Erica Alexander
Kim, take it from. I've had it.
Kim Coles
Okay, very good. I've had it. Erica. No, I'm tired of it. And I'm not the only one who sees it. A lot of people see it.
Erica Alexander
A lot of people see what they see.
Kim Coles
You. Me, Me.
Erica Alexander
Ha ha. What do they see?
Kim Coles
They see what you do.
Erica Alexander
Well, whatever I do, I do it well. See, I do it well, you just did do it. Whatever it is. I didn't do it on purpose. So go ahead, tell me, say it. Say it. Say what you're saying. Cause no, you're talking too slow now. See, you gotta be like a cheater.
Kim Coles
Don't be like a t. Erica. Erica, turn around. What?
John Hinton
Look here, baby sister. I ain't come all this way from Cleveland to see no chick fight, and I do love a good chick fight. Nah, look here, look here.
Erica Alexander
Yay.
Kim Coles
He's here.
Erica Alexander
He's here.
Kim Coles
Huzz. All right, and welcome back to Reliving Single, the official unofficial Living Single Rewatch podcast. And I'm so excited today. You know why? Because my TV hubby is here. My dear friend is here. The extraordinary one and only John Hinton.
John Hinton
Yes. Yes, yes. Oh, thank you, ladies, ladies, for having me.
Erica Alexander
Thank you. So good to see you being here. You look fantastic.
Kim Coles
You look amazing.
Erica Alexander
Glowing. You're one of my most favorite people in the world. And it's because you bring the sun and the shine.
John Hinton
Oh, stop it. Stop it. Behave. Oh, Jesus.
Erica Alexander
If I see you, I want to swirl my nipples.
John Hinton
Late night right now. Tell you what. I tell you what, Tell you what.
Kim Coles
All right, so everyone wants to know, how did you get cast on Living Single? What's your story?
John Hinton
Hey, first thing that happened was we had an audition. I auditioned against everybody. It was. Warner Brothers was packed. It was about. I got there the first day, it was 60 something people out there.
Kim Coles
Wow.
John Hinton
The line was out. Warner Brothers. The line was outside the door. And I walked in and my landlord, I stayed right in North Hollywood. And my landlord, I told him I was gonna be a handyman. And he said, well, you gotta have a tool belt. So I walked down there with the tool belt and I had one hammer in there. That's. It wasn't no other tool, a screwdriver, nothing. It was the hammer. Cause that was, you know, that was a part of the scene. So I had a tool belt with a hammer and I walked in there and I saw Yvette and she was laughing.
Kim Coles
That's who she.
John Hinton
Oh, I'm sorry. Yvette Lee Bowser.
Kim Coles
But you call her Wifette.
John Hinton
Yvette, it's a wife. There's no reason for that. Anyway, so I see Yvette, and I found out that she wrote the show. So I was playing to her the whole time. Cause I'm like, if she laughing, I'm gonna get a gig. So I started playing to her, and I went there the first time, and I got a call back that was like, my first call back.
Kim Coles
Oh, God.
John Hinton
So I come back. It's less people, but we're still doing it. And I think I went like five times, six times, maybe. I mean, it got down, and it was just me and one other dude. And I told him, I said it was just me and one of the cats. I wasn't. As I think about it now, it was horrible. But at the time, I was just being honest. And I said, look here, partner, this show ain't for you. I didn't mean to take him out his game. Cause I think about it now, and I'm like, well, maybe he could have been so motivated. Say, you can't tell me that. And he did his best, but it wouldn't have mattered because I was getting this show. I know that I had to get the show. So I go in for the last reading, and the air conditioning was out, okay, at Warner Brothers, and they was doing some work on the roof, and so it was real loud. So I'm doing this take, and this is money. This the last one. I got to get this right. So I'm doing my thing, and they up on the roof, and they start making some noise, and they say, let's do it again. So I go back and do it again, and they start making some noise. The window was open. I stopped, went out to the window, said, shut the hell up. I'm trying to get a job. And they came back and did the gig.
Kim Coles
My God.
John Hinton
And that's how I got this show right here. I told him, shut up. I got things to do.
Erica Alexander
Yeah, well, thank you, but, you know, I love. I love it, but it's time to go to work. So let's put you to work. Ok. What's going on today, Kim?
Kim Coles
What's going on today is two best friends, Kyle and Overton, argue.
Erica Alexander
You go toe to toe with your boy Kyle.
John Hinton
Oh, my gosh.
Erica Alexander
And. Yeah. You ready, champ?
John Hinton
Well, look, I don't know if we gonna talk about argument between Kyle and Overton. I feel like I'm. You know, it's two on one. It's an argument that's between me and. Me and TC So he should be.
Erica Alexander
Here, why don't you hold it down?
John Hinton
Bro. Bro.
TC Carson
I got you.
John Hinton
Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, listen. TC concert. Yeah.
Erica Alexander
Nah, nah.
John Hinton
Let's do this. Nah.

Kim Coles
It's time for the rewind, where we watch and relive living single with you.
John Hinton
All right, slick, you ready to do this?
TC Carson
If you stay ready, you ain't gotta get ready. Watch dog bow wow. Come on.
John Hinton
Yeah. Yes, sir. Yeah. So today we're reliving Living Single, Season 1, Episode 11, the Naked Truth. Now, in this particular episode, I see Khadijah. Naked.
TC Carson
Naked.
Erica Alexander
Naked.
John Hinton
Oh, Lordy. Miss Claudie.
Kim Coles
Y' all ready to rumble?
John Hinton
Well, might as well. All right, let's go.
TC Carson
Let's get it.
Erica Alexander
Let it go.
TC Carson
You women are so petty. You don't hear men talking to each other like this.
Kim Coles
Oh, no, you right, Kyle. Cause you talking about Overton behind his back.
John Hinton
What'd you say, Kyle? I don't know, man.
TC Carson
Nothing I wouldn't say to your face.
Erica Alexander
How about that two day rant you went on after Overton went along on your date with Melissa?
John Hinton
I'm sure Kyle has more to say over there.
TC Carson
Man, don't be so sensitive.
John Hinton
How you gonna call me sensitive, Mr. I need a baby wipe from my behind?
TC Carson
Regine is being really messy right now.
John Hinton
Yes, yes, just that cackling just to.
TC Carson
Laugh on purpose and then backed away from it. That's really messy right there.
Erica Alexander
Well, she had to do something in the scene to instigate.
TC Carson
I mean, you always jump on the.
Erica Alexander
Horse, though, for sure. Yeah, but they all are loving this because this is unusual.
John Hinton
Yeah, we don't.
TC Carson
We don't fight.
Erica Alexander
Exactly.
