Very like, okay, I haven't actually had that, but I'm just using metaphorical example of an emotional rash. But, like, you would be like, okay, we've got this 1000% okay. It's like always. We're always fixing.

I'm very good at helping others. Not really. Maybe taking my own personal advice. No, that's true.

I always feel like it's like with Aaron, it's. It's like soothing. Yeah, it's like the soothing.

It's very neutral. I see both sides. I'm very much the. Okay, well, let's look at it from their point of view.

Yeah. And I'm like, no, no, no.

I live with this one over here with her opinions. I wish I had strong opinions like that.

The other day, you were like, such a cheerleader for me, and I was, like, jacked up off it. I was like, I know. Turbo speed.

So I was like. I was like my dad. I was like, PA and miracle. I was like, it's your time. Yeah.

It's your speech. It's a good. Come to me for the calming speech. Come to cape for the. What do you come to me for? Nothing. To feel better about yourself. Yes. To feel better about yourself.

You are the best cheerleader. You are the best cheerleader. You're the puppet. You always make me feel like I've contributed enough. Meaning, like that. Like, I like. You make me. You remind me that I have made some contribution in the world. Like, what I need to feel that. You know what it's like? It's like. It's like in soap dish when Whoopi Goldberg takes Sally Field to the mall because she's feeling down, and she takes her to the mall and is like, you know, just so she can get noticed. That's how I feel sometimes. Like, if I was feeling down, you'd be like, come on, we're going to the mall.

I feel like Mary is very positive and girl, like, supportive vibes. Always best compliments. Like, makes you feel like a million dollars as people.

Which is important, you know, you think about it. Because you're like, have high standards.

Yeah. And I definitely not that hit the jackpot. Well, yes, but not for any. Not for any other reason, except just because they're my brothers. Was definitely hyper. Ready to judge.

You know, you're like, you go in kind of like. Okay, you're like, you go. And like, you know, and we have all people who, like, loves everybody. Although I have to say, I didn't have any, like, thing to. I. I feel like it was super easy when we first met, when Aaron and I first met, like, you were.

Just starting to date. It was your 21st birthday.

First birthday, you're just starting to date. Chris, Ollie and I were not together yet.

But we met in the kitchen.

Kitchen at my parents house.

Your parents house now Jackie and Adam's house. And you were on the phone and put him on speakerphone. And Ollie and I had walked in the kitchen, just friends. And she was like, ollie, like, this is my new boyfriend. Like, say hi, Chris.

I like, met him like six hours, literally.

And there's Chris Robinson on the phone, like, from the Black Crows. And she's like, yeah. And it was her 21st birthday. And then I walk in, you guys had a band going. Okay. Vanessa was like, on the bongo drums. Oh. Oh, my gosh, Boston, you're singing. Ollie's singing. It was like a whole vibe. And Vanessa was like, stunning, beautiful. Oliver's ex. I walked in and was like, oh, she's in the family band. This is serious. I don't even sing to myself in the shower or alone in the car. Like, this was like a whole music situation going on. And I just thought, okay, this is. We're gonna be friends. We're just gonna have friendship. And then, you know, cut to. They broke up. And, you know.

But what was the bath story?

Oh, so that was Oliver and I. Your parents were out of town. You were maybe home.

Like, still. This is like your childhood home. And we had decided to have like a date night at his house in your parents bathtub. So we had like.

And it's a gorgeous tub with like steps up to it, like a big built in tub. We're in there literally candles lit. It's probably like Arlie has like R and B music playing. Like you name it. It's like a vibe. And Kate's like, knock, knock, knock. Hey guys, can I come in? And I'm like trying to put bubbles around like my boobs. I'm like, oh my God, what's happening? She comes in and sits down on the step, like with us. Bas.

Yes. I just like get in the bathroom.

She's like, hi. And she starts like talking.

I'm like, so anyway, anyways, so Chris.

But it was like stories and chatting away and the whole time I'm like shriveling up in the bathtub. Never mind. And I'm like, am I gonna like get out with her here? Like I'm gonna be naked in front of her. What's happening? Cut to. I, like the next time I see her, I'm in the shower at Ollie's. Okay. Like taking a shower. She comes in and sits down on toiletries to go pee.

So I had met the family, everybody else. I don't. I think you Were working at Aaron and Ollie's house and I was so nervous. Whatever. We had dinner and I was just like holding my breath all the time, like, oh, my God.

Oh my God. But it was amazing. But it was awkward. It was like me, Ollie, Goldie, Kurt, and you and Wyatt come into my house and everyone's like, hey, you know, there she is, so cute, like bringing in like a cute gift. And like, I think you had on like jean, like high waisted, gorgeous jeans or overalls or just something so cute and stylish. And immediately I was like, oh, my God. I feel her energy. Like, I know this feeling. So I was like, we're gonna make this great.

So sweet. And I was just like, she. But everyone was so great. And I was like, but why? I just like shut down. Like, I remember he wasn't like, here. He wasn't like giving me a bone. He just was like, he had. He turned into like, he like throw.

