Memphis Bleak
Yeah, y', all, you already know what it is. Yours truly back with another exclusive rock solid podcast here with a legend, legendary dj, personal friend of mine, somebody who played a pivotal part in my life, you know, when I first got on. It's one of the first DJs I ever met in my life. I want y' all to help me welcome my brother, DJ Chubby Chub, but we call him DJ Diesel these days, you know what I mean? What's up? Bleak is what up, my brother? Yo, listen, they might not know, but I want them to know. I met this guy back in Original Flavor days. He was Original Flavors dj. Dame Dash was the manager, and Jay was just a featured artist on one of the bangers they dropped.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
First banger.
Memphis Bleak
Word up, man. Like, take us back then. Like, how you even get started? Like, what. What was the inspiration even jump into the DJ world?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I mean, DJing was, you know, something I came up with to seeing in the Bronx. It was like being in the Bronx, it was something that I wanted to see. And then being in the era that I was at, you know, I got to see, like, hear the music of Cold Crush, live outside park jams and things like that. And, you know, being Puerto Rican, it was kind of tough because I grew up in a home. It was all Spanish, so I didn't really get the understanding of the hip hop.
Memphis Bleak
Damn. I ain't know you was Puerto Rican, my G. No wonder when I go out there, they be looking at me like, k, low K. Like, yo, oh, all right. They think I'm down. I'm down now.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah. 100% Puerto Rican.
Memphis Bleak
Damn. That's what's up. I ain't know that. See, you learn something every day on Rock Solid.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
So the influence of, you know, hearing the music is what grasped me, like hearing breakbeats and seeing the actual DJs DJing. And then from there, I started picking it up.
Memphis Bleak
That's what's up.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
You know, I got to meet Clark.
Memphis Bleak
Rest in peace, Clark. Legend. Legend.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Clark is forever my brother. Someone that inspired me, someone that showed me so much to understanding. And then, you know, Kid Capri and the Brucie B's. Yep, yep. You know what I mean? But Clark was the first person to ever put me under his wing with. I opened up for him, and he gave me. At that time, he was getting like 10, 15,000 a party.
Memphis Bleak
Damn. And back then was that shit. That's like getting 30, 40 today.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Word. Clark used to get 10, 15, and he used to give me 1500 just to open up.
Memphis Bleak
Damn, that's nice. That's nice. Yo, so did that. So the connection with Clark, how did that happen between Jay? Did that come from y'?
Target Advertiser
All?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It's Clark.
Memphis Bleak
Oh, shit. So you Bridge. So let me get this clear. I'm trying to. Let's be all the way clear. So Jay met Clark through you.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Nah, Clark knew Jay.
Memphis Bleak
Oh, all right.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I met Jay through Clock.
Memphis Bleak
So Clock was fucking with y'. All, and. Damn, Clock was the. He was the glue.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
But he had Jay, like, he would tell you, like, I got a boy in Brooklyn. Like, he would always say that, right? And I used to be like, all right, when we gonna hear the music? Yeah, when we gonna hear, Bro, he just unloaded mad demos.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And he had. Jay had mad music. And we was. I was just like, yo, let me get them joints.
Memphis Bleak
That's right. That's right.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And I. I'm the first person ever played Jay's joints on mixtape.
Memphis Bleak
I was just about to say that, man. He was the first mixtape that Jay had a feature on. Like, how was the studio session for that original Flavor record?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Can I single was dope because it was in Powerhouse.
Target Advertiser
Yeah.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And, you know, that's when the reels was.
Memphis Bleak
I tried to tell them you had to know your verse was no going back punching in.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And even, like, the first time I went to the session when I met Dame, that's when I met. You know, because. All right, so I'm gonna tell you about the original flavor. Right. So Tone is from my block in the Bronx.
Memphis Bleak
Yes.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Ski was in Greensboro, but he lived in the Bronx.
Memphis Bleak
Okay.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
But he used to stay at Clark house, too.
Memphis Bleak
Yes, yes, I remember that.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
So Tone was like, yo, we. We about to do this album, and we gonna do original put original flavor. Because they got rid of the other cat that they had the first album. Original Flavor. Was the kid Suave.
Memphis Bleak
Yup. It wasn't Tone, right? Yes, you right. Damn. That's right.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It became a new original Flavor. Yes. So Tone put me down. But it so happens I already knew Clark. And then Clark got us the deal, too, at Atlantic. Oh, okay. Damn. Moving. So. And then Future forgot these guys. Future Sound, I think they. They was down with us too. Dame's cousin was managing them. Future Sense of Bob Step.
Memphis Bleak
Damn. I don't remember them.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, it was a whole Dash. Like, Darien Dash.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah, I remember that. Yeah. They had the Dash Entertainment or something, right? Yep.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
So. And then. So Clark had got a sign to Atlantic, and then Clark was like, yeah, do that. And then I said, all right. And then in that same time, we did Can I Get Open? And Jay was recording. I can't get with that.