Kim Coles
So this is. Is this the first time that we've seen you argue, then? I guess it is.
John Hinton
Yeah. This was our. The drama.
Erica Alexander
And I think Yvette wanted to flip the script a little bit. She wanted to. You know that people always say that women are fighters and men, oh, they get along, but that's actually not true. I think that y' all fight, so maybe she wanted to, you know, I don't know, break up the myth.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Kim Coles
Do you think that men fight the same way that women do?
TC Carson
No, I don't think so.
Kim Coles
How is it different?
TC Carson
Y' all dirty.
John Hinton
Yeah, dirty.
TC Carson
Y' all really. Y' all really nasty about how you do it.
Kim Coles
Are we.
TC Carson
Yeah, because you know what buttons to push, because the emotional toll.
John Hinton
Yeah. You got backstory, and y' all do some stuff from way back in the day. Y' all bring up some stuff. Guys, we just cut right to the chase.
Erica Alexander
I know.
John Hinton
That's. Yeah, we cut to the chase, and.
TC Carson
When it's over, Usually it's over.
John Hinton
Yeah, usually, you know, we'll fight, and then it's over with.
Kim Coles
Oh, come on. Sometimes men create mortal enemies.
John Hinton
No. But usually after you fight, then it's over with. But you. We actually will fight, and then we.
Kim Coles
Is that better?
John Hinton
Yeah, we'll fight and then don't get a beer. And it's over with.
Kim Coles
Okay, let me ask you this. Is it. What if it's something that is a moral issue or you stole someone's woman or something? Does it. You know, at what point does it become. That's it. We're done.
TC Carson
At this age, you don't really get upset with people. You just X them.
John Hinton
Them?
Erica Alexander
Yeah.
John Hinton
Okay.
TC Carson
You know, they become. You don't.
Erica Alexander
Persona nong.
John Hinton
Yeah.
TC Carson
You don't see them. You don't talk. You just X them out.
Kim Coles
Okay, that's. That's interesting. I love that you're including that. There's an age. There's a wisdom that comes by a certain age.
Erica Alexander
How is that wise, though? That sounds like emotional immaturity to say, you know, I ain't gonna argue. I'm just gonna X you out.
TC Carson
Why would I continue to try to talk to someone who really doesn't want to have this conversation? And if you don't want to have a conversation, then it's like, okay, well, off you go.
John Hinton
You're done.
TC Carson
Yep.
John Hinton
Sometimes you cross the line, and it's like, hey, you know, this ain't even worth talking about right. We done? Well, you don't get mad. Just be done, that's all.
Kim Coles
Don't get mad. I want that T shirt. You gotta decide how much it's worth it to you to maintain.
Erica Alexander
Well, for Kyle and Overton, they ain't done no, because of course, they're more than friends.
TC Carson
And brothers fight. But it's still family.
Erica Alexander
That's what's up.
Kim Coles
Overton just brought Kyle's mother into.
Erica Alexander
They're about to box. Maybe we should stop up for a visit. You are awful.
John Hinton
You started this whole thing, Max.
Erica Alexander
I did, didn't I? It's a gift.
John Hinton
I don't own it. Mind if I use the phone? I want to call the ymca. I'm sure there's a cop with my name on it somewhere in this big, lonely, concrete jungle.
Kim Coles
Oh, nonsense, Overton. You can stay with us now. I love the way you grab the pillow. It's sort of a passive aggressive experience of like, just maybe we'll get the idea that you want to stay.
John Hinton
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Erica Alexander
Yeah. Not too subtle.
TC Carson
It was.
John Hinton
Yeah. I needed. I didn't want to say it. The ymca. Who wants to stay? I can stay down here and be near the single.
TC Carson
It's the quick pack of trunks and luggage and bags that are still upstairs as a quick pack.
John Hinton
I got more stuff.
Kim Coles
And it hurt so bad that you did. The thing that would hurt him the most in this moment is you're throwing his albums out the window.
John Hinton
He threw my tools down.
Kim Coles
So y' all went for. You went for the gold jugular. Went for the jugular. Went for the jugular.
Erica Alexander
Yeah. But, you know, this is also the first time we hear Regine say, oh, Sookie, sookie now. But it's actually your character.
John Hinton
I said it first.
Erica Alexander
That's right.
John Hinton
I was the first one to say it first.
TC Carson
She was right.
Erica Alexander
Right. And then it became Regine's.
John Hinton
She took it.
Erica Alexander
But it was established by your character.
John Hinton
Of course.
Erica Alexander
You say of course because, you know.
John Hinton
I established some stuff.
Erica Alexander
By the way, I do have to ask a quick question. Why would you, as the superintendent and the handyman of the building, be leaving? Shouldn't that be your apartment?
TC Carson
Moving on.
John Hinton
I'm gonna go and shave.
TC Carson
Good idea.
Erica Alexander
Overton.
Kim Coles
We have a bathroom for that.
John Hinton
You know, it's funny how every household has their own rules.
Erica Alexander
Oh, yeah.
John Hinton
Oh, be in the bathtub.
Kim Coles
Kill the chaos. So let's talk about this. I personally love that you're wearing a shower cap on top of your hat.
John Hinton
Thanks, Kevin.
Kim Coles
That's comedy right there. Is that your Idea.
John Hinton
Yeah, I think so. That first year, I always had the hat, you know, because, you know, I was losing my hair. So I always had a hat on or either a lot of spray and powder.
Kim Coles
They would fill it in, wouldn't they?
John Hinton
I was so mad. It's like I finally get a show and get my big break and my hair started falling off. But, you know, you saw, I came back the next year, so.
Kim Coles
Yeah, you came back second season. Bald headed.
John Hinton
I ain't tell nobody.
Kim Coles
Didn't discuss it with the next year.
John Hinton
I just walk in with Yvette. Nobody. I just came in.
Kim Coles
But you have a nice shaped head, so you could do that.
John Hinton
Well, you know. Thank you. Yeah.
Erica Alexander
Amazing. By the way, you know, there he is sitting there, you know, Overton, in his robe. I have to tell you, you are so fine in that robe.
Kim Coles
You can look amazing here.
John Hinton
Yes. Oh, stop it. Stop it.
Erica Alexander
With snake hips, people.
Kim Coles
Sinewy.
John Hinton
Stop. You know how humble I am.
Erica Alexander
No, it's true. That's one of the sexiest things he ever wore was his robe.
Kim Coles
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you walk in and she's getting, and I love that she has a leg that just, you know, pops out of the shower.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Kim Coles
And then here you are.
John Hinton
Nice leg.
Kim Coles
In the bathtub.
John Hinton
No. Where is that from?
Kim Coles
No.
