Dear Esthetician, I wanted to send a personal message in a time where impersonal is feeling all too common. I'm just like you, an esthetician. I started with a dream. I was actually able to make those dreams a reality. I worked for others who I felt like didn't appreciate my efforts. But I also learned so much in those scenarios that I'm forever grateful for the spa who hired me as a receptionist when I was still in esthetician school. The medical spa that took a chance on me and taught me things that were invaluable, like a free VI peel and dermaplane training. P.S. this was back in 2008 when the VI peel was brand new on the market and no one, I mean no one, had heard of dermaplaning. This is a time when the only social media around was Facebook and I still owned a flip phone. Whoa. After five quick years and the traumatic loss of a loved one at the young age of 23, I decided to work for myself. This is also before the phrase going solo was a thing. I found a cute treatment room that another esthetician friend had recommended and I started working in the back of a salon. I had made it. From that moment on, I promised myself I would never work for anyone again. I'm proud to say I kept that promise to myself. Negative bank accounts, sleepless nights, working seven days a week. Countless amount of people, employees, renters, etc coming in and out of my life. Being a young female business owner came with many lessons of joy and heartbreak. Situations that would and wouldn't work out as I had imagined. Moving locations many times while also having those beautiful aha moments. A loyal clientele that followed me from place to place for years, Starting and growing a podcast, a product line that would inevitably change the course of my entire life. I'm forever grateful to that young girl who followed her dreams and can now sit here and relish in them. Don't stop following your dreams. If your dreams change, that's okay too. Trust yourself. Trust the universe. She might not provide in the way you planned, but what if she could provide something even better than you could imagine? Chase your dreams.