Lauren LaRosa
Mm.
Memphis Bleak
I can't get with that. I gotta keep it thick. I remember shooting that video in Marcy.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, I was there.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah, he shot it during Marcy day.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
He was a heavier person at that time.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, people don't even know you was the first DJ on the road with us.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
For Jay, I was first person on the road.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah. DJing for us, playing all those records. Cannot get open. Fucking. I can't get with that in my lifetime. One and the remix. Yep. Yo, like, people think. And that's why I'm glad you here, bro. Because you were really part of the beginning, the struggle.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Absolutely.
Memphis Bleak
The denial days when they was like, nah, y' all not them niggas.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I was a believer from the beginning when I heard Jay. And then, like, in that instant, I met Sauce and Jazz, man, and they was known as the Hard Pack.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, I always. That, to me, is the biggest what if in hip hop.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
To me.
Memphis Bleak
Because as a kid from Marcy, looking at all three of them, knowing them and knowing how deadly they were.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Nah, they were spitting.
Memphis Bleak
Like, I always. It's the what if. Like, what if they really put it down together and stayed together and made it happen.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Because, bro, I had loved the chemistry, definitely, between Jay and Sauce. What? So they got this joint. I got the demo. It's called Get Off My Dick.
Memphis Bleak
I remember that. I remember that joint. Yo, you got classics right now.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Joints.
Memphis Bleak
I remember that joint.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And then, like, you know, to hit them two together, and they was going back and forth, and it was just bar for ball. But sarcasm was through the roof, and
Memphis Bleak
Sauce was the king of it. He knew how to disrespect you. He was on that type of timing. Like, that's one thing I wish Source would have got his respect. And he's just doing the game. Cause he one of the top spitters.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Like, nah. He definitely had wordplay. That was with mad sarcasm. And then with Jay's coolness of sarcasm, it was just like. That contrast was crazy. Like when you heard Pregame or you heard Wanted Dead or Alive. You see what I'm saying? There's so many songs that you'll be like, yo, what the fuck?
Memphis Bleak
Them niggas was on some shit. So, like, even back then, before I came, I remember, like, you These the Chris John days. They had some girl named Roughness, right?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Roughness. They had the girl Michelle that was singing.
Memphis Bleak
I never met her.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, Michelle sang on our song called you think you all that?
Memphis Bleak
No way. Oh, that's her on there. Like, that's what I mean, bro. People don't understand. Y' all was doing this shit out y' all pocket. Like, no. Was no label budget, was no head label rep. They was literally records in the trunk, filling both Lexes up. And we hit the road and moved back.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
We was in the Pathfinder before that.
Memphis Bleak
Yep, it was the Pathfinder. You right? Before the Lexuses, Jay had an act.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
He had the Red Hack.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, yo, chill, yo, chill. I forgot about the Red act. Before the GS, then they had the Champagne act, the two door joint. They remember Tata had the fucking. What the fuck was that car? Tata had the Q45, the Infinity. Yo. Niggas was on some shit. Them boys was moving back there with that shit. Like. So how was, like, what you think happened between the original flavor thing that didn't have them go as far as you think they should have?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Cause I just feel that they was ahead of their time for. At the time that they was doing it, I think they was really ahead of their time.
Cabenuva Advertiser
Mm.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Like. Cause Tone and Ski had. They both were different type rappers and they just was. They just can flow. They. They. They wrote rhymes that was dope. Like, even like on a song that we have on our album, it's called Many Styles.
Memphis Bleak
That's my shit, Manny Styles.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And they had the kid Fresco. Remember Fresco used to rap, so. And then Jay had the Ellis line on there to join weight. Remember? He was like. It's like picks, pics. Remember on TV used to come home after 3 o' clock and it was pics. That record is crazy. Off that album, on that album. But there's a lot of joints on that album that were dope. Even, like, we had skits. The cold. Like the making of that album was. Was all real hip hop.
Memphis Bleak
That's a fact.
