Thank you for being here tonight. How to regulate your nervous system for better sleep. You know, I've been hearing a lot of talk lately about dysregulation of the nervous system, and nothing will make you feel older than a whole new word coming up for something that you feel like you might have had an old word for. Like, when I was young, I think we had a different saying for dysregulation of the nervous system. And it was, I'm freaked out, man, or I'm wigging, or I can't deal. Anyway, those were our words. So here's my take on dysregulation. I think life is dysregulating, and I don't think there's any getting around it. And that's okay. Strong feelings, big challenges, even falling in love will dysregulate the heck out of you, speeding your heart rate, increasing cortisol, and actually reducing serotonin, which causes the obsessive thinking you have when you fall in love. So, yeah, even the good stuff drives us off balance. Maybe the only way to avoid dysregulation is to move to a monastery. But I'm sure even then some monk would tick you off. So when I was growing up, when I felt emotional upheaval, I called a friend or talked things through with my mom, or ate ice cream or just watched a lot of tv. Now, they weren't all great coping mechanisms, but over time, my nervous system would settle down. And eventually it might get so settled that I became bored. Hard to imagine these days. Boredom. It's like an extinct species because we don't exist in such simple sequestered environments anymore. These days, there's constant stimulation from every direction. And the young people who've grown up in this 24.7Intensity are experiencing a whole new type of stress where being freaked out is the norm, not the exception. And even for those of us who had simpler pasts, we now live in a hyper stimulating force field. And we too have to find our balance within it. So how do we do that? Well, there are a couple of ways. First of all, there's this thing I'm just learning about called CO regulation, which we are practicing right now. And I guess back in the day, CO regulation might be called hanging out. But the point is, CO regulation occurs when we entrain with someone else's nervous system who in that moment is feeling more peaceful than we are. Like talking to a calm friend or a therapist, or listening to me. In fact, sleep magic works in part because I'm a total relaxation nerd. And by listening to me, you are choosing to relax and connect with that vibe. And we do versions of this all the time. It's one of the really cool experiences of being alive. Because we're not ideas, we're electromagnetic events. So as we meet up with other vibes around us, they can help us ramp up or dial down. So by being here right now, your nervous system is finding balance. It is regulating itself. But I've also written this episode to show you a specific way to calm yourself when you feel overwhelmed, no matter where you are or what's happening around you.

So get yourself into a safe and comfortable position and let's begin.
Guided Meditation Voice
Allow your eyes to close easily and gently. Good.
Jessica Porter
And now bring your awareness to your breath. Just reel your awareness in from the day,
Guided Meditation Voice
bringing it home
Jessica Porter
to the very
Guided Meditation Voice
gentle wave of the breath. And the breath can seem pretty dull compared to the thoughts of the day and the action of your life. But by bringing your focus to the breath,
Jessica Porter
You're slowing down,
Guided Meditation Voice
Simplifying. Focusing. Here. Back with your body. Back with your own inner being. Good. Now bring your awareness, please, up into your eyelids.
Jessica Porter
I'd like you to imagine that your
Guided Meditation Voice
eyelids are feeling heavy. Just pretend. Because the imagination is an amazing thing.
Jessica Porter
Thing.
Guided Meditation Voice
And where we put our imagination, our body follows.
Jessica Porter
So as you imagine that your eyelids
Guided Meditation Voice
are relaxed and heavy, they are beginning to feel relaxed and heavy.
Jessica Porter
And now we're going to go a little further with other each imagination and
Guided Meditation Voice
imagine that your eyelids are so relaxed and heavy that they can't open, that they're stuck shut. Now, I want to make it very clear. Your eyes can open, but we're imagining just for a moment, that they can't.
Jessica Porter
And in a moment, I'm going to
Guided Meditation Voice
ask you to test your eyelids to make sure they can't open. And I'm asking you to fake it and just let your imagination win over reality.