You to the wall.

He's like through. He's like, let's see how she handles this.

[Meredith]

I'll never forget this. He was like, like he turned into like a 16 year old, like, boy. And I was like, hot dog shirt on. And then those like straight guy jock, like, mesh long shorts. I don't know where he got them. I borrowed them from Ollie or something.

I was just gonna say it sounds like Ollie.

[Meredith]

And I had like a candle and then I wrapped it in twine and then I put rosemary on it. And like I had put so much thought into my. Like, I. Meredith. Like, here's a candle. Like, do I bring candy? Do I bring candle?

Oh, you did, you brought candy. You brought like, what do they call it?

[Meredith]

I'm so nervous and. Because it had been a while we were together a while. Anyway, he comes to the door, he's like, hey. And just kind of like walks in and then like goes and sits like I'm. I'm left to my own devices. Thank you. So I was like. My story with you, Kate was obviously like, it's Kate Hudson. Like, and I'm like, when I'm comfortable, I'm so me. But like, if I get. And you guys now know me well enough is like, if I get geeked or awkward or something, it's like, it's. It is. It's like my entire career is based around this feeling of just being like.

Maybe turns into like a common comedy routine, literally.

[Meredith]

And so I don't like, smoke that much. See, the best rare for me because I'll have like a bad experience and Then it's like five years later and I'm like, oh, God. But Ollie, I wanted to be like, cool. I got. I flew to Aspen. And Ollie was like, oh, they're all out watching a movie. Like, they won't be back till late. I was like, perfect. He's like, so let's have. Let's smoke a joint. And then I was like, great, we'll smoke a joint. We'll go to the guest house and then I'll meet everybody tomorrow. This is perfect. I had like a 14 hour travel day and I smoked a joint and got really high. And all of a sudden, like, the whole family comes rushing in.

And I never met kitchen lighting.

I remember super, super stoned.

[Meredith]

And I was like, stunned and so awkward. And I just got so high and I started to get, like, so paranoid that I just started speaking in greeting cards. So you were talking to me about someone you were like, dating at the time. And I was like, well, home is where the heart is. Like, I just kept think. I just kept being like, well, you know, you. I was like, why am I speaking? Like.

You did another one that was like, shoot for the star or something. That was so funny. I don't remember what which one it was, but you said a couple lines. We were laughing about it the next day because you came in the room and you were like, oh, my God.

It was so funny.

We're down in the kitchen again, like, kind of like a sexy, you know, like, moment. We're home. I'm like, sitting up on the kitchen counter, toast that goes together for me. And in walks your mom and Kurt. But it was like, second time. I had kind of had a moment with Kurt already, but, like, they walked in from being out as well, and your mom just breezed in in, like, a white tight ribbed tank top with no bra, gold jewelry glistening, coming right in. Hi, honey. Oh, yes, great. Can I have some of your toast? Like, starts eating my toes, chatting away with me, talking, like, we've met before. Like, I'm just kind of there, like, no big deal, so casual, so comfortable. And just all of a sudden I'm like, oh, my God, I'm meeting A, I'm meeting his mom, which I'm like, late night, sitting on a counter. And then I'm like. And B, I'm meeting Goldie Hawn. Like, wait, what's happening right now? And it was just like she just breezed in, talking, took a bite of my toast, and, like, continued on.

And so it was like. Were you surprised that it was so casual that she didn't have any? Yeah.

And with both of them, what I will say. And I say this to everybody that asks. I look sometimes and I'm like, Goldie is from Maryland, right? Grew up in the East Coast. Kurt, you know, got some east coast in him with Maine and, you know, his upbringing and traditional kind of, you know, being raised in the same way. They're so grounded in the sense of what they do is their job. And what I noticed in the very beginning, I would say, like, the first year is like, we'd be on vacation together. We'd be at dinner Never did. Like, not never, but, like, rarely. Movies or work or jobs would come up.

Yeah.

It was everything else.

It's so interesting.

The kids and, you know, travels and politics and life. And once in a while, it would be, you know, this little comment, oh, I'm gonna go do this movie, or maybe I'm auditioning for this part. But the difference of, say, like, how Meredith and I grew up, it was like, even just getting an audition, it was like, basically blasted in, like.

Right.

My family and the news and, like, everything. And you get a little tiny part on something, and you're basically. Your parents think you're Julia Roberts, you know, and then you walk into a family.

Not my family icons, and.

Yeah. And they're like, oh, you're girl number one on csi. You know, whatever. And I would be embarrassed to even, like, say anything, but they were very proud of me. You know, they would still be excited and like, oh, my God, that's amazing. And, you know, they just had a sense of family first. Always.

Yeah.

Still.

And the fact that they. You kind of like. Yeah. I think it's interesting to hear, like, what your preconceived idea of something would be versus, like, what it ends up being, you know, because I used to call my. I used to call my parents the closers. Right. It was like, whenever I was, like, had a guy that I liked and I brought them home, it was like, usually that person was always like, I want to be a part of this family.