Lauren LaRosa
Hey, y', all, what's up? It's Lauren LaRosa. And we gotta talk. We gotta get into something. That Sprite just dropped, because this is right up my alley. As somebody who's been in audio and hip hop culture for over a decade, this is exactly the kind of thing I geek out about, okay? It's called the Sprite Living track list. Fifty tracks, handpicked, that shaped hip hop from the ground up to right now. And this isn't just a playlist to Bob Your head to all cute. This is designed to start real conversation to get people arguing. Y' all know how y' all love to do about the hip hop and the list reminiscing as well. Sending it to their group chats like, yo, do y' all remember when this song was it? And honestly, as a producer of content campaigns like this hit different for me. I spent my life thinking about how the perfect story gets told. How one moment in a song is becomes a moment for the culture. And seeing 50 records that literally define eras of hip hop laid out like this, side by side. Yo, Masterclass. Mwah. Chef Kiss. Now this list itself, it's incredible. You've got the foundational stuff sitting right next to the new class. Real then and now vibes. My personal top picks from the pack. I gotta go with Unity, Bodak, Yellow, and who's that Girl Child. You can't tell me nothing about that song because those are just non negotiables for me. But here's the best part. This goes way beyond the kin. Hip hop authorities and tastemakers actually break down the history and the impact behind every single track on the list. The samples, the influence, why it mattered then and why it still matters right now. That's the real story. So go run your own list. See how many of these 50 you grew up on, which ones surprise you, and which ones you're sending to your friends. First, check out the full Sprite Living Track List and break down the stories behind your favorite bars@livingtracklist. Genius.com this is the Sprite Living Track List. Obey your thirst.

How was the connection with Dame? Because Dame is a dame today. I want people to get a real understanding. Dame today is not Dame of then.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
No Dame back then was very straightforward,
Memphis Bleak
right to it business all day.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Straightforward to it like it was. Listen, the first time I met Dame, right, we was in the studio, we was doing we was just doing. Ski was just doing the beat to Can I Get Open?
Memphis Bleak
Mm.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And that was the first time I met Dane. I was already in the studio. We was already been working. We ain't never meet Dane. I ain't never meet Dane. I was wearing all red.
Memphis Bleak
I know. He went crazy.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yo, B, when I tell you I was wearing all red cross color, it's like, this y' all dj. And he said, he's like, this your dj. He was like, nigga look like Santa Claus.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, chill, yo. Straight out the gate.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Like he was just cutting.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah, I'm telling you, that's. I ain't even know.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Like, I didn't even. I ain't even know the nigga like that. He was just going, right? And then he was like, yo, he looked like a red tomato, yo. Then he was. Then he was like, nah. He said, yo, only colors you gonna wear is blue and black.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, chill.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
That was it. After that, all wardrobe was blue and black, yo.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah, Dane was a bastard for that. Cause I never forgive me. Wearing the white army fatigue suit. Him, Jay and fucking Biggs cut me. What are you, the nurse for the army? What's wrong with you? You out here looking like the snowman for the army.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Oh, man.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, these niggas cut me.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Nah, they would cut you up.
Memphis Bleak
You couldn't wear around them, dude.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And on top of that, we was wearing Tim's without the double sole.
Memphis Bleak
Oh, yeah, that was the. Yeah, them generic vim joints. That was the vims joints.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Those was the shits we was buying off of Padm.
Memphis Bleak
That's a fact. That was them vims joints. But I remember one day coming uptown when the Vasquez boots first came out. Oh, yeah, and I remember y' all all went in the store. You J, Dane, Ski. Ski wasn't even there. It was just you, Jay, dang the Tone. And y' all niggas bought all of them, every color.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
The dolomite joints.
Memphis Bleak
Dolomite joints. I remember being a shorty. Like, I can't wait to get my bag. Imma be doing shit just like that. Like that.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
That was a time, B. And then, you know, after that, niggas used to eat Wendy's.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, yo, you ain't lying. That's the thing. Old boys FL flowers. Now, I'll be telling. Take it back to the project store. We don't eat flowers, yo, going to dinner with them, you feel like you ain't eat. They don't eat what we eat no more. Like, I remember Hov ordered some pizza. We Was doing a studio session. I've. We had like a rehearsal and he ordered some pizza. So, you know, like, you thinking they gonna order pizza for the dogs. It'd be like four or five pies. Yo, bro, it was like 30 boxes. So I'm like, why this nigga order all this pizza? Like, what the fuck is in these? I opened the box, my nigga, that shit was like a napkin pizza. That's how thin the pizza was. Like, I literally rolled the shit up, took two of them. This why he ordered 30. You need a whole one dolo. Word. Like, yo, it was bad.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
They were light.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, they don't play. They on they shit. So speak to the people about the transformation. Because what you did, my G, going from DJ Chubby Chub, the DJ Diesel, I choke you with one hand now. That's like, did you. Did you document your journey?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Nah. You know what happened? I didn't even plan it.
Memphis Bleak
No way.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It was so happened. Was pre pandemic. And I was on Twitch. And I used to. When we ain't had no work, we had. All I did was do Twitch. And in that instant, I was on Twitch six days a week for like five, six hours. But I had to entertain the people. Yes. Right. So I had to. Visually, they watching you. So you're trying to get people to stay there, right?
Memphis Bleak
Yeah.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
To be, you know, in tune to you. Yes. The more I was doing that, I was losing weight.
