Jeff
Learn a little bit. Maybe, maybe not want to learn about this type of thing. We're going to talk about people pleasing fear of man, or if you really want to call it from the psychological
Pastor
perspective, you know, codependency. Okay. I mean, that's what most people probably would think of if we started talking about this, like on the street or something. They'll think of codependency and. But we're going with the biblical terms,
Jeff
which is fear of man. Okay, so how many of you guys
Pastor
know what the fear of man is? Okay. And who. You got it.
Jeff
Okay. You're like, it's Gene. Yeah. The fear of man is something that, that I struggled with for. For a fair. For a fair portion of my life, even when I started working at the mission, and probably only until maybe a couple years ago, maybe three or four, but still, it was something that I
Pastor
dealt with a lot. I wanted the approval of the people in management so that they would, you
Jeff
know, look at me in a certain way or think about me in a certain way. Now, I don't live for that stuff. Right.
Pastor
God.
Jeff
God broke that. Now do other times where things like
Pastor
that can come up? Absolutely.
Jeff
You know, you know, that's part of
Pastor
the frailty of humanity.
Jeff
You know, where we do still fall, even. Even as believers, right.
Pastor
We know that we can fail, but that's why when we do, we run
Jeff
to God instead of away from God.
Pastor
Okay?
Jeff
So it's how.
Pastor
So comes down to having the right view of God. Okay?
Jeff
So before we go any deeper, let's
Pastor
turn to the Lord and pray.
Jeff
Father, we just pray that we'd all lean into that transformation, into the sanctification,
Pastor
Lord, that the counselor, the great counselor, the Holy Spirit brings.
Jeff
And Lord, I pray in this time, this morning that you would reveal to us the things that you want us
Pastor
to learn, how you want to convict
Jeff
us and how you want to change
Pastor
us from maybe a wrong mindset to a right one. So, Lord, transform and renew our minds in these areas, Lord.
Jeff
Help us to confess any areas that we are, are holding on to and
Pastor
not wanting to repent of. Lord.
Jeff
And Father, I pray that you use me to speak this morning.
Pastor
Lord, Let the words be your words and not my own. Lord, rightly divided word of truth.
Jeff
I just thank you for this message
Pastor
and this devotion, time.
Jeff
Lord, we give all to you, Father,
Pastor
we pray these things in the glorious name of Jesus. Amen.
Jeff
All right, so the snare of man's
Pastor
approval from people pleaser to God pleaser.
Jeff
Okay, so people pleaser is the other
Pastor
simpler Term from the psychological understanding. Okay, so what is a people pleaser? Anybody know what is a codependent?
Jeff
Okay, a yes man enabler.
Pastor
Right.
Jeff
Always wanting to. Right, so somebody who's wanting to be accepted.
Pastor
Right? You want to be accepted all the time.
Jeff
So you'll do almost anything to get accepted by people. Okay, so before we jump into what I have here, I want to look at what, a couple of notable names. You don't have this paper.
Pastor
I didn't want to give you guys too much, but a couple notable names.
Jeff
Who's ever heard of John Piper?
Pastor
Okay, a few people.
Jeff
Okay, so John Piper is a pastor,
Pastor
an author, a theologian, okay.
Jeff
And he has this to say about
Pastor
the fear of man and people pleasing.
Jeff
Okay, so John Piper consistently addresses the
Pastor
fear of man within his theological framework of Christian hedonism. I'm not 100 sure what Christian hedonism is. Do you. Do you have an definition? Huh?
Jeff
Okay, good. I didn't have a chance to look it up. The belief that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. The power of a superior pleasure. Piper argues that the fear of man, like any other sin, is broken by
Pastor
the power of a superior pleasure in God.
Jeff
We are bound to the fear of man because the approval and acceptance of people fear feel more satisfying, safe and
Pastor
real than the promises of God. Can anybody resonate with that? Yeah.
Jeff
Right? Because it's here and now. You can. It's. It's tangible, Right? And you can see that person giving
Pastor
you approval or accepting you in some way. So, you know, you would be like,
Jeff
yeah, I want that because I like the now.
Pastor
Right?