TC Carson
Singing in the bathtub.
Kim Coles
Bugs Bunny singing in the bathtub.
John Hinton
Thank you. It doesn't take long.
Erica Alexander
That's right.
Kim Coles
You have an encyclopedic knowledge of comedy and animation and cartoons and funny people. And you pull from all of that and then you make it your own. So that was Bugs Bunny. Thank you for that.
John Hinton
It was, it was. That's all. The first year, that's all I did was just pull from, from different sources because that was my first acting gig. I, I, since I was in like high school or something.
Erica Alexander
Okay, let me ask you, because you have such a different personality, John Hinton versus Overton, to me, and yet you lean very much into, I think, the freedom of feeling, you know, kind of young. And I don't know, a lot of places where men don't like to go, they want to be the one that knows. And you sort of held your strength, your masculinity right next to something that was much more fragile and naive and playful. I love that.
John Hinton
I thought that that's what the character called for, to match with Sinclair. And that's why those two worked so well together, you know, because they were very similar. And it's like everybody on that show and everybody that watched knew those two were gonna get Together.
Kim Coles
That's true.
John Hinton
You know, so that was it. I was just trying to line up with her, and. Yeah. And it worked out.
Erica Alexander
Where are you from? You're from Cleveland originally.
John Hinton
Cleveland, Ohio? Yes, ma'. Am.
Kim Coles
And then the character from Cleveland. And you all were best friends as children in Cleveland?
John Hinton
In Cleveland.
TC Carson
Went to school together?
John Hinton
Yep. Cause I asked Yvette, I'm like, where are the characters from? She said, I don't know. I said, they from Cleveland. And then we started incorporating things, and that's how we got the. When the Browns left Cleveland and Jim Brown was on the show and all of that, you know, so it was.
Kim Coles
Yeah, yeah, right. Let's talk about this. Khadijah gets out the shower, and there you are seeing her. I want to know, what was she wearing? What was she really wearing in that scene?
John Hinton
She had, like, the bodysuit. Yeah, bodysuit. Yeah, the bodysuit. And, you know, to cover up all that goodness. Great day in the morning.
Erica Alexander
But we noticed it wasn't overly sexualized. They didn't sort of do that. It was like seeing a sibling.
John Hinton
And we had to do it that way, you know, because it was just that scene that was like, our first, like, risque type scene, I guess, you know, of anybody, like, supposedly naked, you know, so we had to play it, and Overton got to play it like a kid. Anyway, you know, like, after we hollered for a while, and then I just. I just looked and I just went, y best said, no, no, we not doing that. But after, like, about the fourth or fifth take, we could always play. And that's. That's the thing. We still nothing but kids, man. All we did was play. And it's like, sometimes people will say, it looked like y' all really having fun on that show. I'm like, man, what you saw on the show is nothing compared to what we did. Like, some. Sometimes I would tell people, like, you never see the funniest take, because the funniest take, Erica would do something, and the audience would laugh for a minute. It's like, we don't have a minute for laughter. So the funniest ones don't get through. They cutting everything for time. So it's like. Cause we would just have fun. And then it's like. And then they say, five, four, three, two. It's like, all right, come on, let's go on and do this, and so we can get back to playing. So, you know.
Erica Alexander
Yeah, yeah. Well, you were playing, and I think it was nice to see the juxtaposition between your Character. And the ladies, you know, downstairs, because you were shaving in their sink. It was kind of disgusting. I'm not gonna lie.
John Hinton
It really is. I didn't know, especially when I blew the whiskers in there.
TC Carson
And welcome to Kyle's World. That was Kyle's World.
Erica Alexander
That's right.
Kim Coles
And that's we're getting a taste of what's really going on upstairs.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Erica Alexander
Are you have any deal breakers when you're living with somebody, something you don't like? Like, look, do not do this in the sink.
John Hinton
Or.
TC Carson
No cats.
Erica Alexander
No cats.
TC Carson
No cats.
Kim Coles
Yeah.
TC Carson
Okay, no cats.
Kim Coles
Do you have any rules?
John Hinton
No.
Kim Coles
What about you?
Erica Alexander
Do you have any?
Kim Coles
I do. No crumbs in the bed.
Erica Alexander
Ooh, God.
Kim Coles
No crumbs in the bed.
Erica Alexander
That might be my snack. In a bed.
Kim Coles
No crumbs, however, farting fully allowed, anytime, anywhere.
Erica Alexander
You get the crumbs. What you talking about? No, when you think comes out the other end, it's not just smoke.
John Hinton
Oh, my gosh, not just smoke.
Erica Alexander
Ashes and all sorts of stuff. I mean crumbs.
Kim Coles
Okay, let me clarify. Crumbs from the eating of the cookies or the snacks or the people.
Erica Alexander
But your ass crumbs are okay. I think that. Listen, why do you have ass crumbs?
Kim Coles
I don't know anybody with ass crumbs.
Erica Alexander
She said you can fart, but you can't put a, you know, some cookie crumbs. I'd rather take the cookie crumbs than gas.
Kim Coles
Oh, I think gas is fine.
Erica Alexander
I think the audience should decide. Do you want somebody who's gaseous? Yeah, somebody who.
John Hinton
Just somebody.
TC Carson
It's not an either or.
Kim Coles
I'm giving you my list of. I'm letting you. Okay.
Erica Alexander
What about you Go with God for me? I have quite a few.
Kim Coles
But of course you particular.
John Hinton
This one's particular.
Erica Alexander
The way I grew up. Because I grew up, we all five in the same bedroom. And we only had our side of the bed and a pillow in one drawer and whatever. So I can be very sort of just like, wait a minute, that's my side. But you know, I'm not really like that in life. But I don't like anybody sitting on my bed. Cause I feel like that's the nest in their outside clothes.
Kim Coles
Oh, agreed, agreed.
Erica Alexander
Agreed to me. Please don't do that. And other than that, I'm pretty easy to live with. Except for the other 10 things. But I won't bring those.
Kim Coles
Except the ass crumbs. How do you get ass crumbs?
Erica Alexander
Who have you when you fart? It Floats out.
Kim Coles
Oh, but it's not. It's just gas.
John Hinton
None of this is on the teleprompter.
Erica Alexander
I don't need this.
John Hinton
How do we have a script here? But something has gone terribly.
Erica Alexander
Right, next clip.
John Hinton
Wait, is there. Is there another clip? Yeah. Let's run that baby. I should just pack up my steamer trunk and hit the curb.
Erica Alexander
Overton, you do not have to go. But you got the promise to chill. Look, you trying so hard not to.
Kim Coles
Be in the way.
Erica Alexander
You tripping all over yourself. Just kick back, put your feet up on the table.
