Y' all know how Amazon was just previously used to, you know, go on and get something very specific, like, you want some earrings that look like Michelle Obama or something, like, just very specific that you can't buy in a store? Well, now, Amazon is a great place to get all your essentials. You can get your toiletries. You can have them scheduled to deliver your toiletries, which I do, because I be running out of toilet paper, and that's very embarrassing. Like, to be on the toilet and you don't have no paper. Like, that's. That's very sad and embarrassing. Can't believe I told y' all that. But next time you run out of coffee or realize you out of light bulbs, don't be in the dark. Amazon has you covered. Save every day with deals from Amazon. Y' all know when your hair kind of gets, like, greasy and. And you need to wash it, but you don't have time to wash it? Enter Batiste Light. Batiste Light blends in seamlessly with your hair, leaving none of that white residue. And your hair looks clean and it feels clean. Okay? I like Batiste Light because whenever my hair is feeling, like, greasy or oily, you know, when I've wrapped it too many times or whatever, I can put that in my hair and it kind of wakes it back up, you know what I mean? Without it looking white or powdery or, you know, like, I just put a bunch of baby powder in my hair or something. You know what I mean? Buy Petite's Light Dry Shampoo online or in store at your nearest retailer. Scams Cuns. Robbery and Fraud. Scam. Ca. Robbery and Fraud. Scam Goddess. What's poppin, Congregation? It's your girl, Lacy Mosley, AKA Scam Goddess, back with another installment of the comedy podcast all about robbery, fraud, and those who practice it. Sometimes we love them, sometimes we hate them, but. Congregation, stand on up in the pews. Amen. Amen. Amen. Who got their white gloves on?
Jessi Klein
Okay. Cute.
Lacy Mosley
Cute. I hope you didn't get them off from one of them China websites because you paid tariffs on them gloves. All right, now, y' all already know that I'm. What? Yes. Excited, Elated. We have two guests. Not one, but two Gal boss guests on the show. One is a writer, actress, standup comedian, and producer. You might know her from inside. Amy Schumer. Yeah. Dead to Me and Transparent. And the other is an American comedian, writer, producer, and director. She's best known as the creator and executive producer of the Netflix dark comedy series Dead to Me and no Good Deed. All of these shows are so popping. I know you've heard of all of them. I don't even have to really ew together now. Look, now they're. Now they're getting, like, Thanos and collecting all the Infinity Stones, and they're working together on a new podcast called Here to Make Friends, A show where the hosts celebrate long standing friendships and attempt to make new ones in adulthood, which we all know is very hard. We don't have a playground, girl. And let me tell you, that is not always so easy. Right? Like I'm just saying. But I hope that I can be like a new friend with you both. Oh, my God.
Liz Feldman
This is the dream.
Lacy Mosley
This is my scam. This is my scam. Oh, we're friends.
Liz Feldman
This is a long convict.
Jessi Klein
It's a short con. Just be our friend.
Lacy Mosley
Just be our friend. I am in. I'm down. Okay, the con is over. We were kikiing before this, and I'm like, can I just tell y' all a little bit of my trauma before we start? Like, y' all just have friendly faces. Y' all got me.
Liz Feldman
We're here for a trauma boss.
Lacy Mosley
I couldn't be more excited to welcome the gal bosses to the congregation. Okay, listen, we got new. They can wear hats in the church. Okay? We're talking front pew wearing hats. Baddie bosses. Okay. Our new welcoming doors usher in Jessi Klein and Liz Feldman to the show. Thank you to the congregation. Yes.
Liz Feldman
Oh, my gosh, we're so happy to be here.
Jessi Klein
Let me first just thank you for saying that I'm American.
Liz Feldman
I know Liz got identity qualified as the American comedian.
Jessi Klein
You know what?
Lacy Mosley
Are you Canadian?
Jessi Klein
God, no. I wish I was, but I think what maybe happened is that was off my Wikipedia page. I'm gonna blame my own.
Lacy Mosley
Wait, where are you from?
Jessi Klein
Oh, I'm American, but it was just funny to be called.
Liz Feldman
You say that I was an American comedian, but I too, am American. But the point is, we all would love to be Canadian right now, but.
Jessi Klein
I wish I was. Was Canadian.
Lacy Mosley
Okay, I'm confused. Not you actually being American and then being like, well, why would you describe me that way? When I go, the girls don't need to know I'm American unless I'm so keeping. Then they can know I'm American because I'll beat the French's asses. Y' all know I have beef with the French. I, I, I have let go of my Brazilian beef. Y' all are fine, but the French, y' all can get it.
Jessi Klein
Oh, wow.
Lacy Mosley
What the French do They're rude for no reason. Everybody knows on this podcast, like, it's annoying. Like, be rude with a purpose if you gotta get somewhere, if you. You're lost or you're tired. Okay, I get that you're. You're just being blunt, but French people are rude for no reason. They wanna hurt your feelings. They look deep in your eyes while they insult you for no reason. And I'm like, I'm sorry.
Liz Feldman
Like, I'm with you on the French beef.
Lacy Mosley
You're making me wanna do violence to you. And I guess that's the American in me. But, like, don't do that.
Jessi Klein
I'm just afraid to say anything about any foreign country in case I need to seek refuge there.
Liz Feldman
I know we are gonna be trying to get our visas.
Lacy Mosley
So rude. They're not gonna let us in over there anyway. And I had a nasty coat. I had on a cute outfit. I was eating them bitches up and they were doing that.
Liz Feldman
Still giving you the eye? The evil eye?
Lacy Mosley
No, I'm just gonna go live in Ireland if I have to. Listen, white people who know about struggle, those are my favorite white people, okay? That potato pen happened, and they ain't let that shit go ever, Period.
Liz Feldman
They're holding on.
Lacy Mosley
Sometimes I'd be at work, they serve us poke bowls, and it'd be some potatoes on the side. I'm like, why are potatoes on the side of the poke? They serve it with every meal. Breakfast you got. I got fruit and oatmeal. They're like, here's some potatoes. I didn't ask for these. They were like, no, they love them. We got potatoes now, and you're gonna eat them with every meal.
Liz Feldman
They love them so much.
Lacy Mosley
So, Liz, Jess, we always ask to start this podcast. What is your relationship to scams? It could be anything. You love them, you hate them, you've run a scam, you've been in a sc. Pass the statute of limitations. We don't want the F to be in the eye knocking on your door. But it could be anything. And either of you can start.
Jessi Klein
I mean, my relationship is tight, I would say, because I am into a scam.
Lacy Mosley
You linked up.
Liz Feldman
Okay.
Jessi Klein
I just. I like a white collar crime. I really do.
Lacy Mosley
Okay.
Jessi Klein
Maybe it's because I grew up in Brooklyn, you know, in sort of mafia country, but I do. I just appreciate anybody that can get away with something. I don't know why. I just do. I like when people get away with shit.
Lacy Mosley
I do, too. And, like, sometimes we do talk about scammers who are on the lam. So, like, if they're still on the lam, that's kind of cunty to me. I'm like, okay, you better run from the law.
Jessi Klein
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
As long as you were doing something that wasn't harming everyday people.
Jessi Klein
Exactly. I'm talking about non violent, you know.
Lacy Mosley
Sort of non violent, but also non. Like punching down. Like if you're scamming people who really need their money. But if you're scamming corporations, we all know they robbing us.
Liz Feldman
Yeah. Scam of equal or above. A scam of equal or above.
Jessi Klein
Never a scam down that I'm interested in. But I. But I also have been victim to a scam which was less fun. And.
Lacy Mosley
And what was that?
Jessi Klein
Well, I was one of those toll.
Lacy Mosley
Okay, tall bitches is crazy.
Jessi Klein
You know, I mean, but here's. They got me so good. Because it was.
Lacy Mosley
Wait, now we.
Liz Feldman
You gotta.
Lacy Mosley
Before you get to how they got you, I need you to define what a toll beach is.
Jessi Klein
Oh, I think you know, but I'll tell you. So you know there's a scam where you get a text message, right? And it's like you just drove through a toll. Click on this link and pay, you know, the. Whatever it is, the $20, whatever it is, the fee.
Lacy Mosley
They're like, we scan your license plate, bitch, we got you. So give us the money.
Jessi Klein
So here's what's crazy. I was actually on a toll road when I received the toll text. And it was. And speaking about, you know, punching down, it was during the fires, so we.
Liz Feldman
Were literally like the ultimate punch down.
Lacy Mosley
Were you evacuating?
Jessi Klein
We were evacuating.
Liz Feldman
So fucked up.
Jessi Klein
So go for it.
Lacy Mosley
Okay, but. But is, though, if you were evacuating, then the least of my words would be the motherfucking toll people. I'd be like, y' all. But, like, I have a home.
Jessi Klein
But we were on such, like, high alert, my wife and I both, that when I, she, you know, I was like, all right, I'm gonna. I'm gonna take the toll road. And, you know, you just. Here, don't forget to pay it on the website. And I don't, you know, like, I.
Liz Feldman
Like that this is being screamed as you're fleeing from flames. Don't forget to pay on the website.
Jessi Klein
Exactly.
Lacy Mosley
That's a toll. Your house might be burdened down, but you still worried about the.
Jessi Klein
And thank God my house was okay, but.
Lacy Mosley
Thank God. But it's wild to me, though, that I was not in LA when this was happening. I'm still like, I hope My house is there when I get back. You are leaving from your house. You very much know it might be in danger. Thank God it wasn't.
Jessi Klein
It was okay.
Lacy Mosley
And you were spared. But you still are responsible enough citizen to be like, oh, we can't have this toll. Well, here's the thing.
