I do, too. And, like, sometimes we do talk about scammers who are on the lam. So, like, if they're still on the lam, that's kind of cunty to me. I'm like, okay, you better run from the law.

Oh, I think you know, but I'll tell you. So you know there's a scam where you get a text message, right? And it's like you just drove through a toll. Click on this link and pay, you know, the. Whatever it is, the $20, whatever it is, the fee.

They're like, we scan your license plate, bitch, we got you. So give us the money.

So here's what's crazy. I was actually on a toll road when I received the toll text. And it was. And speaking about, you know, punching down, it was during the fires, so we.

Were literally like the ultimate punch down.

Were you evacuating?

We were evacuating.

So fucked up.

There's not a door. Scammers are looking for a window. So even during COVID they were setting up a tent that they got from Home Depot and putting Q top like Q tip swabs up people's noses and tell them they were testing for Covid for $200. Anytime there's an opportunity for scammers to gain, they're always opening new windows. That's why scamming will never go away. It was the second oldest profession.

And there were people, there were the, like, COVID testing.

You got selling it and then you got scamming it.

Right, that's right.

[Liz Feldman]

There were people who were COVID testing just in a booth that was like, it kind of looked like a scam, but people were so desperate. But then there was also that like major COVID testing place. Where were we?

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Clear. Hell. Or whatever the hell it was called.

Yes.

That also turned out to be a scam.

They had a same day clear.

It was same day.

It was same day health.

And it turned out like full scam.

Half, same day health. You know, health has never come at the same day.

Exactly. Well, you were paying to get that same day.

I go to the doctor and they like, oh, it's going to be a week till you get your blood same day.

That should have been our first clue.

But they were basically just telling some people, yeah, you're negative. But they never ran their.

They were basically magic aid following.

All everybody wanted was a negative. And anything that you're getting tested for where the positive is bad, all you want is a negative.

Yeah, I will pay hundreds of dollars to get that same day negative. That was apparently meaningless. Meaningless. Anyway, sorry.

No, no, that's so, so you're on the freeway, you're, you're, you're evading the foul like the fire.

I'm evad. I have my 2 year old in the backseat.

You know, the baby, high stakes.

The baby, the baby's there. I mean, it was like a high stakes, you know, high anxiety situation. Then we get the text and I honestly felt relieved because then, now we don't have to like fish for the website and figure it out and pay it. And so I wasn't thinking clearly.

Obviously, it's a despot meter. You're in a desperate situation and that's when you're least likely to make like that pause. I always say in life, no matter what's happening, you at least have 45 seconds. You know, if it's like, oh, we have to pull the plug on a loved one, you got 45 seconds, ain't gonna die. 45 seconds. Like if, if it's a situation where they're telling you you're in dire strengths, you at least have 45 seconds to process slowly all the information that they've given you and decide if this is true or not. But when you're in a high intense pressure situation like this fight or flight, all the time, you're just already just solving problems as quickly as you can because you don't wanna surmount more problems because you Already have huge problems.

And so this is where I should have known that I was being scammed. I put my credit card in.

Oh, yeah.

And they're. Oh, sorry, there's an issue. Try another card. Oh, guys, I want to run screaming out of this building because I'm so embarrassed that I fell for this.

[Lacy Mosley]

No, listen. This is a place where we erase shame. Because when people get ashamed of the scams that they've fallen for, they don't share the information. And then those scammers continue doing what they're doing and proliferating the same plot and scheme. So this is a safe space. I've been scam of. My listeners have been scammed. We try to avoid scams in the future. This is no shade. If you watch my television show, you'll realize it's all about erasing shame. We don't like. You're good. You're honestly being a blessing right now to people.

So I appreciate. So I really do. I just like, you know, again, that Brooklyn girl in me is like, how did I fall?

So then when a fire is threatening your home and you running away with your baby and your partner. Yes, that is a rife time for scamming. Honestly, they just got lucky. Cause I'm pretty sure they probably sent that text out to a lot of different people. And so they're fishing. And so they just got lucky because there was a tragedy happening. A lot of my friends and family, like, people lost their homes, lost everything. And people were like, oh, well, the rich people lost their homes. Like, eat the rich. And yes, like, let's put some tahin on the mega rich. But there was a lot of people who lost homes that they work for who are not out here siphoning the money out of corporations and taking government welfare and ruining our lives. There was a lot of people who just lost their homes because they're in the wrong area. And now the insurance scam is that they won't even cover homes in that area.

Exactly.

The Places you need the insurance the most. The girls are like, actually, we can't do that because this is a Ponzi scheme. And y' all not Ponzi. And hard enough because y' all keep wanting to get the money out of the Ponzi scheme.

