara
You're listening to Reading Glasses, a show about book culture and literary life designed to help you read better. I'm author and book devourer Mallory O'Meara.
Bria Grant
And I'm Bria Grant, filmmaker and e reader. This episode, we're ticking off another box on the 2025 reading glasses. Glasses classes challenge pick a book based on the title. Plus, we solve a problem about reading graphic novels in public. Not graphic novels, but graphic.
Mallory O'Meara
Graphic. Graphic novels.
Bria Grant
Graphic. Graphic novel. And we are recommending some hope punk books.
Mallory O'Meara
But first, Bria, what are you reading?
Bria Grant
I am listening to, you know, in our anticipated books episode, I said I'm gonna read this book. And now I'm reading it, which is, you know, I promise I delivered. And listening to everything is Tuberculosis, the history and persistence of our Deadliest Infection by John Green.
Mallory O'Meara
I'm still waiting for it from the library.
Bria Grant
I got it from. I'm listening to it. I got it from Libro fm.
Mallory O'Meara
Oh, our influencer arcs.
Bria Grant
No, I just. No, it wasn't on there. I think I purchased it. I bought it because I was excited about the title, which I didn't know understand until I started reading. The book is basically John Green, who is an. He's a fiction writer, is a nonfiction writer, kind of does both. He constantly is bringing up tuberculosis. And his wife was like, you think everything is tuberculosis? And so he named his book Everything is Tuberculosis.
Mallory O'Meara
I love that.
Bria Grant
But it actually is like. He's like. It's everything from the reason we have cowboy hats to what? All these. All these, like, little micro history stories which are really fascinating. But the thing about tuberculosis is that it kills more people every year than any other infectious disease. Minus 2020, when we had Covid, the first year of COVID And even after the first year of COVID it went back to being the number one killer in the world. And he. He does a lot of activism and work with various countries where it is a huge problem. Particularly he works in Sierra Leone, but he goes through and sort of does a history of tuberculosis, how it's affected everything from. I mean, literally, it's. Everything is tuberculosis, from beauty standards to art to influencing racism and classism. All. All of these fascinating ways in which tuberculosis has really shaped the way we see the world. And it also follows this one kid who he has made friends with in Sierra Leone and sort of telling the story through this child. He's like 17, but looks like he's like 8 or 9.
Mallory O'Meara
Because of tuberculosis.
Bria Grant
Because of tuberculosis. Cause he got it when he was young and he didn't grow in. In the way that. That he would have if he hadn't got tuberculosis. It is fascinating and at a time when we're cutting a lot of budgets for overseas help for this kind of thing, and we really don't want to have a major amount of tuberculosis here. I think this is a very important book.
Mallory O'Meara
Is this your science book for the reading glasses? No.
Bria Grant
I guess it might be. I have a couple other books on my list, but this one, yeah, I think this will be our. My science book. That's a good call. I do like a disease book. It maybe should be on my.
Mallory O'Meara
Bria loves disease, Famously loves disease, loves disease.
Bria Grant
I like a disease book and this one is a great one. What are you reading?
Mallory O'Meara
We are in the middle of the trans rights readathon right now and I pulled some. Some fun books by trans authors with trans protagonists and this one just came out. So I am reading woodworking by Emily St. James, I believe.
Bria Grant
Oh, I want to read this.
Mallory O'Meara
It's way good. It's her debut novel and it's like it's about this woman. She is 35 years old. She just got divorced. She's like. She's trans, but she hasn't come out yet. She's working as a high school teacher in the small town in South Dakota. And all of a sudden teen this new. I think I can't remember if the teen like transfers in or like they find they like this girl comes into her class but she's like out as a trans teenage girl and she's like really punky and really like in your face. And she's just like. She's just like, like that cool. No one doesn't give a kind of a high school girl. And so the teacher is like kind of shyly like trying to be friends with her and like, so she can ask her like, what do I do? And the. It's really funny because the. The teenager girl. The girl is like, fine, I don't want to be your trans guide, but I'll help you. And it's like there' op one of the opening scenes with them is like her. The. The teenager goes in to buy nail polish for her. She. The teacher doesn't want to be seen buying nail polish at the. Because it's a small town, right? Want to be seen by nail polish at the pharmacy. So the two of them like form this friendship like trying to learn about like teach each other and learn about life and like. And all like. But they, they don't want to come under too much scrutiny in the community. It's just like, it's so. It's very funny and very heartwarming and just like feels very real for right now. And I' so happy that it came out in time for the trans rights readathon.
Bria Grant
I love that.
