Melissa Newman was blessed to be born into an artistic family. Primarily an artist and jazz vocalist, she is also a writer and third generation teacher. She lucked into a lucrative career singing jingles, and around the same time began assistant teaching in various disciplines at a women’s correctional facility in New York, a role she would continue in for almost twenty years. She has also continued to lead art and vocal workshops in various other communities. As a visual artist she has designed everything from packaging to theater posters to tattoos, and has shown her porcelain sculptures and paintings in galleries in New York and Connecticut. She also performs with her jazz trio and quartet.

Melissa's Notes from the Sidelines:

Growing up with celebrities, like any larger-than-life parents, can leave one with a feeling of living in shadows.
When you experience good fortune, ask what you can do for the world.
Try not to make assumptions about others; people are almost never what you think they are.
In some scenarios, ego development can leave you wondering if you are important. Remember that you do get to feel important, especially as a mom.
Feeling critical of what you said and did in different situations is totally normal.
Talking to strangers allows you to get out of the ego self and thinking of others.
All kids need to be successful in the world is unconditional love and chores.
Advice learned from Paul and Joanne: respect each other's job and daily accomplishments, have a shared love of music and art, be passionate and sweet to each other, and love each other
Take care of yourself as you age, and stretch!
Everybody has something to offer.
Compliment people.
