So if you look at your wheel of life and being with friends is important to you, make sure there's a ritual around your friends.
Rob Dube
Hello, everyone. My name is Rob Dube, and I am here with Gino Wickman. Gino, what's happening? How are you?
Gino Wickman
I am fantastic.
Rob Dube
Great. Good to see you. I'm excited to talk to you today, have a dialogue about rituals. All right, so the inspiration for me on this topic came from a blog post I read and I got thinking about rituals. So I looked up the definition about it, and it said, rituals are symbolic and actions performed in a set way to mark transitions, support well being or nurture community and spiritual connection. Examples range from religious ceremonies and daily personal routines to culture, celebrations, and community events. So I got thinking. Rituals are actually really important. They shape the experience in our life. They can calm our mind. They can connect us with others and to something bigger than ourselves. They're a sacred. You might think about it in the context of alignment of your outer life and your inner life. And some rituals, and I hope some of the ones we discussed today remind you of who you really are and actually what matters most to you in your life. They kind of keep you connected to the rhythm of life itself. So when you do this with intention, they give you the opportunity to surrender, to let go of your ego and become a vessel through which peace, wisdom, and compassion can flow through you into this world. So, Gino, what's coming up for you on this topic?
Gino Wickman
Two starting thoughts. One is, you know, I love where you are. I had no idea what we're going to talk about this one. All I saw was ritual on our topic list. Um, so I'm going to want to bring something else into it that's very much rituals, but I want to take it beyond just spiritual.
Rob Dube
Yeah.
Gino Wickman
I want to throw a little fun in there.
Rob Dube
Love it.
Gino Wickman
Fun rituals. So. But I. But I just. So that's coming. Not yet. And then just the other point is just something really funny. I wrote a stream of words because we're calling it a ritual. That's just a word. Right. So many different terms for it called a routine, a cadence, a pulse. But then I wrote rhythm of life. You can see my words right there. Your exact words that you said. And I. That's probably the best word for it, you know, because this is how the universe works, you know, in a rhythm, and that's you figuring out your universal rhythm that makes you whole.
Rob Dube
Yes.
Gino Wickman
And I'll share some of mine. I hope you're going to share some of yours. But on that note, I'll turn it back.
Rob Dube
Yeah. So let me give some examples of rituals. You're going exactly where I was hoping. So religious or spiritual things like prayers or mantras. Daily rituals might be like meditation, journaling, or saying grace before meals. There's rites of passage like wedding vows or rituals placing flowers at a gravestone or a bar. Bat mitzvahs. In Judaism, connecting with your breath can be a ritual. Getting away with intention to go inside, such as going on retreat, expressing gratitude is a ritual. Journaling your thoughts, your feelings, lighting candles, going into nature, eating mindfully or mindful preparation, say, like of coffee or tea. So I wanted to ask you, what are some of your rituals?
Gino Wickman
So this is where I'll bring in, you know, just a little more robust, beyond spirituality. And it's going to bounce all over the place because I'm going to start at the top of my list and go down. But, you know, there's one ritual that's been going on with me and two friends, and I write about it in shine for now, 25 years, probably closer to 30 now, but three of us go to Boulder, Colorado every single year in May. And it is absolutely a ritual. And as part of the ritual, it's three friends getting away, blowing off some steam, having a blast. But we also bring in some form of a healer, coach guide to take us deep and shed a layer. And so that's an example of a ritual that has been very profound and made a big impact on my life. The next is a ritual I have where once a week I'm typically out with a friend or friends having a drink or two. So that's one of my rituals every week. I just want to be sitting with a buddy, having a conversation. And it's a, it's, it's, you know, it's a variety of friends, you know, and so it's, you know, probably seeing the same friend, you know, maybe every couple months or every month, something like that. But that's a really important ritual to me. Just hanging out with my buddies. Yeah, hanging out with the guys. Next is my morning meditation, you know, and I do it three to five times a week, and sometimes it gets upwards of seven. But just that, that morning meditation ritual, doing it most mornings I have a mobility routine that I do about twice a week that my trainer taught me, which is really awesome. It's just something about it gets my energy going. I sauna every Saturday morning. I see my trainer every week. I prepare every night. So obviously that discipline vital. I do an annual Golf trip with my high school friends. So I revert back to 17 years old once a year for three precious days. And that's plenty. But it's awesome. And then I just wrote down hugs, you know, it's like, I'm a hugger, you know, and so I. I consider that a ritual, you know, that that connection to people is. Is very important to me. And so that those are some of the ones that come to mind. Certainly there's family rituals, holidays, things like that. You know, with my parents for decades, I would make sure I was visiting them once a month outside of holidays. So, however, just spending time with them now that they're older and they're needing help and care, I see them every week now. And so I have a weekly ritual with my parents now that's been going on for about two or three years now. So there's certainly some family rituals in there. And I would say that's my jumping off.
Rob Dube
I love that. And so, you know, for you listening, the idea here isn't that we're just sharing our rituals so you can hear what we do and it's all about us. But really, hopefully, it's getting your mind going around what your rituals are in your life. You know, mine are. I have daily meditations twice a day. I do yoga every morning, every evening as well. I do breath work. I get into nature on a very regular basis. I connect to the five elements is really important to me. I go on two silent retreats every year by myself. I do a trip with each one of my kids individually every year. So those are some of the things that I do. So what are some of the things that you do? Take a moment after this podcast and jot down five things that you do is in your life that a ritual. Maybe you'll come up with more. As you heard, Gino and I have definitely more than that. And yeah, so I encourage you to do that. Now, in Shine discipline number two is take time off. And we also, as it relates to take time off, we talk about the value of taking a sabbatical in the space that it gives you to reconnect. And it got me wondering, sabbatical is a ritual for you? I don't think you mentioned it. You mentioned your culture.