Mallory O'Meara
So I'm reading woodworking by Emily St.
Bria Grant
James and I'm listening to Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green, and it's read by John Green.
Mallory O'Meara
So I want to take a moment to share some listener feedback. Abby wrote in to say hi Bri and Mallory. I am a huge fan of your podcast and have been listening for years now. I recently listened to Mallory talk about her dating app experiences and wanted to share a dating story of my own.
Bria Grant
Okay.
Mallory O'Meara
Oh my God, I love this email. Also, I just want to. I appreciate the glasses being very invested in my. In my love life.
Bria Grant
It's lovely.
Mallory O'Meara
I love all of you so much. I attended a speed dating event at a local fantasy themed bookstore. I thought since it was being held at a bookstore that the men attending would be more my type. I was wrong. Over half the men attending had never even been to the bookstore before.
Bria Grant
What a great way to get them into the bookstore.
Mallory O'Meara
Or, I mean, sure. But I would be. If I was Abby. I would be very grumpy about this. Abby says, when I describe my favorite type of book as a mystery with a romantic subplot, giving examples such as Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies in the Veronica Speedwell series, I was met with blank expressions. Not one of the men had ever read either of these books or understood what I meant by my description. Needless to say, I left without matching with anyone. I can laugh at this experience now, but at the time, it was disheartening to realize that not a single one of these men shared my love of reading. Oh well, maybe I would be. I would be the same way.
Bria Grant
Maybe one of those men went home and got those books.
Mallory O'Meara
I hope so. But still, I get it. This would make me so grumpy. And even though I have now I have hwb, I'm not currently on the market, on the bookish market. I really get this. And this would make me so. Oh, I'd be so.
Bria Grant
Yeah, that's pretty infuriating.
Mallory O'Meara
Especially at a bookstore. Like, also, I don't know, you haven't heard of horny fairy books. Everybody's talking about horny fairy books. Come on, Abby. I sympathize with you. I really get it.
Bria Grant
Sage wrote in and said, hi, Brian. Mallory. I was listening to episode 392 where y'all talked about how you wish there were a rating system for Spice in books. While I don't know of anything official from Publishers, Shares is a website that provides exactly this Romance IO did you know about this?
Mallory O'Meara
We have talked about this on the show a really long years and years ago. Someone was looking for a way to tell whether a book was closed or open door and we did talk about this, but I wanted to put that because a bunch of people wrote in about this and I wanted to kind of have a refresher, especially since we're talking about romance a lot more than we did a few years ago.
Bria Grant
As an ace person who does not enjoy spicy scenes in romance novels, but loves a cute, cozy romance, this website is a game changer for me. You can look up any romance and some non romance books and it'll give you a Spice rating out of five from no sexual content even off the page. That's a one. Up to multiple explicit scenes, possibly with kinky content, that's a five. It also lists romance tropes like Grumpy Sunshine, Love Triangle and more. Plus there are some content warnings included at the bottom. Anytime I see a romance that I'm interested in, I look it up first on this site and it's helped me so much with the warning content that would take me out of a book. Hopefully this can help someone else with their romance adventures. That's great. Romance IO I love this website.
Mallory O'Meara
This helped me a lot when we were doing yeah we should maybe do it like a book text whole segment on it because I I use this a lot when we did the the Max Fund Drive personalized recommendations because a lot of people were looking for Closed Door and I'm a little pervert and almost every romance novel that I own is Open Door. So I I was checking all of my recs on Romance IO to make sure that it was closed door. Very, very helpful. Ashley wrote in to say hello Mallory and Bria. I wanted to write in about my experience reading Les miserables for the 2025 reading glasses years. I've been saying this is the year I'm finally going to read Les Mis. Okay. But then I never do. Thanks to the Reading Glasses Challenge, though, I'm actually doing it. When the 2025 Reading Glasses Challenge was announced, I was skeptical that I would enjoy or get anything out of the prompt to read a book slowly as I am typically a book devourer and I was worried that I would either get bored or forget the plot. Plus I am just not a very patient person lol however, this has been the exact prompt I needed to make it through Les Mis. The book has 365 chapters, most of which are only a few pages, so I committed to reading one chapter a day and making the book last for the who year. So far I am loving the experience. To make a good thing even better, I joined a read along on Storygraph so I can discuss the book as I go with other users doing the one chapter a day plan shout out to kind souls that organized the read along because they even made a reading schedule. Wow. And a daily chapter Google Calendar to keep us all organized. Having an online community to dissect the book with as I go has been extra fun and has really helped me engage with the text. To my great surprise and unhappiness, I have had no trouble remembering the plot or getting bored. I feel like I'm just really soaking it in and reading my daily chapter is always a nice pick me up. As a nice bonus, I am checking off three Reading Glasses Challenge items with one book. Read a honker, read the oldest book on my tbr and of course read a book slowly. Obviously I should never have doubted that the RG Challenge would improve my reading life. Thank you both for all you do. So many people are getting the most out of reading because of you. That is so lovely.
