My beautiful little sims. They be on there saying, like, genuinely all the time, and I'm like, damn, this is how I'm starting to sound. I got three words. What happened? But I'm not gonna make fun of them babies. Okay. They're going through enough. But it's true, right? Like, that's kind of a little bit of a scam in itself. I'm like, why y' all go put these little sims on here? And somebody put it in such a great reference way. We are watching these people, you know, in a Stanford prison experiment.

I know, but I want to ask you about your relationship with Scams Edict. So I like to play this game sometimes and just ask you a couple questions and get your opinion. Is something a scam? Is it a scheme? Or do you feel like it's a real thing? So I'm sure you're not gonna be surprised. The first one I'm gonna ask you is jury duty. How do you feel about jury duty? And if you don't mind describing the show to people who may have not been blessed to see it yet, which you must be living under a rock. But also. I love that for you. But, yeah.

Um. Hmm. Well, was it a scam? More of a scheme? I think that sounds nicer if you're talking about.

In relation. Cause I'm gonna talk about both. Just like real life, every day. But like, if we're talking about in relation to the TV show you were on, how do you feel? Like that was.

That was a scheme. It was a planned scheme. I can't say scam.

No, no. I don't think it's a scam at all. But I'm more so asking about your experience and, like, the show. Like, do you feel like y' all were tricking this person? Where do you lie on that?

Like, they started to expand into other experiences where you would wanna entertain yourself. But I think it started with airplanes.

They're like, no, we need to feel pain. I'm like, this is why y' all are so upset. Yes, but. So that makes a lot of sense to me. I would say, like, actual jury duty, when it's not a show, is also a scheme, because.

I haven't either. And now it's very difficult in our industry to do it. Because I can't be like, hey, Sony. Hey, Disney. I can't make my job. Cause I have to go sit on this jury. But I'm trying to figure out a way to do it. Because more black people and more women in general need to be doing jury duty. Because if we're not there to represent our ilk, our peers, then these people aren't getting a fair trial. You know what I mean?

Yes. But who wants to do that?

I know. And that's what makes it so hard. And I think that there's so many people who wanna be cops. Like, the thirst to be a cop in life is so strange. To me, like, that's where we got the term Karen from. You know what I mean? It was like people who wanted to be police and everybody else.

And so those people show up to jury duty. Yeah.

Yeah. I feel like the people that end up on it are probably the worst kinds of people or people who are bored or have nothing else going on in their life. That's why they're there. And now they get to feel, like, righteous.

And then I also think, I hope that, like, retired people, I hope that elderly are going. Like, y' all got a lot of wisdom. Like, y' all pop up in there, Memaw and Pawpaw, and instead of getting scammed on the phone, hang out at court and help decide somebody's fate.

But I know that we have to do it, too. It's just so hard at this point in my life to give up that time, because I simply cannot. They're like, you know, we own you, right? You can't not come. But then if I show up to jury duty, the government gonna be like, you know, we can arrest you. Right? Since you just not coming no more.

I know you're like, but I'm an actress. That you understand.

But I think a lot of, like, really busy people are also. And this is not to take away from people who have free time, because they can also be highly intelligent. But I think a lot of highly intelligent people are like, I don't have time for this shit. And then it's like, so now we got a jury of all the George Bush's kids. It's like, George Bush dropped off all these kids at the courthouse and left them behind. Now they get to decide your fate. Yeah.

It's not. But I'm like, how do we fix it? I'm like, if you do have the time, guys, you gotta make the sacrifice, please.

And I know that everybody would be thirsty to get the short trial, but what if we could bring in, like, our, like, our doctor's Notes or our excuses of, like, why we can't be on anything like a murder trial or something. That way we're there for something.

Yeah. How did it feel like, even just like, in this show recreation, were you bored ever?