Jeff
Because we. We feel like we're not experiencing God in the now.
Pastor
Okay.
Jeff
He also says the goal is God's glory.
Pastor
Right?
Jeff
That's the goal. For Piper, the ultimate problem with fearing man is that it distracts us from our highest calling, enjoying and glorifying God. The fear of man is a competing devotion that must be replaced by a greater desire for praise from God. Okay, so you're replacing the lesser with the greater, right, because the acceptance of people and the praise of people is lesser.
Pastor
Right?
Jeff
We want God.
Pastor
Right?
Jeff
We should want God.
Pastor
We should want to glorify God and
Jeff
for him to one day look at us and go, well done, good and faithful servant.
Pastor
Enter into my rest that I have prepared for you. Right?
Jeff
So we want God to be the one that we. We're receiving that.
Pastor
That from that acceptance from. Right?
Jeff
And it is in his grace through. Through faith in Christ that we can
Pastor
actually receive that acceptance. Right. Because when you're in Christ, you become an heir and child of God, right?
Jeff
Before that you're an image bearer of
Pastor
God, but you are not a child of.
Jeff
So John Piper, I mean he's, he's got a great understanding here, right?
Pastor
That you need to go from the
Jeff
lesser to the greater. So stop thinking that the lesser is the greater.
Pastor
And then,
Jeff
and one other guy, his name is Lou Priolo, he's a biblical counselor.
Pastor
He's.
Jeff
I believe he may have passed away recently, but he's.
Pastor
This is what it, what, what he's gotten.
Jeff
Okay, so Lou Priolo, another prominent biblical counselor and author, emphasizes the practicing the practical and illogical bondage that people pleasing creates.
Pastor
Right? It's a bondage. It's interesting to think, huh?
Jeff
Slavery to the many. Priollo highlights the sheer futility of sin, stating that inordinate people pleasing brings a person into bondage by enslaving them every. Enslaving them to every man they desire to please. Okay, so your desires are wrong. You have a desire problem in this, right? Okay, so the audience of one. Hey. He counsels that Christians must perform on the stage of one. God is the sole audience, right? God is the one that we are living for and who we are looking to in everything. At least that's how it's supposed to be.
Pastor
All right?
Jeff
But sin has distorted that. Hey, trying to please thousands of different people is an impossible, exhausting and self defeating task. You guys ever feel like that? Like, man, I'm trying so hard to be accepted and I am just tired, right? I'm like worn out because I've been working so hard to get these people to, to just love me and care for me.
Pastor
Oh.
Jeff
And it's just comes from a wrong and inordinate thinking of who God is beyond, right?
Pastor
You're looking at God is not sufficient.
Jeff
So in Proverbs 29, 25, okay? And in the ESV it says the fear of man lays a snare. But whoever trusts in the Lord is safe. Here in the legacy standard it says trembling before man brings a snare. But he who trusts in Yahweh will be set securely on high. So the fear of man is a snare, right? What's a snare? Right? It's a trap. It's a thing that gets set, set for like that people use to hunt and they'll trap their prey, right? And then they'll come and they'll take
Pastor
it and do whatever they're going to do with it.
Jeff
Okay, so we are laying a trap for Ourselves. Pretty interesting, right? To think that I'm laying a trap for myself and I'm going to willingly
Pastor
step right into it and be caught up in something that I shouldn't be caught up in. Right? Right.
Jeff
I'm going to be caught up in caring what all of you think about
Pastor
me more than what God. Right.
Jeff
We don't come up here to perform for you. Right. We're not like some monkey trying to gain. Gain something from you.
Pastor
That's not why we come up and do this.
Jeff
That's not why we work for, for a ministry.
Pastor
Right.
Jeff
We don't do it for accolades. We don't do it to look good to other people. Sure. People recognize you at times. They go, hey, wait a minute. I saw you in one of those, those Rescue Mission commercials or I saw you on, on YouTube or you were on like the, the Instagram for, hey, that the Mission's hiring and I saw your picture.
Pastor
It's like, cool. Do you want to come work today?