But so you're, you're driving away. You guys, two year old, you got your partner and they hit you up. They say, okay, wrong credit card. This one's not working. We need another card. What happens?

Well, I think you see where this is going, guys. I put in another credit card. That one also. Now I'm panicked. Now I'm like, I'll never be able to pay this toll because I'm a schmuck who is falling for this scam. I send the phone to my wife and I go try one of yours.

Oh, my. So you literally just kept feeding every credit card that you.

So they got greedy with you. They were like, oh, send another and send another one.

That's ballsy as a scammer too. To not be like, okay, we got one credit card, let's get in and get out. But if they're fishing.

But here's the thing. If they're fishing, they're probably not working alone. And if they have multiple cars, they're going to probably try to hit them all at once.

I mean, it's just a ballsy move is all I say.

And here's the thing. Like, that's not even a good scam. Like, come on. That's the best they can do.

Honestly, it low key kind of is because gift cards are untraceable. So once they have the money on a gift card, then that's cash everywhere else that they go, and it's not traced back of the car that they stole it from.

This does not make you not smart. And the thing is, is, like, people attribute intellect to so many stupid things. I personally think that everyone is smart in a different way. And I don't know why we've all subscribed to trying to be smart in the same way. That's not how it works. Look, I am smart in the spaces of entertainment or writing or things like that. But you asked me to look under a sink and fix a motherfucking plumbing. Guess what? I'm a fucking dummy. But you know what? There's somebody else who can do that, who's smart. You asked me, like, how to build a house. I don't know how to build a house. I can't roof nothing. But there are geniuses who know how to do that. I think that everyone has to find their own lane and find confidence in the fact that everything that we do all contributes to the world. And wherever your genius is, is where your genius lies. But there's a lot of people when it comes to scams, especially rich people or people honestly of any class, caliber who think if I got scammed, that means that I was tricked and that I'm stupid. No, we all have needs. That's a part of being alive. If you were born out of your mama coochie and they sat you on the sidewalk, guess how long you will live? Not very long. We all need help.

Think about the fact that like those types of charges always come in the mail. There are places where if you get an HOV lane and then you don't got nobody in that second spot, you don't got a baby, you don't got a family, they will take a picture of your license plate and charge you if you're speeding. There are certain red lights normally in Richer neighborhoods that have cameras that take a picture of your license plate if you go through a red or if you're speeding. Right. Those always come through the mail. So if anybody is texting you, that's not serious. That's very unserious. The DMV does not test. Think about how long it takes when you go to the dmv, you pull your little fucking number. You don't even get a sandwich at the end. You pull your motherfucking number like you're at the deli. And then you sit next to the people you would never see in your life for hours. And they got the worst shit on the tv. If they got a TV at all. And then you get up to the counter and you're dealing with the most fed up grandmother you've ever met.

Okay, so when I was in high school, this is an old. This is why this is like the most shameful scam is because I, by the way, coming in, you said late millennial, I would describe myself as early Gen X. So picture it's the 1940s. But no, it was an in person scam when I was in high school.

I like take my headphones in and they were like, hey, this is so embarrassing. I have not talked about this in 1,000 years. They're like, hey, do you. How you doing today? Oh, boy.

I'm like, whatever you want, I'll give it to you. No, they were like, how are you doing? I'm like, I'm good. What's up? And they're like, so do you. They're like, do you like magazines? And I said, I remember the scam. Do you remember the scam?

I never even heard of the scam. And I haven't heard of the.

Do you like magazines? And I was like, love them. Can I? Yes, please. They were like, we're selling discount magazine. And this is also again, another time and place when, like, I did used to love getting a magazine, a Rolling Stone.

They're like. So it's like $25, and you could pay cash right now for these subscriptions. I was like, I don't know. And then they're like, well, are you hungry or thirsty? What if my face came up when you. I'm pretty close. So, anyway, the point is, by the end of the soda, they were like. I felt like I was in so deep that now it would be rude for me to not buy this bundle of.

And that's what they were hoping, too. They give a little to get more.

They are giving a little to get more. And so I also, again, teenage girl. I don't know how much cash I had on me. Maybe. I think I was like, I have. This is what should have really been the final nail in the coffin of the scam was they were like. So it's like $25. Adjust for inflation. Again, it's 1950.

Yeah. 25 went along a long way.

And again, I'm a child But I was like, oh, I only have 20. And they were like, that's fine, that's fine.

Snatch it real quick.

And then I. And then they're like, okay, have a great day. Bye. Bye. And then I walk home. And as I'm walking, I'm like, did.