John Hinton
Really?
Erica Alexander
Sure.
John Hinton
Wow. Kyle never lets me do this at home.
Erica Alexander
What you mean Kyle never lets you? Don't let him run you.
John Hinton
Oh, he doesn't run me. He just suggests things over and over again until I do what he says.
Kim Coles
Oh, Overton.
Erica Alexander
It's not healthy to let people walk all over you.
Kim Coles
Unless, of course, that someone employs you and gives you a place to live. Then you just don't have a choice.
John Hinton
You know, that's a good point. I should have a long talk with Kyle.
Kim Coles
Sure.
Erica Alexander
Go right upstairs.
Kim Coles
Yeah.
John Hinton
Why don't you take your bags for good luck.
Kim Coles
So we've got compassion for you. So how do we deal with the compassion that we have for you versus the comfort of you just coming and taking over? Of course Sinclair wants you there.
John Hinton
Yeah, but the women always looked out for me. And that's the thing. And that's why I was there in the first place. You know, regardless of, you know, what Regine was saying, it's like y' all always looked out for me. And on the show, we all looked out for each other.
Kim Coles
We did. Very much so.
John Hinton
That was the thing.
Erica Alexander
Kyle Overton's Khadijah. Cause you're kind of bossy and rigid. And, you know, Sinclair has that. They kind of mirror each other. They're really characters, but they have a different version of that. But for Overton, you're like his overseer. Am I wrong for that? Am I wrong for that?
TC Carson
That's his boy.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Kim Coles
Mm.
Erica Alexander
Well, why are you trying to always tell him what to do?
TC Carson
He's a little more. He feels that he's a little more well read.
Kim Coles
Okay.
TC Carson
And so he knows a little more. He wants his boy to know the proper way to do things. Overton has more common sense than Kyle does at times. And you hear it in the wisdom that he talks about when he uses his down home, Uncle Tibby and all those people. If you really listen to what he's saying, he's really dropping knowledge all the Time dropping knowledge. That's why Kyle is his boy.
Kim Coles
Okay?
TC Carson
Cause Kyle understands that people are always.
Erica Alexander
Talking about avoidant personalities online and that type of thing, that men can be avoidant personalities. Like, they'll push down things and not talk about things and that. What do you think? Is that real? Sort of walk away as opposed to deal with things.
John Hinton
This is way too heavy for me. I just came here for some laughs. And we talk about the script now. Y' all talking about some stuff. But. No, that's what I'm saying. All right.
TC Carson
I'll be upstairs if you'd like to talk.
John Hinton
No, we can settle it right here. All you got to do is apologize. For what, man? Look, I'm going home. Are you coming? I have a home right here. And this is where I be when you decide you're sorry.
TC Carson
Well, then you had better file a change of address, because you are not getting an apology from me.
John Hinton
Get out of our house.
Erica Alexander
Get out of our house. Okay, so enough is enough.
Kim Coles
So we see Overton standing up for himself. Yeah, Right.
John Hinton
That's good.
Kim Coles
But we see this beautiful moment where you're like, enough is like you said. This is what guys do. Like, they fight and they go, all right, man, that's it. So you would come in, like, going, come on, bro, this is enough.
John Hinton
Come on. Come on up. Come on home.
Kim Coles
Right. But you're, like, egged on by us.
John Hinton
Yeah, because y' all let me be me. See, it's your fault. It's really your fault. Y' all let me do it. So, you know, so now I'm standing my ground.
Kim Coles
Do you think that Kyle gives a sort of non apology in that scene?
TC Carson
The fact that he came downstairs.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Kim Coles
Was the apology.
TC Carson
Yeah, that was the apology.
Kim Coles
And he was supposed to get that, wasn't he?
TC Carson
Came downstairs? Yeah.
Erica Alexander
Do men know how to apologize?
TC Carson
Some do.
Kim Coles
I think some do.
TC Carson
Do you do? Absolutely.
Erica Alexander
Okay.
TC Carson
When I was younger.
John Hinton
No.
TC Carson
No.
Erica Alexander
What made the change? What made the difference?
TC Carson
Experience.
Erica Alexander
Okay.
Kim Coles
So even if you felt that you had done something wrong. Air quotes. You still wouldn't apologize?
TC Carson
When I was younger, uh, no. I would change my behavior, but I wouldn't apologize.
Kim Coles
Oh, guess what? That's the best apology of all. Change your behavior. Actually, there's some people say, don't give me an apology. Change your behavior. Let me see an action. I don't want no apology. Give me action.
Erica Alexander
John. Do you know how to apologize now?
John Hinton
I do.
Erica Alexander
Okay.
John Hinton
When I was younger, it was just about winning the argument, you know? Okay. And that's all it's like, well, only thing I was worried about was what somebody did to me. When you get older, you realize that it's just more important to be happy.
TC Carson
Can you say that again, please?
John Hinton
Well, I said it once, but I will.
TC Carson
I'm not saying it again.
John Hinton
It's more important to be what? When you. When you get older, you realize it's more important to just be happy. Yes. You know, it's like nobody's got time to go back and forth. You know, I. I get into arguments and think it's like, well, this is what I'm gonna say next time, you know, we in the argument. And I know she gonna do this. So here we go. You know, you're going back and forth, and it's like, come on. Or you can just be happy and just say, look, it's not that major. It's a lot of things that I wish I'd have done different. And I know it's a growing thing, but, you know, I just look back on who I was then, and I don't really like what I saw. I tried. I did the best I could at the time, and, you know, but you.
TC Carson
Wouldn'T be able to sit in where you are now if you hadn't gone through what you did then.
John Hinton
Yeah, that's true.
Erica Alexander
Thank you for saying that.
Kim Coles
This is gonna help someone watching this so much. These kinds of conversations that. Self reflection and action.
Erica Alexander
Yeah.
John Hinton
Beautiful.
Erica Alexander
Because repair isn't gender specific.
Kim Coles
It is not.
Erica Alexander
You know what I mean?
TC Carson
No, it's not repair.
Kim Coles
No.
Erica Alexander
All right.
Kim Coles
Is there another clip? I believe there is. In five.
John Hinton
There's more.
Kim Coles
Three.
John Hinton
So how is it living here all alone, having fun with your albums?
TC Carson
Yeah, what's left of them. That was really small, man.
John Hinton
No smaller than dropping a man's heritage hammer down the dumbwaiter.
TC Carson
Okay, okay, okay. So things got a little out of control.
John Hinton
Hey, man, but what you said, that really hurt, man.
Kim Coles
Overton, man. What did I say?
John Hinton
You said something about.
TC Carson
You know, honestly, man, I really can't remember.
John Hinton
Me either.