Liz Feldman
So Liz. Liz is such a responsible good citizen.
Jessi Klein
I love a scam. I would never do one. I don't have the conscience for it. I'm. I'm. My, like, neutral state is high anxiety, you know, I can't like, get away with anything because I won't sleep at night. And my wife, more so like, she. I describe her as the most decent person I know. She's like, entirely too decent.
Lacy Mosley
2 decents marrying each other. I know.
Liz Feldman
Good plus good equals incredible.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah, it is.
Jessi Klein
I apologize.
Lacy Mosley
Although I'm like, I need, like, devious. If you're out there and you're devious.
Jessi Klein
Devious, that's cuz you're a high millennial.
Lacy Mosley
You know what? I knew that's just not gonna let that go. I knew she was not gonna let that shit go. It is specific. I'm sorry. I was a baby during 911. I was. I knew the. What happened, though. I was watching Telemundo. They tell you everything. If you ever wrote the real tea. Telemundo.
Liz Feldman
Telemundo.
Lacy Mosley
But. So they hit you up and they're like, hey, girly pop, you just ran this toll. You owe us $20.
Jessi Klein
And I mean, look, literally, I had just been on the toll road. In fairness.
Lacy Mosley
Fairness to you, within a fish, they're not gonna catch everyone, but they know some of y' all gonna be on the toll road.
Jessi Klein
Well, they caught this fucking guppy.
Liz Feldman
This guppy got fished on that toll road.
Lacy Mosley
I don't think that's guppy. Like, that's also them knowing that there is a tragedy happening where everyone' and.
Liz Feldman
No one's double checking. People are not double checking.
Lacy Mosley
There's not a door. Scammers are looking for a window. So even during COVID they were setting up a tent that they got from Home Depot and putting Q top like Q tip swabs up people's noses and tell them they were testing for Covid for $200. Anytime there's an opportunity for scammers to gain, they're always opening new windows. That's why scamming will never go away. It was the second oldest profession.
Liz Feldman
And there were people, there were the, like, COVID testing.
Lacy Mosley
You got selling it and then you got scamming it.
Jessi Klein
Right, that's right.
Liz Feldman
There were people who were COVID testing just in a booth that was like, it kind of looked like a scam, but people were so desperate. But then there was also that like major COVID testing place. Where were we?
Jessi Klein
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Liz Feldman
Clear. Hell. Or whatever the hell it was called.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Liz Feldman
That also turned out to be a scam.
Lacy Mosley
They had a same day clear.
Liz Feldman
No, no, no.
Jessi Klein
It was same day.
Lacy Mosley
It was same day health.
Liz Feldman
And it turned out like full scam.
Lacy Mosley
Half, same day health. You know, health has never come at the same day.
Liz Feldman
Exactly. Well, you were paying to get that same day.
Jessi Klein
You certainly were.
Lacy Mosley
I go to the doctor and they like, oh, it's going to be a week till you get your blood same day.
Jessi Klein
That should have been our first clue.
Liz Feldman
That should have been the first.
Jessi Klein
But they were basically just telling some people, yeah, you're negative. But they never ran their.
Liz Feldman
They were basically magic aid following.
Lacy Mosley
All everybody wanted was a negative. And anything that you're getting tested for where the positive is bad, all you want is a negative.
Liz Feldman
Yeah, I will pay hundreds of dollars to get that same day negative. That was apparently meaningless. Meaningless. Anyway, sorry.
Lacy Mosley
No, no, that's so, so you're on the freeway, you're, you're, you're evading the foul like the fire.
Jessi Klein
I'm evad. I have my 2 year old in the backseat.
Lacy Mosley
You know, the baby, high stakes.
Jessi Klein
The baby, the baby's there. I mean, it was like a high stakes, you know, high anxiety situation. Then we get the text and I honestly felt relieved because then, now we don't have to like fish for the website and figure it out and pay it. And so I wasn't thinking clearly.
Lacy Mosley
Obviously, it's a despot meter. You're in a desperate situation and that's when you're least likely to make like that pause. I always say in life, no matter what's happening, you at least have 45 seconds. You know, if it's like, oh, we have to pull the plug on a loved one, you got 45 seconds, ain't gonna die. 45 seconds. Like if, if it's a situation where they're telling you you're in dire strengths, you at least have 45 seconds to process slowly all the information that they've given you and decide if this is true or not. But when you're in a high intense pressure situation like this fight or flight, all the time, you're just already just solving problems as quickly as you can because you don't wanna surmount more problems because you Already have huge problems.
Jessi Klein
Exactly, Exactly. Thank you for understanding.
Liz Feldman
Yes.
Jessi Klein
And so this is where I should have known that I was being scammed. I put my credit card in.
Lacy Mosley
Oh, yeah.
Jessi Klein
And they're. Oh, sorry, there's an issue. Try another card. Oh, guys, I want to run screaming out of this building because I'm so embarrassed that I fell for this.
Lacy Mosley
No, listen. This is a place where we erase shame. Because when people get ashamed of the scams that they've fallen for, they don't share the information. And then those scammers continue doing what they're doing and proliferating the same plot and scheme. So this is a safe space. I've been scam of. My listeners have been scammed. We try to avoid scams in the future. This is no shade. If you watch my television show, you'll realize it's all about erasing shame. We don't like. You're good. You're honestly being a blessing right now to people.
Jessi Klein
So I appreciate. So I really do. I just like, you know, again, that Brooklyn girl in me is like, how did I fall?
Lacy Mosley
I feel like. Because you were running away from fire.
Jessi Klein
Thank you. I know.
Liz Feldman
But I do feel like, as a New York City person, which we both are.
Lacy Mosley
Yes.
Liz Feldman
There is that feeling of like, nobody fucks with us.
Jessi Klein
Exactly.
Liz Feldman
We don't fall for this fucking shit.
Jessi Klein
Yeah.
Liz Feldman
And yet.
Jessi Klein
And yet here it is.
Lacy Mosley
But have y' all realized the other side? You don't expose yourself to much of, like, the shit because you don't engage. So then how would you know what the shit looks like? Cause you're not engaging. So then when a fire is threatening your home and you running away with your baby and your partner. Yes, that is a rife time for scamming. Honestly, they just got lucky. Cause I'm pretty sure they probably sent that text out to a lot of different people. And so they're fishing. And so they just got lucky because there was a tragedy happening. A lot of my friends and family, like, people lost their homes, lost everything. And people were like, oh, well, the rich people lost their homes. Like, eat the rich. And yes, like, let's put some tahin on the mega rich. But there was a lot of people who lost homes that they work for who are not out here siphoning the money out of corporations and taking government welfare and ruining our lives. There was a lot of people who just lost their homes because they're in the wrong area. And now the insurance scam is that they won't even cover homes in that area.
Jessi Klein
Exactly.
Lacy Mosley
The Places you need the insurance the most. The girls are like, actually, we can't do that because this is a Ponzi scheme. And y' all not Ponzi. And hard enough because y' all keep wanting to get the money out of the Ponzi scheme.
Jessi Klein
Exactly.
Lacy Mosley
But so you're, you're driving away. You guys, two year old, you got your partner and they hit you up. They say, okay, wrong credit card. This one's not working. We need another card. What happens?
Jessi Klein
Well, I think you see where this is going, guys. I put in another credit card. That one also. Now I'm panicked. Now I'm like, I'll never be able to pay this toll because I'm a schmuck who is falling for this scam. I send the phone to my wife and I go try one of yours.
Liz Feldman
Oh, my. So you literally just kept feeding every credit card that you.
Lacy Mosley
So they got greedy with you. They were like, oh, send another and send another one.
Liz Feldman
That's ballsy as a scammer too. To not be like, okay, we got one credit card, let's get in and get out. But if they're fishing.
Lacy Mosley
But here's the thing. If they're fishing, they're probably not working alone. And if they have multiple cars, they're going to probably try to hit them all at once.
Liz Feldman
I mean, it's just a ballsy move is all I say.
Jessi Klein
So ballsy. And. And so you have to be.
Lacy Mosley
Scamming is like being at the casino. When you hot, you hot. You got a bed.
Liz Feldman
Cherry, Cherry, Cherry.
Lacy Mosley
What is happening?
Liz Feldman
You know what it is? I'm not smart enough to play any other games. Like, I don't know how to play, like, do any gambling. So when I.
Lacy Mosley
There's too many episodes about me teaching people to gamble at this point. But I, But I could take you to Vegas and make you want.
Liz Feldman
Now that we're friends. Now that we're friends.
Lacy Mosley
Vegas, baby. Jesse. Jesse. You got that new beginner slot. Oh, my God.
Liz Feldman
I'm just blowing on my dice. That's a move, right?
Lacy Mosley
Yes. But anyway, everybody who listens to this podcast already knows about. I swear I don't have a gambling problem. You can only gamble in Vegas. Okay, well, now that you've g. I.
Liz Feldman
Mean, we might need to give some of this money to poor Liz, who apparently gave it away to the toll scammers.
Jessi Klein
Yes, I. So, so they, you know, I mean, we're, you know, we. We escaped for a few days and liter my way back to LA once we knew our house was Okay. I started getting alerts, like, being like, did you purchase, you know, $600 worth of, like, gift cards from Best Buy?
Liz Feldman
You're like, I don't trace.
Jessi Klein
And here's the thing. Like, that's not even a good scam. Like, come on. That's the best they can do.
Lacy Mosley
Honestly, it low key kind of is because gift cards are untraceable. So once they have the money on a gift card, then that's cash everywhere else that they go, and it's not traced back of the car that they stole it from.
Liz Feldman
Oh, wow.
Lacy Mosley
That's incredible.