It's like the deal closer. Exactly.

Yeah.

[Kate Hudson]

Yeah. They were sort of like, you know.

Yeah. The energy, the laughter, the humor, the self deprecation, the, you know, or not taking anything too seriously, the sense of kind of fun, and the business that they're in, no one took too seriously. But yet they're the most iconic, you know, Incredible.

It's also a little different now. Like, when you met mom and pop, which was now 25. Five years ago.

Yeah.

They were like, partying all the time. Oh, totally. They were like, having. You know, they were like, they're not as party. They're not as party centric as they used to be.

Yeah, no, they were, like, hosting parties, coming home from parties, going out there was always a little more of that vibe. I know.

Yeah. Meredith met when the parties sort of started subsiding. And I met Kurt. There were more grandkids.

And on his 50th.

This is like, right around the same time of your 21st in a way, that same, you know, year or whatever. And, yeah, he walked in from work. There was a whole, like, surprise party and all that kind of stuff going on. And then I did my 50th at that house again.

And I went and had my 50th there. It's, like, so full circle.

That is crazy. Oh, okay. Who is the easiest to connect with.

In the fam?

Yeah, you go first, because you, like, out of your parents or of the whole family.

Okay. So I met Wyatt when he was 13, so I'm gonna go with Wyatt because he was a little teenager. No, I mean, obviously me. Obviously you.

No, I was gonna say, I'm like, come on.

First of all, there was the everybody. You would think it would be so intimidating. And you were. But you weren't. At the same time, I was like, this girl is wearing zero makeup, doesn't give a fuck, and still looks hot as hell. So gorgeous, so comfortable. And it was like, immediately we had been friends for, like, 15, 20 years. She's talking to me, telling me things. Open. So, like, there was a little comfort in that, I will say. And then you disappeared and you were gone. Traveling the world, marrying rockstar, and then having a baby. So I was like, okay, I guess that's not going to be there for me now. So where do I go?

What about you, Mare?

[Meredith]

It wasn't anything to do with you not being easy to connect with, Kate, but I was like, the girl. I'm. I was like the other. The new woman in Wyatt's life, which is a tricky one, like, to come into, you know, and I was this new girlfriend, and, like, without going into too much, but. But save it for another podcast I really respect, too, which is just, like, you are on some level, like, how do you not. When it's your siblings being like, especially another actress, it's like we've all been conditioned to be like, how are. What are people's intentions? And you were so sweet. But it didn't. It was just. It was just as it should be. Like, not an immediate, like, welcome to the fam. Like, it shouldn't be that. That's not actually healthy or natural. And I feel like my connection with everybody really grew very naturally over time in a way that Aaron felt the least. Like you were. You were just like, I've been.

I was like, come, come. Come here, little one. Let me take you in.

Come, come with your family for Me, it was such a. Like, obviously iconic. These actors, everybody. But I. I really had fallen so hard in love with Wyatt that, like, I only. It was like my brain couldn't make sense of it other than just like, these are just the person that I love's parents.

It wasn't. It was almost like if it was my friend dating somebody or like, I'd be like, oh, my God, it's who. But because I just loved Wyatt so much. And there's that familiar, like, my God, it's so loud. But there's that familiar, like that. We all know that feeling of just.

Well, you're still meeting in laws. You're meeting in laws and sister, no matter what is gonna get. You know what I mean?

Like, just anybody deals with that to get to know. Yeah, but I mean, but even this. Take the. Take that part out of the equation. Like, what was. What. What. Who was the first person that you felt like the. Like a. Like a connection with in the family? Like.

Yeah, Aaron.

Oh, yeah. I mean, well, first of all, we're both grew up very similar, like, east coast, you know, the parents, a lot of similarities there. But you're also. It's like, okay, wait, you're the sister in law in this family. Give me the fucking download. I was like, hold on. Let me just break down everybody for you. So these are their issues. These are.

This is what Thanksgiving is gonna look like.

Be prepared for this and. And honestly, be prepared for a really fucking good time. The great thing about Mira was you have the best, like, presence and energy. Everybody fell in love with you in literally three seconds. And also, everybody saw how in love you were. Like, why it was with you.

You guys are different. You know what I mean? Like, me and Ollie, he was still so young. We're dating. You're traveling the world. Like, Wyatt's off playing hockey. Like, you know what I mean?

I did a lot to live up to after.

The picture that came up was one that later, Meredith told me about because she had gotten this sprayed tan. And I remember looking at this picture and I was going like, okay, okay, okay.

And I was like, all right. Like, it's, you know, okay. She's really cute. She's a little like, it's a very strong orange. Strong tanner.

And felt like I thought I looked so hot that night that I swear to God I was like, we could look back.

I love that. That's the. When I, when I had to like go and try to find it, like those were the pictures that came up and it was like, oh God. It just. That was my favorite thing ever. I feel like we all have very different parenting styles.

[Meredith]

I feel like I'm still new enough as a mom where I'm like, is this a style?