Memphis Bleak
That's crazy, right?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
So. And then I said I was wearing like a 5x hoodie, and the hoodie was super big. And I was like, yo, this joint is big. So I went in cha. I was wearing champion. You know, Champion run big. That's right. So I went and got a 3X. I was like, it still fits. It still fit a little big, but I felt way better. So. And then I said, you know what? The next day I went and got a trainer.
Memphis Bleak
Oh, shit.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
The next day I got a trainer.
Memphis Bleak
And that was it.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It's been five years. June 9th just made five years that I've been consistent. I went from £400 to £230.
Memphis Bleak
Damn. God bless my G. That's amazing.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Just all work.
Memphis Bleak
That's what I'm saying. Like, and you ain't like, that's inspiration. I hope you documented it through the gram. Cause I see you every day in the gym, putting in work. And that's why I'm like, somebody out there needs that inspiration. Because you did it just with a trainer. You didn't go get no operations.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And you Ain't got operations surgery, you ain't got to do. You ain't gotta do the GLP1s. You ain't gotta do Ozempic. You put in the work, you'll get the results.
Memphis Bleak
That's right. And that's exactly.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I lost mad weight. I don't got no loose skin on my body. That's what I'm talking about. And I'm 56 years old.
Memphis Bleak
God bless my G. Look at that. 56. Still out here pushing. Looking healthier than us. All of us. Cause I know I ain't shit. Little flabby down there, Cuff. I gotta get that trainer.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, like, so that's what happened. I ended up getting a trainer. The young. The kid was 27 at the time, Columbia, and he just pushed me. That's what's now I got. So now my next thing is, where I'm cutting now is to step on a different stage on bodybuilding stage next year.
Memphis Bleak
Oh, you want to compete?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, I'm going to compete. 50 and older, you ain't fudgeing around. Yeah, I'm going. I'm going to go for it. Like, my trainers is like, you got to try.
Memphis Bleak
I don't fuck it. Why not, right?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I mean, you know, it's a plan.
Memphis Bleak
That's right, man.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Like, see how we do do this this winter and how everything cuts out and then we'll see what that. What that June look like next year.
Memphis Bleak
Exactly. Now that's dope. So, yeah, man, you stepping in the competition on that. Like, what's your take on hip hop today? Like, what do you think about him? From. From the golden era. We came up in to where it's at today.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It's never gonna be the same. It's always gonna be different. And then it's more. It's more for the youth.
Memphis Bleak
Yes.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It's not about what you came up on. It's not what I came up on. Facts. It's not. It's gonna. It's gonna transcend to what these kids like. Just like, they don't gravitate to whatever drops Friday until Monday. Then from Monday they on to somebody else. Because nobody's really sticking. No saying. There's nobody that's really giving you music that last longer than the weekend.
Memphis Bleak
I think because. Do you think. I think because it's no movement, it's nothing to associate yourself with. Like, be like, I'm a part of this. Yeah. Like, back then, like, you know, you knew you had your cash money riders, you had your Rough Riders, you had your murder Inc. You had your G Unit, your Rockefeller representatives. Like, even back in the day, you had people that represent Kane and people that represented Rakim. It wasn't just all one. Today is just a melting pot of fans and they just digest everything.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Cause everything goes through streaming and YouTube. Yep.
Memphis Bleak
You know what I mean?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
So they don't have a. They can scroll and find somebody today that's good for the weekend and then they'll come back and scroll another day and find somebody else.
Memphis Bleak
And find somebody else. That's a fact.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And they'll move on to that.
Memphis Bleak
What you feel about the dj? I feel like me in my aspect. I think the DJ has became bigger than the artist.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
A lot of DJs have.
Memphis Bleak
Yes.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I feel a lot of DJs definitely have bigger brands and, and bigger reasons to do things. But I feel also when it comes to radio, you're handcuffed. You know what I mean?
Memphis Bleak
Fact.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Like you're not able to say, I got a new artist and I can just break this. Yes. You know what I mean? Like at the time when I was doing like new radio, I was able to break all this.
Memphis Bleak
Today you handcuffed.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I don't get that. Like that.
Memphis Bleak
Nope.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Not even on able to say I could break this artist and do that.
Memphis Bleak
And not even on Sirius. Like them DJs is even handcuffed now. I remember when Sirius played everything. Now it sound like it's just becoming the same thing that, you know, they get.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
They get a little leeway on certain states. On shade four or five, they definitely get more leeway. But, you know, it's. It's tough. And. And also DJs. The things that I really don't like is that DJs don't even take chances in club. No more.
Memphis Bleak
Talk about it. Club scene was that shit.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
All right, let's say we don't all do radio. Let's say we don't all have the opportunity. I feel that a DJ could still break an artist in the club, in
Memphis Bleak
the club, on the street. That's a fact.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
You ain't handcuffing the club, leaving the artist. You could still play that artist.