TC Carson
So, wait, it sounds like there's really nothing to apologize for.
John Hinton
Hmm. Guess not. Well, then, what do you say we.
TC Carson
Just forget all this and you move back in? Look, I'm not. I'm not telling you. I'm asking you.
John Hinton
I missed y'. All. That's all I missed. That's it. I love the way that. That all came together. But I was looking at that shirt with Overton on there, and it used to drive me crazy. I told Yvette, I said, why do I have to Every week I got to have this shirt on with my name. People knowing that. She said, nope, we're gonna keep doing it. She said. Cause people gonna know your name.
Kim Coles
Oh, wow.
John Hinton
I walk through airports. My middle name, they said, that's Overton Wakefield Jones. Why? That was. So she did that, and I'll never forget her for saying that. And people just. They really did know my name. And to this day, they might not even know the show. They might not even say, well, but I know you was Overton. You know, they got that. You know, so it was like, shout out to the creator of the show and Ms. Lee.
Kim Coles
Now, this is a powerful moment because the men make up.
Erica Alexander
I mean, the 90s pushed a certain type of toxic masculinity. It just did. We had. That's the age of gangster rap coming in. And hoes and, you know, the idea of bros before hoes. And you guys were the antidotes. Overton and Kyle, you're the blueprint for the future inside of a world that was turning decidedly, decidedly darker when it comes to how men saw women.
John Hinton
Yeah, but look who we had to work with. We had y', all, so we had to do it. You know, we. What else could we do? We were so fortunate to get this cast together and to work with each other and knew what we were presenting every week and people coming up and showing that love. Every time that apartment door opened up, somebody's favorite character was walking in.
Kim Coles
That's true.
John Hinton
And that was the thing. So we gotta look out for y'.
Erica Alexander
All.
John Hinton
You know, that's what we do, Shorty. It ain't no what.
TC Carson
And it was family from the beginning. Yeah, it was family from the beginning. And it was a safe space. It was a space to be creative. It was a space that you could actually leave yourself open for something strange to happen. And a lot of times, they would keep it.
John Hinton
And then you learn so much from baby sister. Cause she would just do. She would pick up a glass and make you laugh. She was all about. You would. Stage business.
TC Carson
Yes, yes.
John Hinton
She was all about find something to do. Look at her.
TC Carson
Find something to do.
John Hinton
And she started eating.
Erica Alexander
Oh, Lord.
John Hinton
Yeah, that was just. That was you. Something to do, right? And it's like you pick up on it. And that's what I was trying to. Cause like I said, it was my first acting gig. So I was just picking up on things that all of y' all did. So it was just. That was me. I was just like a sponge.
Erica Alexander
You're generous because you poured into us as much as you Were taking in, if not more, because just your very presence said something about our authenticity.
Kim Coles
So there's a legend of the two of you again, taking care of us, not only on the set, but off the set. So as a cast, we would go and go places. We would go on PR trips and, you know, PR appearances. And you all had the generosity to not only be the stars that you are, but you would also be protecting us. And there's a couple of stories of you playing security whether you wanted to or not.
John Hinton
We had to for the four of us. Yeah.
Kim Coles
How did you feel about that as.
TC Carson
We out with the. With our ladies, with our sisters? You have to be security.
John Hinton
That's it. Yeah.
TC Carson
And we didn't really think about how well we did have security every once in a while.
John Hinton
Yeah, every once in a while.
Erica Alexander
But you say you had to as if, you know, what else.
John Hinton
Yeah.
TC Carson
What else are you supposed to do?
John Hinton
Somebody had to look out for you. Like you. You. One time we were somewhere, and this guy, he wanted an autograph. He comes up to Kim Coles. He wants an autograph. He's like, I don't have a pen, but I'll give you a hug. And I'm like, no, you don't do that. That's what she would do. And one time, I was on the elevator with Lil Kim Fields, and this guy gets on afterwards, and obviously, he a fan. I see him looking at her, and he's a fan, and she's going to punch the button on her floor. And I'm like, oh, back up. Pick your floor, fella.
Kim Coles
Yeah, yeah.
John Hinton
He was just on there trying to see, you know, so we had to look out for. That's what we did, you know, so.
Erica Alexander
See, isn't that how sexy that was?
John Hinton
No, no, no, no, no.
Kim Coles
Go ahead.
Erica Alexander
That right there was, like, something that not necessarily a network and. Or producers could give us. By the way, we did have security. We had Michael Clark Duncan at the door.
Kim Coles
We had Michael.
Erica Alexander
Michael. And yet we had our personal, you know, brothers who were literally like, I don't know. You saw things before. We saw.
Kim Coles
Yeah.
Erica Alexander
I was gonna hear y' all saying, go, somebody get baby sister. Go get. Like you saw it.
John Hinton
Cause we had to look at the big picture, you know? Cause y' all were just in the moment. Y' all were just out there. Love, exciting and new. Y' all were just bored. See, y' all was just going. I'm sitting there watching, making sure everything is co. Cause I'm seeing people looking at y' all certain ways.
TC Carson
So, yeah, and that was the other thing. Like the attention was on you all. And neither one of us really craved that kind of attention.
John Hinton
Yeah.
TC Carson
So it was like, okay, you.
Erica Alexander
And I have to say that at least in my life, it is. It's the standard. It's the standard. No one should do less than what y' all did for us in terms of how we pick and choose men.
Kim Coles
Did you feel our love back at you? Was it returned in full?
John Hinton
Not at all.
Erica Alexander
Yes, we did.
John Hinton
To some self centered women too, man. That's the thing you can't do enough.
Kim Coles
You felt it back.
John Hinton
Oh, come on.
TC Carson
Oh, absolutely.
John Hinton
Yeah, we felt it.
TC Carson
You know, again, it was. It was fun. It wasn't going to work. You went to go hang out with your people. You went to go hang out with your people and make some magic. That's what work was. And you got paid.
Kim Coles
You all have this patented handshake greeting. Dap. Tell us all about the watchdog bow wow. What it comes from, what it means so the audience fully understands.
John Hinton
It came from the pilot. We were cheating, doing some game. Cause we pointed to the watch and barked or something. I was like, oh, it's watchdog bow wow. Yeah. Bow wow Bow wow.
Erica Alexander
Brilliant.
John Hinton
So that was. That was where it came from. And then the bow wow just came later.
Kim Coles
So that became your special sitcom, you know, catchphrase or brotherhood dad.
John Hinton
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that was that. Watch dog. Love it. Oh, wow.
Kim Coles
It had rhythm. It had music. It had a musicality to it too.
Erica Alexander
Yeah, yeah.
John Hinton
Well.