Liz Feldman
You really know stuff.
Jessi Klein
If you were actually running the biggest scam ring in the world, because you know all about it, this is what you should do next.
Lacy Mosley
Natural. Motivating me to scam people.
Liz Feldman
I know. She's like, honey, I'm doing it right now.
Jessi Klein
Yeah. She's like, what do you think?
Liz Feldman
Why do you think you had to sign in at the desk?
Lacy Mosley
Wow. Not these air quotes.
Liz Feldman
Whatever. Coming in so hot. I will say, the last time I had my credit card information bamboozled away from me, the way I found out was I got an alert from Expedia which said, time to board your flight to Paris.
Jessi Klein
And I was like, it's those French people. I'm telling you, the French, they fucking got me. That's rough.
Liz Feldman
But I was like, I really don't think I'm. I don't think I remember buying a trip to Paris.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, you'd remember something like that.
Liz Feldman
Yeah, I sure didn't.
Lacy Mosley
So they got two of your cards and one of your wife's cards.
Jessi Klein
Oh, no, no. Three, I think. Yeah, three altogether. Cause we share our, you know, we're betrothed, so we share everything. What's mine is her and vice versa.
Lacy Mosley
What scams is hers.
Jessi Klein
What scams is mine. As scams is hers. As the old adage goes.
Liz Feldman
Yeah. Part of the vows.
Lacy Mosley
I promise to love, be scammed, be.
Jessi Klein
Scammed, and give out 600 worth of best Buy gift cards indiscriminately. But. Yeah, but I. I just was like, I truly. And I appreciate you relieving me of the shame because I. It is a shame I carry around because I like to think that I'm an intelligent. You are.
Lacy Mosley
This does not make you not smart. And the thing is, is, like, people attribute intellect to so many stupid things. I personally think that everyone is smart in a different way. And I don't know why we've all subscribed to trying to be smart in the same way. That's not how it works. Look, I am smart in the spaces of entertainment or writing or things like that. But you asked me to look under a sink and fix a motherfucking plumbing. Guess what? I'm a fucking dummy. But you know what? There's somebody else who can do that, who's smart. You asked me, like, how to build a house. I don't know how to build a house. I can't roof nothing. But there are geniuses who know how to do that. I think that everyone has to find their own lane and find confidence in the fact that everything that we do all contributes to the world. And wherever your genius is, is where your genius lies. But there's a lot of people when it comes to scams, especially rich people or people honestly of any class, caliber who think if I got scammed, that means that I was tricked and that I'm stupid. No, we all have needs. That's a part of being alive. If you were born out of your mama coochie and they sat you on the sidewalk, guess how long you will live? Not very long. We all need help.
Liz Feldman
I think that gas, I think.
Jessi Klein
I didn't know we were going there. And I appreciate it.
Lacy Mosley
I'm just saying we all need help. We all have needs.
Liz Feldman
Sweet outlook on life. I feel very refreshed by this, like genuine, it seems, love of humanity.
Jessi Klein
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
Scammers know how to exploit needs. So no matter what it is, like, you do have a need. And I hate that. Sometimes we feel this shame where we don't share the information because we don't want people to think that we're foolhardy and then nobody gets information. And that's good for the scammer because they can keep doing the same bullshit because no one's talking.
Jessi Klein
No, you're right. So I guess what I'm here to tell you is if you get a text after you've just driven on a.
Liz Feldman
Toll road and you're fleeing a fire.
Jessi Klein
And you're fleeing a fire with your.
Liz Feldman
Family, two year old, the back. Yes. Yeah.
Jessi Klein
And they are asking for your credit card number.
Liz Feldman
Take 45 seconds.
Jessi Klein
Take 45.
Liz Feldman
That is wisdom for life.
Jessi Klein
That is wisdom for life.
Lacy Mosley
Think about the fact that like those types of charges always come in the mail. There are places where if you get an HOV lane and then you don't got nobody in that second spot, you don't got a baby, you don't got a family, they will take a picture of your license plate and charge you if you're speeding. There are certain red lights normally in Richer neighborhoods that have cameras that take a picture of your license plate if you go through a red or if you're speeding. Right. Those always come through the mail. So if anybody is texting you, that's not serious. That's very unserious. The DMV does not test. Think about how long it takes when you go to the dmv, you pull your little fucking number. You don't even get a sandwich at the end. You pull your motherfucking number like you're at the deli. And then you sit next to the people you would never see in your life for hours. And they got the worst shit on the tv. If they got a TV at all. And then you get up to the counter and you're dealing with the most fed up grandmother you've ever met.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
And that's what happens at the dmv. They are not sending out quick texts and mail for you to pay them. They are sending out snail mail through the USP.
Jessi Klein
Had I taken even 39 seconds, I probably would have come to you.
Lacy Mosley
Scam.
Liz Feldman

Y' all know how Amazon was just previously used to, you know, go on and get something very specific, like you want some earrings that look like Michelle Obama or something like just very specific that you can't buy in a store. Well, now Amazon is a great place to get all your essentials. You can get your toiletries. You can have them scheduled to deliver your toiletries, which I do because I've been running out of toilet paper. And that's very embarrassing, like, to be on the toilet and you don't have no paper. Like, that's. That's very sad and embarrassing. Can't believe I told y' all that. But next time you run out of coffee or realize you out of light bulbs, don't be in the dark. Amazon has you covered. Save every day with deals from Amazon. I just have to ask you the same question. What's your relationship with scams?
Liz Feldman
Well, I. I think I have always lived in deep fear, anxiety and paranoia about being scammed again.
Lacy Mosley
Yes.
Liz Feldman
Kind of an energy I give off.
Jessi Klein
Yeah.
Liz Feldman
And again, I think a little of the New York City ness is like, I I'm street smart, like I cannot be fucked with. And yet. So this. And yet. And yet collective congregation. T takes breath. So I hadn't thought about this until I walked in the door.
Lacy Mosley
Oh, wow. Not the energy of the room was giving me.
Liz Feldman
Okay, so when I was in high school, this is an old. This is why this is like the most shameful scam is because I, by the way, coming in, you said late millennial, I would describe myself as early Gen X. So picture it's the 1940s. But no, it was an in person scam when I was in high school.
Jessi Klein
In person?
Lacy Mosley
Yes.
Liz Feldman
I'm walking home.
Lacy Mosley
There's all types of industries.
Liz Feldman
I'm walking home from school, from high school, and I have like my headphones on of my yellow Sports Sony Walkman and these two, I don't know, they were 20 somethings come up to me and they're like. I like take my headphones in and they were like, hey, this is so embarrassing. I have not talked about this in 1,000 years. They're like, hey, do you. How you doing today? Oh, boy.
Lacy Mosley
Already a greeting salutation.
Liz Feldman
I'm like, whatever you want, I'll give it to you. No, they were like, how are you doing? I'm like, I'm good. What's up? And they're like, so do you. They're like, do you like magazines? And I said, I remember the scam. Do you remember the scam?
Jessi Klein
I do.
Liz Feldman
I never even heard of the scam. And I haven't heard of the.
Lacy Mosley
Okay, I haven't heard of the start of this. Do you like magazines?
Liz Feldman
Do you like magazines? And I was like, love them. Can I? Yes, please. They were like, we're selling discount magazine. And this is also again, another time and place when, like, I did used to love getting a magazine, a Rolling Stone.
Lacy Mosley
Do you remember what you were listening to on your Walkman?
Liz Feldman
Or probably Nirvana. Nevermind.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah, okay. Something or your head might have been banging a little bit.
Liz Feldman
I'm just, yeah, I'm just obviously very cool.
Lacy Mosley
You're vibing.
Liz Feldman
I'm vibing. I'm 15. I am clearly an easy fucking mark. So they're like, do you like magazines? We have discount subscriptions. I was, was like, they're like, do you want to hear more? And I was like, well, not a post. And then there were. So they, they start talking about like, well, we're offering like a bundle of like Rolling Stone, premiere interview, like peak, you know, Gen X.
Jessi Klein
And to be clear, there's no World Wide web at this point. You know what I mean?
Liz Feldman
Like, World Wide Web is not a sperm and Al Gore, whoever the. Invented it.
Lacy Mosley
No, there's, of course, Internet. Yeah.
Liz Feldman
Yeah.
Jessi Klein
Magazines were our connection to culture.
Liz Feldman
Magazines were our only connection to culture. To culture. There is no Internet, so I'm getting, I would say, a little alarm bell at this point. But I also. I'm like a teenage girl, so I don't know how to tell anyone no or stop. So. But I'm also like, they're really friendly. It's a man and a woman. Like, I'm not. So anyway, then they're like. They're like. So it's like $25, and you could pay cash right now for these subscriptions. I was like, I don't know. And then they're like, well, are you hungry or thirsty? Like, there was a blimpy and they're like, do. We could, like, buy you a soda and go. Go talk about it at blimpy. Which I gotta say, weak spot. Do love a blimp. Did love a blimpy.
Jessi Klein
Blimpy was like the subway of our time. You know what blimpy is?
Liz Feldman
It was very important.
Jessi Klein
Very important.
Liz Feldman
So they take me into blimpy blimpies.
Jessi Klein
Blimpy blimpies, blimpy.
Liz Feldman
No way to know.
Lacy Mosley
Let's pull it up. I think you're probably right. Like, Jesse, I'm. I'm thinking you have a very strong ele. Elephante memory.
Liz Feldman
And I'd be like, an elephante never forgets. Famously. Anyway, I go into the place, they buy me a soda. They. And like, they were like, do you want us to buy you a sandwich? I was like, maybe. Anyway, then they're like, taking out magazines.
