Hi, I'm Jessica Porter and welcome back to Sleep Magic, a podcast where I help you find the magic of your own mind, helping you to sleep better and live better. Thank you everyone for being here. Let's all take a nice deep breath. You know, I often begin the show with shout outs, so we heard from a mom recently who said my daughter Tully has been a longtime listener and subscriber. She's told me for years I need to ask for a shout out, but

I'm useless and haven't ever done it.
Jessica Porter
Well, you finally did it. Good for you. I'm so glad. Hi there Tali. Thank you so much for listening. From the uk, we heard from Sarah Jane and her son Austin, who listen every night and recently became subscribers. Thank you. Austin, who's 11, is really, really into trains. So into trains that he often calls himself austrain as a wordsmith myself, Austin, I love that. Thank you for reaching out. You can connect with us through the Sleepiest app or through my website or over social media. We always love to hear from you.

So thanks everybody. Tonight, get sleepy in Santa Monica.

When I first moved to Los Angeles 18 years ago, I landed in Santa Monica. Now, for those of you who don't know, LA is a really weird place when it comes to what exactly it is like. There's Los Angeles county, the very large area in which Los Angeles, the city, exists. But within what we call LA are all these smaller cities with their own city halls and city councils. Like, for instance, Beverly Hills, smack in the middle of LA is its own city. So is West Hollywood and Burbank and Santa Monica. Santa Monica covers much of the beachfront of Los Angeles, and as its own city, it has its own personality and style, its own pride. So that's where I landed when I first came to California. I consider it my original home here. Santa Monica weather is beautiful every single

day of the year.
Jessica Porter
It's in the 60s in the winter, but never too hot in the summer. The ocean cools it off, so it's never stifling. The worst kind of weather in Santa Monica is fog rolling in from the ocean in May and June, but even
Co-host or Narrator
that burns off by noon. And there's so much space, sand, a single iconic beach that is not only long, but wide.
Jessica Porter
There's so much of it, you can

really feel the abundance of it. So we're going to go to Santa Monica tonight. I really hope you enjoy it.