Okay. So then I'm like, oh my God. I'm like, I don't have a great feeling. And then I get home and I'm, I get to my parents and I'm like, can I get her? Can I take a temp from you guys on what just happened to me? And they're like, what? And I tell them, I'm like, I, I, I think I just subscribed to a couple magazines. And they were like, what? And as I told them, they truly were like, you, you dumb fuck. Like, who have we raised that we. She fell for such a truly. I mean, this makes toll roads look like nothing.

You were a child. I was 47.

Okay, that's true. But I will say then horror. Meet my parents.

But the technology had advanced. These people were reaching out to your personal divine. They were, you know what I mean? These people were reaching out to her on the streets. Typically this is a door to door scam. They usually go knocking on doors. But they saw you cute, walking, listening to your nirv. And they were like, she, she likes magazines.

I did like, I mean, they just knew I liked magazines. And then I will. The end of the story is just very sadly, I would say for like the next three months.

Oh, you were waiting for the magazines?

I was waiting a little bit for.

The magazines to show up. And honey, they didn't, they didn't show up. Would you believe? Not a one.

But also I probably guessed. Were those people kind of young to you? They must have been around an age.

That you felt comfortable. I mean, they were probably 24, 25.

Yeah. So they're around an age that you feel comfortable. I bet you they probably were being scammed themselves out here. Hustle magazines. And maybe they wised up and realized like, if we take cash from people with all of these legitimate things that we have that the scam company gave us, then we could just keep the cash and move on. And they weren't looking for that much cash.

We'll see if we like them or we hate them. Much of this story is based on the Netflix documentary Con Mum. So we're gonna put that out there.

Wonderful. So let's get started. A glamorous elderly jetsetter claimed to be a British pastry chef's long lost mother. Showering him with money and gifts he love. He left his life behind to follow her around the world. But he ended up getting taken for a ride, literally and figuratively. Uh oh, this is not. Yep.

So the pastry chef, lots of people who know Michelin star pastry chef Graham Hornigold. It's. It says Horny Gold. Not a great name. I mean, you horny for the gold.

I bet they're Junior Bake off people. So he's on the show and he's like. And, you know, Junior Bake off really was blowing up definitely during COVID too. But this is, like, so 2007. He was already established. So he was born in Germany on an army base and moved to England with his father and stepmother when he was young. His dad never talked about his biological mom or anything else, really. So all Graham had to go on was his birth certificate, which said his mother's name was half Patton Hornigold, formerly Maud. So I'm interested here because the mom had the same last name that he does. Yeah.

That also has bummed me right away.

So were they married? Like, was the dad married to her? Or, like, it does say, formerly Mahamud, which means maybe the mom was married to the man at some point? I will say a dad who takes custody of his child probably would not tell you their mom's information, because when does that ever happen? Men do not take custody of their kids. And if they do, that really feels. Feels like a punishment to them. Women do it all the time. And, yeah, listen, if you're out there and you listen to this, or you have a partner who's Whose daddy ran away, which is probably a lot of y' all, please tell them to stop blaming the parent who stayed, because that's the only who stayed. Y' all making up all types of whim ass dreams about the person who left your ass, and that's all you know for a fact. But then the person who stayed. You want to get mad at them. You want to hate women. What's going on? They stayed and fed you. They could have left you at the fire department. Be serious.

Yes, but the reverse is true here. In this case, it's his father who raised him and the mother.

But I feel like mothers, and this is obviously going to be like a Broad stroke. But a lot of mothers whose father figure for the child leaves the picture, they typically don't talk shit about the father who left. And they. Now, I'm not saying that of all mothers, but sure, we're racist in my toll of reality of a broad stroke, like, they're the person who stayed. And if the other person decide the dad's not, like, wants to listen. I've said this before.

It was years ago. But I'm staying with my broad stroke generalization here for a reason. There's even advertisement that appears in LA sometimes. That is literally billboards and on bus benches and shit that says take time to be a dad.

But, like, again, this is one situation.

So in 2020, right after the pandemic started, Graham was quarantined with his romantic and business partner, Heather. A lot of y' all got married that way. The quarantine happened, and y' all were like, let's make it for real. And then I had to go to a lot of weddings in 2022.

Um, so they're quarantined. Right. Heather's also a pastry chef and a native of New Zealand. New Zealand. They were expecting their first baby. Baby. Everything was going really well in life, and it seemed like the final missing piece was completing the puzzle when he got a random email from a woman named Dion, or Dion, who said she was his mother and wanted to reconnect. And now this is why I'll say my sweeping generalization Works here. Because if your mother's not in your life, like you will. I mean this is true for fathers too. But like if there's a parent who's not in your life, I'll say that if they want to reach out, you will be open to it. Even if you're a Michelin star chef and you pop in and you on tv, you still want to know where you came from.

Again, I fell for magazines.

So a mom is like, understand the.

