Hello. Hello. Welcome to Skin in the City podcast. I was just looking at previous episodes and I didn't realize how long it's been since I recorded for you guys. So apologies on making you wait, but I'm glad you're here, if you're still here. I've partially lost my voice. I think I don't know what's happening, but even though my voice isn't fully here, my body is and my mind is and I'm excited just to catch you up on everything that has been going on. I think the last time I posted I was still in preparation for my first official esthetician retreat which was hosted here in downtown la. And it was, it was such a good event. I'm so happy that I did it. As always when I do these things, I'm never sure like what's the response going to be. How is the turnout? Like, especially when I'm like doing something new and we sold out the class. The turnout was amazing. It was just such a fun day of community and self care and it really inspired me to keep going. At first I was thinking that, that maybe I would bring this to Vegas, but for the ICSC show. But it doesn't really feel like a Vegas thing to me. And then I thought about doing like a party in Vegas because I'm doing a booth this year, but it just, it's just not calling my name. It's funny. Even last year when I was there with a booth, which was great. I've had a booth for, I don't know, like three, four, five years now at the IECSC Las Vegas show. And it's been so great, it's been so fun. So many opportunities to meet people in person and network and get my products into your guys hands and just have like really nice connections. Even last year I was like, I don't know if I'm coming back like this year. And I was right, I'm not coming back this year. So if you're going, I hope you guys have the best freaking time. But right now I'm just really in this place where I'm deeply, deeply trusting my intuition, even if it feels like a little scary and an unknown. But the more that I'm at least going in the flow with like my personal life, I've seen how like freeing and fun and opportunity is showing up. And I'm also doing the same thing with my business. And if you know me or if you've been following me for a long time, you've seen all like the ebbs and Flows. Or maybe if you're new here, you haven't seen all the ebbs and flows. It's really funny. I was actually talking to someone at the esthetician retreat, and she's like, she was asking me if I owned a spa, and sometimes I forget that there is people. There are people. Maybe you're those people that follow me or listen to the podcast or see me on social media, but you're not following that closely of, like, my story. Or maybe you haven't even been an esthetician that long. Like, this cycle, the cycles of years where, like, I've seen estheticians, like, come and go sometimes. It's wild. Like, some of these estheticians, like, they don't. They don't. You know, they've only. You've only been in the industry for six months, or you've only been in the industry for two years, so how could you possibly know my story? Not that I expect anyone to know my story, but it's interesting to observe. And, yeah, someone was asking me if I was gonna, like, share my whole story, and I'm like, I feel like I've shared my story so many times and really, like, it's not even about my story. I don't want to, like, continuing, like, sharing this story. I want to share what's going on, like, in the present moment. And I think that's where I've just, like, been in my life recently. It's like, people are like, how are you? Or, like, what's going on? And I'm like, I don't. I don't know what's going on. I can tell you, like, what's happening, like, right now, but in the past, I don't know. In the future, I don't know. I don't know if any of you guys relate to that, but I'm just like, I'm. I'm done talking about what's. What's happened in my past or what's happening in the future. I just want to be present. And I. With that, I feel like I was able to be really present in our esthetician retreat. I think you guys were able to be present in the retreat. And it's giving me. It's giving me, like, excitement and motivation to do it again. But again, my old self would have, like, already had the Next, you know, 10 things lined up, which I'm so grateful that I even have those opportunities. But everything in my heart, everything in my body is saying, enjoy your summer, Casey. Enjoy your summer. And that's what I'M gonna do. I have a bunch of travel, personal travel planned, and then I'll come back and we'll do. I don't actually know where I'm gonna land at the end of the summer because it's gonna be a wild summer. I'm. I'm checking off so crazy. As long as everything works out. I'm checking off five new countries this summer. Like, I don't even know. I think I've, like, been to five countries and now I'm going to five more countries. It's so wild. So I'm really going to be, like, deep in my own enjoyment and fun and creativity. Of course, I'll still be sharing things here on the podcast and on my social media, but I don't. I'm not, like, planning any future