Before we begin, our only ad break which makes this magic possible to listen ad free, follow the link in the show notes. Lately, I'VE been noticing how much the seasons change the way I sleep. The second the nights get warmer, I suddenly become very aware of anything that feels too heavy or too warm. So now that we're heading into summer, I finally decided to refresh my bedding and I'm so glad I did. I ordered the bamboo sheet set from Quince and they've honestly been perfect for the summer weather. They're cool when I first get into bed, really breathable through the night while still feeling soft and cozy at the same time. Quince has everything you need to upgrade your bed for summer lightweight sheets, airy linen bedding, and duvet covers in beautiful neutral colors and timeless patterns. Everything feels elevated but without the luxury markup you get with other brands because Quints works directly with ethical manufacturers so their bedding is priced 50 to 80% less than similar brands, which honestly makes a real difference right now. The longer days, busier schedules, constantly being around people and even though they're all part of a full life, I notice that by the end of the day my mind can feel like it's struggling to fully settle. That's actually why I started trying the Tanasi gummies. I've really liked how easy they are to add into my wind down routine, especially during busy weeks when my brain still feels switched on long after I'm ready to rest. Because they're thc free, I still feel calm and clear headed. What makes Tanasi different is their patented CBD and CBDA formula developed through university research and it's been shown to be two times better than CBD alone in supporting your body's response to inflammation. They also offer soft gels, tinctures and topical products so you can really find what works best for your routine. Go to tanasi.com and use promo code sleepmagic to get 25% off at checkout. Now get yourself into a safe and comfortable position. And let's begin.
Co-host or Narrator
Allow your eyes to close easily and gently. And just invite your awareness back to your breath. Just gently, just inviting. Really quietly. Hey, mind, why don't you come back here just for a moment? Because you see, the mind loves to move around. That's its thing and that's good.
Jessica Porter
But we also have
Co-host or Narrator
some control over the mind. And it's important that we develop our ability to guide our own mind just one second at a time. No one controls their mind all the time, far from it. But we can begin to just invite the mind to go where we want it to go. So as you invite your mind to the breath, just notice your awareness coming back home to your body. And as it comes home, your body is relaxing already. Letting go, drifting, releasing, allowing. Good. As you bring your awareness now up into your eyelids,
Jessica Porter
just imagine that your
Co-host or Narrator
eyelids are feeling heavy. And as you imagine that your eyelids are feeling heavy, let them get heavy. And now that they're feeling nice and heavy, I'd like you to accept the suggestion that your eyelids are so heavy they will not open. Because in a moment, I'm going to ask you to test your eyelids to make sure they won't open. And that's about you pretending they cannot open, letting them be so heavy that you can't open them. So now, accepting the suggestion that your eyelids are so relaxed they will not open, test them. Wiggle your eyebrows. And as you wiggle your eyebrows, your eyes remain closed. Good. Now. Now this lovely heaviness you're feeling around your eyes, let's imagine it moving back now into your head. Imagine that lovely, warm, heavy feeling spilling back into your brain like a wave of warm energy moving back into your brain, taking over every single cell of your brain. And your brain is surrendering to this heaviness, to this warmth. You notice that your head is feeling heavier now on the pillow, and that the muscles of your scalp are releasing, softening, relaxing. And the warm heaviness it began in your eyelids is moving up now into your forehead, softening your forehead as it expands and releases any tension it's been holding during the day. Good. As the warm, heavy feeling moves down now, down along your nose, down over your cheekbones, down now settling into your jaw, a lovely warm heaviness moving all the way down your jaw, into your chin. The same warm heaviness around your lips. Any tension you may have felt in or around your mouth has disappeared. Because you can let go now. It's time to relax. As you go deeper and deeper,
Jessica Porter
that
Co-host or Narrator
warm, heavy energy is moving down your neck. And your neck is feeling soft and relaxed. And the warm heaviness is moving down into your shoulders and your shoulders, which may have carried all, all sorts of tension today, all sorts of responsibilities, even quietly, without telling you, they're letting go now. And that warm, heavy energy is seeping into your shoulders, softening the muscles of your shoulders. And now moving down into your arms, through your biceps, your elbows, your forearm, through your wrists, into your hands, into every single finger as your arms are becoming very, very heavy. Heavy like they're made of magic marble. And that feels so nice to simply let them go. Because as your arms are getting heavier and heavier, any tension you may have been carrying today is moving down through your arms, out your hand and into the floor. Good. As you go deeper and deeper. Now, I'd like you to bring your awareness to any sounds that may be going on around you in your environment. Just notice what do you hear? Allow the sounds to simply be and to move through your body as the sounds now take you deeper and even deeper into relaxation. And the sound of my voice is also taking you deeper and deeper, causing your body to become loose and limp and relaxed. And there will be a point, and it may have already taken place, where my voice becomes distant or detached. And you let go on your own journey. As you drift and float and dream. And you notice that that lovely heaviness that began up around your eyes is moving down now, a softer version of it moving down into your chest, softening you from the inside. As your rib cage expands and relaxes. And that lovely, warm feeling is moving down deeper now, deeper down inside your belly, softening you from the inside out. As your breath drops deeper and the muscles of your belly relax, you notice that your pelvis is feeling nice and heavy on the bed, your buttocks and lower back relaxing. The day is done. And the lovely, warm, heavy feeling is moving now all the way down into your legs, through your thighs and your knees, your calves and your ankles, down into your feet, down into your toes. As you go deeper and deeper, And as your body is relaxing, your mind is relaxing. And as your mind is relaxing,

body is going deeper. And even deeper. Imagine you are walking slowly down a quiet street in Santa Monica, California. You are on the edge of the continent, hugged by the Pacific Ocean. It's an evening in late spring. The air is warm. As the day begins to release itself into night. You detect the faint scent of jasmine mixed with the smell of sunlit pavement and the unmistakable breath of the ocean. The day is ending very gently, as though the world, world itself, is unwinding. As you walk, you notice the quality of the light. The California coast has a particular golden softness at this hour. The sky is a beautiful pale blue, wide and open. And when you get a glimpse of the horizon, you see the sky is melting into warmer tones, oranges and reds, And everything is slowing down. You notice people moving leisurely around you. A car passes slowly, then another. You notice the scent of the ocean becoming stronger now. You turn a corner, and ahead of you you see an open stretch of the beach. The sky seems even bigger now, and you see the setting sun sparkling on the water. You cross one final street to get to the beach. You hear the waves now, steady and rhythmic, rolling in and out, in and out, A sound that feels ancient. You reach the boardwalk. There's a whole world of activity here. People jogging, cycling, rollerblading, dogs pulling their