Jeff
You know, like, we don't do it for all those things. We don't work in the New Life program because we want to be accepted by other people. It's because God has called us into a ministry that we never thought we
Pastor
would probably be a part of. Right.
Jeff
When I was growing up, I thought I was going to be in youth ministry. I know there's several of you in here right now.
Pastor
You want to be in youth ministry.
Jeff
So that's what I pursued.
Pastor
Right.
Jeff
I gained schooling and stuff in that.
Pastor
Oh.
Jeff
And then never used it.
Pastor
Right. I did security for 13 years and worked at a church for 10 years,
Jeff
but on the facilities team.
Pastor
Okay.
Jeff
So, you know, it's like, like, okay, God, what are you doing? What are you doing with all this? Why am I working in, in this instead of that? It's like, because that wasn't the plan. It's great.
Pastor
You got, you got learned. You learned stuff in it, but that wasn't the plan.
Jeff
Like, you went ahead of me and you wanted to please the people at your church who were, were trying to tell you that you're going to do something in ministry. You wanted to please your wife. You wanted to do this, you wanted to do that. But it wasn't about glorifying me. It was about yourself. I was like, thank God we put
Pastor
the gloves back on, you know?
Jeff
And then I remember just when we decided that we were going to move to Idaho, going, man, what am I
Pastor
going to do there?
Jeff
I had no idea. For a month, a month I looked for a job. I applied at Hundreds of places. Only two called me back. One was a trailer place and one was the mission. Had no clue. No clue. I was like, ah, maybe the Lord's going to put me in some sort
Pastor
of ministry where I'm preaching to people
Jeff
and I'm getting to be up front and be the. Be a pastor somewhere, blah, blah.
Pastor
It ought to be great. But again, that came from a point of wanting to be accepted because people love pastors, right?
Jeff
They accept pastors.
Pastor
If you say, man, my name is Pastor Jeff. It's nice to meet you, automatically you're
Jeff
either on guard or you're like, oh, wow, that's cool.
Pastor
A pastor, huh?
Jeff
But again, that would be a wrong
Pastor
way of going about it, okay?
Jeff
I wasn't even a pastor at that point, right? I hadn't become ordained. I only had that youth ministry training, you know. So it's like, I come to the mission, I'm like, cool, I'm just going to work in the, in the facilities and I'm going to just clean up
Pastor
after people and make sure the buildings are ready for, for the day, you know, when people come in in the evening.
Jeff
That was great.
Pastor
But I was failing at the same time, right? Because I was pining for the acceptance of management,
Jeff
you know, and the acceptance of others around me. The guest, oh, guys that were in the nlp. I wanted to be liked, you know?
Pastor
It wasn't for several years that it finally was brought to light and God broke it. He said, we can't do this anymore. You need to be here because of me and to worship me and to glorify me.
Jeff
Not for them and not for yourself, right?
Pastor
Oh, so he.
Jeff
He showed me the snare and the
Pastor
trap that I had laid and how I kept just walking right into it. Bad place to be.
Jeff
And it's heartbreaking when you realize it, when God, like, goes, look at this.
Pastor
This is what you're doing. And if you're not heartbroken over it, then I would venture to say that you don't care what God is saying, right?
Jeff
And you still care more about worshiping
Pastor
the idol of self than you do anything else, right?
Jeff
Because that's ultimately what it comes down
Pastor
to, the fear of man, right?
Jeff
The wanting to be accepted, the wanting to be liked, the wanting to be
Pastor
loved and brought in and even worshiped. It's all about the God of Seth. So that's what it comes down to, right?
Jeff
So the diagnosis, the fear of man is idolatry. Look at Galatians 1, verse 10. All right, so Galatians 1, verse 10 for I am now. For am I now seeking the favor
Pastor
of men or of God?
Jeff
Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please
Pastor
men, I would not be a slave of Christ. Right.
Jeff
So if. If I start seeking to please men, he's telling us that you are no longer striving with the Lord.
Pastor
You are no longer walking with the Lord. In that moment, you have put the
Jeff
brakes on, said, nah, I'm good, and you've moved into a space that, that God never intended.
Pastor
Right. God never intended for us to be our own idols.