Bria Grant
Okay, we have to repost this reading schedule because it is whoever made this.
Mallory O'Meara
Is just so cool.
Bria Grant
First of all, great at spreadsheets. Second of all, look, there are people.
Mallory O'Meara
Out there in the reading world that are. That are angels among us.
Bria Grant
Yeah, it's really impressive what they did. It's all five volumes starting January 1st ending December 31st.
Mallory O'Meara
God.
Bria Grant
And it's, it's exactly what you should be reading to finish this book.
Mallory O'Meara
So cool.
Bria Grant
Amazing.
Mallory O'Meara

Mallory O'Meara
This week, we're ticking off another box on the 2025 reading glasses. Glasses. Glasses, Glasses. Challenge. Pick a book based on the title. Why did we put this on the challenge? How are we completing it? And most importantly, how can it improve your reading life? First off, very important for the classers, the rules, folks. You do not have to finish the book. All you have to do is try. You just pick a.
Bria Grant
Pick it.
Mallory O'Meara
It's pick a book based on the title. It's not finish a book based on the title. So just pick a book. You can read a page, hate it, and you're done. Nothing else. All right, Bria, why did we put this on the challenge?
Bria Grant
Well, it's fun.
Mallory O'Meara
It is fun. We love a silly thing.
Bria Grant
It is. And last year we did pick a book based on the COVID that we had a lot of fun with. Plus, I love a good title.
Mallory O'Meara
I know you do. You actually, I thought about you with this. You really love a fun.
Bria Grant
I love a fun time. A fun title can get me reading a book really quickly. So this is fun for me to just to pick a book, but I think it's just a fun. It's a fun challenge and it maybe will get you out of going and doing all that research and like, should I read this book? What. What is the. What are all the ratings? What do the reviews say? Instead of doing all that, you just pick it and see if you like it.
Mallory O'Meara
Yeah. Love it. So how do we think this can improve your reading life? It is a fun way to branch out a little and try something new. Maybe even surprise yourself with a book you normally wouldn't pick up. But the title is intriguing to you, and so. And the cool thing about doing this is that right away you're intrigued about something in the conte of the book. I think that's what's fun about this particular thing. You immediately want to know something about the plot or the characters of the setting. There's something that it. Because you're you. Even if it's like, a silly title, you're like, well, why is it called that? I need to know.
Bria Grant
Yeah.
Mallory O'Meara
Have you ever done this before? We did put this on the challenge.
Bria Grant
Like we said, I'm a sucker for a good title. So I. I do pick up books based on the title. I probably wouldn't read it without actually reading what it's about. So this is a fun experiment for me as a person who likes spoilers. It's hard for me to jump in and read because I do want to know what it's about. But there's something fun to me about. About just going like, okay, good title. I'm gonna start it. And, like, I'm. So that's what I'm planning on doing. I haven't done this yet.
Mallory O'Meara
I'm.
Bria Grant
This one I'm planning on doing is. I don't know anything about the book. I just know the title, and I'm gonna start reading it. What about you? Have you ever done this?
Mallory O'Meara
Absolutely. I think it's because I'm a plot reader. Oh.
Bria Grant
Yeah.
Mallory O'Meara
And I love a title that immediately makes me go, oh, and are you.
Bria Grant
Reading what the plots about, or you're not reading what the plot's about?
Mallory O'Meara
No, I wouldn't. I went in cold on this one. So I. Before I talk about the book I picked for this, I. I did look at my bookshelves, and there's a bunch of books that I did this. This with, and I knew nothing about them. So that time I got drunk and saved a demon.
Bria Grant
Great.
Mallory O'Meara
I bought before it even came out from orbit at the rip bodice, because I was like, what? What? I have to know.
Bria Grant
Funny. Good title.
Mallory O'Meara
The Library of the Dead.
Bria Grant
Great.
Mallory O'Meara
My Sister the Serial Killer.
Bria Grant
Great title.
Mallory O'Meara
Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires. I'm gonna say I don't know if.
Bria Grant
That counts, because you already liked Grady.