Jessi Klein
It's just blimpy guys.
Lacy Mosley
Yep. See? Two for two. Two for two.
Liz Feldman
What if my face came up when you. I'm pretty close. So, anyway, the point is, by the end of the soda, they were like. I felt like I was in so deep that now it would be rude for me to not buy this bundle of.
Lacy Mosley
And that's what they were hoping, too. They give a little to get more.
Liz Feldman
They are giving a little to get more. And so I also, again, teenage girl. I don't know how much cash I had on me. Maybe. I think I was like, I have. This is what should have really been the final nail in the coffin of the scam was they were like. So it's like $25. Adjust for inflation. Again, it's 1950.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah. 25 went along a long way.
Liz Feldman
And again, I'm a child But I was like, oh, I only have 20. And they were like, that's fine, that's fine.
Lacy Mosley
Snatch it real quick.
Jessi Klein
Okay.
Liz Feldman
And then I. And then they're like, okay, have a great day. Bye. Bye. And then I walk home. And as I'm walking, I'm like, did.
Lacy Mosley
They get your address?
Liz Feldman
Yes. Oh, yes.
Lacy Mosley
Okay.
Liz Feldman
Okay. So then I'm like, oh my God. I'm like, I don't have a great feeling. And then I get home and I'm, I get to my parents and I'm like, can I get her? Can I take a temp from you guys on what just happened to me? And they're like, what? And I tell them, I'm like, I, I, I think I just subscribed to a couple magazines. And they were like, what? And as I told them, they truly were like, you, you dumb fuck. Like, who have we raised that we. She fell for such a truly. I mean, this makes toll roads look like nothing.
Jessi Klein
You were a child. I was 47.
Liz Feldman
Okay, that's true. But I will say then horror. Meet my parents.
Lacy Mosley
But the technology had advanced. These people were reaching out to your personal divine. They were, you know what I mean? These people were reaching out to her on the streets. Typically this is a door to door scam. They usually go knocking on doors. But they saw you cute, walking, listening to your nirv. And they were like, she, she likes magazines.
Liz Feldman
I did like, I mean, they just knew I liked magazines. And then I will. The end of the story is just very sadly, I would say for like the next three months.
Lacy Mosley
Oh, you were waiting for the magazines?
Jessi Klein
I was waiting a little bit for.
Liz Feldman
The magazines to show up. And honey, they didn't, they didn't show up. Would you believe? Not a one.
Jessi Klein
Honestly believe it.
Lacy Mosley
But also I probably guessed. Were those people kind of young to you? They must have been around an age.
Liz Feldman
That you felt comfortable. I mean, they were probably 24, 25.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah. So they're around an age that you feel comfortable. I bet you they probably were being scammed themselves out here. Hustle magazines. And maybe they wised up and realized like, if we take cash from people with all of these legitimate things that we have that the scam company gave us, then we could just keep the cash and move on. And they weren't looking for that much cash.
Jessi Klein
The presence of genius.
Liz Feldman
This. Okay, you are opening my fucking eyes right now.
Lacy Mosley
Holy.
Jessi Klein
Seriously.
Liz Feldman
I mean, the Best Buy card alone thing rocked me.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, I mean, you fucking know your shit.
Lacy Mosley
I have to. But also like, they couldn't keep Using your card, it would have been stopped. So they had to get that they could, like, not be traceable so that they could go and get their coins. That's right.
Liz Feldman
Guys, what if when I get home tonight, I open my mailbox and there is like a very dirty raggedy magazine that's been forwarded to me from the past.
Jessi Klein
They've been trying to find me.
Liz Feldman
It's finally here.
Jessi Klein
It's a 1992 Rolling Stone that's like Kurt Cobain.
Lacy Mosley
It's a rom com. Kurt Cobain, the man of the future.
Liz Feldman
Rip and bless.
Lacy Mosley
Yes. Well, let's get into my favorite segment here. Oh, historic hoodwinks. This is where I will regale, listen, jest with famous cons, capers, group of criminals. We'll see if we like them or we hate them. Much of this story is based on the Netflix documentary Con Mum. So we're gonna put that out there.
Jessi Klein
I did watch that.
Lacy Mosley
Wonderful. So let's get started. A glamorous elderly jetsetter claimed to be a British pastry chef's long lost mother. Showering him with money and gifts he love. He left his life behind to follow her around the world. But he ended up getting taken for a ride, literally and figuratively. Uh oh, this is not. Yep.
Liz Feldman
Toll road.
Lacy Mosley
So the pastry chef, lots of people who know Michelin star pastry chef Graham Hornigold. It's. It says Horny Gold. Not a great name. I mean, you horny for the gold.
Liz Feldman
Horny for the gold.
Jessi Klein
His mom was.
Lacy Mosley
And look at him doing that pose. Okay.
Liz Feldman
I mean, you can just change your name any day you want.
Lacy Mosley
So a lot of people know who he is. He's been on TV as judge on Junior Bake off. And he has his own chain of high end donut shops and cafes in London called Long Boys Donuts. He was named UK Pastry Chef of the Year in 2007. Look at him over here.
Liz Feldman
Oh, those do look delicious.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah, they look kind of like hot dogs, but for sugar.
Liz Feldman
I mean, what's on the. I was. Is that a radish on the right? What's going on on the right?
Lacy Mosley
I mean, he got Michelin stars. So, you know, they gotta have some like rhubarb.
Liz Feldman
It's a rhubarb, I think. Okay, okay.
Jessi Klein
Very nice.
Liz Feldman
Yeah, these do look good. These do look good.
Jessi Klein
They do.
Liz Feldman
Horny. I'm horny for.
Lacy Mosley
And it looks like he's got like the citrus, but he candied it a little.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, it looks like a little candied orange peel right there.
Liz Feldman
That's right. And I do like that.
Lacy Mosley
Fancy. This is the fanciest way to insert so much sugar. Right? That's a legume. He got the whole legume up in there. Okay. Oh, I didn't even see coffee beans. Like, what's going on?
Liz Feldman
And I have to say, like, I am very jealous of anyone who has the ability to, like, do, like, a.
Jessi Klein
Little pastry bag, like a little Michelin star.
Liz Feldman
He's Michelin star. He's Hornigold.
Lacy Mosley
Presentation comes into play. And look, he's with some young people who. I don't know who those people are, but he's posed up. Who are those people, Jess?
Jessi Klein
They're British people.
Lacy Mosley
I bet they're Junior Bake off people. So he's on the show and he's like. And, you know, Junior Bake off really was blowing up definitely during COVID too. But this is, like, so 2007. He was already established. So he was born in Germany on an army base and moved to England with his father and stepmother when he was young. His dad never talked about his biological mom or anything else, really. So all Graham had to go on was his birth certificate, which said his mother's name was half Patton Hornigold, formerly Maud. So I'm interested here because the mom had the same last name that he does. Yeah.
Liz Feldman
That also has bummed me right away.
Lacy Mosley
So were they married? Like, was the dad married to her? Or, like, it does say, formerly Mahamud, which means maybe the mom was married to the man at some point? I will say a dad who takes custody of his child probably would not tell you their mom's information, because when does that ever happen? Men do not take custody of their kids. And if they do, that really feels. Feels like a punishment to them. Women do it all the time. And, yeah, listen, if you're out there and you listen to this, or you have a partner who's Whose daddy ran away, which is probably a lot of y' all, please tell them to stop blaming the parent who stayed, because that's the only who stayed. Y' all making up all types of whim ass dreams about the person who left your ass, and that's all you know for a fact. But then the person who stayed. You want to get mad at them. You want to hate women. What's going on? They stayed and fed you. They could have left you at the fire department. Be serious.
Jessi Klein
Yes, but the reverse is true here. In this case, it's his father who raised him and the mother.
Lacy Mosley
But I feel like mothers, and this is obviously going to be like a Broad stroke. But a lot of mothers whose father figure for the child leaves the picture, they typically don't talk shit about the father who left. And they. Now, I'm not saying that of all mothers, but sure, we're racist in my toll of reality of a broad stroke, like, they're the person who stayed. And if the other person decide the dad's not, like, wants to listen. I've said this before.
Liz Feldman
It's very real right now.
Lacy Mosley
It was years ago. But I'm staying with my broad stroke generalization here for a reason. There's even advertisement that appears in LA sometimes. That is literally billboards and on bus benches and shit that says take time to be a dad.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
When we have to advertise for you to be a father.
Jessi Klein
Great point.
Liz Feldman
Great.
Lacy Mosley
Have you ever seen a take time to be a mom ad?
Jessi Klein
Absolutely not.
Liz Feldman
No. Never. Not in my entire life, no.
Lacy Mosley
Right.
Liz Feldman
No, not at all.
Lacy Mosley
Unless they leave the coochie. It's not all good Gucci. Mothers love your kid. No, no.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, but by the way, that. That. That would sell me.
Liz Feldman
Yes.
Jessi Klein
I mean, now, here's the thing. I did see this documentary, so I know the story that you're telling.
Lacy Mosley
So I know.
Liz Feldman
See, I'm coming in cold as ice. I know nothing.
Lacy Mosley
I'm coming in a little colder too. So. But what I do want to say is a sweeping generalization. I told you, it's not perfect. It's not. It doesn't account for every mother. I'm not saying they're all perfect, but what I'm saying is, is that a dad not telling you who your mom is, like, don't immediately red flag that. Now, in this situation, you might. But, like, again, this is one situation.
Liz Feldman
I'm hearing alarm bells. Go on.