[Kate Hudson]

Meredith's like, what style do I have?

[Meredith]

What's the style?

[Kate Hudson]

Well, here I'll just happiness. Start by saying survival. Survival and happiness. Survival. Happiness is Kate was like, I Don't even know. What were you when you had Ryder? 24.

Yeah.

So literally a baby having a baby. But what's interesting is you and I had our babies kind of right together. So you're thrown into this, like, toddler and a newborn and the craziness. And Kate, like elegantly had these, like seven years apart, so she was like a different mom to each kid.

I will say, that's such a cool.

[Meredith]

Way of looking at it.

[Kate Hudson]

It's so cool. And like, the evolution of. You've become as a mother, as a mother, so amazing. And like, I think that's the beauty of it, you know, because sometimes you're like, do you have babies close together? It's good for the kids, blah, blah, blah. But again, my positive outlook, it's all interesting.

Yeah.

Each kid amazed, you know, had this like kind of real one on one time, which is beautiful. And you got to evolve. I mean, you were in your 20s with Ryder, literally your 30s, basically with Bing and Ronnie, you know, now in 40s. But also just the evolution of what you learn from each kid, what changes in the world of parenting. And then also just having the two boys and then getting the girl, which we both have. Which we both have. And we're gonna, we're gonna manifest a little baby girl. So we have the two boys and the girls and the family.

[Meredith]

I'm so happy. We'll obviously probably have a boy, so we'll just, we're gonna put some.

[Kate Hudson]

But I do think if you look.

Back, that's what I said until I. It was time to find out what it was. I was like, it's fine if it's a boy. And then I was like, no, it's not.

I did the same thing.

I'm like, pregnant. I'm like, wait a minute. If this is a boy, it actually, I'll have a moment of tears. Tears. Like I, I will. And then of course, you love it. It's like, yeah, like you love the baby. You, you, you know, of course, of.

Course, five boys and be.

It hit me like two months into my pregnancy, I was like, oh.

So mine hit me. This is another boy. So we went for the third. You know, our story, like the first two we didn't try. It was just very lucky. Got pregnant. Third one, I was like, I'm gonna be 40. Are we doing this? Should we. Blah, blah, blah. Let's go for it. Did a few, like, things to try, you know, time of the month and this and that, whatever. And my doctor was like, just make sure you want A third kid actually think about having a boy. Do you want three boys? And I was like, I actually do because I love being boy. Mom. You're the only one. Girl, like, it's just great. I was like, okay. He goes, because I don't care what you do and what you try. You're. You know what I mean? There's a very good chance you're gonna have a third boy. Don't do this because you want the girl. And I was like, yeah, no, not at all. And then I thought to myself, I really want a girl for Ollie, okay? Because, like, I'm so close with my dad. I think he would be such an amazing girl. Dad this and that. That's when it started to creep up. So I was like, it's just in the little thought in the back of my head, but I was prepared for the boy. I remember I peed on the stick to see if I was pregnant. The two lines popped up, and I was like, oh, I hope it's a girl. I had this, like, wave of emotion come up.

I was like, God, oh, my God.

It's already done. Like, we already. It's happened. It's. It's figured out. It's already done. There's nothing else I can do. And it was that first real wave where I admitted to myself, yeah. Oh, my God. I kind of.

My doctor was right. I'll be devastated.

And I went in and I told him, and I was like, it worked. And he goes, did it?

Did it really?

He's like, you never know. He's like, you can think. It did. And he's like, but really is that. It's just left to. To Mother Nature.

But. But it's so funny because, like, our parent. I think our parenting styles are very different. To go back to, like, oh, yeah, for sure. And. And. But Aaron and I have a very similar thing, which is we're super anxious when it comes to the kids doing it. Like, Aaron and I, like, when they were, like, BMXing, we'd be. We would, like, hide in each other's necks.

I'd be like, don't look. Don't look.

Look. Trampolines. Oh, God.

Dirt bikes, skateboarding. Like, it's like, Aaron and I just.

Like, go into the kitchen. We're just like, okay, I have to leave this area.

Go make a martini. And, yeah, ignore that.

They're doing things that are crazy.

I always said, like, she has the musical kids. And I was like, I just want my boys to, like, play an instrument and be in a band because they're gonna be nice and safe playing the clarinet.

And instead they're like, yeah, they're like.

Jumps off of trails.

[Meredith]

I mean, Aaron playing the clarinet and it's oh my God.

[Kate Hudson]

But you get what you're like supposed to have.

But mayor, like, you know, then I see mayor with her kids and they're like, you know, like climb. Climbing up the bed and they're like climbing on the concrete.

And I'm like.

Yes.

[Meredith]

They're just constant mental mathematics. And this is might be fun.

[Kate Hudson]

I'm not good at math.

[Meredith]

So my thing is, can you die from this? And if the answer is yes, I get fucking so anxious. So like, I get really anxious about like car seats. I get anxious about pools. I can't even want to buy a house with a pool. So I get crazy. If I. If I can only if my brain goes to a broken bone, twisted ankle, splinter.