Mallory O'Meara
I know. Well, but I didn't know what the book was about. But the title says it all.
Bria Grant
Yeah, but you're not picking it based on the title. You're picking it based on the fact that it's Grady and the title.
Mallory O'Meara
I guess that's.
Bria Grant
That's.
Mallory O'Meara
I would. But.
Bria Grant
But I would encourage people to, like, think outside of, like. Because if somebody already know. I just think you should think about, like, try to find something you literally know nothing about to really push yourself.
Mallory O'Meara
Okay.
Bria Grant
That's. That's my thought.
Mallory O'Meara
I. Well, I did pick an author that I know, but it's I didn't know anything about the plot. Well, Mallory, maybe I'll do multiple. Well, I also was gonna say this body isn't big enough for the both.
Bria Grant
Great title.
Mallory O'Meara
What a great title.
Bria Grant
Good title.
Mallory O'Meara
All right, so you have not completed this yet. Do you have some stuff in the running?
Bria Grant
I'm gonna throw some titles at you. If you read them, they are disqualified. But I want you to tell me which one you think sounds the most interesting, and I'm gonna read it based on the title. I'm not gonna know anything about it. Okay, you don't know anything about it. I. Only ones you don't know anything about. You might know all these, but. Okay, here's books that are on my tbr. I can't remember why I put them on there, so I feel like they count. You ready?
Mallory O'Meara
Okay.
Bria Grant
Serial killer, Support group.
Mallory O'Meara
Pretty good.
Bria Grant
Death Takes Me. I think it's a good title. We Live on the Horizon.
Mallory O'Meara
I like that.
Bria Grant
Good one. Everything Must Go. Stories we Tell about the End of the world.
Mallory O'Meara
Okay.
Bria Grant
And the spirit collection of Thornhall.
Mallory O'Meara
Ooh, that's my favorite one. Because I want to know what a spirit collection is.
Bria Grant
Do you know anything about that book?
Mallory O'Meara
Nope. But I want to know what a spirit collection is.
Bria Grant
Okay, I'm going to read it. I'm bolding it right now. And I will get it from the library. That will be the book I'm going to read for this particular one, the spirit collection.
Mallory O'Meara
I'm literally looking at my Libby holds right now to see if any of these books I just put on because of the.
Bria Grant
Because of the title.
Mallory O'Meara
Because of the title.
Bria Grant
Okay, I'm placing a hold on spirit collection right now. It is by. I don't even know who it was by. It's by J. Ann Thomas. And I'm not going to read what it's about. I'm just going to try to read it. What are you going to do? So you're going to go try. You're going to do the same thing?
Mallory O'Meara
Yeah, I'm going through my Libby holds right now.
Bria Grant
Read some titles and not.
Mallory O'Meara
The problem is.
Bria Grant
The problem is I looked at the covers and I was trying not to look at the covers.
Mallory O'Meara
These are all authors that I. That I know.
Bria Grant
But in the Libby collection, there's no authors you don't know in the Libby collection.
Mallory O'Meara
No, but I. The problem is I know so much about books.
Bria Grant
You didn't know the spirit hall one.
Mallory O'Meara
I know.
Bria Grant
Do you read that one?
Mallory O'Meara
Maybe I will. Well, so I was going to do. So my friend, Chuck Wendig mailed me an arc of his new book, and all I knew was the new Chuck Wendig. But I opened it up, and I saw that it was called Staircase in the Woods. And I was like, this is perfect, because I don't know anything about it.
Bria Grant
Sure.
Mallory O'Meara
All that I know is that there's a staircase in the woods. And now look, if you want to.
Bria Grant
Count it, I think it's fine. I just think that you could push yourself because you know you're gonna like it because it's Chuck Windy.
Mallory O'Meara
I know, but I was like, why is that staircase in the woods? Where did it come from? Where does it go? Where does it lead? And I was not disappointed. It was great. I think it's my. In my best of the year so far, but. But okay.
Bria Grant
I do want to read that one.
Mallory O'Meara
I will push myself to an author. I mean, that's a new. A different level of the challenge, though, is a book you. It has to be an author that you've never read before.
Bria Grant
I think. Well, I think if it's someone, like, maybe you've read. But I. I don't know. You're right. That is a little bit different. So maybe I'm pushing this a little too far.
Mallory O'Meara
But maybe we're doing hard mode.
Bria Grant
We are doing hard mode. But, yeah, I think that's right. There's easy mode where it's like, oh, it's an author that you like that also has a title. That's interesting. But I think there's something interesting about picking out a book that you don't know anything about. You just read the title. For me, it's easy because I have such a horrible memory that I've added all these to my TBR and I don't want to remember.