events. I, like, want to do another retreat, like, in the fall, and I think maybe that's something that, like, we're doing regularly, like, where I'm doing retreats maybe twice a year, maybe four times a year. But again, like, I don't know, I might change my mind again. But if it does happen, it'll most likely happen la, because that just feels like it's resonating the most with me. But again, stay tuned. I can change my mind at a drop of a hat, and I'm just allowing myself to do that. I'm like, let's see what else is going on. The. The bowl is out. She is alive and well. She's doing well. I hope you guys are enjoying using her in the treatment room. I don't have any other, like, new, new products coming, but I do have, like, a new variation of a product coming soon, so that's exciting. And again, like, I'm just, like, in this place where I'm not putting pressure on myself to do anything and just kind of, like, see how I'm feeling. So today I'm sitting here with my cacao and I've got my copper water bott, some water in it. And I just wanted to come here, come on here and say, hey, how are you guys doing? I miss you. I love you. I can't believe I've been doing this podcast for so long. I can't believe I've been podcasting for so long. That was the other thing. I'm like, I've been podcasting for like six or seven years, maybe longer, and that's gone through about a hundred different variations. And some of those variations you can find online. And some of them, I think, have, like, disappeared into the ether. And that's Just what was supposed to happen? Um, and the old version of me would, like, my ego would have been hurt by that. And now it's. It's just not like I've just, like, stripped away the ego and this, like, chase to get to the next thing. To the next thing. What's next? What's next? Raising that. Everyone's questions, like, what's next? It's like, well, why can't. Why can't I just be happy right here, right now? You know? And that I struggle with it, because, of course, then my mind starts wondering, like, well, what's next in my career? What's next in my personal life? What's next? Like, am I gonna buy another house? What's next? Am I gonna move? You know, what's next? I need more clients. What's next? What's the next product? It's like, what if we just. Like, what if we were just present and we were just grateful for all of the things that we have today, especially in the world that we live in that is so crazy and chaotic. Can you turn inward and can you focus on yourself? And can you focus on just, again, being present? Presence is just. It's overrated. No, it's. Yeah, it can be overrated, and it can be underrated. People don't talk about it, and they're not practicing being present, but it's. It's. It's something. Just something really special instead of like, I can't wait for the weekend. I can't wait for my vacation. I can't wait for whatever. What if it's just like, I'm just happy now? Of course you can still strive for other things, and you should strive for other things. But can you be happy with the business that you have now, the career that you have now, the moments where you're in school because you won't be in esthetician school again? I don't know. Hopefully this is resonating with you guys, because I think there's something about the. The anticipation, which can be fun and exciting, but we also get addicted to that anticipation of what's next. And again, I feel like I've. Like, I did the what's next for so many years in my esthetician business, with my spa in my career, that it got to the point where it was just like, okay, like, you can just keep doing that and never feel fulfilled, or you could just soak up every moment of every day of all the gratitude that you have for the opportunities that are being shown to you, and you'd be Surprised. Just, like, the mindset shift that you can have, and then it makes, like, smaller, maybe mundane things just feel more enjoyable. And then we're not relying on. We're not relying on outside resources to make us happy because we really. We really can't. Right? We could say, like, well, if I had more money, if I had more clients, if I just had that really expensive machine, if I. If I, if I, if I. And like, let me tell you, like, I did that for so long, and it was amazing that I was able to receive a lot of those things, but it didn't actually make me happier at the end of the day. That's why I got rid of my spa. That's why I got rid of my employees. That's why I got rid of my clientele. You know what I mean? I stopped chasing and I just started being present. But with that said, I'm. I don't want to say I'm, like, less motivated. I'm just. I'm not in that girl boss hustle anymore. And it feels good. It feels good. But with that, again with that being said, like, you're not going to get as regular podcasts from me because I'm. If you. If I'm doing regular, like. Like, I was, like, every Monday for years and years and years, but it turned into something that was, like, forced or, like, I was just doing it for, like, marketing or I was just doing it for my ego, rather then coming on here and sharing just, like, genuine information from my heart or just. Just sharing with you guys. And even coming on here now, I'm like, well, okay, what am I sharing? Like, what's happening? Like, today? And today I'm just sitting here at my desk. I, like, actually got some emails out. I'm working on a few blogs because I've just been in this, like, place where I'm like, I don't know. I don't want to know what's next. And I feel like I've done everything in this industry sometimes. And not that I'm like, I don't want to come here on hearing, like, complain like, oh, poor me, I've done everything. But it gets to this point where it's like, well, how many times can you talk about making your bed? How many times can I talk about whatever it is we're talking about? And, yeah, but I'm here. We're making things work. I actually did just write an article for Dermascope magazine that's in this month's Dermascope in the June. Dermascope and it's talking all about community. And I guess that's kind of like my focus right now is the community, especially in a space which is the beauty industry. That can feel so, like, dark and competitive and just like, in genuine. And I don't consume any of this stuff anymore, but I. I know it's out there because I feel it and I feel it through you guys. And I just want you to know that, like, you can put the phone down and you don't have to look at these people. You don't have to follow them. You don't have to follow guidelines. You don't have to buy their okay. Like, you just. You just don't. But if you are watching it, if you are getting sucked into it, it's a good thing to ask yourself, like, why do I keep going to this? Am I addicted to feeling bad? Am I addicted to drama? And what could I refocus my energy on rather than consuming other people's content that's making you feel bad. And yeah, maybe, maybe the, the feel good content isn't making you, isn't giving you, like, that dopamine hit that you want, and that's why you're going to the drama. But there are ways to detox yourself from dopamine and find other things to replenish dopamine, like, good things, like putting your feet in the grass and going outside and like, drinking some cacao instead of coff. And I know you think, Casey, this is silly. Like, it doesn't really make that much of a difference, but, like, just try it. I dare you to try it for longer than you want to try it. Try it and be consistent, because there is a huge difference from receiving your dopamine naturally in a healthy way from nature, rather than receiving dopamine from something toxic on the Internet, that you might get a bigger dopamine hit, but it also drains your dopamine rather than, like, if you go outside, you're getting the dopamine hit and you're getting a reserve for later. I could, like, go into a little bit of the science of it, but I. I just don't feel like that's me. Just. You can trust the energy or not. But yeah, with that being said, I just again wanted to come on here and say hi and I love you guys and I literally couldn't do it without you, and there will be another esthetician retreat, maybe in October. But again, like, don't hold. Hold it to me 100%. That's what I would like to do. But I'VE got a big summer of adventure and travel and we'll see where I land. I may or may not take you along with me on some of it. I will be recording my other podcast, hopefully some of it in Europe. If you're interested in the other parts of my life, like dance music and raving and all that good stuff, I started a podcast. It's called Out Late so you can check that out if you're interested in my other pieces of my life. Because I am not just an esthetician. I like other things too. But I love you guys. I again, I just want to come on here and say hi and tell you that I haven't forgotten about you and I'm gonna do my best to at least show up here, you know, one or two times a month. I'm sorry I made you wait so long, but make sure you're following me on Instagram because I'm still pretty regular on there as well as tick tock at Casey Bo Skincare. Skin and the City Podcast by Kasey Boone Skincare™ Episode: Dopamine for Estheticians + Staying Present Release Date: June 9, 2025 Host: Kasey Boone
In the June 9, 2025 episode of the Skin and the City Podcast, host Kasey Boone delves into the intricate relationship between dopamine and the lives of estheticians, emphasizing the importance of staying present. This episode serves as both a personal reflection and a guide for estheticians navigating the challenges of the beauty industry.
Kasey begins by sharing her excitement and challenges surrounding her recent esthetician retreat in downtown Los Angeles. Despite losing her voice temporarily, her enthusiasm remains undiminished.
"I've partially lost my voice...even though my voice isn't fully here, my body is and my mind is and I'm excited just to catch you up on everything that has been going on." ([02:30])
The retreat was a success, with sold-out classes and a strong turnout that reinforced the sense of community and self-care among participants.
