Welcome to Risk Never Sleeps, where we
meet and get to know the people delivering patient care and protecting patient safety. I'm your host, Ed Gaudet.
Welcome to the Risk Never Sleeps podcast in which we learn about the people that are on the front lines protecting patient safety and delivering patient care. I'm Ed Gaudet, the host of the program, and I am joined by my good friend and colleague, Josh Prince.
Josh Prince
Hello. Happy to be here.
Ed Gaudet
Josh. Welcome.
Josh Prince
Took you a while.
Ed Gaudet
Did you ever think this was going to happen?
Josh Prince
I've been waiting for the invite.
Ed Gaudet
Now, you were going to say something earlier and I cut you off. What were you going to say?
Josh Prince
I was going to say that I think. And now that I'm hearing my own voice through my headset. Maybe this is just a microphone thing, but you have your day to day advoice. Yes. And then your podcast ad voice.
Ed Gaudet
Oh, my podcast. Which do you prefer?
Josh Prince
You know, I think that the podcast ad voice would be my choice if I were lighting a candle and maybe reading. Really reading a book in the tub or a little sexy. Too much. Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Wow. Like Johnny Fly Trap. Cincinnati WKO or whatever. Sure. What was that? Okay, anyway. Flying turkeys. Nobody. Rko. Johnny Fever Venus Fly Trap. There we go. Okay, Josh, tell us a little bit about yourself, your role and your company.
Josh Prince
Sure. So I am chief technology officer and VP of Engineering here at Senseinet. Been in the healthcare industry for almost 20 years now. Yeah. Largely focused on technology, done consulting, then product. Prior to Sensenet was with a population health analytics company leading their application development and for the last almost eight years, been here at Senseinet.
Ed Gaudet
Eight years.
Josh Prince
Doing the dang thing. Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
What do you love about Sensenet?
Josh Prince
As a product or as a.
Ed Gaudet
Whatever you want. However you want to take the question.
Josh Prince
I would say we are an organization that gives individuals a lot of autonomy, challenges everyone in whatever role they may be in, and allows them to grow in a variety of ways, stretch ourselves and their abilities. And I like to think we punch a little bit above our weight. And that's something I appreciate about this team. Everyone's very dedicated and focused on the mission.
Ed Gaudet
How about for customers?
Josh Prince
You know, I just think we are. And not to toot your horn a little bit too much here, but I think we've always been customer focused. Maniacally focused, as I think I've heard you say a thousand times. Right. And that shows in the feedback we get from our customers and the value that they are getting from our product. Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
If you weren't doing this job, what would you be doing. What are you most passionate about? I know you have a growing family, but assume your kids are out and you can do anything you want to do.
Josh Prince
I love startups. I love problem solving. I love talking to users, customers, understanding their needs and trying to figure out creative solutions to those problems. I enjoy the challenge of the dynamism of technology and industry and trying to figure out what the right answer is not just today, but also for tomorrow, which oftentimes is not going to be the right answer from yesterday.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah, right.
Josh Prince
So I think I'd still be working in a startup world. As for what exactly, I don't know. You know, there's a lot of things that sort of come and go as interests of mine, but I haven't yet found that thing where I said, you know what, that's the thing that I'd love to spend the next 10 years doing.
Ed Gaudet
What are some of your hobbies? Oh, man.
Josh Prince
You know, I'm actually about, I guess technically it's not a hobby yet. I'm about to pull the trigger on an espresso machine. From everything I've heard, that's a hobby for me. Everyone says if you ask the question, should I buy an espresso machine? The answer is, do you want a new hobby? So that's likely going to be where you're getting, I think. Does it be with a D? No.
Ed Gaudet
What's the D?
Josh Prince
I think a profitech move.
Ed Gaudet
Oh.
Josh Prince
Is where I've landed.
Ed Gaudet
Damn.
Josh Prince
Yeah, I've done a lot of research.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah, I know you, I know you
Josh Prince
probably do a lot. You know my style.
Ed Gaudet
What was it about that machine?
Josh Prince
Honestly, it was like, as far as a dual boiler system goes, we're going to geek out on some.
Ed Gaudet
Yes.
Josh Prince
One of the fuller featured ones at a, I would say, palatable price point.
Ed Gaudet
Oh, okay.
Josh Prince
Yeah. So you can get. You can get, obviously. Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
You'd spend 10, 20 grand on an espresso machine. Yeah. I don't think you're spending that.