Mallory O'Meara
That's my problem is, like, my one superpower on this on God's green Earth, is that I as like, I have an encyclopedic knowledge of books that I've heard of. Like, I remember every book that I've heard of. I remember the COVID like, I do.
Bria Grant
You want me to send you a list that you may not have heard of?
Mallory O'Meara
Wow.
Bria Grant
I can do it. I'll send you a list.
Mallory O'Meara
But I do the. We're bringing the anticipated books episodes back. It's going to be so hard for me.
Bria Grant
I'm gonna send you ones that maybe you haven't heard of, though.
Mallory O'Meara
Bria's gonna send me a book wrapped up in black.
Bria Grant
These books are all out that I just named.
Mallory O'Meara
Oh, yeah.
Bria Grant
Like, this Death takes me. That seems Like a Mallory book.
Mallory O'Meara
I know, but the spirit collection seems very interesting.
Bria Grant
Maybe we should both read this spirit collection book.
Mallory O'Meara
Oh, but now, okay, you want to look it up.
Bria Grant
That's the problem. You just gotta read it.
Mallory O'Meara
But how am I gonna get it without looking it up?
Bria Grant
You just add it to your. Your library list.
Mallory O'Meara
But then I'm gonna see the COVID.
Bria Grant
This is a tough challenge, I think.
Mallory O'Meara
I think we're being too hard about it, I think, because you. Because if you're going to get it from Libby, you're going to see who the author is. You're going cover. You buy in a bookstore. You're gonna. You can't walk in with your eyes closed and be like, hand me this book, please.
Bria Grant
But I. That's true. But I, I, I definitely went through. I tried to just look at the titles. I tried to, like, ignore.
Mallory O'Meara
You're doing extreme mode on this.
Bria Grant
I am, because I was like, well, I just want to see. Because obviously I do pick a lot of books based on the title, honestly. But yeah, I just think there's ones like the new Grady Henders has a terrific title, but I know I'm gonna like it because I would pick it because it's pretty. He could also name it, like, dumb. Dumb Butts. And I would. I'd be like, I'm gonna read it anyway. Dumb Butts, the Grady Hendrix book. I'm gonna pitch that to him.
Mallory O'Meara
Imagine in, like, a cool font. I know.
Bria Grant
It would be like. Exactly. It would look cool.
Mallory O'Meara
That's the problem. It's got, like, a matte cover, like, with the dumb butts. It's, like, is embossed on the Dumb Butts by Grady Hendrix. Grady, that's for you. That's free. Yeah, you can have that.
Bria Grant
That's a good pitch.
Mallory O'Meara
All right, I'll pick another one. But I think I do. You have to look at the COVID to get it.
Bria Grant
Yeah, but pick it based on the title instead of the COVID Okay. I think you can know, like, this is more of a time I'm gonna.
Mallory O'Meara
Have to pick it now before I start doing in the anticipated books episodes.
Bria Grant
Okay.
Mallory O'Meara
Wow.
Bria Grant
You know what's a real challenge for you?
Mallory O'Meara
I'll. Okay, I think we should. I think for listeners, you should be able to see the COVID even if you know that. Like, even if you know the author. That's fine. I think for you and I, who are maybe in a need to do hard mode, I'm gonna let you pick this out for me, Bria. Okay.
Bria Grant
You can send me to be from this year.
Mallory O'Meara
I know. No, I know.
Bria Grant
So you could go to your TBR from, like, years ago and be like, I don't remember what this book is.
Mallory O'Meara
But the title from the time we did this podcast. I mean, you know, Bria, that's like my superpower.
Bria Grant
I know.
Mallory O'Meara
It is tough. People can tell me the. A scrap of something about a book, and I'll be like, but remember that time we were driving around and you were like, it's a book that takes place in a castle. And I was like, is the Keep by Jennifer Egan? And you were like, yes. So I think. What. I think you should do this for me. You should send me a selection.
Bria Grant
Okay.
Mallory O'Meara
And I will pick from there.
Bria Grant
Okay.
Mallory O'Meara
And we'll see how it goes.
Bria Grant
Okay. I can do that.
Mallory O'Meara
And I think if listeners want to try to have a friend, this would be a fun thing to do with a friend.
Bria Grant
Yeah, that's right.