Lacy Mosley
So in 2020, right after the pandemic started, Graham was quarantined with his romantic and business partner, Heather. A lot of y' all got married that way. The quarantine happened, and y' all were like, let's make it for real. And then I had to go to a lot of weddings in 2022.
Liz Feldman
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
Um, so they're quarantined. Right. Heather's also a pastry chef and a native of New Zealand. New Zealand. They were expecting their first baby. Baby. Everything was going really well in life, and it seemed like the final missing piece was completing the puzzle when he got a random email from a woman named Dion, or Dion, who said she was his mother and wanted to reconnect. And now this is why I'll say my sweeping generalization Works here. Because if your mother's not in your life, like you will. I mean this is true for fathers too. But like if there's a parent who's not in your life, I'll say that if they want to reach out, you will be open to it. Even if you're a Michelin star chef and you pop in and you on tv, you still want to know where you came from.
Liz Feldman
Again, I fell for magazines.
Lacy Mosley
So a mom is like, understand the.
Liz Feldman
Like, yeah, the mermaid allure. An email that's like, I'm your long lost mom.
Jessi Klein
I don't know why I feel like I have to defend this guy, but I will say that some. A detail that you do learn in the documentary which doesn't give anything away just yet, is that his father did not treat him well.
Lacy Mosley
He's shocker.
Liz Feldman
This is texture. This is texture.
Lacy Mosley
He was mad that he had to be the only parent. He was like, how dare you? This is your coochie baby.
Jessi Klein
So it wasn't a great situation. So I feel like he probably had a little bit of a hole in his.
Liz Feldman
In his heart, in his.
Lacy Mosley
Probably a lot of a hole. It sounds like one parent didn't want you and the other one left. So you know, they didn't want you. So. So they're expecting their first baby. Now. You probably think about grandparents like who's gonna be Gigi? Who's gonna pop? Pop obviously don't wanna be in the picture. So you know, this seems perfect.
Liz Feldman
Can I just say while we're on this. And again, broad stroke and I'm sorry cause I might be offending people in the room. I don't love when grandparents decide they want like a cool name that's not grandma or grandpa. I. I just feel like sometimes broad strokes, it feels like an attempt to like not be a grandma or a grandma to not be old, to not be old. It's like, you know what? Instead of calling me grandma, call me Cher. And it's like you're still the grandmother. Okay, sorry.
Lacy Mosley
Okay, but listen, it depends on how old they are when you have grandchildren.
Jessi Klein
That's true.
Liz Feldman
It could.
Lacy Mosley
Because I know I'm coming in with a seven year old grandma. You might want to be Gigi.
Liz Feldman
You might want to be Gigi. I.
Jessi Klein
My granddaughter does call her Grandmother Gaga, but that is only because she could not say the word grandma. Robbery.
Liz Feldman
Inspired by Judy Blume's groundbreaking 1975 novel Forever Watch the reimagined Coming of age series about young love by Mara Bracha Kiel, the iconic creator of Girlfriends. The epic love story follows two black teens, Keisha and Justin, as they explore romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other's firsts. Watch forever now playing only on Netflix.
Lacy Mosley
Mmm. The temperatures are climbing, y' all. And when the temperatures climb, it's easy to fall into the same old routine. Familiar tanks worn in shorts. Y' all know quints are my girlies. I literally wear them all the time and get so many compliments. And I know y' all girlies love to go to the discount, discount, discount, discount places to get your replicas. But don't you want something that's gonna survive a wash? Don't you want something that is going to be qualif. That's why I love quince. Everything with quince is priced 50 to 80% less than what you would find at similar brands. By working directly with top artisans and cutting out the middleman, we know the middleman is a scam. Quints gives you luxury without the markup. I've recently been wearing my, like, long linen quince dresses. I have one in olive green that I always get compliments about. Treat your closet to a little summer glow up with quince. Go to quince.com goddess for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. That's Q U, I, N, C E dot to get free shipping and 365 day returns. Quince.com goddess and fraud. So email mom. Graham didn't believe her, right? He responded, is this for real? No jokes, scams, et cetera. So immediately it's like, is this for real? Now here's the thing. If you didn't think it was for real, the right thing to do is just not respond. I say that all the time. You get a weird phone call. Guess what you can do over the phone? Hang up.
Jessi Klein
Baby, are you scamming me?
Liz Feldman
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
Y even got to do that. You could just hang up now if you like. A little ride. I know all of us, some of us have become accustomed to, like, seeing a scam through Sometimes some shit is weird. And I'm like, let me just go on this journey because I want to.
Liz Feldman
Know where you can make a ride.
Lacy Mosley
And a lot of times the scammers cut me off because I'll be too engaged. And they'd be like, nah, she's on to it. And I'm like, damn it, come on, Talk back to me. I want to know. But, yeah, I understand going on the ride for a little bit. But if something seems weird, just like we said, 45 seconds. You got more than 45 seconds in this situation. Just let that shit rock. So Graham asked her if she knew his middle name, a trick question because he doesn't have one, and what her maiden name was on his birth certificate. She got the answers right. So he started to believe this could really be her. Now, let's not forget that some of this stuff is public record, Graham. And if you're on television and you've been in the public eye, people will go into your details, your address, your phone number. Like, if you are someone who's in the public eye, please buy your homes in a trust. Because if your real name is on the home, it is public record and people will know where you live.
Jessi Klein
You can also get your name scrubbed from the Internet with any personal details.
Lacy Mosley
These are things to know. Yeah, but you have to make an effort to. Okay, Later. Okay. Okay, Jesse, by the time this airs, I'm gonna need you to have your. Your information about the Internet. My fans are very nice, the congregation's wonderful, but just, you know, we should always be prepared.
Liz Feldman
Okay.
Lacy Mosley
So Dion said she lived in Singapore and ran multiple businesses around the world, mostly in palm oil farming. But she happened to be in the UK at the moment and invited Graham and Heather to her hotel room in Liver, a four hour drive from London. They met up and Graham felt an instant bond. Even though he was 45 years old and Dion was in her 80s, he felt like a happy baby for the first time. Now I will say my heart is racing right now. Anybody in their 80s who black and look enough like me, I might be like, mama, mama, Mama, mama. Is that you also like, meeting up in person is something that's definitely going to lower your guard as long as they kind of look similar.
Liz Feldman
Okay, you know what?
Lacy Mosley
Also someone in their 80s.
Liz Feldman
It's not unbelievable.
Lacy Mosley
Elderly people, which I start in the 80s. Elderly people and babies have the same kind of riz where it's like I met maybe one or two babies that I don't fuck with, but the rest of the babies have good vibes. I'm like, it's a baby. Give me the baby. And that's the same thing with elderly people. I'm like, it's a old person. Give me the old person.
Liz Feldman
They would never. They would never.
Lacy Mosley
They don't have the time, the energy, the bandwidth.
Jessi Klein
Oh, keep reading.
Lacy Mosley
They all got diapers and depends.
Liz Feldman
But now I don't wanna jump the story. This question will jump the story. Never mind.
Lacy Mosley
Okay, we'll get to it.
Liz Feldman
We'll get to it.
Lacy Mosley
And I want your insight when we get there.
Liz Feldman
Okay. Okay.
Lacy Mosley
But so, you know, he felt like a baby for the first time. He's obviously had to be his own man. Like, you know, he got in this pastry industry. He's a hustler. He has his whole life going out for him and stuff. But we all still long for family and familialship, so I understand why he ran into this. Oh, she got mammy titties. So those are the titties that you hug and cry on. Oh, forgot the same kind of titties. Those are the kind of titties you just get in there and you like.
Jessi Klein
I mean, I'm gonna be honest. He's got the titties that you have.
Liz Feldman
Yeah, they both have crying titties.
Lacy Mosley
They can go band for band. They can go tea for te.
Liz Feldman
He might be thinking, she's my mom because I got titties.
Lacy Mosley
Yes, they can hug.
Liz Feldman
These are genetically my titties.
Jessi Klein
I mean, we've got identical titties.
Lacy Mosley
So pretty soon, he started acting like a baby, too, because he was like, this is my mammy titty.
Liz Feldman
And then I gotta say, they both do kind of look like babies.
Lacy Mosley
I mean, they do. They got that, like, honey bun face. The one that matches, like, honey bun baby growing into is, like, that round, cheeky cherub. They both kind of got like, a almost dimple. Like it is.
Liz Feldman
Yes. Zoom in.
Jessi Klein
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
See the skin tone, right? The eyes are a little small.
Liz Feldman
I would buy.
Jessi Klein
I mean, this is.
Liz Feldman
And she's also just to say she is not like, that is one of the most innocent hats I've ever seen.
Lacy Mosley
Like, you're like, no, she's dressed like a baby. You have so many babies at the beach with that same motherfucking hat.
Jessi Klein
Come on, be serious.
Lacy Mosley
That's a baby at the beach hat.
Jessi Klein
Okay, Baby at the beach scammers don't wear bucket hats.
Liz Feldman
No. Not with these little blue spirals.
Jessi Klein
No.
Lacy Mosley
And she got it tipped up a little bit. Just like a cute little baby at the beach. Yes.
Liz Feldman
This is breaking my heart, truly, this baby. Mom.
Lacy Mosley
So maximizing mom time. Dion told Graham she was dying of three kinds of cancer. Not one, not two, but three.
Liz Feldman
Doth protest too much.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah. The cancer's linked up. And they talk about hat on a hat.
Liz Feldman
Three kinds of cancer.
Lacy Mosley
Listen, she said, you need to know. I'm for sure die. Because maybe one cancer, he could have been like, we could beat this, mama. You know, depending on what type it is. There's so many beatable types of cancers. So there's a lot of hope. But then you get two, Even two, like, we might still have a chance. But three, I feel like, is a threshold where people are like, okay, yeah, okay.