"The turnout was amazing...it was just such a fun day of community and self-care and it really inspired me to keep going." ([05:45])
Kasey also touches upon her long-standing relationship with the IECSC Las Vegas show, expressing her decision not to return this year. She emphasizes the importance of trusting her intuition over following traditional paths.
"I'm deeply, deeply trusting my intuition, even if it feels like a little scary and unknown." ([10:15])
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the concept of being present. Kasey reflects on her journey of moving away from constantly planning and striving for "what's next" to enjoying the current moment.
"I just want to be present. And with that, I feel like I was able to be really present in our esthetician retreat." ([18:20])
She discusses the common struggle among professionals who are always anticipating future goals, leading to a perpetual state of chasing rather than experiencing fulfillment.
"The anticipation...we get addicted to that anticipation of what's next." ([22:50])
Kasey advocates for a mindset shift towards gratitude and enjoying the present, highlighting how this change can lead to greater satisfaction in both personal and professional lives.
"Can you be happy with the business that you have now, the career that you have now...just soaking up every moment of every day of all the gratitude that you have." ([25:00])
Addressing the competitive and often toxic nature of the beauty industry, Kasey emphasizes the importance of fostering a supportive community. She shares her recent contributions to Dermascope Magazine, where she discusses building genuine connections within the industry.
"I'm talking all about community...in a space which is the beauty industry that can feel so dark and competitive and just so in genuine." ([30:10])
Kasey encourages estheticians to disconnect from negative influences and focus on positive interactions, both online and offline.
"You can put the phone down and you don't have to look at these people...focus on just being present." ([33:40])
A core theme of the episode is dopamine management. Kasey distinguishes between natural, healthy sources of dopamine and those derived from toxic avenues, such as excessive internet use.
"There are ways to detox yourself from dopamine and find other things to replenish dopamine, like putting your feet in the grass and going outside and like drinking some cacao instead of coffee." ([38:25])
She argues that while activities like consuming social media or engaging in online drama might provide immediate dopamine hits, they ultimately drain dopamine reserves. In contrast, natural activities offer sustainable and fulfilling dopamine boosts.
"Receiving your dopamine naturally in a healthy way from nature...you're getting a dopamine hit and you're getting a reserve for later." ([41:50])
Kasey shares practical tips for estheticians to balance their dopamine levels, such as spending time outdoors, practicing mindfulness, and engaging in creative pursuits.
Looking ahead, Kasey outlines her plans for the summer, which include extensive travel and potential future retreats. She expresses a desire to remain flexible, allowing her intuition to guide her decisions rather than adhering to rigid schedules.
"Everything in my heart, everything in my body is saying, enjoy your summer, Casey. Enjoy your summer. And that's what I'M gonna do." ([45:00])
Kasey also mentions her new podcast, "Out Late," which explores other facets of her life, including dance music and raving, offering a more comprehensive view of her interests beyond esthetics.
"If you're interested in my other parts of my life, like dance music and raving and all that good stuff, I started a podcast. It's called Out Late." ([48:35])
Throughout the episode, Kasey maintains a strong connection with her audience, encouraging them to engage through various platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and her newsletter. She also highlights her Spotify playlists tailored for treatment rooms, emphasizing the importance of creating a positive environment for both estheticians and clients.
"Make sure you sign up for my newsletter because I have been pushing out more information on the newsletter. It's all good vibes, high vibes, all that good stuff." ([52:10])
Kasey concludes by expressing heartfelt gratitude to her listeners, reinforcing the sense of community that is central to her podcast and brand.
"I love you guys. I again want to come on here and say hi and tell you that I haven't forgotten about you and I'm gonna do my best to at least show up here, you know, one or two times a month." ([55:05])
In this insightful episode, Kasey Boone effectively intertwines personal anecdotes with professional advice, offering estheticians valuable perspectives on managing dopamine and embracing the present moment. Her emphasis on community, self-care, and genuine connections provides a refreshing take on navigating the beauty industry's demands. By prioritizing mindfulness and healthy dopamine sources, Kasey encourages her listeners to cultivate a fulfilling and balanced professional life.