Mallory O'Meara
But I think the normal, regular way to do this part of the challenge is just, even if you know the author, just pick, because there's some authors that you might want to not. I mean, obviously I love every Chuck Wendig book that comes out because he's incredible. He's one of my favorite horror authors. But sometimes authors come out with books that you don't like, so it's true.
Bria Grant
But if you're going to read it anyway, I just am like, I don't know if that's the ch. That's a challenge.
Mallory O'Meara
Okay.
Bria Grant
That's what I'm saying.
Mallory O'Meara
All right, well, Bria is going to super challenge me, okay. And just send me a shuterie board of book titles.
Bria Grant
I'll send you some good ones and you. And maybe you'll know some of them and then they. Disqualified.
Mallory O'Meara
Okay, no space books. Actually, you know what? It. Maybe it might be space book. Okay, let's go wild. Let's go buck wild on this one.
Bria Grant
Okay?
Mallory O'Meara
All right. What if there's a book called Dumb Butts? Dumb Butts.
Bria Grant
I just typed in Dumb Butts the book.
Mallory O'Meara
There's not.
Bria Grant
I'm. I'm. I'm trademarking that. I'm going to take. I'm going to.
Mallory O'Meara
We're going to write the Dumb Butts book. Well, because there is Butts by Heather Radcliffe. Yeah, radke. But those are regular butts, not dumb.
Bria Grant
But not dumb ones.
Mallory O'Meara
Folks, we are recording this on the last day of the Max Fun Drive, and we are so tired, and so we have lost all sanity. We are completely deranged. And we still have to do more. We have to still have to do multiple live things. After this, we do Dumb Butts. The book by Bria Grant Mallory Omar. That's our secret. That's the next book after the no pressure Book journal. Anyway, send your thoughts toreading glasses podcastmail.com. tell us what you're going to do for this challenge before we saw or you know what. Know what, Glassers? Send me a title with no author attached and I will. I could pick from there.
Bria Grant
Great.
Mallory O'Meara
A book you want me to read? Email it to reading glasses podcast gmail.com. just send me a title.
Bria Grant
No authors though.
Mallory O'Meara
Just raw dog it. No, no author, no book cover, nothing. Just send me a title.
Bria Grant
Okay.
Mallory O'Meara
Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.
Bria Grant
Get. Give, give. You have to give us an update on the next episode.
Mallory O'Meara
Yes, I'll do that.
Bria Grant
I'll send you some too.
Mallory O'Meara

It's kind of like we're your friends. Find us@maximumfun.org or wherever you get your podcasts. Now it's time to solve a bookish problem from one of our listeners, Tim Wrightson. Hi there. I'm listening to episode 394 right now and the part about reading smutty books in public places got me thinking. I recently took a trip and was on a plane. I had brought some graphic novel to read, but hesitated. I had a saga volume and beneath the trees where nobody sees. Is it okay to read these on a plane where several people are in a clear or forced view? I thought to myself, you make a joke in episode 394 about just not telling people what's on the page, but with a graphic novel, it's right there, clearly visible. I ultimately just went ahead and read the graphic novel, but it did make me wonder about what public opinion is on this matter. And like Bria's co worker, I just had to ask the experts. Thanks and happy public's muddy reading. Bria, what do you think Tim should do here?
Bria Grant
I've had this problem also reading smutty or violent graphic novels on a plane. On a plane, specifically because you're sitting right next to a stranger and that's. And they can see.
Mallory O'Meara
I finished Priest when I was on the on the way back from my Michigan event and I was like, oh boy.
Bria Grant
But I feel like books, like people have to really be looking, but graphic novels, people got to be pe. You can do a glance. You can do a glance. But also people need to be less nosy.
Mallory O'Meara
I also agree with that.
Bria Grant
I don't think this is on you, okay? If a child is sitting next to you and you're reading an illustrated Kama Sutra, you know what I mean?
Mallory O'Meara
Like you're reading the latest issue of Hustler magazine. Maybe don't do it next to a small child.
Bria Grant
Use your discretion, because that child may not, like, know not to look over. You know what I mean? Like, they're not going to avert their eyes. But if the child's on, like, their iPad might be okay. You know, just keep it. Keep it away. I don't worry about it too much because I'm like, these nosy people should keep to themselves. And also, maybe they like it. Like, maybe, like, you should enjoy this. This sexy comic.
Mallory O'Meara
Free public service. Free public smut.
Bria Grant
I' in this good story for them. Later, they'll be like, this person next to me. Maybe they was reading, like, these space aliens having tentacle sex. Like that. That's a good story for them.
Mallory O'Meara
You know, maybe you could awaken something in them.
