So I wanna know the story of REM So my first question is, I want you to take us back to what the environment was that shaped you to the woman we know today.

Oh, man. I try to explain to people all the time like, that the era that I came up in, like, it's dope. I love what social media is providing for people in the different, you know, lanes that is opening. But, you know, I came up in it ever where, like, you really had to be nice.

Because There was no TikTok, there was no Instagram, There was no Snapchat. Like, some of these people, I felt like people like they craft, but they like them as a person. But then there's Mia X and Gangsta Bull Spitters, and they was in the South. And then they had Rage and the Boss, and they was in Cali. And then you had Brat, and I'm from Chicago. So it was like. It was like very regional when I was coming up. I feel like nowadays the regions don't matter as much as they used to. Like, you know, people be like, oh, she's from Atlanta or she's from Miami. But it's not regional. Like it was coming up. So I just feel like you had a little bit more pressure to be good.

First of all, that's the most annoying thing to me. And I wasn't even an artist. I was like, I'm never running up on somebody. Like, yo, listen to me rap real quick. Like, I was never, ever doing that. That was never my bout. It was never happening. I knew I could rap because I was hanging out with all the gangsters and all the good money niggas. They would take me to different neighborhoods and hop out. I was like their secret weapon. They'll be putting up bread for people to battle. Then they think because I'm a girl, they want a girl out here. And I Should really just be going from hood to hood, hopping out, smoking them. I had all the Vansens they was paying me. Advancing Jansports. Air Max.

I used to write poems. Like, in school. I used to do poetry. I used to be in school. I was like a nerd in school. I won all the spelling bees. I won. We used to have something called the storytelling contest. We used to have to memorize a book from the first page to the end. And the judges would sit, like, on the panel and have the book while you read it on stage. Like, I used to go into stuff like that all the science fairs. Like, that was my thing in school. So when my brother used to come home and rap, I would take my poetry book and try to find ones that rhymed naturally and put over beat. And then at some point, I stopped writing poems and just had a book of rhymes as opposed to a book of rhymes.

I'm looking at all these old. That's what I used to be saying. You know, when you're teenage, you think it's 27.

They, you know, they parents, they grandparents pass away, then they take over the apartment. And then they raise their kids in the projects. Like, it's just like. Just. They keep passing the lease over in the projects in nature.

Grown ass men that don't do nothing.

I was always popular. Some people that, you know, they get into the industry and they become popular and they have this preconceived notion of what popular people should act like and how they should move and whatever.

And I took my whole budget. They might have paid me about, like 60,000 a year. 67. And I took my whole budget. I called Kim, I called MC Light, I called Cardi, I called Young, and may I call Yo. Yo, I called Queen Latifah and whatever they needed. Hair, makeup, flights, whatever. I took my budget and I got everybody. Like, I wanted to show, like, yo, just the different. With the people that came before me, the people that was fired, people that I seen that was coming. Like, Cardi didn't even have a Bodak. Yellow was out, but niggas wasn't. They wasn't even playing it no hot. Like, I had a big ass argument with N. Cause I just wanted to give a. Literally 120 seconds on my set to the point I was like, well, it's my set, so I don't really care what y' all feel. And that's it. After that, when she started, like, doing this, everybody was like, oh, Remy was right. I don't wanna hear it. I know I was right.

But I wanted to, like, you know, make it. Make it a moment.

That. And I feel like from that moment, people was able to see and take it like, oh, they all could be together. The way everybody was backstage, fangirling out over each other was like, Craig Rod Digga. Like, oh, shit, I ain't see you, man.

It was just like a whole different thing. Shout out to Ra. She always reaches out. Shout out to Moni Love. She always reaches out.

And then obviously, after the success of all the women that was coming out after with Latto and Cardi and Glorella and the Monalos and Kendam, man, just all these different girls that are coming from different other regions, and everybody be saying, like, oh, everybody sounds the same. But I don't know, maybe because I am a rapper, like, I'm like, oh, Well, I can see how these two y' all can say, but this is

a little bit different.

Like me, I group things differently.

But I love it.

I love that there's so many. I love that they're working together.

Because we didn't have a lot of that. Like, it's so many women that I wanted to work with. And I guess you could say what my era was then, politics always played an issue. Even now, like, I'm working on a project and I just see the politics. I'd be like, all right, it's cool, it's fine. And it don't even be the artist most of the time.

It be the team, it be the label, it be the middlemen all the time. That's why I like direct links. I hate middlemen.

Absolutely.

I feel the same way.

Looking back over your journey from the Bronx to where you at today, what would you say you most proud of?

[Remy Ma]

What am I most proud of? I wanna say off the top, probably just. Just still being here.

[Memphis Bleak]

That's right.

[Remy Ma]

Still being the longevity. Because, you know, when I was coming up, there was a lot of people that, if you were to ask at the time, was more popular than me, was making more money than me. People may even thought they was more talented than me. They had more accolades than me at the time. My fast forward 20 years later, they don't look better than me. They don't got more money than me.

[Memphis Bleak]

That's right. They're not making more moves than you.

[Remy Ma]

They like. So, you know, I.

The longevity says. And that's. That's something that I learned from my brother. Like, a lot of times, like, I remember, like, we would be sitting back and we'll see other artists, and it looked like everybody was going past him and he wasn't like, you know, really getting the credit, regardless of how many hit records he had or whatever. But. And I told him, I said, you'd rather do this and fall or climb?