Jessica Porter
So accepting the suggestion that your eyelids
Guided Meditation Voice
are so relaxed they will not open, I want you to test your eyes now by wiggling your eyebrows. While your eyes remain closed, just give them a little tug. Good. Great. Now allow that lovely relaxation in your eyelids to move back into your head. Like a warm mist, a relaxation is moving back into your skull, circulating within your skull, Penetrating every single cell of your brain. So your brain is completely taken over by this mist of relaxation. And it feels so nice. To allow your face to relax. The muscles of your face are becoming soft and heavy. You've been communicating with your face all day, more than you even knew. And now your face is off duty. The day is done. Good. And now that lovely mist of relaxation is moving down from within your skull, down through your neck, down into your shoulders. And as that mist works on your shoulders and softens them like a masseuse, your shoulders are becoming loose and limp and relaxed. And as your shoulders are letting go. All of the responsibilities you carry on, those shoulders are dropping to the floor. And you can pick whatever you need back up in the morning. But for right now, your only responsibility is to yourself. As you go deeper and deeper
Jessica Porter
and
Guided Meditation Voice
the mist of relaxation is moving down down into your arms. Your arms are becoming nice and heavy, heavy, as the mist moves all the way down into the palms of your hands. And the palms of your hands feel warm and open and may even tingle a little. As the relaxation moves all the way into your fingers, every finger feeling full and heavy, heavy. Good. Now that mist of relaxation that was circulating up inside your head is moving down now into your torso, softening you from the inside out, moving down around your heart, Surrounding and supporting your lungs, And moving deep, deep, deep now into your belly, opening, softening and relaxing. Inside your belly. The muscles in your abdomen are softening, letting go. They're off duty. The day is done as the muscles of your upper back and lower back are melting into the bed and your pelvis is feeling nice and heavy. And the mist of relaxation is moving further down now into your legs,
Jessica Porter
moving
Guided Meditation Voice
all the way down into your feet, so that the soles of your feet are feeling warm and open and may even tingle a little. As the relaxation moves all the way down into your toes. And every single toe is feeling full, heavy and relaxed. Good. Imagine you are standing on the platform at a train station. It stretches out in both directions, long and open, exposed to the air and the sky. Footsteps pass behind you. A suitcase wheels by, rattling softly. Voices are rising and falling. You hear fragments of conversations, laughter, impatience. Somewhere down the line, metal hums. A train is idling. And further away, another one arrives, its sound rolling through the station in waves. There is movement all around you, vibrations moving through you, And the light is shifting constantly. You see reflections off of steel glass rails. Signs flicker, digital numbers change. An announcement comes over the PA system. You notice that this environment is making you feel slightly discombobulated, off balance. You notice a bench beneath a small shelter on the platform. You walk toward it and sit down. You lower yourself onto the bench and feel its firmness beneath you. You feel your feet on the ground. You sense the contact through the soles of your shoes. As the station continues to bustle around you. People are still moving. Announcements are echoing through the speakers. Wind is whistling down the tracks, lifting a scrap of paper and moving it along. You feel a rumble through the soles of your feet. The sound of a train begins
Jessica Porter
as
Guided Meditation Voice
it rattles through the station. And now the sound is surrounding you as the train passes through the station without stopping, and the sound fades down the. You close your eyes. You place the palm of one hand against the other. As you hold the your own hands. You feel skin touching skin, Warmth meeting warmth,
Jessica Porter
And your mind instantly moves to
Guided Meditation Voice
the point of contact
Jessica Porter
between your palms.
Guided Meditation Voice
And settles here. You notice the pressure where your hands are touching. You feel the subtle pulse beneath the surface of the skin. And you breathe. As you continue to hold your own
Jessica Porter
hands,
Guided Meditation Voice
your attention is focusing naturally on this point of connection. Because you are holding yourself. Not metaphorically, Literally. And your nervous system is recognizing this contact. It is familiar. It is safe. The hemispheres of your brain are balancing. And communicating with one another. And as the sounds of the station continue around you,
Jessica Porter
You are going deeper
Guided Meditation Voice
and deeper. And it feels nice and easy to focus on the connection between your hands. As you breathe, You notice a gentle current forming between your hands. It's a subtle warmth, a tingling. This energy is not coming from outside of you. It is arising from within you. I am home. I am am home. I am home. This energy is circulating through your hands, up your arms and into your body. As you offer yourself your own peaceful life force. You are soothing yourself. What began as an unsteady energy is now a peaceful balm. Because your body knows how to balance itself. It's doing it right now. It has always known how to balance itself. And always will. As you are feeling steady, Centered, Strong within yourself, Your breath is finding its natural rhythm. And your whole inner world. Is feeling calm and spacious. You continue holding your own hands, Circulating your own life force. As you think, I am home. I'm home. I am home. You are designed to self regulate, Just as you are self regulating right now. This balance lives within you. And has always lived within you. And it feels really good. To experience it. And from now on, Every time you bring your hands together, This pathway inside of you will strengthen. And your return home to this feeling will be easier. No matter what is happening around you or inside of you, When you bring your palms together and hold yourself, You'll come home. And settle. And find balance. Because your body knows how to regulate, Just as it is regulating right now. I am home. I am home. I am home. Every time you practice self regulating by bringing your palms together, it's becoming easier. And every time you practice, You go deeper. And it feels even better. And as you bring your palms together, you think, I am home. I am home. I am home. You bring your focus to the train station again and look around. You hear sounds like footsteps and voices. You feel the vibrations of the trains. But everything feels distant now, far away. You are centered. You are the steady point
Jessica Porter
in the middle of flow.
Guided Meditation Voice
You allow your hands to separate gently and the balance remains inside of you. You are present, aligned. You are home. A train arrives along the platform, The doors open. And you get on board. And you continue your journey tonight. And no matter where you go, You are home. As you drift. And float. And dream.