Josh Prince
No, no, no, trust me, I'd be in big trouble.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah, well, I want to learn more about this machine afterwards. If you could go back in time and tell your 20 year old self something, what would it be?
Josh Prince
Great question. I mean, honestly, I'd probably say go do a startup sooner. I started startups at about 30 years old, I want to say.
Ed Gaudet
Okay.
Josh Prince
As you can probably infer from my answer, it's been a tremendous experience. I think there's nowhere you're going to get as much exposure to the types of things that you ultimately will when Working for a startup, the only thing, I guess, regret about is that I didn't start it sooner. Sooner.
Ed Gaudet
What were some of the initial surprises for you? You move from a larger organization to a startup.
Josh Prince
You know, I think it's all about resources and leverage. Right. If you're with an arch organization, you get accustomed to having bigger teams, more dedicated functions. And I don't even mean this in a negative way, but there's a little bit more of the, well, that's not my job type of mentality. Right. You've got individuals who are responsible for those different domains and you say sort of in your own lane. Whereas at a startup it's sort of, I don't even want to say expected. It's necessary to really be able to work a little bit more laterally and handle a number of things. Wear a lot of hats, so to speak.
Ed Gaudet
What's the riskiest thing you've ever done?
Josh Prince
Oh, my goodness. Probably. I guess a lot of people are probably guilty of this, so maybe I shouldn't be embarrassed, but driving a car way too fast at 16, 17 years old.
Ed Gaudet
How fast?
Josh Prince
Too fast. How fast?
Ed Gaudet
160.
Josh Prince
I. No, no, no. But let's just say I pushed my Mercury stable about as far as one can push it.
Ed Gaudet
I had a Mercury Monarch. Oh, yeah. They can go fast.
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
140. You get that to 140.
Josh Prince
I didn't quite get there, but it was okay.
Ed Gaudet
Well, that's not fast and everything. 140. Was it shaking?
Josh Prince
Oh, yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Okay. All right. Yeah, yeah. Whenever a car starts to shake, it's probably unsafe.
Josh Prince
Yeah, yeah. It's one of those things I look back at now, I'm like, what an idiot.
Ed Gaudet
I don't think anyone's actually said that on this program. Not driven a car too fast. Yeah. Not a Mercury seat. What color was that thing?
Josh Prince
Maroon.
Ed Gaudet
Oh, yeah. Oh, man. Yep.
Josh Prince
I think I picked this thing up for three, six hundred dollars, something like that.
Ed Gaudet
Do you have a tape tech in it? Yeah, Pioneer tape deck.
Josh Prince
Had the power. Leather seats.
Ed Gaudet
Whoa. Yeah, yeah. Nice.
Josh Prince
It was.
Ed Gaudet
What do you drive now?
Josh Prince
A Tesla Model 3. Little different. Of course you do. A little different.
Ed Gaudet
We had an interesting night last night. Do you remember where we went to dinner?
Josh Prince
Chubby cattle. I think if I can. If the meat sweats haven't, you know, wiped my memory.
Ed Gaudet
How did you do last night and this morning?
Josh Prince
I woke up. I've never been so full. Full waking up in the morning.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah.
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
It was pretty incredible, huh?
Josh Prince
Within a couple of hours, I was like, ravenous. Yeah. I don't know.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah, that's what Paul has said to starving. But what an experience, huh?
Josh Prince
It was different. It's different. I. I can't say I ever imagine washing down a 5 wagyu with a slurpee.
Ed Gaudet
With a Slushy. Yeah, like, that was great. Passion fruit slushy. It was insane. I also think the best part of that trip was that it was only a mile away and it took us like almost an hour to get there.
Josh Prince
Funny how that works, I guess. Everything in Los Angeles and the Uber was.
Ed Gaudet
The Uber driver was a little angry about the wayo.
Josh Prince
Did you notice that? Yeah, Wouldn't you be?
Ed Gaudet
Yeah, I think he wanted to burn one down at one point, like he was. And then when we went outside after and we saw a Wayo. Do you remember that?
Josh Prince
We did, yeah.
Ed Gaudet
What was that all about? That was weird.
Josh Prince
And then it tried to drive away without its passenger.
Ed Gaudet
After the guy said, I'm standing here waiting to unlock it, waiting for a friend. And then it just started moving away from me. He didn't know what's going.
Josh Prince
He was unfazed. And he was still just lecturing us about why we shouldn't take Uber.
Ed Gaudet
That's right, why.
Josh Prince
Waymo was so much better as his car drove off.