[Kate Hudson]

If there's a splinter, we're out.

[Meredith]

Yourself.

[Kate Hudson]

I'm like, stop it.

[Meredith]

What's wrong?

[Kate Hudson]

I know.

[Meredith]

Really bad can happen. I am like, I will wake up in the middle of the night and panic like choking like batteries, blueberries, popcorn, like the things that pop into my head. But I just. I. Yeah, I. I don't. I don't.

[Kate Hudson]

I was really proud of myself as a sister in law because I literally. I just showed Aaron this video of me like bird feeding Rani. And I was eating well, really. She was eating from my mouth, which was even. Even funnier because I'm eating my food and she was just going right like a monk, like a monkey. She's going right into my mouth, taking my food and eating it from my mouth. And I was like, this is very. I mean she's kind of gross. But I literally like bird fed my kids. I. I mushed everything. I.

Well, you have a choking. We all have our triggers and our things. Choking is the biggest one is.

Is the joke. But mayor does that you do the. The self baby led weaning the baby living. And I literally like my cortisol levels. We're like, I can't spaghetti. I'm like, oh my God, I can't.

Like piece of chicken or something.

I know I had Boone in my arm of the day and.

[Meredith]

And he circle anxiously around like the area. And I'm like, well, I know we're all everyone.

[Kate Hudson]

Oh, everybody has their own thing. And but then like Boone. I was with Boone by myself.

Like, don't you want to chop?

And then. And he was like, you know, wanted the app, wanted an apple and I was eating an Apple. And I was like, oh, God, I'm gonna give him an apple. I was like, oh, my God, I'm gonna do it. I was like, I'm gonna do it because I can. Because it's not my child.

It's their child.

And he. They. And they give him apples, and I. So I, like, cut it up. I cut him, like, a piece of apple, and I gave it to him. And he's just. He's so happy, and he's shoving the whole thing in his mouth, and I'm just, like, having a heart attack.

It's so.

Cuz I was really proud of myself, cuz I'm proud of you.

Me, too. Baby steps. Baby steps. Ronnie's going to be seven, so.

Yeah, no, she's on. She. She just started solid.

I wasn't gonna say it on air, but now that it's out there.

Yeah, we've gone from Cream of Wheat to oatmeal. It's a big year. Oh. But. So. Yeah. So. So. And. And then.

But having boys, I will say a lot of boy moms out there would agree you do have to kind of let them go and let him get hurt. Ollie was so good at that. He was such a balance for me, where he's like. Like, babe, they're boys. Let them go. And I was like, okay. I'll be stuck in my misery of being, you know, fearful.

[Meredith]

I also. I have this theory, too, and it's not a theory. It's just what I found works. If I'm too. No, no, no. Don't do that about things that aren't that dangerous.

[Kate Hudson]

You're gonna give them anxiety.

[Meredith]

So psycho about, like, the street and the pool, and my voice gets firm, and I. And I just. I have this thing with Buddy where it's like, he now knows this is serious. And this is also something where it's like, hey, be careful jumping on that. You could hurt yourself. Is it different than.

[Kate Hudson]

Yes. And you're not putting it on to them? Like, that's what I had to learn. I learned that in therapy. I also learned that when Wilder captured with his bare hands a tarantula that we brought home in my car. And I have, like, pretty much a pretty good case of arachnophobia.

[Meredith]

And I've never seen anything like your arachnophobia.

[Kate Hudson]

It's pretty bad. And so I had a pet tarantula, and Oliver looked at me, and he. And I said, we're not bringing that thing home. He's like, yes, we are. You're not going to crush his Dreams. He's already named it Harry. So we brought it home and went to Petco and got a, you know, container thing to put it in. Crickets to feed it. We brought it home and I made sure that lock, like, basically could never come off. And Ollie looked at me and he said this great thing. He goes, don't transfer your, you know, fear of spiders onto the kids. He's a little boy. Like, let him be. So then we had a snake that.

Ended up dying, which was not our fault because I was being very good about it, but it was quite sick. And it was. So I took it to the. The snake. The place. And he's like, yeah, it's not very well. Like, we'll give you another snake. We got another. Same snake. Another snake. And then one day, I woke up and the snake was gone. It was in Ryder's room. Snake gone.

And it got into the house.

It got out.

We have no idea where Claudia is with you. No idea. That snake could be living in the air ducts. And we.

Absolutely no idea.

That was such a delayed ducks. It was a delayed response on my part. Yeah. Like, what is going on? I. Like, I didn't realize what was going on on. And then. Oh, that's funny. I can't wait to see that snake is gone. You guys, It's.

I never found it.

Such a. Like, you're always constantly. Probably. Is that the kind of thing that, like, once every month pops into your head like, where's the thing?

Yeah, of course. And I mean, it's probably. I'm assuming, would be dead by now.

Because you wouldn't be able Figured out food or. Yeah.

But I also was like. Had to tell Ryder. I was like, honey, that this one got sick too, and I had to take him back because I didn't want to say, like, he got out and.