Bria Grant
Yeah. They're like, what? They're like, what are you reading?
Mallory O'Meara
Oh, my.
Bria Grant
That's actually never happened. I think just. I do go kind of quickly through those parts just to, like, be cognizant of the world around me. But. But I think also I don't know what my neighbor on the plane is doing because I don't look over. I'm not interested. Even if they're reading a book. I often like. I just. Let's all, like, keep to ourselves right now.
Mallory O'Meara
Yeah. No. The only way planes are even mildly bearable in which they are most of the time not is by. I am not a plane talker. No, no, no, no, no. I do not talk to people on planes. I am in my own bubble, and I appreciate everyone else to be in theirs.
Bria Grant
Yeah. Like, keep, keep. I want us all to put on our headphones and read our books and fall asleep.
Mallory O'Meara
Oh, if you were a person. Psa. When did we it all be. It become commonplace in public to take phone calls and FaceTimes on speakerphone.
Bria Grant
It's. It's. Oh. On public or in planes?
Mallory O'Meara
Both.
Bria Grant
Yeah. Yeah.
Mallory O'Meara
Once I was sitting on a plane next to a man playing YouTube with no headphones in, and I asked him, do you have headphones? And he looked at me like I had five heads.
Bria Grant
The flight attendant. This happened to my plane recently. A flight attendant came by and told somebody. They're like, you need to put on headphones.
Mallory O'Meara
Oh, God bless those.
Bria Grant
Well, which I think they probably have to do all the time now. But, yeah, you gotta put on headphones. We don't want to hear all distracting.
Mallory O'Meara
There's a man. There's. I have a laundromat enemy, and I work Very hard to find a laundromat day where he is not there because he is always on the phone on speakerphone for like a full hour. And I'm always like, can I push him into the washer machine speaker?
Bria Grant
You. What is he talking about?
Mallory O'Meara
Nothing.
Bria Grant
Oh, yeah.
Mallory O'Meara
Just nothing. And I mean, if you were on the speakerphone in public, you better be talking to the president, which, I mean, that's not a good. That's not even a good analogy. You better be talking to NASA about aliens landing. Okay. You better not be talking to your mother in law about. About your favorite napkin brands.
Bria Grant
Yeah, interesting.
Mallory O'Meara
It happens all the time. I see people either on the phone or they're playing Tick Tock videos and no.
Bria Grant
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Mallory O'Meara
No headphones.
Bria Grant
Yeah. I don't understand. It makes me irate. Although at the same time, I just told someone it was okay to read a smutty comic on a plane. So maybe you're not.
Mallory O'Meara
You're not watching porn on a plane with no headphones. People can't hear the slice of a head being chopped off or a boob flapping around.
Bria Grant
Oh, what does that sound like?
Mallory O'Meara
Have you ever seen Barman Star go to Vista Del Mar? Yeah, it's a real tit flapper. Listen, what is your advice? And we are going off the rails. Yeah.
Bria Grant
What's your advice for. For this.
Mallory O'Meara
I agree with you one, I think it's your comfort level. Like, if you are. If you are feeling personally very uncomfortable, don't do it. But if you're. You're an unashamed pervert like me, myself, go for it again. You're not forcing anybody to read over your shoulder. If somebody is sitting next to you and they're reading, that's their own things. Again, if you're next to a child and you're reading your book on 72 point font and it says fairy on your. On your E reader and you could see it from a mile away, like an eye T test at the eye doctors. Don't make me. Don't do that. I will say I sometimes when I read smut on planes, if I'm reading it on my Kobo, I will make the font smaller.
Bria Grant
Oh, interesting.
Mallory O'Meara
Because I use I. My Kobo is Kobo font is comically large. I have told that story about being on a date and the guy rolled up being like, wow, that's big font.
Bria Grant
Yeah.
Mallory O'Meara
And I was like, I'm gonna fight you huge too. So I will make the font smaller. That. That helps. And like, and you know, like dimming my lights A little bit, but I'm still gonna read that. Like, like, you know, it's not like you have to. You're holding the book above your head. If you have a graphic novel on your lap and people are looking over, that is their problem. Again, it's not okay to bring like a porno onto a plane. And again, if you are next to a small child, that is different. But if you're next to an adult and you're reading a graphic novel and there's a boob or a severed head or maybe both, that's fine. Like, don't listen. Don't look at my shit. Yeah, watch a free movie. Watch the Avengers.
Bria Grant
Put your, watch your tiktoks without the speaker, without your headphones.