owners

and owners tugging on the leashes of their curious dogs. In the distance, you see volleyball nets. You hear the thwack of the ball as a group of friends play for fun. You look carefully to the right and the left. You find a gap in the activity on the boardwalk, and you cross. You take off your shoes, and as you step onto the sand, you feel the texture shift beneath your feet. The top layer still holds warmth from the sun, while just beneath it, the sand is cool, soft and yielding. You move slowly across the sand, each step sinking slightly, then lifting again. The beach is so wide that it takes quite a while to get to the water. And as you walk, you hear the squawk of seagulls. You feel the muffled breeze in your ears. Your hair whips around, And with each step, your feet are sinking slightly, then lifting again. And with every step, you are going deeper and deeper into relaxation. Closer to the shore, you see a lifeguard tower. It is an iconic Wooden shack painted light blue with a long ramp down to the sand. A young lifeguard stands on the deck, looking out over the water. You feel like you recognize the lifeguard and you realize this beach you've seen a million times in movies and television shows. Around you, people are lingering, enjoying the last rays of the sun. You see a young couple walking along the shoreline, their voices low and indistinct. There's a family sitting further back on the dry sand. The kids are closer to the water, making sandcastles while the parents pack up their belongings. Their laughter is carried softly on the air. As you go deeper and deeper. You look out over the the ocean and in the distance you see a

sitting on their boards, waiting, watching the horizon for the next gentle swell. Everyone is relaxed. The beach has softened. Everyone. Just as it is softening you, You walk closer to the water. A wave rolls in, smooth, steady, catching the last of the light

and then

folding softly onto the shore. You feel a faint mist touching your skin. And then the next wave slides up the beach and then draws back again. You step closer and the next wave is curling around your ankles. You feel the corner cool water at your feet as your heels sink deeper into the wet sand. And as the wave retreats, you see hundreds of little bubbles in the sand. You stand here simply watching. Your mind is so relaxed, Calm, Peaceful. There's nothing to do, nothing to think. Just the movement of the water, The rhythm of the ocean. And the sand beneath your feet. The sun is hovering just above the horizon. And there are no clouds tonight, just a gradient sky moving seamlessly from blue to a warm strip of orange at the horizon. As the sun drops down. Over the edge, You too are dropping deeper and deeper into relaxation. And now the sun is gone. Until tomorrow. You feel full, Whole, Peaceful. You head north along the beach and in the distance you see an array of lights. It is the Santa Monica Pier, illuminated for the evening. Built in 1909, the pier attracts locals and tourists all year long. You see a roller coaster all lit

up

and small concession stands selling funnel cakes and cotton candy. But the centerpiece within it all
Jessica Porter
is

a huge spinning wheel of light. An 85 foot tall Ferris wheel spinning on the pier. It is the only solar powered Ferris wheel in the world and it gives a dazzling show, flashing thousands of lights on its 40 spokes. And as you watch it turn, its color shifting like those in a kaleidoscope. You are going deeper and deeper. As the night settles in, the sparkling pier becomes brighter and you see the lights reflected on the darkening water. And as you get closer, the sounds from the pier drift toward you. Carnival music, laughter, A shriek from the roller coaster. And under it all, the rhythmic sound of the wave. In and out, In and out. In and out. The sky is getting darker now. You turn away from the pier, walking slowly along the sand. Your body feels softer now. Your movements feel easier, more fluid. And the sounds of the pier are becoming distant. Ahead of you, just at the edge of the beach, you see a small, quiet hotel. It has a white facade and wide windows. And there's a soft light glowing from within. You walk along the beach to the hotel's patio. You find your shoes are waiting for you here. You brush the sand from your feet and put them on. You step into the clean, white lobby. You're greeted by a friendly concierge and given your room key. You walk down a quiet white hallway to room number one. You unlock the door and step inside. You close the door gently behind you. And the outside world. World begins to fade, Is warm here, And you are going deeper and deeper. You smell clean linens on the bed. You go to the window and open the curtains. You can see a few feet of the sand beyond the hotel patio. But after that, it's dark. All you can see is the moon rising over the water. And the sparkle of the pier. You open the window slightly, and the sound of the ocean slides in. You hear the familiar crash of the water, and you feel the rhythm of the waves and you smell the salty air. You lie down on the bed, and the mattress receives you completely. You pull the blanket over you, turn out the light. And close your eyes. Outside, inside, the waves continue. In and out, In. And out, As your whole being aligns with the waves. In. And out, In. And out. Nothing to do, Nothing to think. As you go deeper. And deeper. And your body grows heavier. And your breath deepens. And your muscles. Let go. In. And out. And out. As you drift. And flow. And dream. It. It.
