And then he throws a rock at the poster, and it goes through the fucking poster. And he's like, oh, my God. They rip the poster down, and there's a tunnel all the way out of the building.

Were you, like, a fan of Drag Race before you went on it, to be a judge?

So here's. Here's my history with Drag Race, which is interesting, and I'll try to make it really short, which was that in the. In the first couple of seasons, it was right after I'd been on so youo Think youk Can Dance, somebody reached out and said, would you be a judge? And I was really, really. I just didn't want to be behind a desk again. I didn't want to be on TV anymore. I didn't want camera. I wanted people to remember I was a director. I want. I did not want to be a TV personality anymore. And I. And so I said no. And. And then I ended up going out with. And getting engaged. I was with somebody for 13 years who worked in casting on Drag Race and who probably edited Yalls videos.

And he. And he was very. He was like, don't sit behind a desk anymore. Don't sit behind a desk anymore. Anyway, I just never got into Drag Race. I never watched it. It never happened. When I went off and I was shooting Disenchanted in Dublin, Amy Adams, like, all of them, my assistant choreographers, all of that, Everybody was just talking about Drag Race, Drag Race, Drag Race, Drag Race. It was all anybody was talking about. It was during Pandemic, and I was just like, God, y' all are crazy about this show. I went home. I came home from Dublin, and I went, well, we're still in Pandemic. I'm still Locked down. I'm still living alone. I still, like. I'm still isolated. I need something to binge. I was like, I might as well try Drag Race. I put on the first episode, season one.

And you never put it off.

[Adam Shankman]

I didn't turn it off for three weeks, and I hit every episode of every franchise that existed. And about a week and a half in, when I had consumed so much of it, I texted Ru and I said, I get it now. You brought drag into the daylight, and you've done this extraordinary thing, and I cannot fucking believe it. And good on you, and congratulations, basically. And somewhere around then, we talked about, hey, would you ever come on and judge? And I was like, sure. Nothing would make me happier.

Now you're like a Drag Race mainstay now.

[Adam Shankman]

I'm like, three times.

You know, I think you're. You're recurring enough. People are like, oh, we know.

Well, that was the funny. Well, that was the best part is the first time that I did it, I said, oh, I'd love to. I'd love to. And then this is my memory of it. I remember. Oh, I remember what happened. I saw an episode before I went on where Janica Bravo was hosting, and it wasn't. She wasn't judging. She was actually working with the girl. She was directing the girls. And I was like, well, I want to direct the girls.

She directed the.

Out of us directed the girls. And so. So I called Theron, and I was like, you know, it would be. I don't know if there's, like, anything for me to do, but if I'm gonna be on there, is there anything for me to do other than that? Next thing I know, they're like, oh, my God, this is so great. We're putting you on this episode. And now here's your schedule. You don't have one day. You have three days. And I was like, wait, wait, wait, what am I doing? They're like, no, you're gonna choreograph and direct the whole the rusical. And I was like, well, what does that mean?

And then suddenly I'm like in it and, and I didn't really understand, like. Is it commonly understood how that all works?

That's the only thing you see that's of any real consequence on stage when you're making a movie. My feeling is like, no, you got to show all that. You can't. There is no off stage. Like, you know, so I. The second I said like, no, no, you'd go in and you'd see the bathtub full of blood and, you know, all of that, I was like, that was the end of me on that.

And I wanted to shoot it like Fast Times A Ridge Mount High. I wanted to do it really down, dirty, like a movie. Like a rock and roll movie from the 80s. And they were like, no, no, no, no. You're the Hairspray director. You're this guy. You have this. It needs to have all these movie stars. And I was like, please, please, please. They're like, no. And then I conceded and I said, yes. And I. And I regret it. Like, I still wish that I had been able to make. That was my version of the movie was that 16 millimeter down and Dirty Gritty. I mean, I'm. You know, I'm proud of, like, the work that I did with Tom Cruise. There's some really good, fun musical numbers. I loved working with Mary J. Blige. Like, there was, like, some great. Like, I had some great fun making the movie, but it wasn't the movie I wanted to make.

Make your Pinterest more of like, you know, things like that. Start to use cinematic references like dps that you like, you know, directors you like, whatever. And once you have that, and then you can, yeah, you can kind of foment a greater idea that, not that that is about like the bigger picture. Like, and so get a 30, 000 foot view because what you are, is you're, you're living in the details. You're living, you're living in moments. And when you're thinking about telling a bigger picture story, the details should follow the big picture story.

And makes them bigger stars and puts us into people's homes in a different way than Drag Race. And to really understand the full artistry. Not in the little bites that Drag Race does. Not in a competitive environment that is exciting to me. And would I work with World of Wonder again? Of course. Like, I love those guys. Those guys, we get along great. I mean, we, you know, we're like little brother, sister, y. But it's like. Like, I would always. I. I loved working with them, and I love Ru. And I love. You know.