Memphis Bleak
That's right.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It's your call to make that artist hot. Yep.
Memphis Bleak
That's a fact.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And I know I can still do that.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah, man, that's crazy. Now that you put it that way, I never thought about it that way. But yeah, like DJs that go from the radio and still wear the handcuffs to the club is insane.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Like, I broke a lot of artists. Like I'm just Saying, I came from New York to go to Boston to do radio.
Memphis Bleak
I remember you was doing radio in Boston. Word. That's what G spinning was out there.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I was breaking mad artists. Yeah. Hell yeah, mad artists. And. And. And I didn't have a problem playing songs that I knew that I believed in. And I just feel Cats don't have that no more.
Memphis Bleak
Nope.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And that's why I feel confident on certain records.
Memphis Bleak
And that's why I think a lot of DJs pivoted to EDM is them bags that they getting. Them EDM DJs just don't make no sense. These niggas is getting football contract numbers. What's my man named? Danger Mouse. I'm about to put on a helmet, too. Like, I'm about to put on a mass and hit the road and be like it. Push the button, let's go. Because these doing150,000 festivals and getting 200 my G to spin for an hour. Two hours. A rapper ain't never getting unless you hold Drake. I don't think Snoop getting 200. I love Snoop. Snoop might be getting a buck. A buck fifty. 200 might only be Beyonce. Jay. Snoop getting 200. See, put some respect on Snoop. They said Snoop getting 200. Snoop, I owe you an ounce for that. My bad up. I owe you a zip.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I'm telling you, Cast, that could still. That the cats.
Memphis Bleak
That.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
That still makes sense. Luda, Luda, 50 Cent, 50.
Memphis Bleak
Kendrick, Drake, Cole.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Nah, not worldwide, though.
Memphis Bleak
You don't think they ain't worldwide?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Not in certain place. I'm telling you what I've noticed, and I'm telling you, Luda, Snoop, 50 Cent, M, if he decided to go, come outside.
Memphis Bleak
Yep.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
If he decided to come up, you know what I mean?
Memphis Bleak
M could go to the moon, sell out artists.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
That is definitely going into countries.
Memphis Bleak
You know who a sleeper nigga doing countries, too. I'mma put two sleepers that's out there doing countries. That's like, under the radar. Number one, Tiger, tiger, everywhere. You will look up and be like, where the. Is this in India? How in Ja Rule.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Oh, yeah.
Memphis Bleak
Ja Rule be everywhere too much. Like, they be out.
Lauren LaRosa
Hey, y', all, what's up? It's Lauren LaRosa, and we gotta talk. We gotta get into something. That Sprite just dropped, because this is right up my alley. As somebody who's been in audio and hip hop culture for over a decade, this is exactly the kind of thing I geek out about, okay? It's called the Sprite Living track list. 50 tracks. Hand picked that shaped hip hop from the ground up to right now. And this isn't just a playlist to bob your head to all cute. This is designed to start real conversation to get people arguing. Y' all know how y' all love to do about the hip hop and the list reminiscing as well. Sending it to their group chats like yo, do y' all remember when this song was it? And honestly, as a producer of content campaigns like this hit different for me. I spend my life thinking about how the perfect story gets told, how one moment in a song becomes a moment for the culture and seeing 50 records that literally define eras of hip hop laid out like this side by side, Yo, Masterclass Chef Kiss, now this list itself, it's incredible. You've got the foundational stuff sitting right next to the new class, Real then and now vibes. My personal top picks from the pack. I gotta go with Unity, Bodak Yellow and who's that Girl Child. See how many of these 50 you grew up on, which ones surprised you, and which ones you're sending to your friends. First, check out the full Sprite Living Track List and break down the stories behind your favorite bars@livingtracklist. Genius.com this is the Sprite Living Track List. Obey your thirst.

I don't really do this too much but you a pioneer so I gotta ask you we gonna go top five DJs and top five rappers and not they don't gotta be east coast. It don't gotta be all New York. It'll be whatever you feel. But you being the pioneer seeing where the game has came we celebrated 3030 years bro, do you fucking people.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
People gonna be like, I'm very biased. That's cool.
Memphis Bleak
That's all good for me.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I'm gonna go with the rappers first. Jay Z is definitely my number one rapper. I don't, I don't care what anybody say because I seen it from the beginning.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah, you saw.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
You was there. I saw from where it started to where it's at, the demos that I've heard, and I believed in them. When people were saying, nah, that's right. You understand what I'm saying? And to this day, number one rapper, hands down.
Memphis Bleak
I agree.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And after that I'm gonna go with Rakim. After that I'm go with Kane.