Or was it like, oh, my God, there were such long periods of, like, witnesses going up and being really boring just so that the reality stuff felt more real. But yeah, it was boring. But then also, like, we wouldn't see some of the witnesses before. So then sometimes they have someone get up and they start doing something extremely funny. And we haven't even been briefed on it. And we're all, like, trying not to laugh. Like, not looking at each other like, oh, my God, I can't believe they're doing this to us.

Right. I think that's a moment where you could laugh, though. I feel like, think about Cardi B when she was on the witness stand. That was.

Like, you might get one of those.

You're a doctor or a nurse and you're trying to get famous on TikTok. Why are you even content? But it's like, now every profession's like, I'm a plumber. They call me Joe the Crack.

Oh, they've already found me. And they'd be in the comments, like, great feat. Or I look at my wiki and it's literally every foot, everything, exposure. And I like to show other actors who were like, a little older about it. And I showed Jerry Trainor about it. I was like, you know you have a wiki, right? And he was like, what's that? And I showed him, and he was like, this doesn't even make any sense. This one pictures of my dog. And I looked at him, like, with the most sinister eyes, and I was like, zoom in. He was like, oh, my God. So, okay, so you have a great market. I partake.

I. There was this guy who asked like, he was like, can I do the thing with you? And he was like, I like to do it as we go. So, like, you send five pictures, I send a hundred dollars, you know, and then I send more pictures, he sends money. And I was like, all right, that's fine. So the first time we did it, that's what we did. He sent me like $300. I'm literally just sitting in my room. I was talking with my roommate. They're good. They're nice. No, no, he likes my personality. That's where it's coming from. So this was the first time. Then the second time he was like, hey, you want to do it again? I'm not doing anything. Why not? I'm taking pictures. And it's said on the PayPal thing, I mean, this. You can make fun of me. It said on PayPal, pending. The payment is pending. And he was like, I live in England, so. And I was like, I guess he's across the pond. It takes time to, you know.

Well, PayPal sometimes does have a pending payment. And what's crazy about it is that if you're on the wrong end of that, which I have been where I sent money that was supposed to go to a family member and it was a lot of money, baby. Didn't get it back. And I was calling PayPal the second I did it.

Yeah. And I was like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. And they were like, oh, it's above us now. Fuck PayPal. But also sponsor the show PayPal, but continue. And that makes me feel some type of way that I'm getting ghosted by scammers, but so now you feeling involved. Okay, okay. And what did that do for you?

Like, I kind of liked. Then I kind of Got into the idea of him of being scammed. Like, the power dynamic of being scammed. I was kind of like, why do I like this? And then I was like, what if I just send him pictures just, like, for no reason? And then I was like, what if I start paying him?

Finding him unearthed a network of michelin star restaurant reservation scalping that was happening across New York City. If I call, I can try to be like, hey, have y' all heard a scam got? And they probably be like, bitch.

And it's this 10. It looks very fancy. It also looks just very expensive. They're only gonna do maybe 20 covers a night. Maybe three sittings. Maybe they get 30 people in that bitch. So, you know, it's expensive.

Although I do like this better. You know, there's a lot of expensive restaurants where it's like, huge. It's like the size of a Cheesecake factory. If you're, you know, Yelp the Ross dress for less of reservation apps, Everybody's on Yelp. So Rezi is also, you know, like a fake bougie one. So Rezi and Tak are now the new Bougier.

So Talk got, like, more excited expensive reservations because people were using prepaid bookings and dynamic pricing. So the hotter the restaurant, you would have to pay in advance to get the reservation. And this has now just become a thing. So people you know will be like, oh, I'll make a Resi. Which, I've heard people say that, especially in New York, but now that word is just like how Kleenex is. Like, you don't say, oh, can I have a nose tissue? You say, can I have a Kleenex? So they have the brand now.