Rather do a slow climb. That's right.

[Remy Ma]

You know what I'm saying? So, you know, I take my. My path that I do. I kind of model it after. After my brother, because the longevity is what's matter. I. I would love, like, I would have loved to be one of those people that get one hit the record and just skyrocket through and just worldwide success. Like, it looked like it was fun, but. But, you know, looking back, when I see the outcome of that, the outcome of that, I wouldn't change it. I'm Happy for the grind that I had to put in. I'm happy. And I'm still grinding.

I'm still grinding. I don't know how to not grind, how to not hustle.

That's why I told him, I forget my name before, I forget how to grind.

I gotta get to it.

I have to get to it. I've never been. You know, I tell people all the time, like, I'm in my soft girl era. It's cool. I'm not paying for nothing. I'm not. But I still gotta have my own money.

You gotta just think, like, I gotta have my. I can never be, like, dependent on somebody. And not even just dependent, just idle. Like, I see some people, like, you know, women, they have a dude and he got the band. They really don't have to work. They don't gotta. They don't even gotta do the housewife type shit. Cause they got a housekeeper and they got a nanny, and they got this. And they just be chilling. They just shop and travel with their friends. I would still be doing something. Like, I would have to do something.

I couldn't have a woman just sitting there all day.

[Remy Ma]

It's something.

You gotta do something. Go do Pilates, Do. Do something.

[Remy Ma]

Go do arts and craft. Literally, to me, it would be. My God, be like, yo, I know I said I wasn't gonna do Nothing, but that 50,000 you gave me, I took it and I did this and. And here's this. That's right, this. What I mean, like, I would. That would be me. Like, because now it's just. I'm just playing just freestyling like, it's not even my bread. I could be so. You know, I could just play with your money and go, like, go like this.

That's what it is. I'd rather that. That, like, Like, I just. I don't know. I have a different mentality. I have a different way of looking at things. And even so now, like, I tell people something, they'd be like, yo, I know I know her. We went to school together, bro. You do not know we went to school together. You like, you know how many me

I've been since then? You know how many me, like, since you know me from high school, same person from high school.

If you didn't speak to me in the last three months, you might not know me. Yo, I'm dead serious.

If a young woman is watching this in the Bronx, anywhere in the world right now, and they get their hands on this interview, what's one lesson from your journey you would want that young woman to carry with them?

[Remy Ma]

Just, I would say probably just gotta be careful about the mistakes that you make. Cause we all make mistakes.

[Memphis Bleak]

Choices.

[Remy Ma]

The choices. We all make mistakes. But it's not even about the choice. Choose what you want to choose, but you. Because careful of the mistakes that you make. Because some mistakes will literally erase all the good stuff you done.

[Memphis Bleak]

That's a fact.

[Remy Ma]

You could do 150,000 good things. One, one mistake will erase all of that. And nobody won't care. You could scream to the top of the. I donated turkeys on Thanksgiving. I hugged babies and kissed babies that like, they don't care. They don't care. And I think as women sometimes, sometimes we, we lean. Especially if you pretty or you cute. Like, we lean on certain because that's, that's, that's just what it is. If you look, if you're more on the attractive side, you get privileges that, that people don't do. And, And I think sometimes, not all the time. Sometimes we don't really factor in all the things that matter. Like even. Just your reputation.

I learned very long ago, like, what people thought about me.

And I used to not care. I don't care what they think. I don't care. Like, I know who I am. The people who I love and people who rock with me, they know who I am.

That shit was a lie. It matters what people think about you.

It's a fact. Cause it's your brand.

If people think. If people think you a hoe, they gonna handle like that.

If people think you a snake, they're gonna hand you like that. If people think, you know, you're a liar. If they. All of these things that matter. So I would say, like, you know, be careful the mistakes you make and just, Just know that everything matters. Even the shit that you think don't matter.

It matters. So when it's all said and done, I'm not gonna hold you. I just want you to end with the I Just want the people to really know REM when it's all said and done, what do you want the people to say about Remy Ma? Not just the artist, but as the person.

I don't like the ending just yet. You know, I think I'm still in that phase where people judge me on what they think they know about me. People, you know, judge me on my past. I find myself. I used to be trying to explain to people like, yo, just cause somebody went to jail, that doesn't mean they bad. You think that the cops and the judge and the jury got it right every time? Everybody that's in jail is not guilty. Everybody that's walking around is not innocent. Like, I just. I was just like, you know what? I'm never gonna change anybody's mind or whatever they think. That's what they think. The only thing I can do is change what I'm doing right now and give them something. Like, I've literally seen people like, I don't really. I ain't never used to really. Like, she's starting to grow on me. I'm starting like. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like. And I'm okay with that.

I'm okay with people that didn't used to be okay with me. Because when I look back, some of that used to be saying was, wow,

it was for that era. It was for that era.

But it wasn't even just the era. It's just the way that we grew up. Like, people think I'm mean, and they think I'm like. And it's like, I don't care. I care now. Like, I don't want people to think I'm a mean girl.

I want people to think, like, you know, I'm stupid. Like, that's probably the one. I'll think I'm mean, think I'm ugly, think I think I'm broke, think I'm. Don't think I'm stupid. That one bothers me. Like, I will go above and be like, throw in jeopardy right now. Let's see you chill. We can get right. Jeopardy is there. My heart, like, real bad. Throw it on. Let's See, I. I promise you, so that to me, that's important. But I think. I think I'm gonna be okay.
