Meet hairdresser and communications whizz Paul Watts who is oh-so-knowledgable on the business of YouTube. This is an excellent conversation with the host of Respectfully, Nicky Pope, who invites Paul to share his career story to date and particularly the past few years of growing his business in new ways. Nicky Pope with Paul Watts Today, whilst also running a salon column (he’s based in Northamptonshire, UK) and being a brand ambassador, Paul Watts is helping hairdressers to make new revenue from social media. He’s keen for us to understand that the platforms we use everyday can be more profitable. In Lockdown back in 2020/21, Paul embraced his inner Geek and explored more about how media and communications can support your hairdressing. From owning four salons pre-Covid, Paul now focusses on one salon, and works hard on YouTube to grow his business. He’s evangelical about how the monetising of your online presence can boost your opportunity and really bring new income. The business of YouTube Listen to Paul explaining how he’s started working more with social media – both the platforms he does like and use, and those he’s less keen on (and why). This is really practical conversation that will have you intrigued, for sure. At the time of writing, Paul has 190,000 YouTube subscribers and makes revenue from advertising. He’s passionate and very generous with his knowhow. You will really find this enthusiasm infectious. Feel free to message and follow Paul – he’s very open and super-happy to share what he knows. Award-winning Pembrokeshire-based salon owner Michelle Summers Davies from MD Hair in Goodwick recently collaborated with a local farmer to create a sustainable styling collection. Inspiration “At the start of this summer, I decided to take a wig-making course, and we were sent some materials and tasked with creating something unique using things like feathers,” Michelle explains. “I mentioned this to one of my clients, who owns a smallholding called Danclawdd Cottage here in Pembrokeshire with a flock of sheep that she keeps as pets. She jokingly asked, “Do you want to make a wig out of their wool?” and I thought, why not? She was surprised but offered me some, so I ethically sourced it from her sheep. Once I got it home, I had this mix of different textures and colours and wasn’t sure what to do with it. After attending the course and learning how to put everything together, I decided to give it a try. That’s how this unique wig came to life, crafted in my garage in Pembrokeshire. I brought it to the grand finale of the course, where I had a stunning black model to showcase it on. The leftover wool was even used as part of the styling, creating something truly different, unique, ethically sourced, and organic—all from Pembrokeshire! I call he collection the Llana Luxe Wig. Llana comes from the Welsh word for wool, and Luxe adds a touch of elegance – perfect for an ethically sourced, high-quality sheep wool wig!” Credits Hair: Michelle Summers Davies at MD Hair, Goodwick, Pembrokeshire • Photographer: James Nicklin The post Michelle Summer Davies collaborates with farmer appeared first on Respectyou.me | UK hairdressing news.

Phantom Towels has added a medium towel size to its collection. Best known for vanishing blemishes, disappearing stains, invisible spots – Phantom is a towel with unmatched performance, some may say supernatural powers! We’re starting to see where the name comes from now… Founder Jonathan De Francesco says “After being brought up in a family salon and 15 years as a hairdresser myself, I have spent many years wondering how I can improve the quality, durability, and usability of towels. Enter Phantom Towels, a revolutionary towel ready to make a difference in hairdressers’ day-to-day. After all, it’s the little everyday salon items that make the big difference to a happy salon life.” Why Phantom? Trick or Treat? It’s a treat every single time. Eco-conscience & Reducing Plastic Use: The oversized Phantom XL offers a luxurious feel for clients. More importantly, they entirely eliminate the need for single-use plastic capes. With super-towel powers they single-handedly reduce plastic waste in salons and at home, while still providing exceptional coverage and performance. Phantom “evidence tells us that towels that are reusable, and of a higher quality, make a preferable and more sustainable option than disposable towels” adds Jonathan De Francesco. Gentle on All Hair Textures: The sensory power of the towel is well understood. No matter the hair type, Phantom Towels have you oh-so-softly covered. The gentle microfibre material draws out water without damaging or adding friction to the hair. The perfect trio Available in three sizes – Phantom XL, Phantom Medium, and Baby Phantom – these towels are the perfect fit for everyone. Andrew Barton’s ABLE (Andrew Barton London Education) a VTCT endorsed education programme is delighted to announce a new partnership with Manchester City College, the largest further education college in the UK and the number one provider of 16-19 and adult education in Greater Manchester. The ABLE programme has been developed to support budding stylists and the hairdressing industry as