Liz Feldman
She's like, every three kinds of cancer and make cancer as it's. I'm dying, I'm dead, and my cancer.
Lacy Mosley
Got another cancer on top of me.
Liz Feldman
So much cancer.
Lacy Mosley
So their mother's son time would be limited to the six months that she had left to live. Even though he was about to become a dad for the first time and would be needed a lot at home, Graham felt he should spend a lot of Deonne's remaining time with her. So he did. He spent time in her five star London hotel on the Thames while she racked up $10,000 of charges. She usually ordered caviar and only drank champagne. Now, listen, he. She's also presenting herself as someone who's independently welcome.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
Not the wedding photo where y' all, y' all, y' all swapping glasses of rose champagne. When I see one I.
Liz Feldman
And relationships getting weird in this picture.
Lacy Mosley
I mean, they only got six months. They got to rack it up, okay?
Jessi Klein
They got to take as many.
Lacy Mosley
They got to get intimate real fast. And also, this would disarm you as someone who's making money, who has TV credibility because you're meeting this person at their own nice hotel that you're assuming they're paying for. So why would they want anything from you? Because they're already balling out. Right?
Jessi Klein
Exactly.
Lacy Mosley
And so she's like, I got six months left. Let's drink the champagne. Let's eat this caviar. Let's turn up little baby son.
Liz Feldman
So bucket hat, Bucket list.
Lacy Mosley
Bucket hat, bucket list. Bucket hat, Bucket list, bucket.
Liz Feldman
Hashtag buckets.
Lacy Mosley
So concierges at the best London hotels knew deann well, acting like she had stayed with them many times and was one of their best customers. So every time they walk through the lobby, they're like, oh. Oh, it's Ms. Dion. Oh, Ms. Dion, do you need us to take your luggage up? Oh, another glass of Moet. So would you like.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, so what would you say?
Lacy Mosley
Caviar and creepy tide.
Liz Feldman
Wait, they're in on it?
Lacy Mosley
No, but they just are treating her like a VIP because she's obviously renting out one of the most expensive places.
Liz Feldman
Okay.
Lacy Mosley
Yes. People are going to make assumptions about where your room is in the hotel, whether they know if the wire trans food is come, like, coming through or not. Like Anna Delvey style. Like, you know, especially if you give a cute amount of Little tips. You get some hundred pounds out here and there. The girlies who work there are going to be like, oh, they tip us well. They don't know what you're paying for there.
Liz Feldman
A pound there.
Lacy Mosley
And the longer you stay, everything is closed up at the end of your stay at most hotels. So the longer you stay and you're you, if you give a little, they're going to expect that you get front.
Jessi Klein
End generosity for back end support.
Lacy Mosley
And she's older, so they're looking like she's probably spending the rest of her little old fortune there. A lot of people make assumptions based on how you look, how you act, how you dress. Like that's what we do as people. And so you know someone coming in at 80, looking sweet and docile with a bucket hat and a bucket list and a bucket of champagne and a bucket, triple bucket.
Liz Feldman
Back to Vegas, back to slots.
Lacy Mosley
Triple bucket, bucket, bucket, triple bucket. Okay. She works in threes like a good comedian should. Threes.
Liz Feldman
Okay, go on. I am literally talking about on the hook. Keep going.
Lacy Mosley
So employees at her many farms and businesses often rang her on the phone and all called her mum, grandma as a term of affection. So Dion told Graham her wealth came from her businesses and like from her being an illegitimate child of the former Sultan of Brunei. Red flag now anytime we're giving royalty.
Liz Feldman
I feel like we blew past red flag at the email, but go on.
Lacy Mosley
But I mean that email actually wasn't that wild.
Jessi Klein
No, I mean like she got this information correct. She's staying at a hotel, she seems to have money, she's spending the money.
Lacy Mosley
And if you're a public figure who's been on some television shows, it's not that bizarre to be like, to see someone on TV and be like, oh, that is my long lost son. And the email. And she guessed that there was no middle name and the marital last name.
Liz Feldman
Never happened to me.
Jessi Klein
Exactly.
Lacy Mosley
Cause why would he. So she.
Liz Feldman
Sorry, I'm screaming.
Lacy Mosley
So now, now she's telling Graham that she is the illegitimate child of the Sultan of Brunei. Right. Which also now connects him to the sultan. Right. Because that's the illegitimate child who had a child. Right. So now he's thinking, like, I got some sultan status. You know, look at the Sultan of Brunha. Like drip down sunglasses. What is happen that mustachio. That is a well groomed mustachio sunglass.
Jessi Klein
That seems weird.
Lacy Mosley
No, the sunglasses are given gas station.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
They're giving January 6th.
Liz Feldman
You know what it's giving?
Lacy Mosley
Like, like somebody who was on the way to January 6th, but was like a little late.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, yeah.
Lacy Mosley
And so by the time shit started going down, they just turned around and was like, no, I mean, this is the legitimate sultan, right? I mean, yeah, this is the real sultan. So this is sultan drip.
Liz Feldman
This is sultan drip.
Lacy Mosley
And like, I love this because she picks somebody who is somewhere from Southeast Asia and, like, all got the same skin tone. So, like, what's really gonna be a bump in this situation so far? And look, she got her drip on herself. She got.
Liz Feldman
What is this?
Lacy Mosley
I don't know where she got this metal hat from, honey, but it's giving something.
Jessi Klein
I mean, she's wearing a wall hanging as a crown.
Lacy Mosley
She also said illegitimate child. So maybe this is all that her mama could steal on the way out because they was illegitimate.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, no, that's.
Liz Feldman
Oh.
Lacy Mosley
So she said she's the illegitimate child of the sultan, right? She got a little bit of sultan drip that she either got on Sheen Die Sultan or like Amazon Sultan for Halloween, you know?
Jessi Klein
Yeah, exactly.
Lacy Mosley
They went to the Dorchester Hotel, which is owned by Brunei's Ministry of Finance and the staff knew her there too. So in Graham's defense, she has a fancy ass hotel where everyone's like, oh, Miss Queen, Miss Girl, Grandma Moo Ma, everything. And then she got some salt and drip off of, you know, the dot.
Liz Feldman
Com and she not a verified seller. Go on.
Lacy Mosley
And then she went to the Dorchester where she knows there's salt and drip. Baby girl did her research.
Jessi Klein
I mean, she's.
Lacy Mosley
Baby granny did her research.
Jessi Klein
She's working hard.
Liz Feldman
She's working hard.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, she's doing. She's doing a lot.
Lacy Mosley
Dion bought custom suits and bags and designer clothes for Graham and Heather. She bought him a Range Rover and her a BMW just to make up for lost time in terms of giving her son presents for his last 45 birthdays. So now she's tricking off on him. She's like, here are things, right? Give a little to get a lot. This is a little in her terms of what she's trying to get. So she's like, here's a Range Rover. She bought stuff for the wife so the wife wouldn't be like, this is confusing because when she took that hat off with the gold on it, it was green on the inside. And like, whatever weird things Heather the wife might have noticed, she already was like, let me pay this girl off too, so she could stop looking too closely.
Liz Feldman
Yes, I do like this look more for her.
Jessi Klein
You know what I mean?
Liz Feldman
Yeah, this feels right.
Lacy Mosley
And so now a Baby makes four. Heather went into labor two months later and gave birth to a son. Trigger warning here. Dion texted Graham to say she was peeing blood at the same time of the birth, including a picture of a toilet bowl full of red liquid. Now, here's the thing.
Liz Feldman
We're not showing that picture, are we?
Lacy Mosley
No.
Liz Feldman
Okay. Yeah.
Jessi Klein
I was like, you can picture it.
Liz Feldman
Yeah, yeah.
Lacy Mosley
No, here. No. It's a trigger warning for life. I was ready to be graphic description. Here's the thing. If anyone in my family who I love and trust told me that they were peeing blood or that something was wrong with them, I wouldn't be like, send pics. Like, I would just believe that. So to send a pic, too is already. Like, you're doing too much convincing for me. Like, we would just believe you, girly pop. Like, you don't have to send us the blood toilet. We don't need to see the, like, Japanese blood toilet before you hit the big flush. Like, we don't need to.
Jessi Klein
But, you know, she's got his little heart wrapped around her, which should have.
Lacy Mosley
Been enough, but she's trying to lock it down because she's obviously a scammer, which we're gonna find out how. But, like, she's trying to continue to convince him, and it's like, why do you have convince me if this is all legit?
Liz Feldman
I think we've learned that Dion loves to do the most.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah.
Liz Feldman
She's going bigger. She's going all the way home.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
And clearly she's been going big enough that she can do some of this shit on credit to convince him that she is big. Right. So he hadn't talked. So Graham hadn't talked to Dion's doctors, but she did carry around a bag of medication and would sometimes spend whole days on the couch unable to get up. So that's.
Liz Feldman
I do that as well. Same bag of meds, can't get up on the couch.
Lacy Mosley
I'm not 80, but, like, suddenly I'm.
Liz Feldman
Kind of with Dion. I'm just saying.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah, but a couch moment. Oh, love a couch moment.
Liz Feldman
Just a couch ride. Go on.
Lacy Mosley
So, thinking it was the right thing to do, Graham moved Dion into his house with Heather and the newborn. Ugh.
Liz Feldman
Sorry.
Lacy Mosley
Sorry. I don't know anything about this. What you think about your toilet? You think about Mr. Clean? Like, there was so much blood in the toilet. No, it's like a. In a blip.
Liz Feldman
I'm so upset.
Jessi Klein
It's just a vulnerable time.
