After declaring early for the NFL draft, he was undrafted and found himself working at Walmart when the Buffalo Bills called. He was cut by the Bills, but now at age 29, he’s still pursuing his dreams of playing in the NFL. His story is one of perseverance, resilience, and a never quit attitude. In this episode, we learn the story of Coach JT Burton. Coach Burton had been coaching college basketball at the NAIA level for six years when he got the call to become an assistant coach and director of player development for the men’s basketball team at the University of Tennessee. This position could have helped Coach Burton realize his dreams of eventually becoming a Division 1 NCAA basketball coach. Instead, after one short year, the entire Tennessee staff was fired after NCAA sanctions were handed down on the head coach. Coach Burton was back at square one but continued to move forward with his dreams and is now the head basketball coach at Division 2 Tusculum University. In this episode, we learn the story of Rod versus the waterslide. Because of holiday scheduling, this week we had no guest for Rocket Motivation, and so I took the opportunity to talk about my experience of riding a waterslide – one that has a trap door you stand on that opens, allowing a free fall down a tube. I’ve always been an adrenaline junky, even with my profound physical disability. The waterslide story is a metaphor for my life in that it addresses (1) overcoming obstacles and adversity, specifically climbing six flights of stairs to reach the top; (2) not allowing embarrassment or being worried about what others think to stop you from doing something you want to do; and (3) how quickly life goes. In this episode, we learn the story of Manja Podratz. Manja was born and raised in East Germany, where she obtained a Ph.D. in Theory of Architecture and other degrees. She taught at the college level for multiple years. She moved to the United States with her husband and children and went through a traumatizing divorce where she was basically trapped in a foreign country unable to leave, unable to work, and barely able to support herself and her children. She used her despair to change her life. She took the first step of baking and selling bread to support her family. She then started a career helping others overcome bad circumstances in their lives. In this episode, we learn the story of Larry Hartle. Larry had his dream job working for Richard Childress Racing as the gas man on a pit crew for several NASCAR drivers, including Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick. During a pit stop, a tire came loose and rolled into Larry’s knee, injuring him to the degree he could no longer do his job. Following surgery and subsequent knee replacement, Larry took a job as an airplane mechanic working 3rd shift five days a week at the Charlotte, North Carolina airport, 99 miles away from his home. Larry moved on from his dream job, sucked it, and did what he had to do to provide for his family. Dealing with adversity in whatever form is what Rocket Motivation is all about. In this episode, we learn the story of Derrick Dalton. Derrick grew up in a tough environment in which his father spent the majority of the time in prison for dealing drugs. Derrick persevered with the help of teachers and coaches, along with his internal strength, to become a talented high school and college athlete, but more importantly, he realized what he wanted to do with his life was to help others who were facing struggles that may not be apparent. Derrick obtained a master’s degree in education and administration and is currently working on his doctorate. His career has included teaching, being a principal, and now consulting to help improve failing schools.