Could be in your room somewhere and pop up in the.

And so I just. And then every night before I would go to bed, I'd be like, what if the snake, like, you know, they hear those crazy stories where, like, it strangles the. So. So then I started vagina.

Yeah. Oh, my God.

Oh. So I put like, snake. It was a whole thing, but we got through it. And for sure. He's 21. He survived.

[Meredith]

I got through it. Nothing.

[Kate Hudson]

You're gonna. We just wait. We had, like, geckos, snakes, tarantulas. I don't Know what, buddy and Boo, you're gonna be into.

[Meredith]

I was a real.

[Kate Hudson]

You do. That's right. That's right.

[Meredith]

I'm like. It's. It's one of my sexiest qualities.

[Kate Hudson]

Yeah.

Yeah.

[Meredith]

I just want to say you're both such good moms. Be moms. Because there's stuff. There's so many, like, nuanced depths to the experience of motherhood and new motherhood that, like, I'm only now feel like I'm processing feeling, and I've. I've started just having such a love and respect, especially for you guys and the moms in my life that. That really do inspire me. And, like, nobody ever talks about being a mom is like, embracing your unique gifts as a human being and just being that for your kids. Like, watching you, Kate, this last, like, Easter time, and, like, I just felt like you're so in. You're such. This, like, authentic. I was telling you this, but this, like, authentic place and watching your kids and this beautiful family that you've built, that's, like, messy and complicated and gorgeous and fun and just, like, felt like everything was, like, clicked in this, really. And just watching you be so authentically you and then sharing that with your kids and creating magic, that's not like, homogenized magic or, like, some idea of motherhood that you feel like you need to, like, be your you and your you.

[Kate Hudson]

You.

[Meredith]

Ness is that gift to your kids. And it's the same with you, Erin. It's like neither of you have lost. It's. It's like my favorite thing to talk about right now because I feel so in it with the baby, so little, but, like, I just love watching each of you be fucking yourself. And, like, that's like. To be yourself.

[Kate Hudson]

You know, it's funny you're saying this, because I was just talking about this being, you know, when you go through these different stages of your kid's life, right? So it's like you have. You're in the sort of, you know, baby, toddler years, and then you have the teen years, and then, you know, then you have the adulthood. And. And the thing that. The thing that I've noticed is that you want them. Your. This unique thing is really only seen by them when they get older because you want them to want a different kind of, like, as much as they love you. Like, it's actually a very human response for children to be like, oh, that life looks interesting. Oh, but what about those people over there? That's an interesting life, too. Like. Like, it's actually Good for them to look outside of the family, to experience something else. And sometimes they kind of reject you because they want to go discover something new.

Right?

And that's a super normal response to, like, teenage years. And when they're growing and individuating, then they get to be 21, like Ryder, they get to be older, and they get to reflect and start their. Their young adult life of, like, what do I want to be? Who do I? And then they get to really see you, and that's when you go like, oh, wait, I think I did a good job. He. He likes me.

Yes.

You know, he liked his childhood.

True.

It's. It's really interesting.

You're in the moment and just going on that, right? You're going off instinct. You know, you might be. Nowadays, there's so many podcasts and things, and you can learn, but really, you're learning just like kids do by watching. So you see your mom, friends, you know, you see your family, people that had kids before you, and you're like, ooh, I want to do it like that, or, ooh, I don't know if I would do that. You know, you're kind of soaking it all in as you go, but then you're thrown into the fire. And sometimes the plan that you think, you know, the way you're gonna mother or parent goes, you know, completely off the tracks due to who your kid is. And so adapting to kind of who your child is and still being able to be kind of, you know, who you are is interesting. And each kid is gonna be different and kind of challenge you in those different ways. But on our end, you're looking at us, right? Cause you're in it right now, and you're like, wow, okay, two people to look up to and kind of their children and who they are. And we parents, very different, easy, amazing. But you. We look back, I mean, you're still in it, obviously. Rani is still, you know, little, but I can look so fondly and say, talk about doing things instinctually and authentically. I mean, that is you to the core. You are, like, so just naturally, like an incredible mom. And I'm gonna sing your praises right now because I think it's true. But you are who you are. You're an amazing boy mom, because you are all about adventure and all about kind of, you know, creating joy, which is who you are in your real life. Like when you. When Wyatt came home telling us about you, the first, you know, moment, it was this girl that. I can't describe it. I just Want to be around her.

And he.

He is somebody who's, you know, kind of more internal. I mean, maybe now, obviously not with the family, but he was watching Talk.

About Wyatt for a good 10 minutes just to, like, make him incredibly uncomfortable.

Exactly. Wyatt Russell. He was walking down the street with you.

He's an avenger now. He has to be more open.

Anyways, my point was, he was like, I want to be around her. She's magnetic. And you pulled him in to do karaoke, like, walking down a street on a bar.

Yeah. And we were like, stories.