Cabenuva Advertiser
Ooh.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
After that I'm gonna go with Slick Rick. And then after that I'm gonna have to say 50 cent.
Memphis Bleak
Oh, you put 50 on the top five?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Just cause of mixtapes by Circuit and all that and how he built his shit.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah, yeah, I'm not mad. He went from the ground up too. I'm not mad. But a lot, I never, you know, a lot of people never put fifth on the top five.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I mean, for what they look at certain balls and stuff, but I look at the work ethics, okay. And how you got there.
Memphis Bleak
That's dope.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Who you think about? How HOV did?
Memphis Bleak
Yup, HOV. Rakim Kane, Slick Rick and 50. That's a solid five. That's a solid five. Cause Kane and Rakim, I feel like people tried to do to them what they did to Lil Wayne and T.I. like, which one you fuck with, where they both is great at what they do, but they tried to make you choose which one. And I feel like they, they did that with Kane and Rakim. But hey, man, shit. All right, now DJ, now DJing is
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
going to be another biased situation, right? Because Clark ken is number one by far, one of the greatest DJs I've met.
Memphis Bleak
That's right.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
You know what I mean? Then people that influenced me and got me into where I wanted to be. Charlie Chase.
Memphis Bleak
Oh, I ain't heard that name in a minute.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It was a cold crush. Then it's Kid Capri.
Memphis Bleak
Kid Capri, that's my dog, Kid Capri rapping now. You know what I mean? He got.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Boy, he been rapping though. But he been rapping during his mixtapes.
Memphis Bleak
I ain't know that. Back in the day. Yeah, he used to just come to the stool, dropping off beats of Jet on his tour bus. He go drove that tour bus more than John Madden.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
So Kid is a major influence. Yes, Brucey B. Super influenced because of his voice. So my voice was, you know, built off that.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And then after that, I'm gonna say my young boy, because I Met him at 16, too. Technician and DJ.
Memphis Bleak
Oh, shout out tech. The DJ in the building. Yeah, I mean, he said he met me as a shorty, too. He said way back, he said, when the office ain't having furniture on Johnson street, yo, that's how I know. I was definitely in the teens back then. My G. Facts.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
No, I remember when I met you, when you. We went to Marcy and I met you.
Memphis Bleak
No way. That's. We met.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
It was in Marcy.
Memphis Bleak
Damn, that's ill. Yep. See, trying to front. Blizzard was outside. Stop playing with me.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And Jay was like, nice. My young boy. He got some. And I was like, all right. Waiting.
Memphis Bleak
Yeah, yeah. Yo, and that's another thing to have you right here. We just celebrated 30 years of reasonable Doubt, man. How'd that feel to you to witness it from the beginning? You know,
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Reasonable Die was forever my classic album. Right, Because. And another thing is, you know the. The song Can I live? Yes.
Memphis Bleak
You.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
You hear the ad libs when Jay is talking that go live nigga and all that? You know, that's Tone.
Memphis Bleak
You know Tone? I heard the rumor that Tone was supposed to spit the second verse.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I ain't know about that, but I was supposed to do those ad libs.
Memphis Bleak
You lying.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I did the ad libs. I went in the studio, Niggas kicked me out.
Memphis Bleak
Why they kick you out? The stew, bro.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
They kicked me out the boo.
Memphis Bleak
It's like, nah, nah.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Because I didn't have the flow. Because I didn't catch the flow. The rhythm wasn't what I was. What I was talking was.
Memphis Bleak
Was like, mixtape. Yes, yes.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
He wanted more subtle. So Tone caught that. That's Tone Hooker T Strong. I did it first, and then they took me up.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, that's crazy, yo. You remember and see. Yeah, I could bring up stories like this, but we ain't gonna say who did it to him. You remember DJ Red Handed?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, I remember that.
Memphis Bleak
You still. You still see him? I never seen him.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I haven't seen him, but I spoken to him, yo.
Memphis Bleak
I never seen him again, man. Like, that nigga leaked. So, yeah, they got him and did him.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
That's when he called me and I called Jay. I'm gonna tell you what Jay told me. So he was like, yo, call Jay. Tell him I'm bringing the stuff, whatever, right? And then Jay said, stay out of it, Chubb. And I said, all Right. Talk to you later, Jay.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, listen. Yo, listen. This how it really was. So, yo, one thing HOV didn't play about is his music. And a lot of niggas know that. But this dj, for some reason, this nigga had the braids down. I ain't gonna say who did it, but just know the button was pushed and niggas got him and hit him with the clipper right down the middle. Cut off one braid, baldy, for leaking the record off. Reasonable dime.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
That's tough.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, Chubb. See, I forgot about that. I was sitting here.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Make me remember that.
Memphis Bleak
Like, yo, I tried, but he's like,
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
yo, stay out of it, Chub. And I never forget that. He's like, yo, stay out of it, Chub. I was like, all right, no doubt.