Gino Wickman
No, it's. And you know, as you're talking, I'm thinking of others. I Forgot, you know, 60% of them, you know. So again, you're hitting me with this topic fresh. But the point, I like what you said is it's not to hear all of our Rituals. It's to develop your own rituals out there and borrow some of ours that you love. And so we're just giving ideas. So I'm not going to remember them all. But yes, the sabbatical. Another one that came to mind is we do a family vacation. So with the kids and the grandkids in the last three years, we now have grandkids. Before grandkids it was the kids. But we would do an amazing one week vacation every year. We've been doing this now for 15 years. It's just a great opportunity to get away and we come up with a vacation that they can't refuse. And so that's a ritual, my four day personal retreat that I've now talked about on a couple episodes. I did it for the first time this year and I'm like, oh, that is an annual ritual that is going to be a tradition. So again, lots of examples.
Rob Dube
So that's interesting you brought that up because, you know, I was thinking about my rituals and how they've evolved over time and I wanted to share a couple of things that came to light for me with what the rituals provided for me on the inside. And then I'm curious if this is resonating at all with you. One thing I notice is I become more comfortable with my spirituality. It has allowed me to almost, and I have it. That's all caps, almost fully let go, letting go of things like fear, things of, you know, my thoughts about the future, all these loops and patterns I've had in my life for so long. Any judgment, self judgments, judgments of others and really actually help me be more in the moment. And these rituals are really key on a daily basis to bring those things to light. So I wonder what's coming to mind for you on that.
Gino Wickman
Yeah, so where that takes me is, you know, you're talking about outcomes of rituals, right? And so this, I wrote down a few things here. So like the first thing I wrote down is balance. So this really rings strongly for me. And that is rituals give you balance. And so it's like everything in moderation. Okay. So when I go have a drink with a buddy every single week, it's balancing my life so that I'm spending time with family, friends, myself. So it's if, if I stop doing that, if I stop hanging out with friends, I feel that I'm incomplete as a human being. I think that's a part of my life. So it balances me. These family rituals, these individual rituals. I just describe it as balancing. And if you stop one, you're out of balance, or if you're missing one, you're out of balance. And so if you look at your wheel of life and being with friends is important to you, make sure there's a ritual around your friends. And so you're lacking. If you're not doing that. The next thing I wrote down is. So we're talking about outputs, right? So one output I'm talking about is balance, a balance of life. Then I put fun. Are you having fun in your life? And if you're not having fun in your life, put some damn fun rituals in your life. When I go on that golf trip with my high school buddies, it is fricking fun. So, so fun is going to be an output. Growth is going to be an output. You said a bunch of beautiful specific words. I just call that whole thing growth, spiritual growth, physical growth, whatever the growth is, you're going to grow with rituals. And then the last thing I wrote down is, you know, all work and no play. So that's why it's like think of a balanced wheel, you know, family, friends, personal. Just figure out like that perfect. What's the perfect picture balance in Life for you? 10 year thinking doesn't happen tomorrow, but work toward this. Figure out the perfect allocation of time with all of the people in your life, including yourself. What's the perfect balance? And develop rituals to make that balance a reality.
Rob Dube
I'm curious. In business, do you have a favorite ritual that comes up for you?
Gino Wickman
What is it? So my. My clarity break. My two hour clarity break every week, sitting in a Starbucks. Oh my God, you would not believe how giddy I get driving to that coffee shop and sitting there for those two hours. I mean, like, I'm feeling the energy right now. The energy is like ridiculous. It's a creative energy. But that is probably my favorite business ritual, so I'll stop there.
Rob Dube
Yeah, I love that. We had a ritual at Image one when I used to run it at the end of our quarter, quarterly planning session and annual planning session. And we'd had our goals all set, our racks, and then we would just go like this. I'm putting my arms up and I'm going to like snap my hands open. And we would just say, all right, now we're all just putting it out there and we go poof.
Gino Wickman
And by the way, there's a ritual.
Rob Dube
We all did it.
Gino Wickman
And by the way, quarterlies and annuals, there's a ritual. If you're running a business out there and you're not doing quarterlies and annuals oh, man. Get that ritual going because that's going to make a huge impact on you. That's a ritual.
Rob Dube
Absolutely. Any other thoughts?
Gino Wickman
I've got nothing else.
Rob Dube

Episode 108: The Power of Rituals: Creating Rhythm in Your Life
Hosts: Gino Wickman & Rob Dube
Date: April 1, 2026
This episode centers on how rituals, both big and small, shape our experiences, keep us grounded, and help us reconnect with what truly matters. Gino and Rob explore rituals from all facets of life—spiritual, personal, relational, and business—and discuss how intentional repetition creates a healthy rhythm that balances, energizes, and expands our lives.
Both hosts stress—the goal is not to copy their rituals, but to find your own, and pay attention to how they help you balance, enjoy, and grow in all areas of life. Rituals offer a reliable rhythm, bringing intention and meaning to the everyday.
Action Item: After listening, take a moment to jot down at least five rituals you already do. Consider which areas of your life could use more rhythm, balance, or fun, and experiment with new rituals to support those needs.