Kim Coles
And you knew that everything was gonna be all right when y'. All. Watchdog bow wow.
Erica Alexander
This just shows also how fast your mind work. Like watchdog. He barks, points to his watch. Watchdog Bow. It's beautiful.
Kim Coles
It's beautiful. Did you all have any pre show rituals or pre show moments that you used to ground yourself before we worked each week?
John Hinton
No, I didn't.
Kim Coles
Other than we prayed.
John Hinton
Yeah, we pray as a group.
Kim Coles
We would pray. We prayed and then we would have a post ritual after Tate night. Once we went to Tuesdays, we would go over to the Hilton. To the Hilton.
John Hinton
To my hometown.
TC Carson
Yeah.
John Hinton
To the fabulous. Yep. And just sit there. And nobody knew who we were. And we were on like this show and we sit there and just every. Every Tuesday night, I got a lot of pictures from. Oh, I want to see them.
TC Carson
I do. I do, definitely.
Kim Coles
And whoever our guest star was, sometimes they would come.
John Hinton
They would come out with us. Yeah, I was enjoying the moment, man. You know, it was just like, look at. Look at what we Doing. It's like nobody else knew us, you know, because this is, you know, it's like before the show even aired. But it was always cool. We would always get together. We were always tight from the beginning.
TC Carson
Tight like glue.
Kim Coles
This is the reverb. Our time to reflect on the episode's themes and how they still echo throughout the culture.
Erica Alexander
So why do you think Kyle and Overton's relationship was so special?
John Hinton
I think we played well together. We were two totally different people. We were friends all through school, you know, back home in Cleveland, and we brought that and we had that love that, you know, that's how we ended up in New York. But we were different people and everybody stayed in they lane. You know, it's like he did his thing, I did my thing, and we just meshed because we had been friends for so long. So it was just. It was just a natural thing. That's what I thought. What about you?
Erica Alexander
You got an odd couple too, like blue collar, white collar, Metropolitan, Felix and Oscar. And very good friends, definitely.
TC Carson
And it was. I think I could have just said.
John Hinton
That instead of just. Just cut right to the taste. But you, you are so wise. You. You cut. You see what she did. Go on and tell her. But she already told us what's happening. But go on.
TC Carson
Well, I think it was us both coming to LA too. We were both new to the city. All this was both new to us and so. And our friendship was new. So coming to la, we were both experiencing this whole new world and so we didn't have a whole lot of friends.
Kim Coles
So you probably.
TC Carson
I know I didn't. Yeah, I know I didn't. So we were. My closest person was the person I was going to work with.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Kim Coles
Wow.
TC Carson
And so that helped to fuel the friendship on stage again. That was with everybody, though.
Erica Alexander
Yes.
TC Carson
We were out there and I didn't have a car at first. I was walking to the ranch. Remember I lived around the corner.
John Hinton
Yeah, that's right. Yeah. Yeah.
TC Carson
So you all were my world.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Kim Coles
So it's fortunate that you found in John and John, you found in TC the type of. Of integrity in, In. In a man that you could hang out with and even be friends because it could have turned out real, real different. Like you all, you enjoy. So you were different. You were coming from a different place, but still you found common ground to. To. To find. And I think it's the integrity because you both.
TC Carson
Hey, good people.
Kim Coles
Incredible. You're both good people.
TC Carson
Good people. Yeah.
John Hinton
Yeah. We were outsiders, you know, like I said, I think I. I had been here a few more years than you, but it was just. It was just the fact that we had something. We both realized how special it was to be with you guys. You know? Remember we did the pilot, and during that summer, Lil Kim Fields had that.
TC Carson
Play, and we went in Bagel.
Kim Coles
All that. You ventured to Winnebago for us.
John Hinton
And so we were just cool from the start, you know? And it was like, so that was just family. But like I told you all the time Tuesday night. Yeah, what I do, I fall in love. Cause I see y' all come out of makeup. I see y' all dressed up. And we. And we would sit in the back and, like, the audience would just go crazy, and we would try to figure out who. Which outfit it was. We'd say, oh, oh, that Latifah. Okay, that's queer. And then one time, Kim Fields had that gold lame or something on. We called her Peaches. Oh, no, that. Peaches right there.
Kim Coles
You had little side extra nicknames for us that we didn't even know about.
John Hinton
We threw some stuff around, but we would just sit there and watch and just love the audience reaction, because the audience loved you as much as we did.
Erica Alexander
And the male fans obviously reacted to you because you're a stockbroker. You say you got a lot of play. Like, can you talk a little bit about how people related to you?
TC Carson
I've had young people, young brothers come up and say they understood how to actually have conversation with women by listening to Kyle and how he dealt with you.
Erica Alexander
That's frightening.
TC Carson
No, no. But think about the conversations he had with Khadijah and the conversations he had with Regine and the conversations he had with Sinclair.
Kim Coles
He did, you know, so there was the comedy. Broad pieces, like, you women are always this, that. But there would always be a grounded moment in there somewhere.
TC Carson
And it was never disrespectful.
Kim Coles
Never.
TC Carson
It was never me. Well, it was.
Kim Coles
Y' all would have your mom cut.
TC Carson
Spirited, but not mean. Mean.
Erica Alexander
Not except to everyone. Except for Max.
TC Carson
Was he really mean?
John Hinton
Mean?
Erica Alexander
Is that a joke?
John Hinton
Yes.
Erica Alexander
Were you there for five years? But they were mean to each other on purpose.
TC Carson
But was that mean, though?
Kim Coles
But the joke.
John Hinton
Cause y' all loved each other, right? Yeah. This was.
TC Carson
So what's it mean if it was foreplay? What's it mean?
Erica Alexander
Because if it turns you on, it doesn't mean it's not mean.
John Hinton
Yeah. Yeah.
Kim Coles
Oh, but what does it say about you if it. If. If it's mean and it still turns you on?
John Hinton
Twisted System. That's some sick stuff. There you go. There you go. You cut right. There you go. That's some sick, twisted stuff right there. Like, that's a turn on. Yeah, see, there you go. And we go right back to that.
Kim Coles
Back to the nipple.
John Hinton
Hey, we're never too far away, by the way.
Erica Alexander
Nipple gate. You know, by the way, they did let you, your character, play with your nipples.
TC Carson
They did, several times.
Erica Alexander
He got to play with his nipp. They kept hiding. They kept putting more and more, you know, padding over as well.
John Hinton
They should whisper.
Erica Alexander
We can see your nipples and all.
John Hinton
That's right.
Erica Alexander
He's playing with his.