it aims to tackle the current skills shortage and the challenge of attracting a younger workforce. ABLE (Andrew Barton London Education) is a unique two-year training programme designed exclusively for further education hairdressing college departments and delivered by acclaimed hairdresser Andrew Barton through a variety of exclusive training tools. Since its launch, ABLE has already qualified over 1000 hairdressing students in the UK. The partnership with ABLE began with a personal visit from Andrew, giving the college team, students, lecturers and local employers the opportunity to meet Andrew and delve into the opportunities and benefits a career in hairdressing can offer. At a time when the industry is seeing a decrease in the numbers of apprentices, ABLE is supporting colleges to expand their offering and position hairdressing as a rewarding career. Lecturers are ABLE to use the programme to enhance their teaching curriculum, which aligns perfectly with the advanced and creative hair professional apprentice standards and has three key aims: ABLE the qualifying student to be hairdressing salon ready. ABLE the qualifying student for employment within the hairdressing industry. ABLE the qualifying student for an aspirational career in hairdressing. Being part of the programme also allows access to a variety of unique training tools including bi-monthly video tutorials linked to the standards and qualifications at Level 2 and 3 all with the added benefit of Andrew’s much respected industry experience. The videos immerse students in all aspects of hairdressing and are complemented by a printed manual of salon principles to equip trainee stylists for salon life. Andrew has been a long-time champion of the salon-based hairdresser and cares passionately about the future careers of trainee hairdressers. The ABLE programme has been designed to allow Andrew to share his expertise, experience and passion with students across the UK. The scholarship is further supported with CPD for lecturers and visits by Andrew to the college. Andrew Barton, Founder of ABLE commented: “At ABLE we care passionately about supporting hairdressing colleges in their pursuit of training the future of British Hairdressing. We know that many of the icons and stars of the hairdressing industry started their journey to success being trained in a hairdressing college. My own career started as an apprentice in a village salon and was complemented by being trained in a local college and I’m ever grateful for that start. We are delighted to welcome The Manchester College hairdressing team to ABLE and look forward to the amazing work we will do together to enquire the hairdressing students with the tools they need to be successful and build a great hairdressing career.” Head of Department for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy at the Manchester College, Jacqui Taylor, added: “We are excited to partner with Andrew Barton and his ABLE programme to co-create a curriculum alongside an award-winning industry expert. This collaboration provides a unique opportunity for both our staff and students to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary for success in the industry. It marks a significant milestone in empowering our community to achieve excellence and remain at the forefront of a dynamic and ever-evolving sector.” For more of the latest industry news, click HERE. ________________________________ Respect is a hub for UK hairdressers of all ages and stages to find out what We Love, We Hear and We See as the best product launches, styling advice, hairtools, education training and seminars and hairshows! With the weather in the UK unfolding, we can confirm winter has arrived. With summer and autumn cut short, we are already seeing a lot of beautiful darker hues, new styles and clients transitioning to their new looks for the new season. Traditionally we look at darker tones this time of year, but winter 2024 it’s all about warmth, texture and statement additions to styles according to Darrel Starkey. Rich & Warm This year we are looking towards colours which give an essence of warmth whilst relating to the transitional winter season. Across the board, colour palettes traditionally deepen, and this will be the case again, with much more golden and rich tones added throughout to give that much need warmth! Our vivid reds transition to deep auburns, golden balayage’s blend into chestnut browns and bold apricots develop into golden coppers. Textured & Tousled Hair is kept simple with a little oomph, giving it a real sexy feel. Soft waves and undone curls will represent a beautiful yet undone relaxed style. Working with a large barrel tong, tong the hair and pin to cool. Once cool, brush out and leave hair with a beautiful, tousled feel. For additional texture, add a sea salt spray to give a little creative touch. Bangs are back! They are always loved, but bangs are back and here to stay, and I am so excited about this. Curtain bangs will be the top choice for clients, who want to add something a little bit more to their look, without a huge maintenance required. The curtains bangs can grow out naturally, blending into the side face framing panels.
