It was supposed to be a simple weekend away—friends renting a house, splitting up rooms, and settling in for the night after a long day.

Nothing about it felt unusual.

People were still awake, voices carrying through the walls, doors opening and closing like you’d expect in a house full of friends. Everyone had a place, and everyone was accounted for.

That’s what made what happened next so difficult to explain. It wasn’t a noise. It wasn’t something seen out of the corner of the eye. It was physical.

Something that shouldn’t have been possible—especially in a house where he knew exactly where everyone was. And even now, looking back on that night, he still can’t come up with a version of events that makes sense.