Memphis Bleak
You know, yo, that's crazy. And then another thing, I feel like, as a producer, they don't give Ski his props.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Of course not.
Memphis Bleak
Like, I feel like Ski should go down as one of the top pioneers in music, because the sound he created back then is still being duplicated to this day. I had no idea he produced Can I Get Open? That beat is classic.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
He produced the whole album. We didn't have nobody aside besides Clark the Clock joint that Clark did. But everything else was Ski.
Memphis Bleak
Damn, that's crazy. Ski.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
You know how many demo Ski did for Jay that he did for Jay? And then they just erased those beats.
Memphis Bleak
I know. Never used them. Yeah, Jay got like, four albums of demos that they never put out. They gotta reach the top.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
95 south, all of that.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, back then, I used to be like, yo, Hov, let me. Let me get these bars. Like, you not using them. Let me get these.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Well, you know, I almost killed Jay.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, yo, you said that how you almost killed. You said going on to the studio.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, we was going to DC. This is when Rap City was in
Memphis Bleak
D.C. yo, remember that?
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Everything was in one Prince de jour. Yo, you bringing up all the.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, Prince Deja is crazy.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
That's the episode we had did. And that's where I almost killed everybody. Yo, and it wasn't my fault, though. We had. I had to the party the night before we hit the road. I got out the club, I took all my records upstairs. We was in my projects, and they was like, yo, you gotta drive. I was like, how can I drive?
Memphis Bleak
I just finish Word up.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I just brought five crates of records upstairs to the ninth floor in my
Memphis Bleak
building, and I gotta drive.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
And you want me to drive? I was like, let's Ski drive. Nah, Ski can't drive. Ski had a license. Damien had a license.
Memphis Bleak
Jay got a license.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I was like, let one of them drive. Yeah. He's like, nah, you gotta drive. I was like, it's crazy. I'm tired, bro.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, you left tired. That's fucked up. That's crazy.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Jason in the front, Dave, Tone and Ski in the back. We driving, bro. We ain't get past Delaware, bro.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, chill.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
We ain't get past Delaware. When I tell you, the car starts swerving and all kind of parts of the. Of the road, bro. When I get under the. It was like a brick under the bridge. That joint almost smacked right into that joint. I caught it.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, chill.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I caught the whole truck to the side, and it just stopped. So. Oh, yeah. Dame, you fat, yo, you almost killed. This is just talking crazy. J. J was sleep. Jay woke up. You know, I used to carry gum. I got. I got mint, though, now. So he's like. He went me a piece of gum. I give him a piece of gum. Yeah, I wish I had this on video. Jay got up with the gun in mouth. Like I said, out the sea.
Memphis Bleak
Said straight out the sea, homie.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
You, you know no more word up. That's what I go to. I go out to go see to get out. I thought Dame was going. I mean, Dame did sit in the front, so I thought I sit in the back where Dame was at. I think I said, nah, N put me with the luggage.
Memphis Bleak
Yo, chill. Yo, yo, chill. And they was on that type of time back then.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Niggas bags. I ain't kidding when I woke up like that. Need me to drop now, yo, yo,
Memphis Bleak
that's why I be trying to tell Dame and them was so foul. Don't up. They putting you on front street chewing like, yo, you nah out of here. Back in the crib. Like niggas left me. They went on that tour with Big and them because I missed one studio session to say, you're done. No tour. Missed the whole bad boy run. All that for one session. I never missed another session again, my G. I ain't missing nothing. Kidding me. I missed that tour was the illest ever, yo.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
So crazy.
Memphis Bleak
What's next, man, for you? What you got? Like, you want to promote to the P? Let them know.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I mean, you know, right now on Tuesdays, I do 94. 7 of blocks of throwback.
Memphis Bleak
That's right. I love it.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
I do that. I just did a. A tribute to the 30. I did that on Tuesday. I played Coming of age. No, I played Crew Love. Crew love.
Memphis Bleak
Let's Go Crue love. Yo, jb. Yo, he should have gave me more time, dog. Even though that one song, I take it. I take it, it changed my life. But we supposed to be rocking joints like that.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, but that coming of age was always my favorite.
Memphis Bleak
Timeless. My G is timeless.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
A G. I ride with you for
Memphis Bleak
free that put it down. My G with that joint. And, you know, people look at me and be like, yo, you ain't right. Like, fuck no. I was 14, 16 when I dropped. When it came out. I didn't even know what equilibrium meant back then. Like, fact. It wasn't till it came out. Doing. I'm like, oh, that's what I'm talking about.
Lauren LaRosa
Cool.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah, that. That's a. That's a classic song. B, that. That. That on that album is classic for me. And. And seeing how young you was. And then you start hearing, like, mind, right? That's what I appreciate you. That was like the tunnel. That was them days.
