Being prepared is a very common concept for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts, but it’s not something that often gets applied to sexual violence and harassment intervention. And the skills we need to keep each other safer from sexual harassment and violence-- surprise!-- aren't ones we've been taught or encouraged to exercise. When it comes to outdoor communities, studies show there are additional factors to consider that increase the risk of sexual assault and harassment taking place. So why aren’t we talking about it? And more importantly– what do we do about it? Join Morgan Flynn and Cora Phillips, two staff members from Seekhaven Family Crisis and Resource Center in Moab, Utah, to hear more about how we can make a tangible difference, even in one person’s life, by showing up prepared.Need a transcript for this episode? What’s the deal with our collective embarrassment around hygiene? How is sex and gender tied up into all of this? What happens when we don’t talk about hygiene openly? And-- just as importantly-- what happens when we do?Anastasia Allison, founder of Kula Cloth, joins the show to dive into this, and we lean on our own personal outdoor hygiene stories and mishaps to illustrate that when it comes to hygiene, there’s nothing dirty about it-- and nothing to be ashamed about.Featured in this Episode:Anastasia AllisonInstagram: @kulacloth / @anastasia.allison Website: Kula Cloth (and check out the Sex Outside Kula!)Check out a special bonus poem about outdoor sex by Anastasia: A (Very Honest) Poem by Kula ClothLet’s be friends:We want you to be a part of the Sex Outside community! The Sex Outside closed network is a new way to engage with Sex Outside and connect with other community members. Condoms are single use, which might give some environmentally-minded folks reason to pause and wonder if they should use them or not. However, condoms are also incredibly accessible and effective when it comes to unplanned pregnancy and STI prevention. So today we’re taking a journey together following the general lifecycle of a condom to better understand the impact of single use products like condoms while also holding how essential they are to our sexual health.Mentioned in this mini episode:Here’s how you find more from our host and narrator, Laura Borichevsky:Instagram: @howsheviewsitLaura regularly creates practical, outdoors-focused sexual health resources online. When it comes to gender binaries, there’s a lot of digging to do to get to the root of our problems. And while there are a lot of ways to uproot a plant-- it really depends on how much it’s grown, how tightly its roots are wound, how far its system has spread and embedded its tendrils into the ground-- that determines how challenging it is to get it out.Nick Albritton, a transgender man and outdoorsperson, spends a good deal of time unpacking specific ways he’s seen gender binaries show up all throughout his life, and the damage they can do-- especially to transgender folks and those who are gender nonbinary. He also shares about the way nature has quite literally saved his life and helped give him the space he needs to dig deeper into what it means to truly be himself.Featured in this Episode:Nick AlbrittonInstagram: @boyrevelryRead this post from Nick about desire, trans identity, and cis normsAdditional Resources:Take the Sex Outside Community Survey and be entered to win a Sex Outside prize pack, as well as receive a discount code for 10% off the Sex Outside sticker shop!About our Sponsor:Janji aims to explore, connect, and give back by crafting comfortable, responsibly-produced running apparel guided by the places we run and the people we meet.Get 15% off your next order of Janji with code SEXOUTSIDE at checkoutLet’s be friends:We want you to be a part of the Sex Outside community!Find Sex Outside on Instagram! @sexoutsidepodCheck out what we’ve saved for you on PinterestWant to support Sex Outside?Leave a 5-star review in Apple Podcasts or the app of your choosing!Head to the Sex Outside Shop to find stickers, shirts, and underwear!Need a transcript for this episode?