See terms and fraud. So in early 2023, the general manager there, he got a tip from that it was becoming impossible to get a seat at the restaurant. Reservations were being scooped up and resold in a close group on a Chinese social network e commerce site called Rednode or Little Red Book. So somebody was using the name Winter's Wang and other aliases to sell reservations for an additional $180 per seat. So they were going to get the reservation with the 500 deposit. Right. Then they were taking that reservation to another website, flipping it into 680. Right. Then you still gotta go to the restaurant and pay that one 46. And that's not drinks included. So somebody else has figured out a way to get in on this.

Genius, right? It's genius.

I mean, it hurts me though. Cause it makes me think about your foot flipper and how he was flipping the pics and I don't like that.

So Mayumi, the restaurant manager, they wrote to TikTok, or excuse me, see, I'm calling it TikTok. They wrote to talk and they alerted them of the scalping that was happening. And she also got screenshots from the scalping website revealing the methods that they were using to scalp these seats at famous New York restaurants.

But how are people finding out? People are seeking out the scalping website. Yes. Okay.

And so regulars who perhaps were able to call before because once you have a rapport with a restaurant, you don't have to use those apps anymore. They know you're. You know what we used to call them? Like, Soigne's. So if I got, like, a chit from the hostess that said, like, a very important, like, Soigne is coming in, that means that this is somebody who spends a lot of money with us. There might be things on the chit about their allergies, their preferences. Lionel Richie used to come into our restaurant all the time, and he isn't great with chopsticks. And he's like, you know, I'm from Alabama, baby. And so it got to the point where if I knew when he was coming into the restaurant, I would already have the chopsticks on the little kid thingies for him.

The little clippers. Like, I would have his drink order ready. Cause, like, he. You know. So the Soigne's were starting to be like, hey, I just usually call y'. All. And every time I try to call y', all, now y' all booked up. What's going on? And so that's when she had the inkling to see if there was someone else taking the reservations. Cause they know what reservations they're getting from what websites. And also, if you think about it, if I were to purchase the Restoration under a fake name on TOC, the real AmEx website, right? And then I go resell it, I probably have to change the name on the reservation or somebody or a bunch of different looking people keep coming in as Mr. Wang. Like, what if I showed when I was like, hey, Lacey, party of. Or I'm like, yeah, it should be under Mr. Wang, party of two. They gonna be looking at my black ass. Like, who? I'm like, no, no, no. Y' all know who I'm talking about. Mr. Wang, I got a very complicated family, okay? We got. I'm adopted. Like, people are just coming in with the same person's name or they're having to change the name. So it makes sense that they got this evidence. And so now they're trying to stop what was going on. So wrapping this up, Winter Zwang, which is the fake name who's also me. I'm now Winters Wang. A proud Asian woman, as I've always been. This person isn't the first or the last dinner reservation scalper. In 2023, Appointment Trader.com sold for almost $6 million in restaurant. They sold almost $6 million in restaurant reservations.

I got a party at three, at eight. What you want for it? What you want for it? I hate America.

You know what's a good hack? At the fancy place I worked at, you can go in person and make a reservation for the future, anytime in the future.

The hashtag is like a group of finance bros. They started using this hashtag in 2022 called freerezy for a group chat based out of the encrypted messaging platform Telegram. And they got busted. So they done got on Telegram and these are fat bros. They're gonna find a way to rob us all. Like what is the fight? What's the stock market? What do they add to the world?

No one does. It's theft. It's a casino. Ain't nobody ever been like a Wall street bro. Built my home. No, it's more likely they bought your home and out priced your neighborhood. Yes, all they do is destroy. So of course they started doing Telegram and having their own sketchy ass resi as well. Not shocked, right? So most of these reservations that they were using on this secret app. Cause this is another one. This is the telegram 1. Freeresi. These reservations fell between 7 and 9 and they targeted in demand tables at Michelin star restaurants like Le Bardin and you know, TikTok's favorite St. Theo's. So they're going for the ones that are really popular. There were 700 people in the group when it was shut down, including Band members from the Chain Smokers and Lost King. Wow.