Jeff
He never wanted us to worship ourselves. It was always about him. So if we're striving to please man, we're no longer following after Christ.
Pastor
Right.
Jeff
And we're like. We're like, nah, Lord, I'm. I'm good.
Pastor
I'm good.
Jeff
I'm going to go do this.
Pastor
Oh, God.
Jeff
God will.
Pastor
God will pursue you and call you back to himself.
Jeff
And I'm kind of looking at it as.
Pastor
As here is saying, for am I now seeking the favor of man or of God?
Jeff
You know, the question there seems as
Pastor
though he's saying, is my motivation to please man? So I won't get in arguments, and I won't step into conflict because I want to be liked and accepted, or
Jeff
I don't want to engage in this conflict because I know it can cause
Pastor
strife and division, and I'd rather honor the Lord by not stepping into it. Right, right.
Jeff
So what's the motivation? And you have to think about what is the motivation? Am I doing it because I want
Pastor
to be accepted by this person, or am I doing it because I want to honor the Lord? That's the same example that, that, that Jesus gave us. Right.
Jeff
Because he knew people's hearts. He knew it's not worth having this.
Pastor
This conversation. So he would just shut down the
Jeff
conversation very simply, in a way that
Pastor
was still loving, surprisingly.
Jeff
You know, I mean, he did it to the Pharisees pretty often.
Pastor
Yeah.
Jeff
You know, he would just kind of
Pastor
ask the question in another way to
Jeff
them and they couldn't answer. So end the conversation.
Pastor
You know, Jesus was the master at doing this type of thing.
Jeff
The two things, pride and character development.
Pastor
Right, right.
Jeff
So again, the motivation.
Pastor
Right. Is the motivation, you and your being.
Jeff
Right.
Pastor
And needing to win and be accepted, or is it about glorifying God and telling the truth of what he says? Right, right.
Jeff
I mean, you could almost end everything right there.
Pastor
But I think it would be good for us to continue digging into this.
Jeff
Okay, so, Paul, so let's just real quick. I'm going to read through this statement here. Paul states that seeking man's approval is mutually exclusive with serving Christ.
Pastor
Okay.
Jeff
In your life, where does the desire to keep the peace, avoid conflict or gain praise stop you from following God's clear will?
Pastor
Okay.
Jeff
Speaking truth in love, setting boundaries, obeying a personal conviction. And that's a good question for ourselves, right? Where does
Pastor
stopped for me? Okay?
Jeff
And is God calling you to not stop in that area?
Pastor
Right?
Jeff
He's like, I want you to dig further. I want you to go further. Don't stop at just this portion, okay? Once, once you have the conviction on, on avoiding conflict or just keeping the peace, you know, repent of that and keep going. Don't just sit there, right? Because that's a problem. Sometimes we'll realize what the problem is and then we'll just sit, you know, and we'll keep.
Pastor
We'll keep being, getting, getting beaten up about it.
Jeff
We're like, like God's holding me down. God's holding me down. No, you're blaming God for your own problem, which is exactly what we do, right? That's what pride does. It blames God. Instead of recognizing that God is love, God is just love and that God is gracious, we'll look at him go,
Pastor
what's the woman you gave me?
Jeff
Blame him and we'll try to blame everybody else too.
Pastor
Well, it's not my problem, it's their problem. No, your problem. You need to go to God, repent
Jeff
and live into the grace that he has given. Okay? Don't be like what we're going to see here in Romans, chapter one, verse 25.
Pastor
I'm going to read it from the paper here.
Jeff
Because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator who is blessed forever.
Pastor
Amen. Right.
Jeff
Don't exchange the worship of others and the acceptance of others for the love and worship of God. Don't exchange it. And don't fall into the lie that you are somehow greater than what you.
Pastor
What you might.
Jeff
Might have ever known.
Pastor
Because you know we're not. We're not.
Jeff
You ain't that important. I'm not that important. None of us are that important. But you want to know one thing? God sees us and he says, you have worth and value enough that I'm willing to come in the flesh, die so that you can be saved and set free from all these things. But your pride will hold you back. So you're going to receive the grace. Are you going to exchange the truth for a lie and worship the creature rather than creator. You're going to make images of gold. Are you going to try to cover yourself? You're going to try to hide? Or are you going to go? God, you are so gracious and you are so loving. I am running to you and I will lay down everything because you told me to.