John Hinton
Yeah, that was different. Yeah, nobody. Nobody cared. Nobody cared about mine. But yours, on the other hand, y' all were getting all. Y' all was getting all them letters from. From the prisons. Oh, y. Oh. And. And it's like, look. Yeah, you. You can't do that to them prisoners. They. They sitting there watching every week and just waiting for that one time that Band Aid don't do his job. But I did. Look, I've said too much. I've said too much, but, yeah, it was really cold in the studio.
TC Carson
All the time.
John Hinton
Yeah, it was very cold. So Band Aid, we would always just stop, and we'd have to stop every Tuesday. Every Tuesday, somebody needed a nipple coverage.
Kim Coles
That's a credit to you all, too, that you didn't ever make us feel, you know, like, even if something was a little too much cleavage, a little. It wasn't like. It was like, baby sister, you might want.
John Hinton
You might want to tighten that up. That's true.
Kim Coles
And they would say that.
Erica Alexander
Yeah.
Kim Coles
Yeah. So what have men said to you, John, about your character?
John Hinton
It was the best feeling was, like, from my friends at home who thought it was legit. It was authentic. It was like, man, I ain't know, you know? And that was the best feeling to get love from your hometown and your actual friends who, like, I had real friends that would sit up there, they wouldn't just say something, you know, was good when it wasn't, you know, and it was like they thought it was legit, you know, and that was always a great feeling. Best compliments I got got. The best was from Sir Lawrence Fishburne.
Erica Alexander
Oh, what?
John Hinton
Wow. I was at some reward show, and he.
Erica Alexander
A reward.
John Hinton
I'm dressed up all nice and stuff, and this guy grabs my shoulder, turned around, and it's Lawrence Fishburne. And he said. He just looked at me, and, you know, that's an intense brother.
Kim Coles
For sure. For sure.
John Hinton
And you Gotta be ready for this intensity. And he looked at me and said, we all know. We all know your character. We've all grown up with your character. We love your character. And he just told me what a great job. And I'm sitting there. That was Laurence Fishburne. And he said he likes what I'm doing. And that just knocked me out. Wow. Yeah. I never considered myself an actor. I was a standup that got a very fortunate standup, you know? Cause it was at a time when they were using standups and to get that from these people that you really respect, and, you know, they doing good work. And when he said that, I was like, man, maybe I got something.
Kim Coles
Maybe I got something.
John Hinton
You know? So that was the best. But getting that love from your hometown and people that you really respect and you admire and they like what you're doing, you know, you can't beat that.
Kim Coles
I want to know, what moment did each of you feel that this was a hit or that this was gonna work? You were like, this is it. Uh.
TC Carson
Oh, the tango. Cause again, they cut it. They can cut what they wanna cut. They can let it go when they wanna let it go. So you don't really. I wasn't really looking for it to go long.
Erica Alexander
Oh, oh, you mean they can cut a series short? So you weren't looking forward to. Got it. You had a decidedly sort of pessimistic point of view about.
TC Carson
I was looking for the next gig.
Kim Coles
You were, like, waiting.
Erica Alexander
You know, I told. I told her the same thing.
John Hinton
Even with the cliffhanger, like, that.
TC Carson
I was looking for the next gig.
John Hinton
Really? Yeah.
Erica Alexander
I told Kim. I said, coming in. And to me, I said, it wasn't what people thought. Like, oh, when did you know? I was like, what? It was a gig. I kept thinking about, I'm gonna go to New York soon. I didn't think like you. Cause by that time, we were number one in the country. So you didn't believe your own lying eyes.
TC Carson
But I wasn't watching. I wasn't paying attention.
Kim Coles
That's right.
Erica Alexander
You're all watching it.
TC Carson
I wasn't paying attention to none of that. I was doing music.
Erica Alexander
Understood?
John Hinton
Yeah.
Erica Alexander
And what about you?
John Hinton
I knew we had something special. The pilot, when y' all was singing My Girls, I said, we got a show. I knew that watching y' all in the bathroom and you with the. With the plunger or whatever and everybody. You had to curl it on something, you know? And I. And I'm like, oh, we got something. And the reaction from the crowd and People loved you.
TC Carson
They did.
John Hinton
I knew that from jump. It wasn't a matter of if we got a show or not. It's like, oh, we got a show here. I was watching y' all and I'm just sitting in the back and I just had the biggest smile on my face. I knew pretty early.
Erica Alexander
Even as personalities here, you're the ying and the yang. You think, no, it's not going. You need a whole year. You're from the beginning. It's gonna go. And the relationship together, you know, as the characters and in you. What do you think the legacy of that is?
TC Carson
Brotherhood.
John Hinton
Yeah, brotherhood.
TC Carson
They took care of each other and they took care of their community. And I think those are two things that are really important for us right now in this country right now. We have to take care of each other and take care of our community.
Erica Alexander
So we love, love, love, love, love, love having both of y' all here. And we don't, we don't wanna let you go ever.
John Hinton
No.
Erica Alexander
So let's play a game. Truth or challenge?
John Hinton
Uh huh.
Erica Alexander
No, kids, this is similar to truth or dare? And we ask you to choose from the truth pile or the challenge pile.
TC Carson
Okay.
Erica Alexander
Okay. So truth or challenge?
TC Carson
All right.
John Hinton
Okay.
Erica Alexander
You wanna do John, I'll do John. Okay, go.
Kim Coles
Truth or challenge?
John Hinton
This is gonna be fun, right?
Erica Alexander
Yeah.
TC Carson
Okay.
John Hinton
All right. No.
TC Carson
Cause see, that said, it's going be truth.
Kim Coles
Okay. Is it true that you used to slip me the tongue?
John Hinton
Oh.
TC Carson
Inquiring minds want to know.
John Hinton
You. You said this was going to be fun.
Erica Alexander
That wasn't.
John Hinton
Well, you know, the thing is, I, I was, I was a method actor. Yeah.
Kim Coles
Actually, we would slip each other the tongue and they would have to call. Cut. Oh. Oh, John. Kim, we got that cut. We got that one. John. Kim.
TC Carson
Yeah, Kim.
Kim Coles
John, we got that one. It's like, hey, listen, I, I'm, I'm, I am also method, so. Thank you.
John Hinton
Thank you for always having fresh breath.
Erica Alexander
Truth and challenge. Truth. Did y' all actually have a thing with each other?
Kim Coles
A thing.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Kim Coles
Kept it professional?
John Hinton
Yeah. And we were very.
Erica Alexander
A professional.
John Hinton
We're very, very, very professional.
Erica Alexander
Okay.
Kim Coles
That's all I see.
John Hinton
Yes.
Erica Alexander
Truth or challenge?
John Hinton
Truth.
Erica Alexander
Is it true you and Erica me were buck naked underneath that kente cloth?