So many restaurants were still like in 2022 requiring you to show a vaccination card when you showed up to dine, right? And maitre d's noticed that the reservation name and the vaccine card were different. So remember when I brought up earlier that I was Ms. Wang? Everybody can't be Ms. Wang. Especially if your vaccination card is not the same. So Rezi deleted people's accounts. So they. So there were people who created the telegram, right? Our finance bros. Their names were Cole, Sal and Steve. I don't really need to give them too much credit. That's all we need to know about them. But Rezi was like, y' all gotta go, bitches. So deleted all of their accounts that they were using to get these reservations, including ones that they use for themselves personally. So now they can't even use Rezi no more. They done got kicked off. They banned getting banned from a reservation website. Like, can we all be so serious and for real? And I'm gonna wrap it up with something that is like a little bit of a pivot. But before I do, I do wanna let you know that Steve and Cole had comment when they got deleted from Resy, Right? Cause cab drivers had like medallions and those things were like a million dollars to own your cab. And like, I felt bad for them, but I also didn't feel bad. Cause I've been hit by too many cabs in New York City. And when I say clipped, like, clipped like, I opened the door and I'm leaving my job. It's like 4am I'm like, Hey, I gotta go to Brooklyn. They're like, I'm not going to Brooklyn. And they drive off, the door's still open. I'm like, ah, y' all should have been nicer to me, you raggedy bitches. But like, that's what disrupting is. It's like subjugating the market and then making yourselves a monopoly to where now Uber's like, who else you gonna get a ride with? It's US or a DUI HO. So do you want to pay $183 to go four blocks up this road home? Or would you like to be in jail or worse?

So sometimes it might be risks that we need to take.

For what the drivers get on Uber. If I have a driver who's like, nice and sane, typically I do this with women or like black cars that I know, like, are very expensive. If I really fuck with them, I'll be like, hey, what's your phone number? Because they'll offer too. They'll have business cards. And then you can pick me up again, actually drive me around the city. Because now we both Getting our money's worth. Yeah. So. But I hate that we have to do that. And also I hate the risk involved in that because now I really am just getting in a car with a stranger with no accountability for what happens to me because there's no app tracking it. Even though Uber doesn't allow. Once you sign up for Uber, they don't allow you to do, like, public court. Like, if you want to sue, you have to do private arbitration.

And what that does is it shields Uber from the responsibility of the public knowing what's happened in certain cars, or even statistics on, you know, assault or the driver being intoxicated or whatever the case. But I have a sneaking scam suspicion because every now and then Uber will send out an email that's like, if you'll drive a truck, let us know. And I'm like, what? This is the last thing I should be getting from the taxi service. Was your driver smoking crack. Call Uber support. You can tell us it's not happening, but we just want to make sure they not smoking crack in the Uber. That's all. Don't worry about why we asking. I'm a little confusion, but. So the DMV is also having a scalping issue. And this wraps up our episode. I just wanted to briefly touch on the fact that some states have passed legislation attempting to stop this kind of reservation scalping and to dismantle third party reservation services, like Appointment Trader. So Appointment Trader wasn't just doing restaurant appointment trading. They were.

New York was the first to pass the Restaurant Reservation Anti Piracy act, which bans third parties from selling restaurant reservations without the restaurant's consent. The law went into effect mid February, and California is working on the same thing.

there, because, I mean, it's Florida. It's the wild, wild west, but it's been happening in Florida, New York, California, major cities where I think DMV appointments are even harder to get because our populations are so dense and everybody's going at the same time, you know, either before work or after. This is why I love being an actor, because I can go random times of the day sometimes, which is a blessing. But. Yeah. Victims in Miami have filed a class action lawsuit against the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, since scalping DMV appointments is technically, obviously illegal. But I can't imagine having to make a class action lawsuit because I need to go to the worst government place on earth. Like, if Disneyland is the best place on Worth, the DMV is the worst.