Pastor
Right?
Jeff
He has done the work, so stop trying to fix it yourselves.
Pastor
Give it up.
Jeff
Give it up. Don't let your pride dictate everything. Lean into God because he's done the work and he wants to lead you in paths of righteousness.
Pastor
Right?
Jeff
Well, let's look at the reflection here real quick.
Pastor
And that'll be where we end and
Jeff
then we'll continue next week. So when you worry about what others think, you are granting their opinion. A status that belongs only to God. The power to define your identity, safety or worth. What creature? A spouse, a boss, a friend, a
Pastor
pastor, a church community. You name it.
Jeff
Have you allowed to define your value? Let your value be found only in God, guys. Only in Christ. As those who are filled with the spirit know who it is that fills you.
Pastor
It is the Spirit of God. The spirit of Christ now indwells you.
Jeff
You are a sacred place. God's grace has done amazing things so that we don't have to exchange the
Pastor
truth for a lie. But now we can lean into the truth. And the truth will set you free.
Jeff
Because the truth is Jesus. Amen. Okay, let me pray and then you
Pastor
guys can get moving.
Jeff
Father. Lord, we thank you so much for this morning and for what you've done here. Lord, I pray that if you there be anybody who is looking to the worship of men, the worship of things, Lord, who? Anybody who has exchanged the truth for a lie, Lord. Break it and may they freely give it to you. Repent of it. Confess and know that they are forgiven in Christ by your grace, Lord. Lord, we thank you and we praise you. Praise you in Jesus name, Amen.
Host: Jeff Mesker
Date: July 18, 2026
This episode dives deep into the concept known as “the fear of man”—sometimes called people-pleasing or, in psychological terms, codependency. Host Jeff Mesker explores what the fear of man means from a biblical perspective, how it manifests in daily life, the spiritual dangers it poses, and how believers can shift from seeking human approval to seeking the approval of God. Using personal stories, Scripture, and insights from Christian leaders like John Piper and Lou Priolo, Jeff challenges listeners to examine their own motivations and to pursue transformation through God’s truth.
People-Pleasing and Codependency
Biblical Framing: The “Fear of Man”
John Piper’s Christian Hedonism
“You need to go from the lesser to the greater. So stop thinking that the lesser is the greater.”
— Jeff, summarizing Piper ([05:47 - 05:54])
Lou Priolo: The Bondage of People Pleasing
“Trying to please thousands of different people is an impossible, exhausting, and self-defeating task.”
— Jeff, summarizing Priolo ([07:06 - 07:31])
Proverbs 29:25
The True Motivation: Who Are You Pleasing?
Romans 1:25
Motivation Check
Pride and Blame
Identity in Christ
“We are bound to the fear of man because the approval and acceptance of people feel more satisfying, safe, and real than the promises of God.”
— John Piper via Jeff ([03:58 - 04:07])
“Trying to please thousands of different people is an impossible, exhausting, and self-defeating task.”
— Lou Priolo via Jeff ([07:06 - 07:31])
“You want to be accepted all the time. So you’ll do almost anything to get accepted by people.”
— Jeff ([02:48 - 02:50])
“The diagnosis: the fear of man is idolatry.”
— Jeff ([12:37])
“If we’re striving to please man, we’re no longer following after Christ.”
— Jeff ([13:39])
“When you worry about what others think, you are granting their opinion a status that belongs only to God: the power to define your identity, safety, or worth.”
— Jeff ([18:38 - 18:56])
Jeff closes by urging listeners to recognize the trap of seeking acceptance from others, to repent where needed, and to allow their value and identity to be rooted solely in God’s love and truth. The episode is both an exhortation and a practical guide to moving from people-pleasing and the fear of man to true spiritual freedom in Christ.
Final Reflection Quote:
“Let your value be found only in God, guys. Only in Christ. As those who are filled with the Spirit, know who it is that fills you. It is the Spirit of God.” ([18:56 - 19:16])