Mallory O'Meara
Jesus. Like, like stay in your lane. Yeah, but again, it's your own comfort level. Don't like put yourself. You don't need to like make a statement about smut and like make yourself uncomfortable by reading it in public. If it really makes you embarrassed, read something else. But if you want to read your smut book and there's people around you, do it. You're not forcing anybody to. I almost said nose drop.
Bria Grant
Nose drop.
Mallory O'Meara
Being nosy. It's ear eavesdropping. But with your eyes.
Bria Grant
Nose drop.
Mallory O'Meara
Because you're sticking your nose in someone's business. Your nose dropping.
Bria Grant
Yeah. I think in planes people generally keep to themselves though. I think that except for the one person who's playing tick tock videos and or video games on their phone, like most everyone else is like looking at their own.
Mallory O'Meara
They're all, we're all miserable because flying.
Bria Grant
Is the worst and you kind of keep to yourself. You like. I feel like the person next to me could be like doing all sorts of stuff and I don't know what I'm not paying.
Mallory O'Meara
Yeah. They could be dissecting a frog and I would not be paying attention. The only time I look up is when the snack cart goes by and then I'm like, oh, hey, yeah, sparkly water for me.
Bria Grant
Oh yeah, I do.
Mallory O'Meara
Yes, I would like a seltzer water and pretzels.
Bria Grant
Yeah, there you go.
Mallory O'Meara
The worst pretzels you could ever imagine. But yeah, driest pretzels, so. Well, that's why you need the water. Cuz it me, it's like one of those sucky things that the dentist is like. Yeah, sucks all the moisture out of her mouth. But yeah, leave people alone, for God's sake. Just let them read what they want to read. But don't make yourself uncomfortable is what is what we're saying. So if you want to solve your reader problem, send it to reading glasses podcast gmail.com foreign answer a recommendation request from Rachel. I just want to do a little content warning. We are going to be talking about cancer briefly, so either skip this section or skip forward like a minute or two while I am reading the request. Okay. My beloved spouse of eight years is facing what may turn out to be a battle with cancer. Things are incredibly stressful and frightening right now. I am looking for book recommendations to help me through this time. Specifically, I want to read books with the idea of goodness at their core. Hope Punk. I guess some examples that spring to mind are of course, my beloved Lord of the Rings and more recently the Monk and Robot series by Becky Chambers. I am open to basically anything in the fiction genre except books with a cancer plot. Thank you. Bria. What do you think? Okay.
Bria Grant
I think Mallory and I are going to recommend Mike Chen books.
Mallory O'Meara
Mike Chen, the king of Hope punk.
Bria Grant
Across the board, Mike Chen has a.
Mallory O'Meara
Little crown that just has smiling people on it.
Bria Grant
We are both big fans of Mike Chen. There's a ton of books he has that are in the hope punk genre. I'm going to say start with the beginning at the end. I think this is a really good way into hope punk. It's less like adventure as Lord of the Rings, but it is, it does have like an element of adventure. It is a post pandemic book. Sorry. And basically there's a bunch of people together who are trying to sort of rebuild society. And there's a pop star who is creating a new identity to kind of escape her past. And she ends up teaming up with this guy and his daughter. He lost his wife, but it is him and his daughter to survive. It's a bunch of people coming together. Kind of a found family positive book. It has an element of adventure to it. But I think all of Mike Chen's books really fall into this, this one and Here and Now and Then I think also as well. And Light Years from Home. I think they all fall into the category of you can't really go wrong in a nice way. What do you have for Rachel's spouse?
Mallory O'Meara
Exit west by Mohsen Hameen. I haven't talked about this book in a while, but God, I loved it. So this is a book that came out right when we. The year we started the show, 2017. And it is magical realism book about a couple. They are living in this Middle Eastern country that is torn apart by civil war. Things are very, very dangerous. And they're falling in love with each other. And suddenly these doors start appearing. And at first they were like, kind of, it's such a good book. And first they're kind of a secret and there's like a whisper network around the doors. And people realize that they can go in the doors and escape to another part of the, of the earth. But what is the cost of going through these doors? You know, like how many people can go through one door? So they're trapped in these sort of distressing and terrifying circumstances, but they are falling in love with each other and they need help and bravery to make decisions to save themselves and to escape from this. And it is, it's short, but it is really beautiful. And it's literally about a couple in this very terrifying situation having hope and getting through it. So I think it's perfect for, perfect for the situation. God, it's just, it's such a great book. So that is Exit west by Mohsina Mead.
Bria Grant
Mine is a Beginning at the End by Mike Chen.
Mallory O'Meara