Memphis Bleak
That's when New York was New York. And I feel like we got that energy back in New York. I feel like that energy right there is back. Like, the Knicks won the chip. Jace just shut down Yankee Stadium for the whole weekend. And the city just has a vibe that I haven't felt in New York City, bro, since probably, like late 2002, 2003.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Nah, it's definitely a lot. A lot more music going around. And it's just. People just gotta get right to it.
Memphis Bleak
That's right, man.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Just gotta get right to it. They just gotta. Yeah, that's what it is. You gotta. You gotta filter the people. You just gotta get out there and feel what's going on and create that vibe again. Cause. Cause people are afraid, man. They are a lot of people afraid to make music that makes sense. That's right.
Memphis Bleak
And be theyself. They just following the trend. They scared.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)
Yeah. Like, people who want to use drums, use the drums. You want to use a loop, use the loop.
Memphis Bleak
Exactly. But you have going in.
DJ Diesel (DJ Chubby Chub)

In this episode of ROC Solid, host Memphis Bleek sits down with legendary DJ Chubby Chub—now going by DJ Diesel. The conversation is a deep dive into Chubby Chub's origin story, his role in early Roc-A-Fella history, classic New York hip hop, the evolution of the DJ, untold studio stories, and his inspirational personal transformation. Listeners get firsthand accounts of the golden era, untold Roc stories, and reflections on how hip hop—and their lives—have changed over time.
Upbringing in the Bronx:
Chub reveals he is 100% Puerto Rican and discusses growing up in a Spanish-speaking household in the Bronx. Hip hop felt outside his home until he immersed himself in block parties and park jams.
Influence of the Legends:
Chub is inspired by Bronx street history—mentions Cold Crush, Brucie B, Kid Capri, and especially DJ Clark Kent. Clark took him under his wing, gave him major club gigs, and brought him into the fold.
Original Flavor Era:
Chub was the DJ for Original Flavor, with Dame Dash as manager and Jay-Z as a featured artist. He describes transitions in the group and how Clark Kent helped them land a deal at Atlantic Records.
Jay-Z's First Mixtape Appearances:
Chub was the first to put Jay-Z on mixtape, playing demos and promoting his craft.
Road DJ for Jay-Z:
As part of Jay-Z’s original crew, Chub DJed for Jay from the very first tours—before major label success—experiencing “the denial days” when industry figures wouldn't take them seriously.
Hard Pack & Sauce Money:
Memphis Bleek and Chub reflect on lost chemistry between Jay-Z, Sauce Money, and Jaz due to the group not staying together. Chub mentions holding onto classic, unreleased demos.
DIY Ethos of the Era:
Roc-A-Fella’s early hustle: stuffing records in car trunks, moving music with no major label budgets—just relentless grind.
Dame Back in the Day:
Dame was described as “straightforward to it, business all day” and a relentless joker—once clowning Chub for wearing an all-red outfit.
Project Life and Fashion Jokes:
The crew pokes fun at each other’s fits (“What are you, the army nurse?”), and reminisce about buying out boots in every color—old school vibes.
Evolution of Audience & Artist Lifespan:
Chub notes music is more disposable—songs last for “the weekend.” There's less scene unity, few defining “movements,” and everything is driven by streaming and digital discovery.
The DJ’s Diminished Influence (But Not in Clubs!):
DJs have grown into their own brands, sometimes bigger than artists. But on radio, they’re "handcuffed"—no freedom to break new music, not even on satellite radio. Club DJs, though, still have that power.
Chasing the EDM Bag:
Discussion about world-touring DJs commanding huge paydays, and how many traditional hip hop DJs are pivoting to EDM for the business opportunities.
(35:52)
Reasonable Doubt Memories & Studio Stories:
Chub was nearly the voice on “Can I Live?” ad-libs but got “kicked out” for missing the subtlety Jay wanted.
Studio Loyalty and Consequences:
Tales of DJ Red Handed leaking Reasonable Doubt music—and getting his braids chopped for it.
Chub Almost Killed Jay?
Chub tells a harrowing story about falling asleep at the wheel with a car full of Roc-A-Fella crew en route to “Rap City”—barely avoiding disaster.
The episode is a vivid and personal archive of New York hip hop life—humorous, raw, and historically rich. Chubby Chub’s journey runs from the gritty, hand-to-mouth beginnings of Roc-A-Fella to present-day fitness inspiration and global DJing. It’s a celebration of hip hop’s longevity (and 30 years of Reasonable Doubt), a look at how the game—and its gatekeepers—have changed, plus a series of jewels and behind-the-scenes moments that only come from living the culture.
For fans of hip hop and Roc lore, this is 100% ROC Solid.