Lacy Mosley
It is with a new baby. So two months later, Dion took Graham to Switzerland to sign paperwork to get access to hundreds of millions of dollars she was entitled to and wanted to leave in a trust for Graham and his family. Red flags. So she's still like, red flag.
Jessi Klein
Like, honestly, blood in the toilet flag. That's how red it is.
Lacy Mosley
But if you think about this from the bigger scope, obviously not a good relationship with the dad who was like, damn, I got to take care of my kid. Oh my God, I'm a father. This ain't supposed to happen. And he has a mom who is late in age, which we all tend to think like, later in age. If you are like a person with empathy and you fucked up in your life with your kids, that would be a time where you would try to reach back out and try to make things right. So all of this makes sense. It would make sense to me. Right? And so far, all that Graham has given in this situation is a place to live. Right. She's given the cars to, you know, she's giving gifts to the wife.
Liz Feldman
Check, check.
Lacy Mosley
She had him staying at the fancy hotel. They went to the place that he said like the sultan, she did illigrator a baby up. And they knew her there. So everything has been adding up, right? So this is a nice slow roll.
Liz Feldman
I mean, adding up is generous.
Jessi Klein
Well, but I, I, here's the thing. You cannot really blame him because. Because just knowing that information about him, the fact that they kind of look alike. There are things I think that I understand even as, and as a scammer.
Lacy Mosley
Who is like this, you know, flamboyant. I'm sure she got rid, she got personality. She had them titties that you want to cry in. He was crazy crying in them. She had all types of stories. Like, I remember when you were a baby. Oh, you used to smile so much. Like, like you would never remember, you know, when you were a baby, you used to poop and pee so much. It's like, I did use the poop and pee. Like, I would, like, did you ever pee blood?
Liz Feldman
Cuz I did.
Lacy Mosley
Right.
Jessi Klein
And by the way, I having seen the documentary, she also, like poured love and she was very effusive and demonstrative, like, very like, I love you so.
Lacy Mosley
You know, and if that's something you've been missing your whole life.
Jessi Klein
Exactly.
Lacy Mosley
And a lot of times, times people get into like, entertainment because they didn't get enough hugs, you know, they didn't get enough praise. So their whole job is like, validating their creativity. Yes. So this all adds up to me. So when they go to Zurich. Mama, Mama. Dion says that he needed to sign forms in Zurich and meet private equity lawyers, but it was only supposed to take four days. Four days turned into two months of delayed meetings, champagne, dinner, and no baby.
Jessi Klein
Work and no him being home with his baby.
Lacy Mosley
So he's taking after his dad now and leaving the baby like two months. And Heather by herself, doing all the midnight feedings and not getting no sleep. I hope they at least had a nanny, Heather. I hope y' all had a night nurse or something. Child. So Dion's global assets were apparently in the hundreds of millions and too complicated for these Swiss bankers to understand.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, because classically, the Swiss do not understand banking.
Lacy Mosley
No, it's not where we send all our money to hide it or anything like that. No, the Swiss were like, we don't. We only know chocolate and. And hot ass. Two clocks. Yeah, Swatch. Y' all got watches. We can do that.
Jessi Klein
We'll give you an elp, but I can't. I open a checking account for you. So sorry.
Lacy Mosley
One help, one alp, one else.
Liz Feldman
Hashtag one help.
Lacy Mosley
Meanwhile, Graham had missed half of his baby's life at this point and left Heather alone in the UK like we said. Now Heather's probably sitting over in the UK like, now, where the is my man? You. You ain't say you was going to pull up your father and leave, like, get your ass back over here. So when Heather saw that a large amount of money had been transferred out of their joint account into Graham's name, she wanted an explanation. I would want an explanation too, Heather, because this is supposed to be your man, your husband. And now you done had a fresh ass, baby. He done skipped town and all of a sudden he started moving money around.
Liz Feldman
The math is not, as they say, mathing. Okay?
Lacy Mosley
So Graham said it was for Dion, because even though she was a high roller millionaire, she couldn't transfer money from her international banks due to Covid.
Jessi Klein
Is she.
Lacy Mosley
You know when the banks got sick during COVID Yes. You know when the banks were like, I tested positive for Covid. Us The Swiss bank.
Liz Feldman
That non scam COVID test place.
Lacy Mosley
Yes.
Liz Feldman
Got that pause.
Lacy Mosley
The Swiss bank had positive Covid and they had to quarantine the bank and the money. They were like, everybody coughed on the money. So we can't give it to you because the money is. We gotta sanitize it.
Liz Feldman
I just got so cold. I'm really freaking out over here.
Lacy Mosley
It's so much covet on the money, you wouldn't even want it right now you 80, you don't want this Covid money. So Heather wanted Graham to come home. Duh. Cuz that's her, man. She got a baby, but Dion wanted him to stay. Finally, on Christmas Eve, he caved and went home and cooked a Christmas dinner like nothing had happened. So, yeah, you better pull out all. All your silverwares and all your la crusettes and cook for your. Your wife and your baby, because what the fuck are you doing?
Jessi Klein
Candied orange peel on every.
Liz Feldman
And you have to.
Lacy Mosley
You have to remember that Dion also has a little bit of an upper hand here because she's the long lost mother who also has three cancers who's gonna die in like, in like 64 minutes. So he's gonna be tempted to stay with her because she's like, I got this huge fortune to lead to you. I'm literally, look at the clock. I'm dying in 64 minutes. And let's do this. But Heather's like, I have a fresh ass baby. So you're gonna have to just come back over here because we have a fresh ass baby.
Jessi Klein
We have a fresh ass baby. We have.
Lacy Mosley
Oh, right, right. I'm sorry. I was speaking in man. I was speaking at man. Where, you know, the woman only got the baby.
Liz Feldman
It's a we.
Lacy Mosley
So Heather was leaving to spend six weeks with the baby and her family in New Zealand. And again, Graham said he couldn't go because of his mom. While in New Zealand, Heather found out Graham had opened new credit cards in his name and was accruing debt for Deon and started seeing car payments for the Range Rover and the BMW coming out of their account. Remember, those were gifts that Deon gave. And now all of a sudden, they're gifts that he. He has to pay for. That's not how gifts work.
Jessi Klein
No, no, no, no. Nope, nope.
Lacy Mosley
Also, if you get me a car, it better be a pink slip, registration fully paid off. Otherwise, you didn't get me a car, you got me a loan, baby.
Jessi Klein
That's exactly what happened.
Lacy Mosley
Bu. You got me a loan.
Jessi Klein
She put the debt on payment.
Liz Feldman
This was the scandal when Oprah was like, you get a car, you get a car, you get a car. All of a sudden, everybody was like, do I get a car?
Lacy Mosley
Those cars were paid off. The issue was, is that taxes on gift taxes meant that all these four. You were able to meet me here. All these poor teachers had to deal with $7,000 in taxes for the. You get a car, you get a car, you get a car, you get a $7,000 debt to the government. And obviously these teachers were in dire strength and could not afford that. So you gave them a gift that was also a $7,000 burden. So a lot of these teachers ended up selling the cars or, like, trying to accrue money to pay it off. But it's like, they should have paid for the gift tax along with the cars instead of.
Liz Feldman
There might be a gift text on the gift.
Jessi Klein
Gift text.
Liz Feldman
Go on.
Lacy Mosley
So now he's paying for a gift. Right. And he's paying for his mama's new car. Right. Deon hadn't bought those cars. Right. She just put down a deposit and financed them in Graham's name.
Jessi Klein
Oh, Graham.
Lacy Mosley
Oh. So when it seemed like Dion was paying for things like hotel stays and champagne, she was probably using cash she had borrowed from other people she met and took advantage of, making the same promise about frozen accounts and riches for from Brunei. So she was doing her own, like, Nigerian prince scam slash Ponzi. It's a little bit of made off, made off with your coins, but it's also a little bit of the prince scam of, like, I have money. You just need to pay the taxes and fees. Also, you're my son. So now she's roping in an emotional level that obviously would make people ignore a few red flags, especially if they have trauma around parentage. Right. And just became a parent. And like, Graham, now I'm gonna have to knock you on. Like, you had parents who were absentee or who did not fuck with you. And instead of when you had a fresh baby, changing the course of that and, you know, ending the generational trauma right there, you're now running after your own trauma, and your baby mama and your baby are alone somewhere while you accrue debt chasing your fake mama. At no point did you think to get a blood test or nothing.
Jessi Klein
Wait for it.
Lacy Mosley
So Graham had racked up. I love that you're here. Listen. Graham had racked up almost 400,000 USD in debt for his. His mom. Oh, my God. Not just hit her head on the microphone.
Jessi Klein
She just passed out.
Lacy Mosley
Y' all sign them waivers. We not liable. Hitting the floor.
Liz Feldman
Have hit the floor. Go on.
Lacy Mosley
Heather had enough at this point.
Jessi Klein
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
And has never come back from New Zealand with their baby. She said, you not going to have my baby caught up in this bullshit.
Jessi Klein
Exactly.
Lacy Mosley
Graham didn't believe that Dion was a scammer until he found red food coloring in the bedside table of her hotel room.
Liz Feldman
Stop it.
Lacy Mosley
L. She had taken a picture of blood pee in her toilet. Bowl. You know, they about to get rid of red DY40 in the US so I don't know how y' all gonna keep this scam up, but. So she had put. She had dropped a little red food coloring in with her pee so that she. And I love that she was traveling with it. So was that, like, a thing of, like, she had to just drip a little bit in the toilet and be like, I forgot to flush, son. I'm sorry. Like, she was still peeing blood. I feel like you should go to the hospital the first time you pee blood.
