Unconditional love. We all like to throw around the term unconditional love. It's like a perfect love, a love that sees past every foible, all resistance and issues forth from one's heart, even toward an enemy, a betrayer, or that person chewing really loud. It's a love that's not based on performance or appearance or worthiness, but rather on the simple truth that the person is deserving of love simply because they exist. And ideally, unconditional love extends beyond personal relationships. It can be a love for humanity, for nature, for life itself. Unconditional love can inspire acts of compassion, generosity and kindness without the expectation of recognition or reward. Unconditional love is egoless, which is pretty cool. I mean, we should all probably be aiming for that ultimately, even as we watch our dumb reality TV shows. I'm sorry, I just had to say that because it's so, like, lofty and we can't achieve it all the time because the word love is a really charged thing, you know, it assumes kind of a magical feeling in us, connected with some magical place in someone else. There's a lot of pressure, I think, and I've always believed that love of any kind begins with acceptance. And acceptance is much easier to practice than love. Love feels pink and warm and expanding and implies affection, whereas acceptance is simply putting away my resistance, letting go of my opinions and feelings and arguments, letting my emotional force field dissolve and just letting things be as they are. And that's hard enough sometimes, but when I lay all my stuff down, there is room for a better energy to flow, room for possibility. And on my best days, love fills that space because this is just my opinion. But love is natural, I think. It's a force in nature. It's there in the ether, in our cells, ready to heal and uplift and fill gaps and support. We don't have to really cultivate it. We don't have to work for it. It's just there, waiting for us to get out of its way. And by practicing unconditional acceptance, we step out of love's way. If all of this sounds a little too, you know, woo woo or goody two shoes, remember, this is a practice we all carry around negative or resistant thoughts and feelings and reactions all the time. And this is just an invitation to see what's underneath them, to see who you are without those reactions. Let's see, let's let go of some of those thoughts and opinions tonight, just for fun. You can always pick them up again later if you need them. And you can always put them down again and dare to let love move in. So tonight we begin by accepting ourselves and creating room for love to flow.