TC Carson
Oh, well, no, we were not buck naked.
Erica Alexander
I was.
TC Carson
We were semi naked.
Kim Coles
Semi. What's semi naked?
TC Carson
Parts were covered and parts were not covered.
Erica Alexander
You know what? And he complained that they didn't give him a big enough cover for his part.
TC Carson
I didn't.
Erica Alexander
There were several complaints lodged. I Don't think this is going to cover. Thank you. Thank you for playing us.
John Hinton
That was fun.
TC Carson
Was it?
John Hinton
It was fun.
Erica Alexander
Is it true that UTC slipped me Erica, more than the tongue on that white dress episode?
TC Carson
That was a hot ass episode.
John Hinton
It was.
Erica Alexander
It was.
Kim Coles
Did he slip you the tongue? Did you slip you?
Erica Alexander
No. Took me more than the tongue.
Kim Coles
More than the tongue. Oopsy daisy. Oh, Sookie. Sookie, out.
Erica Alexander
We were never a thing, but might get addicted. So nasty when you did that.
John Hinton
Oh, my gosh.
Erica Alexander
You see me break up. It's. That's me breaking up. Like, God.
Kim Coles
Well, I'm going to ask John this one. Just a while. Is there someone, a guest star that came on the show that you would have dated?
Erica Alexander
Oh, that's.
John Hinton
Oh, my goodness gracious.
TC Carson
Not as pretty as our fourth.
John Hinton
Absolutely. But we had. We had a few stunners, some showstoppers come through there.
Kim Coles
I told you, John loves women.
John Hinton
Yeah, yeah.
Kim Coles
A couple show stopping sizes. That's the other thing. You never made us feel as if. And you mentioned that our bodies were wrong at any point. And that's not always the case behind the scenes. You know, the suits are like, you're gaining too much weight or you're not this. Or you're too much this. Or not enough this.
John Hinton
And I was back there feeding y' all snacks. I'm concerned there could never be too much of you here. Help us out. Help us always have snacks. Always. You know, I believe, mama. You know I believe in snacking, girl, please. Yes, indeed.
Erica Alexander
Well, I think it's now time for True Blue. All right, so this week we have Ladara. And her question is, what were romantic scenes like with people you consider. Was it ever weird or awkward? Yes. I think it was awkward to kiss tc.
Kim Coles
Was it?
Erica Alexander
Yeah. Because we felt very much like brother and sister. And since we are born on the same day, we're very much aligned.
TC Carson
It was. It was weird. It was fun, too, though.
John Hinton
That's so fun. I need that face. That should be too much pressure. Oh, my gosh.
Erica Alexander
You know? Cause you'd be looking at me and your eyes be shining and wondering.
John Hinton
Acting.
Erica Alexander
Yes, you did.
TC Carson
You were.
Erica Alexander
But I didn't, you know, But I actually felt very. Well, no, I felt very. When you feel like somebody's looking at you and you're like, oh, gosh, I feel very shy. Like when he would look at me and be like, come here, baby. And I'd be like, oh, God, I don't want to be shy, and I want shy.
Kim Coles
And also for you, you hadn't been with lots and lots and lots of men.
Erica Alexander
Like it was r. I married the.
Kim Coles
Second man, you know, Richard, you married.
Erica Alexander
The second man I ever dated in tc.
Kim Coles
In tc.
John Hinton
Wow. I have now.
Kim Coles
You've had thousands since then.
John Hinton
Yeah.
Erica Alexander
In Hollywood.
Kim Coles
No, no, no, not at all.
Erica Alexander
What did you say?
Kim Coles
No, no, no. I'm laughing the opposite because she's always said, well, there's some stuff that she's been saying that's been like, you haven't. You're not.
Erica Alexander
I wish my pussy had gone on the road more. There's no doubt about it. You know, I would put it out there.
TC Carson
Living in Cleveland now, right? How long you been in Cleveland?
Kim Coles
He's still.
John Hinton
He's still.
Erica Alexander
I wish it had been more of an off road vehicle. It didn't have to stay in one lane all the time.
TC Carson
How about those Browns, huh?
Erica Alexander
What kind of self discipline that season I had it.
John Hinton
I think we got. We got every now and then we got Coach Primer for me.
TC Carson
Bring us back.
Kim Coles
It was quite a delight. I was a fan of John Hinton. I was so enamored of you as a performer. I watched you on the Tonight show that night. After that, you became a star. And when I heard that you were gonna be playing on this show and I was like, ooh, this is nice, you know, and because I was there early on, I knew that Yvette was gonna put the two of us together. I was very excited, very delighted, and certainly. Who wouldn't be attracted to you? So very attracted. I appreciated our scenes. We had been working together. And so I felt safe in your arms. So I enjoyed it.
Erica Alexander
She's such a star.
Kim Coles
Oh, gosh. Why does she go there?
Erica Alexander
It's true. The way you set it up.
Kim Coles
I'm sure we both have heard people talk about the sweetness of Overton and Sinclair and the romantic nature and that here was a man that wooed this woman and courted her, I think, to use your term. And so people really looked at that in a beautiful light. And someone said that if the two of them had been on another show, we would have been at least nominated for Emmys because you hadn't seen that in a black couple. And it was beautiful to play.
John Hinton
Remember the first time we kissed and all these. And I was high fiving people because the audience wanted this man, so we had to do it. And it was easy working with you because they got the mints right there. We take mints. And the breath. My breath is so fresh and so clean. Clean. Nobody dope as me. We Take it. We got the mints and. And everything. It was good. My accountant asked me, he said, oh, boy, is. Is Kim Cole a good kisser? And I said, cuz he could tell cuz we was kissing for real. And he said. He said, boy, it sure look like this. It sure look. And I was like, look here, man. And I was getting paid for that, too. I was on the clock to kiss.
Kim Coles
You and get paid for it was my delight.
John Hinton
Oh, that was. That. That was. It was fun. It was. It was like fresh breath and nice lips and look here. No, nothing awkward about this. I tell you what, look how when.
Erica Alexander
Y' all would break apart, you would all. You would walk away kind of drunk and Kim would smack her lips like. I mean, it was hilarious.
Kim Coles
As the characters or as ourselves?
John Hinton
Both. Both. Yeah. I have that effect on. You know, she put it on you like that, and then she would be like, you got to be ready for all of that. Because we were active. We was just professional.
Kim Coles
Professional.
John Hinton
We were so professional.
Kim Coles
It was on the page.
John Hinton
We expect a certain level of professionalism.
Kim Coles
Well done.
TC Carson
Profession, indeed.
Kim Coles
I kept it fresh.
Erica Alexander
In the puss.
Kim Coles