Jessi Klein
You just never know when a little fake blood's gonna come in handy.
Lacy Mosley
You don't. You really don't. You don't.
Liz Feldman
I'm speechless.
Lacy Mosley
So he looked closer at her big bag of medicine and saw that it was for cholesterol and blood pressure, not them three cancers.
Jessi Klein
Now, it's possible he did this a few months too late. I'll say that.
Liz Feldman
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
I mean, but that was because, remember, in the beginning, she was giving a lot. Right?
Jessi Klein
She was giving a lot.
Lacy Mosley
His eyes. Now, once he started to accrue the bills and be away from his family, I think that's when he was like, let me look into some also, Like, I just think the first time you pee blood, you got to go to the hospital. I don't think you pee blood and you're like, oh, a mull. No, I think you have to go.
Liz Feldman
Classic, do not pass go straight to.
Jessi Klein
But also, isn't this one of those classic, like, he got in so deep, he knows on some level that he is being scammed, and it's like, you can't admit it. Yes.
Liz Feldman
Well, you want to, Doc.
Jessi Klein
So, you know, thing one. You know one thing.
Lacy Mosley
She has a personal experience of the toll road situation.
Liz Feldman
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah. Because if you go three cards in, you're a little deep. But with Graham, it's like he's in, so. And honestly, I think there's a little part of your humanity that doesn't want to believe it. Because. Because if you long for having a parent love you, there's a deep abandonment that I don't understand. Because even though my parents were together when I was conceived, like, I have relationships with all four of my parents, and they all love me very much. So I don't have that want for that. But I would imagine having that want from that is like a deep lingering wound. Absolutely. And if you think that someone's pouring all this life and love into you, you wanna believe that they're doing it for the right reasons. Because it kind of soul ties into who you are as a human being.
Jessi Klein
It's like getting heart washed instead of brainwashed.
Lacy Mosley
A new Phra washed. Yes. Yes.
Liz Feldman
Congregation.
Lacy Mosley
Don't get hard washed.
Jessi Klein
Don't get hard washed.
Lacy Mosley
Liz. That's a good one.
Liz Feldman
Title of it.
Lacy Mosley
Write that down. I heard you were a writer. Write that down. I heard you was something of a writer.
Jessi Klein
Let me fix my beret. I have a feather on my beret.
Liz Feldman
Oh, you're like a sultan of swat.
Jessi Klein
Yes, I'm a lady of letters.
Lacy Mosley
So at letter's point, he insisted on a DNA test, hoping to some level that she was lying about being his mother. So in the end, guys, that's the only thing.
Liz Feldman
Drumroll, please.
Jessi Klein
Drum roll.
Lacy Mosley
She told him so. Remember? She told him that she was his mother. Now he's looking at DA. He's like, let's get a DNA. Like a DNA test. Right? @ this point, he's like, this woman has scammed me. She's taking advantage of me and my family. I want to be done with this. Let's do a DNA test. He should have done this in the beginning, but he did not. So now after he's 400,000 USD in, and his wife Heather is mad at him and she not leaving New Zealand with their baby. That last part was not a New Zealand accent. But, you know, we tried.
Jessi Klein
It's a hard one.
Liz Feldman
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
He's like, let's do the DNA test. And in the case I'm drumrolling of Dion Mahmoud.
Liz Feldman
Oh, my God.
Lacy Mosley
And the paternity of Graham, the DNA of the test says that Dion was not. Not the mother. She is his mother.
Jessi Klein
I mean, did you fucking see that coming?
Lacy Mosley
She is his biological mother.
Jessi Klein
His mother.
Liz Feldman
Oh, she is his mother.
Jessi Klein
Well, she did a double negative to really get you, and it got you.
Lacy Mosley
She's not. Not the mother. Which means she is.
Liz Feldman
I need to go to the For a thousand hours. I am so. I'm a husk.
Jessi Klein
She's not a mother. That's why they look alike. That's why he has her titties.
Liz Feldman
He does have her titties.
Lacy Mosley
Yeah, they have like, mama like son titties.
Jessi Klein
Those titties aren't random. They're not by accident.
Lacy Mosley
No, that is his mother. The day of the DNA test, when Graham got the results, that was the last day that he saw his mother, his real mother.
Jessi Klein
It's so heartbreaking.
Lacy Mosley
He got fucked by both of his parents.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
Now, Graham, I want to be on your side, but do you have bad vibes, like, both of them turned against you.
Jessi Klein
No, but he's so sweet. That's the thing in the documentary, which I honestly recommend that you watch. Like, you can see that the guy just, like, is longing for that connection. And he. His father, you know, his father did raise him, but his father was kind of a POS and wasn't great. And all he wanted was.
Liz Feldman
I love that we've been cursing the whole time and you're like, pos.
Jessi Klein
I just enjoy saying pos.
Liz Feldman
By the way, I think I was cursing the most and you weren't. I didn't want to put that up.
Lacy Mosley
I'll say. A piece of shit.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, he was a piece of. He was abusive, and I think he just was longing for a redo.
Liz Feldman
Like, can I ask a question? This is what I wanted to ask before, where I was worried I was gonna jump the story. So he never circled around with his dad about this woman or. Dad's dead.
Jessi Klein
I think he was estranged from his father.
Liz Feldman
But you could never just do a quick double check. Like, have you ever seen this bitch before?
Lacy Mosley
Well, I mean, Heather tried to do her due diligence.
Jessi Klein
Yeah, she did.
Liz Feldman
Heather was.
Lacy Mosley
She went to the police. But Deon couldn't be charged because she was truly family and Graham did know where his money was going. But after the documentary Con Mum aired on Netflix this year, Dion was charged with five counts of fraud against other men in Singapore. She's also accused of deceiving others into transferring money into her accounts. And that's where the little bit of money that she had, which is paying for the hotels and stuff and the.
Liz Feldman
Down payments to other men who are not her son. But then she also did it to her son.
Jessi Klein
Yeah.
Lacy Mosley
Because she said she would claim that the funds were needed as legal fees for the opening of new bank accounts. Because, remember, she's still doing that Brunei scam. Right. She sought their sympathy by saying she was terminally ill and vowed to reimburse them through her Brunei inheritance. Graham emailed the Brunei royals family, like, their PR account and said. And the family's PR account, the Brunei family, said that they had never heard of her.
Jessi Klein
Not shocked.
Lacy Mosley
Not shocked by that. But, like, to go this far to, like, scam your own son that you haven't even been in his life. And so that's already you taking a huge part of his humanity by not being a mother to him. And then to spin the block.
Jessi Klein
Yes.
Lacy Mosley
And then rob him.
Jessi Klein
It's so low.
Liz Feldman
It's so low.
Jessi Klein
It's so.
Liz Feldman
It's so low.
Jessi Klein
I don't Understand that lack of humanity.
Lacy Mosley
I really don't like go scam other people. We know you don't have no relation to them. But you depraved your son of a mother and then you gonna spend the block and also put him in debt, right when he's having his own child. Now he's distracted your grandchild, your grandchildren. And the only reason he's doing all this stuff in such an exponential amount like a time is because of the desperation meter of like you're going to die soon. You have three cancers. He's trying to spend as much time with you as possible. And you over here running it up on your own son. That is deplorable as hell.
Jessi Klein
And insult to injury. Injury to insult.
Lacy Mosley
How does that one go?
Liz Feldman
Insult to injury.
Jessi Klein
Insult to injury. I think you know what, she wanted that because baby to call her Gigi. Gigi. It all comes around.
Lacy Mosley
Wow. Wow. This has been.
Liz Feldman
I thought we would come in here today and just have a fun little time. I did not expect to go on a goddamn roller coaster. Space ghost. Coast to coast.

Notable Quote:
The conversation shifts to personal encounters with fraud, with Jessi Klein candidly sharing her unfortunate experience. During an evacuation amidst raging fires, Jessi received a deceptive text message claiming she had an outstanding toll fee. In a moment of high stress and urgency, she followed the scammer's instructions, leading to unauthorized charges on her credit card. This incident not only caused significant financial strain but also served as a poignant example of how scammers exploit vulnerable moments.
Notable Quotes:
Delving deeper into the world of elaborate frauds, Laci introduces the segment Historic Hoodwinks, focusing on the compelling story portrayed in the Netflix documentary Con Mum. The case revolves around Graham Hornigold, a celebrated UK pastry chef, who becomes entangled with Dion, a woman asserting herself as his long-lost mother. Dion's approach is multifaceted—she integrates into Graham's life by showering him with gifts, claiming familial ties, and positioning herself as a terminally ill benefactor from a noble lineage connected to the Sultan of Brunei.
As Laci narrates, Dion's manipulative tactics become increasingly clear. She leverages emotional vulnerability, promising access to vast inheritances while simultaneously incurring substantial debts in Graham's name. This intricate web of deceit highlights the sophisticated methods scammers employ to exploit personal relationships and trust.
Notable Quotes:
The episode further explores the psychological dimensions of scams, discussing why even intelligent and street-smart individuals can fall prey to heartfelt deceptions. Jessi and Liz reflect on the deep-seated emotional needs—such as the longing for familial connections—that scammers like Dion skillfully exploit. The discussion underscores the importance of awareness and emotional resilience in safeguarding against fraud.
Notable Quotes:
As the episode wraps up, Laci reinforces the core message of Scam Goddess: fostering a community where individuals can share their experiences without shame, thereby empowering others to recognize and avoid falling victim to similar scams. The guests, Jessi and Liz, also promote their own podcast, Here to Make Friends, encouraging listeners to cultivate meaningful relationships as a defense against isolation and vulnerability.
