Thanksgiving Weekend – Percussion Tent at Oeno Park. Prince Edward County. On October 11, after a wonderful Canadian Thanksgiving dinner, the family all headed out to the event Lit Up: Oeno after Dark at the Oeno sculpture park. It was a little chilly, but not too chilly to hang out and be part of the drumming circle in the drumming tent. It was hosted by interactive percussionist, Jesse Stewart. He provided bespoke instruments that invited exploration. From ages 2 to 102, everyone entering the tent tried their hand at making a beat. See what you think as you listen to my soundscape of one of the many groups that gathered in the tent that night. It starts a little haphazard until a beat is finally found. Duck, Geese, and Swan on Wellington Bay, Wellington, Ontario On Christmas day 2024, Special K and I took a stroll around the bay in Wellington Ontario in the beautiful County of Prince Edward. The only people around were the two of us, so my soundscape is pure Canadian Anatidae. It was difficult to determine which ones were duck geese or swan. Though I think all these types of Anatidae were present, ducks quack, geese honk. and swan make a trumpet sound. Listen and see what you think. A Joyful Runner (AI Generated Image) Listen : 3m14s I cut my finger, accidentally, at lunch. It was against our very sharp, never used, vegetable peeler, in the drawer. I was reaching for the meat thermometer. Seems like the protective cover came off or one of us nudged it off. I am such a baby. I bled for a while. A lot. And then we went to a closed walk-in clinic. Thinking stitches? I get it. Not enough doctors out there. Thankless job. Be a specialist.A little after we got back home, the bleeding slowed down. We dressed it. In thoseSteri-strips that simulate stitches. All the while me being a fucking baby. Because I don’t want it to get infected. Suppressed immune system. It is no one’s fault. Shit happens. I mean, fuck, we put the peeler in its protective plastic sheath. It must have come off,to effortlessly, slice into my finger like I was soft melon. I could almost hear the flesh object.I knew instantly it was that fucker! But then, realizing I was mad at an inanimate agentless object, focused on the blood sliding over my finger and put it under running water to expel whatever bacteria and metal was trying to invade my bloodstream. Run you fucking white blood cells and platelets!Run! You have a job to do! I fucking love platelets. So handy. It took an hour to finally clot. Maybe a little more because, I was being a baby. I am so bummed out, But you know, this is me going back to being me. Tapering off prednisone. No question. It altered my brain chemistry. Temporarily. I had a strange and wonderful experience, if only for a few weeks, my mind full of clarity and a singular sense of purpose that matters, and if even if it doesn’t matter, it matters to me. So much hope and love. It was a cocktail of joyI had never drunk. Something new. I was grateful for everything in my life, was extra gentle with myself. I even had a run of nights where I went to sleep excited about what the next day might bring. It is fleetingly rare to feel such anticipation about the promise of tomorrow. My life felt very special and precious. Every moment felt special and precious. I felt like, c’mon world, show me what you got! It hasn’t lasted. I guess I should do those dishes. ——– Equipment used: ASUS mixer, Apex Microphone, Windows 11, Audacity 3.7.1 With a shoutout to Kaz (@artbykaz.ca insta and threads) who reminded me that poetry is important too.
The CNE, otherwise known as the Canadian National Exhibition, runs for a little over two weeks at the end of the summer. The grounds are very near the northern shore of Lake Ontario in Toronto, about one to two kilometres away. One of the highlights of the CNE is the Air Show that features U.S. and Canadian Forces jets and planes. Sitting on the border of downtown and midtown in Toronto gave the neighbourhood a good chance to see the roaring jets flying overhead. Amid the cicadas, birds, insects, and random comments, the jets drowned out nature. Have a listen to the sound scene I captured of the air show overhead on its second to last afternoon, ahead of Labour Day 2023. Best listened in a quiet room with headphones. Maracatu Mar Aberto at the International Drumming Festival at Wychwood Barns, Toronto, Oct 17, 2021 On October 17, 2021 an International Drumming Festival was held at the Wychwood Barns in heart of what we now call midtown Toronto. Mostly, a cool and windy day, later in the afternoon, it rained which ultimately drove Special K and I home. But before we left I captured soundscene audio of some of the performances, presented here for your enjoyment. A spectacular cacaphony of fireworks heralded in the New Year on Jan 1 2022. We couldn’t watch them in person. Inglis Falls, Owen Sound September 2021 There were two families at the falls while we were there. Two of the boys, who had been running back and forth around the lookout point, stopped when they saw me taking pictures. I saw them out of the corner of my eye. They seemed curious about me, but when I turned around to look back at them, they scooted off as fast as the cascade of water. Inglis Falls in Owen Sound is a tourist attraction that no doubt saw many less people over the last two years. Have a listen to the rushing water.