Ed Gaudet
Drove away. It was insane. Okay. You're on a desert island. You could bring five records with you. What would they be?
Josh Prince
Ed, you know I'm not a music guy.
Ed Gaudet
I know, but you like some music, right?
Josh Prince
Yeah, but I'm the type. Like, I'll put on, like, a vibe and it just plays like. You know when you get the Spotify wrapped at the end of the year and it says, you listen to this. I don't even know who the bands are. I'm like, who? I listen to them for many hours. I've never even heard of this band.
Ed Gaudet
Really?
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
That's weird. Maybe even hacked.
Josh Prince
No, it's just because I put on the station. It just plays through.
Ed Gaudet
All right. Movies, movies, movies. Five movies. You gotta be either a movie or a music guy.
Josh Prince
You can't. I can do movies. Okay. I still wouldn't say I'm a movie guy, but I can do movies, so I'd probably. I have a bias towards, like, Scorsese and Tarantino.
Ed Gaudet
Probably, yeah.
Josh Prince
Nice. As a general rule among their work, I'm probably going to go with Pulp Fiction. I think it's hard not to include in that list.
Ed Gaudet
That's a good one. Probably Dust of Dawn.
Josh Prince
I am not a fan. It wasn't known. Just don't get me wrong, actually, I guess.
Ed Gaudet
Is it George Clooney?
Josh Prince
It was just. It caught me so off guard, which despite the fact that that was my voice and it was how old? I still. It hadn't been spoiled for me.
Ed Gaudet
It was so the point, though, wasn't it?
Josh Prince
Yeah, but I was a little. It caught me a little off guard.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah.
Josh Prince
I don't know.
Ed Gaudet
So did you see Sinners?
Josh Prince
I loved Sinners. You did? I did.
Ed Gaudet
So tell me about.
Josh Prince
Because it's music and it's the same critique I just had for. From Dustel. Dawn took you off. Sorry, I don't want to spoil it for anybody, but there's a similar twist where it was not quite what.
Ed Gaudet
I wouldn't worry about spoiling it, but anyway.
Josh Prince
No, I love that movie, actually. I thought it was brilliant, maybe. Yeah. Best movie I've seen in years, I would say.
Ed Gaudet
Really?
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Wow.
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Did you see Long Legs? I know.
Josh Prince
I still haven't.
Ed Gaudet
Oh, my.
Josh Prince
Still having. I know. Hitting me.
Ed Gaudet
Black Phone.
Josh Prince
No, I don't.
Ed Gaudet
Oh, Black Phone. Even Black Phone, too, I thought was pretty.
Josh Prince
Is that horror, too?
Ed Gaudet
It's horror, yeah.
Josh Prince
Generally not super into horror. Yeah, but.
Ed Gaudet
But more psychological.
Josh Prince
That is a little more up my alley, I would say, than.
Ed Gaudet
Well, Sinners is kind of horror, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Josh Prince
But again, I. I think I didn't understand that. I was going into it.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah.
Josh Prince
Yeah, I enjoyed it.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah. F1.
Josh Prince
No, but like, every flight I've taken in the last month, it's been there, so I should watch it. It's.
Ed Gaudet
I've watched it twice.
Josh Prince
I nearly did it. It's so good times. Actually, on the last one. Speaking of Tarantino, I rewatched Once Upon a Time in Holly on a flight. I did. Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
I guess. You have enough time. Yeah, I've seen that four times.
Josh Prince
Favorite, though.
Ed Gaudet
What?
Josh Prince
Not one of my favorites.
Ed Gaudet
Love that movie.
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Oh, what a great movie.
Josh Prince
It's a good movie. It's fun. I honestly, I had forgotten the ending, which. So it was kind of enjoyable.
Ed Gaudet
How could you forget?
Josh Prince
I hadn't seen it since it came out. Okay. You know, and so anyway, it was kind of fun reliving that.
Ed Gaudet
That's really odd.
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
That's the whole point of the movie.
Josh Prince
Is it? I don't know.
Ed Gaudet
Who are you, Josh Prince? Oh, my God. I'm not even sure what question to ask him next. I'm speechless. All right. Biggest lesson in your life. Biggest lesson? Yeah.
Josh Prince
Life. This is the first thing that comes to mind, I suppose. But I would say in my Life, the experiences I've had where I've sort of learned the most, grown the most, et cetera. It's always been a situation where I've been surrounded by just like the smartest, most motivated individuals. Collection of those folks, I guess, that you're going to find anywhere. And so I guess that lesson to sort of synthesize would be don't get too hung up on sort of the name brand or like, you know, I got to go to the best college or I have to work for the biggest company or the best company, et cetera. Look instead for the people who you think are challenged, are interested in the same challenges as you're interested in and are trying to grow in the ways that you're interested in growing in. And I think you'll get a lot more out of those experiences than some of the others.