Like, she was like, let's go. Let's go do karaoke. He's, like, spontaneous. Doesn't feel like Wyatt going in and doing, like, karaoke in a bar. You know what I mean? But there he was, and he's like, I'm doing all this because I wanted. She makes me want to do it. Right. So that's who you are. That's who you are for us. Right? You're fun.

He also said to me before we met you, too. What was that? He was like, she. I know who. I know her. Like, I know this person. This is familiar. Familiar to me.

And he was just like, you're gonna love her. Like, I remember him when you're gonna. You're gonna love.

Well now, Kate, it's so funny because I feel so close to you now, especially after, like, the fire and like, that. It is this weird thing where you're like, wow, I would be. Be really good friends. We would be great friends.

Even if I wasn't. And you, too, Aaron. It's so lucky to feel that. I mean, it's so rare where I'm like, why? Who? Like, there's times where I'm like, oh, yeah, like.

So great. And we all. It's like, the best.

I'm so happy. I'm kind of so grateful that my brothers were so smart. Thank God.

Right now. But I also think that, like, I don't know, there's so much about motherhood that I don't know. I was so scared I didn't have. My sister obviously doesn't have kids. And I hadn't been around babies ever. Almost. Rio and Bing were the two little kids that I had been around, and they made me so excited and watching you guys be mothers. But also, it is so singular. It's your own experience. And I just Wasn't prepared for how healing it is. And I get to kind of like this, like, re parenting intentional. That said that you also are. Like, there is no right. Like, there's no doing it right. There's just this desire to love my kids and not. I don't know. I also don't think there's enough, like, cultural narrative around. And it's easy to say this when you're privileged and you have access to childcare, which is a really big thing. Like, I wouldn't be able to be shooting this right now if I didn't have, like, an amazing nanny. Gaga, who was both with you guys, like, helping me. Like, she has my kids right now. I can go to work and be with you guys and keep my meanness when I need to tap into that, like, but so true. Nobody talks about how fun it is, like, motherhood. So fun to have kids because it's.

[Kate Hudson]

Not so, so awful. You make it fun. Here's what I'll say. I look back in fondness, as I was starting to say before, because I wasn't having as much fun as you are, and I look and I'm like, God damn it, if I could go back.

Well, that's because of your anxiety.

Yeah.

It was just, you know, it was just a different time. But I look back at you and I'm like, oh, my God, you have.

I wasn't so much fun because I was so nervous. Like, am I doing it right? Is this what to do? And then even eating all that stuff, and I'm like, yeah, can we die? Like, let's have some fun.

Exactly.

I was.

Oh. I was like, I took Ryder. Ever I had Ryder.

I. I started your free spirit vibe. That transferred into being a free spirit mom. Even though you were so strict, Very strict and very, very tough, you still had that free spirit of like, let's go, let's travel. Like, you didn't say super structured.

You know what I mean? You were like, like, instinctually, like, you.

Know, more like mayor.

In the fact that we would. I would travel and take the kids everywhere. I never went. I don't go anywhere without my kids.

I still am sort of like that. I. I kind of.

It's not. It's not natural to want to. I mean, it's like, it's. You're. They're your cubs. You.

Yeah, yeah.

I'm like, what am I doing? Every time I'm away? Every once in a while with. With Danny, like, when we have a trip together, I feel like we need it. Like, I was like, oh, wow, that feels really nice. But when I'm not after like three or four days, I'm like, what am I doing? Yeah, all I want to do is be with my kids, you know?

What is the most challenging thing for you as a parent? If you could, I know there's a lot, but if you could really take like, like almost like in a relationship when there's like a core issue. What is that core thing for you as a, as a mom? That is the most challenging for me?

[Meredith]

It's like the constant just me feeling like it's my job to manage my emotions and like be in the like parenting myself along with my kids. Which I know is because it is like there's moments where you wanna. I don't. I want to be in possession of my emotions and I want them to not feel like they're responsible for my feelings. And so that is really hard and really challenging. And that is actually when I've been too like martyr. I don't need help. I need to do it by myself. That's when it starts to get harder and wear on me.

[Kate Hudson]

I Love that. I love that answer.

[Meredith]

That's something I. That I find challenging. But in the challenge is such a.

[Kate Hudson]

Yes, it's healing, like you said, healing.

[Meredith]

And it's so, like, I love anything that that's making you grow, you know?

[Kate Hudson]

So I love that answer.

What about you, E?

[Kate Hudson]

I feel the same, so I totally agree. I would say, you know, you're so in the thick of it, so to even be able to be aware of that is incredible. Again, another thing that I think is amazing about you, just in this motherhood journey, you're so present, but I would say I battle a little bit of not wanting to put my anx, you know, like, anxiety or, you know, that kind of stuff onto them. And I find, obviously, Oliver was an incredible balance with that. But I do it with humor. I try to be aware of that kind of stuff. But it is a challenge, like, with the boys, and they do risky things. So, like, obviously, you know, they're downhill, mountain biking, going off of jumps. They're riding, you know, motorcycle, dirt bikes, skiing. I mean, they're crazy skiers, all of that kind of stuff. Right. But also, just in life, I want them to be aware, you know, and so just, you know, trying to do that, I think, without making them so nervous. I want them to go off and do all of those things and not hold them back. But I would say that's my biggest challenge.