Like, yeah, the mermaid allure. An email that's like, I'm your long lost mom.

I don't know why I feel like I have to defend this guy, but I will say that some. A detail that you do learn in the documentary which doesn't give anything away just yet, is that his father did not treat him well.

Can I just say while we're on this. And again, broad stroke and I'm sorry cause I might be offending people in the room. I don't love when grandparents decide they want like a cool name that's not grandma or grandpa. I. I just feel like sometimes broad strokes, it feels like an attempt to like not be a grandma or a grandma to not be old, to not be old. It's like, you know what? Instead of calling me grandma, call me Cher. And it's like you're still the grandmother. Okay, sorry.

And a lot of times the scammers cut me off because I'll be too engaged. And they'd be like, nah, she's on to it. And I'm like, damn it, come on, Talk back to me. I want to know. But, yeah, I understand going on the ride for a little bit. But if something seems weird, just like we said, 45 seconds. You got more than 45 seconds in this situation. Just let that shit rock. So Graham asked her if she knew his middle name, a trick question because he doesn't have one, and what her maiden name was on his birth certificate. She got the answers right. So he started to believe this could really be her. Now, let's not forget that some of this stuff is public record, Graham. And if you're on television and you've been in the public eye, people will go into your details, your address, your phone number. Like, if you are someone who's in the public eye, please buy your homes in a trust. Because if your real name is on the home, it is public record and people will know where you live.

Remember, those were gifts that Deon gave. And now all of a sudden, they're gifts that he. He has to pay for. That's not how gifts work.

So you gave them a gift that was also a $7,000 burden. So a lot of these teachers ended up selling the cars or, like, trying to accrue money to pay it off. But it's like, they should have paid for the gift tax along with the cars instead of.

You just need to pay the taxes and fees. Also, you're my son. So now she's roping in an emotional level that obviously would make people ignore a few red flags, especially if they have trauma around parentage. Right. And just became a parent. And like, Graham, now I'm gonna have to knock you on. Like, you had parents who were absentee or who did not fuck with you. And instead of when you had a fresh baby, changing the course of that and, you know, ending the generational trauma right there, you're now running after your own trauma, and your baby mama and your baby are alone somewhere while you accrue debt chasing your fake mama. At no point did you think to get a blood test or nothing.

Because. Because if you long for having a parent love you, there's a deep abandonment that I don't understand. Because even though my parents were together when I was conceived, like, I have relationships with all four of my parents, and they all love me very much. So I don't have that want for that. But I would imagine having that want from that is like a deep lingering wound. Absolutely. And if you think that someone's pouring all this life and love into you, you wanna believe that they're doing it for the right reasons. Because it kind of soul ties into who you are as a human being.

She told him so. Remember? She told him that she was his mother. Now he's looking at DA. He's like, let's get a DNA. Like a DNA test. Right? @ this point, he's like, this woman has scammed me. She's taking advantage of me and my family. I want to be done with this. Let's do a DNA test. He should have done this in the beginning, but he did not. So now after he's 400,000 USD in, and his wife Heather is mad at him and she not leaving New Zealand with their baby. That last part was not a New Zealand accent. But, you know, we tried.

He's like, let's do the DNA test. And in the case I'm drumrolling of Dion Mahmoud.

And the paternity of Graham, the DNA of the test says that Dion was not. Not the mother. She is his mother.

His father, you know, his father did raise him, but his father was kind of a POS and wasn't great. And all he wanted was.

Well, I mean, Heather tried to do her due diligence.

She went to the police. But Deon couldn't be charged because she was truly family and Graham did know where his money was going. But after the documentary Con Mum aired on Netflix this year, Dion was charged with five counts of fraud against other men in Singapore. She's also accused of deceiving others into transferring money into her accounts. And that's where the little bit of money that she had, which is paying for the hotels and stuff and the.

Down payments to other men who are not her son. But then she also did it to her son.

[Jessi Klein]

Yeah.

Because she said she would claim that the funds were needed as legal fees for the opening of new bank accounts. Because, remember, she's still doing that Brunei scam. Right. She sought their sympathy by saying she was terminally ill and vowed to reimburse them through her Brunei inheritance. Graham emailed the Brunei royals family, like, their PR account and said. And the family's PR account, the Brunei family, said that they had never heard of her.

Not shocked by that. But, like, to go this far to, like, scam your own son that you haven't even been in his life. And so that's already you taking a huge part of his humanity by not being a mother to him. And then to spin the block.

And the only reason he's doing all this stuff in such an exponential amount like a time is because of the desperation meter of like you're going to die soon. You have three cancers. He's trying to spend as much time with you as possible. And you over here running it up on your own son. That is deplorable as hell.