Ed Gaudet
Nice wise for your age, Josh.
Josh Prince
I'm not getting any younger, so I don't know. Hopefully gotta learn some lessons along the way.
Ed Gaudet
One interesting fact about you that most people don't know.
Josh Prince
Not that interesting.
Ed Gaudet
You're not that open either. So I'm sure you got a lot of interesting things about you.
Josh Prince
Interesting fact. I played competitive paintball.
Ed Gaudet
There you go. Look at that.
Josh Prince
Into college.
Ed Gaudet
There it is.
Josh Prince
Boom. I don't know. That's a rant.
Ed Gaudet
I didn't know that.
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Competitive paintball.
Josh Prince
Yeah. Started the team. The. The club.
Ed Gaudet
Fbu the club too.
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
No club prior to you starting it?
Josh Prince
Not that I know of. It certainly wasn't in existence at that time. Crazy.
Ed Gaudet
So tell me about competitive paintball. What's that like?
Josh Prince
So there's. I've been out of the game for a while and I'm sure things have changed. But at the time, most people who think about paintball thought about like people with camouflage faces, like rolling around in the woods. Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Which I've done that, by the way.
Josh Prince
This is a different sort of version of the game called speedball. It's relatively small field, inflatable sort of obstacles and things of that nature that people are sort of strategically positioned on. And a lot of coordination, a lot of teamwork. Calling out movement of your opponent and your own movement and sort of coordinating positions accordingly.
Ed Gaudet
Tactical fighting.
Josh Prince
Yeah. Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Nice. Interesting, huh? Is there still a capture of the flag type of.
Josh Prince
There is an element of that, yeah.
Ed Gaudet
Okay.
Josh Prince
Yep.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah. Ever been hit in the face by a pit bull?
Josh Prince
Not directly in the face. You wear a mask.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah.
Josh Prince
So it's gotten, you know, behind the mask, it hurts types of thing before. Yep.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah.
Josh Prince
Draw some blood Every now and then.
Ed Gaudet
Ever fall on a rock, Exposed rock, cut your knee?
Josh Prince
Yeah. Am I hearing a little bit about your. Your paintball experience, maybe?
Ed Gaudet
Yeah. I was in the military, and I think paintball was worse. You get a lot. You get a lot of people out there that want to be in the military and all of a sudden have a gun and they turn into psych lunatics out there.
Josh Prince
Absolutely.
Ed Gaudet
What advice would you give to someone coming out of school that wants to become head of engineering, cto, do their own startup? What?
Josh Prince
Would you stay curious? I think you know, all these things, especially in the technology field, is it evolves so fast.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah.
Josh Prince
The best thing I think you can do is just keep up with all the things that are happening and try to experiment with as much of it as possible.
Ed Gaudet
Nice, Josh. Pleasure having you on.
Josh Prince
Thank you.
Ed Gaudet
It's painless, right?
Josh Prince
Yeah, mostly.
Ed Gaudet
What's the painful part?
Josh Prince
I should have known you're going to throw a music question at me, and even the movie pivot I was unprepared for, so.
Ed Gaudet
Really? Yeah.
Josh Prince
Yeah.
Ed Gaudet
These are things that we do as humans. Like I said.
Josh Prince
Like I said, too. I should have known that.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah.
Josh Prince
One of those.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah. All right. Well, it's pretty painless, though.
Josh Prince
Yeah. All things considered.
Ed Gaudet
But good time at Vibe. You've had a good couple days.
Josh Prince
Yeah, it's been interesting walking the floor.
Ed Gaudet
Any learnings you want to share?
Josh Prince
I mean, I would say just anecdotally, I think I saw one booth that didn't mention AI. What were they?
Ed Gaudet
Hand sanitizer.
Josh Prince
They probably just hadn't updated it in a couple of years. And they do have AI powered hand sanitizer, after all. They do. Yeah. So definitely been cool to kind of walk around and just see the interesting things people are.
Ed Gaudet
Yeah. Yeah. Ed Gaudette from the Risk Never Sleeps podcast. If you're on the front lines protecting patient safety and delivering patient care, remember to stay vigilant because Risk never sleeps.
Josh Prince