Yeah, I agree with that, too. It's like, I also feel like, too, it's like, the more you trust them, the more that they trust themselves.

And I always say, I trust you guys. It's usually either Mother Nature or other people around them that you don't trust. But I. I do. No, no, I mean other people. Oh, I don't trust the other people. Yeah. Because, like, you know, in therapy or whatever, I learned as long as you have kind of instilled in them the information and the safety that they need to know. Right. If it's little kids crossing a street, if it's little, the boys and they have on their helmets and they know what to do in an emergency, blah, blah, blah, then you got to let them go. That's just it.

It's really like you controlling your fears.

Exactly.

Being in.

Yeah. Yep.

I love that, too. I, I, I relate to all.

Or even just, like, say, having a girl, too. Like, with Rio, there'll be certain things where I'm like, bite your tongue. Like, just not want to fix things.

[Meredith]

For them, the girl.

[Kate Hudson]

And, like, well, also just not even getting into the girl. That could be A whole nother podcast. Daughters. But not wanting to fix something.

Yeah, right.

Or doing it. Like, sometimes I want to, you know, fix something because I see it in a certain way, but she loves it in that way. And I'm like, just let her love it that way. It's beautiful. So I, I'm a little more conscious, I think, of what's my feeling or opinion that I'm going to put off on them and trying to let them just have their own.

Yeah.

And let it be, you know, not.

I asked the question. And then I'm trying to think of what my core thing is. I don't have an answer. But if I was to just kind of go off the top of, would say my core challenge as a mother would be to not feel like I have to take it all on. Like, I have a tendency to feel like I can do everything. I can be the mom, I can be the dad. I can organize, I can, I can structure. I can be there best friend. I could be there. I could be their, you know, parent and disciplinarian. And I, I. It really hit me most in Covid because I realized that I had this, like, almost like, type a mothering thing where it was like, I just have to do everything. And then, and then the challenge is then not being upset when I feel like I'm doing everything. So it's like I bring it on myself.

Right.

And then I get upset because I feel like I don't have the help or the support, even though I have a great partner. And it's my biggest challenge is to, like, actually just let sometimes it go go and, like, not be a perfect moment.

[Meredith]

Not all that important all the time.

[Kate Hudson]

Yeah. Like, it's okay if, like, you know. Yes, exactly. And it's okay if someone forgot to make Ronnie's lunch and I forgot to do it and, you know, someone else. It's like, there's moments where I think because I'm so, like, I function at a certain kind of level which might not be normal.

[Meredith]

I've never seen anything like it.

[Kate Hudson]

That it's like, okay, if, like, I, I, I say that, like, it sounds like I'm some sort of uptight person. I'm really, I'm actually not. But, But I do have this thing where I just always feel like I, like, I'm carrying everything, and I think that that's something I do to myself. I don't think that's something that other people are doing to me. And, and, and so it's like, that's the thing you've learned to let that.

Go, I would say. Even just with Rani. Oh yeah. A little bit more.

So much in the last like five years for sure.

[Meredith]

Well, it's also a desire. It's like, it's hard to feel like if you've got 50 things, the amount of stuff I watch you juggle Kate between career and companies and family and I mean, it's crazy. I feel like I etch out my small little chunk and that's all I can handle because I. Because I don't know. I honestly don't know how you do it. But it's true. It's like, I'm sure it feels like if, if one thing falls, then the whole thing will drop. And then realizing like, wait, no, this can be forgotten.

[Kate Hudson]

That's the thing. It works. She's good at it. She knows how to do it. It's just having actually the ability to kind of reflect a little and say, you know what? Like, maybe if I let that go, it's going to make it easier for me and everyone else around me.

And like, and like, I think I over complicated compensate with wanting to be there for the kids and do everything for the kids just based on my own childhood. The fact that, you know, my, my situation with my father, the fact that Gogo was, you know, worked a lot when we were kids and wasn't there as much as sometimes I wanted her to be there. And, and so, so it's like I do all these things, but then I want to be everything for my kids and do everything and sometimes I just need to like, like not be there for the kids. Sometimes I want to be like, it's okay, right? To like not go.

Yes. I mean, look, we all take things from our childhood, which is a perfect example of I think why both you and Oliver are like that. You do not want to be away from your kids. That is literally due to kind of part of your childhood. And, and there was amazing things about your childhood and then there was more harder things. But you kind of learn your parenting style and you're going to take away things we're going to, you know, from our parents also.

[Meredith]

The balance that I'm finding is like impossible. It's like this elusive idea. Like I don't know what balance is. I'd love to meet the person that finds it. I find like momentary feelings of. Today we between 12 and 3, the balance struck.

[Kate Hudson]

I think I can fly back from Vancouver because I'M not. I'm gonna bring the kids and come back for like five days.
