I'm not great about celebrating my birthday. I'm not one of those people who gets super excited about it and for a couple of good reasons. First, my birthday is the day after Christmas. So much of the world is pretty preoccupied with the holidays when it's supposed to be my day. Second, my younger sister was born on my sixth birthday, which, although she doesn't believe me, was actually an extremely cool thing at the time. I mean, what six year old girl doesn't want a live baby doll for a birthday present? It was awesome. But she did steal a teeny bit of my individual birthday thunder. So I've sort of downplayed my birthday most of my life and that's okay. But birthdays are important because they not only mark aging, they mark growth. And we continue to grow. It's so funny we say that people are grown ups. Like Mark is all grown up or I have grown children as if they've been fully baked and are finished with their evolution. And of course, when I was younger, I looked at people my age now and thought they're done, they're finished. Like, not like they're dead, but they had finished changing. Their lives were simply on rinse and repeat at a certain point, right? But as the birthdays tick by, I realize we don't stop growing, we don't stop changing. We continue to expand, to learn, and even to create. Creation never ends, nor should it. It's pretty trippy. But we continue to want things, to influence our worlds and to reach new horizons. And it's sort of like Yin and Yang101. Our bodies are material, more yang, and they eventually contract. But our minds and our inner beings, our spirits, are more vibrational, more yin, and they continue to expand. And in fact, those two things tend to happen in lockstep. As the body contracts, the spirit expands. That's why our grandparents and the village elders and experienced leaders of a certain age can be the wisest, clearest and most powerful people in the room. Birthdays, for Jessica, go beyond just marking another year—they serve as milestones of personal growth and change.
Jessica challenges the common idea that people eventually become “fully baked”—that adulthood is a static destination:
She shares her younger perspective:
As she ages, she notices that growth and desire for new experiences never actually stops:
