This year we have some lovely new stories planned. More adventures, more wonder, and maybe even a few surprises. We can't wait to share them with you. Now, onto our story. Bernice and her friends are having extra art to help decorate the school. She and Bobby are painting eggs and Bobby is being his normal silly self. When Bernice gets home, she is extra hungry and sits and talks to Papa Bear about why. While she has a snack, Bernice and Bobby paint Easter Egg what are you painting on your egg, Bobby? Bernice asked as she covered her egg in a light shade of pink paint. It looks brown. Well, bobby said, I think this exercise doesn't really suit my artistic talents. I think we should be painting canvases today. Maybe a scene of a robot chasing a rabbit in a field to be friends, of course, or even the teacher's favorite flowers. But painting eggs? That's just not as fun. Bernice looked up. We didn't have to paint eggs, silly. You chose eggs and asked me to join you. We could have done something else to help decorate the school. She paused her painting and leaned a little closer. You aren't painting what I think you're painting, are you? Bobby grinned. Yes, I am. I am painting poop emojis on the eggs. Then when people see them, they'll think it's like little cone shaped poops. Bernice laughed. I don't know if Mrs. McGinnis is going to like that very much. She said we had full artistic freedom, bobby replied. I'm pretty sure I heard her say that. And besides, robots are hard to paint on eggs. I guess I could do a couple dinosaur eggs for fun too. I think, she said. We were free to paint the eggs how we wanted, Bernice said. I'm not sure that's the same as painting poop emojis. Well, burn, Bobby says proudly. As the artist. I disagree. Okay, Bob, bernice said, smiling. I think I'll continue with my pink and purple bubbles, and then maybe I'll make a few look like penguins for fun. What would a dinosaur egg even look like anyway? The pictures I've seen just look like regular eggs. Maybe I could paint a raptor coming out of the egg, bobby said. Might be hard though. These brushes aren't great for detail. That sounds cool. Just then, Bernice's tummy started to grumble. Was that thunder or an earthquake? Bobby asked with a laugh. I think I'm going to need a snack after school today, Bernice said, laughing. Luckily, there might be some special cookies when I get home or something like that. I'm sure it will be yummy delicious. I have an emergency Papa Bear cookie in my bag if you need it, Bobby said. It's chocolate chip. Is that the cookie I gave you two months ago? Bernice asked. Bobby peeked into his bag. It's still good, just a little green. And our parents always say to eat green, right? Bernice laughed. I don't think they mean that kind of green. Okay students, the teacher called. Please finish up your projects and bring them to the front to dry. Tomorrow we'll decorate the hallway outside our classroom. I think these are the best poop emoji eggs I have ever painted. Bobby said proudly. I'm sure they will be a hit. I'm sure they will be memorable. Bernice replied as she finished her egg and began cleaning up her space. See you later alligator. Bernice said as she waved goodbye to Ethan. After a while, crocodile, I hope you get a snack so your tummy stops grumbling. Ethan called as he headed toward his grandmother's house. He often spent his after school time there reading books and eating treats before his parents came to pick him up. Bernice hurried up her walkway and stepped inside, closing the door quickly behind her. It was still cold outside and she didn't want all the delicious smells to escape. Papa Cookie, I'm home. And Papa, I am super starving and whatever you are making smells beyond yummy delicious. I'm in the kitchen, Little Bear, putting some icing on some cookies. Come in whenever you're ready. Papa Bear said in his super deep voice. I was ready two hours ago, Papa. Just then Bernice heard the soft padding of Paws as Cookie came around the corner to greet her and to collect some pets. Let me get this last sneaker off, Cookie, and then I'm ready. They're kind of stubborn today because one of the laces has a knot and I'm not very good at knots. I don't know if Papa is either. He says sometimes he's short on patience, but Mama always helps so I guess she can fix it later. After she finally got her sneaker off, Cookie came over purring. How was your day today, Cookie? Did you miss me? I missed you even though my day was super busy and stuff. I'm glad you're back to normal now and we can talk and you can help me with my homework and things. Though I don't actually have any homework tonight, which is kind of strange, so maybe you can help me with my reading Or I could read to you if you like. Cookie simply purred in response. I had gym class today and we did really hard stuff and I sweat a lot, so I should probably warn you just in case because I know it might scare you a bit. My tummy is super grumbly today. I guess I should have eaten more lunch, but I really wanted to share because the other kids were sharing and one new boy didn't seem to have anything, so I gave him part of mine. Bernice paused only long enough to take a breath. Oh, and guess what? We had a longer art class than usual today, which was nice, even though we never seem to have super long science classes, which doesn't seem fair. If we did, we could do really complex experiments, which I know Bobby would like, though maybe Ethan wouldn't. Anyway, we made Easter decorations, which was fun, even though I still think painting is better. Our art teacher likes these seasonal things and she's really nice. Cookie rolled onto her back, hoping for a belly rub. I think this might be a short talk today, bernice said, smiling. Because I can feel a grumble coming on and you always think it's thunder. Bernice gave Cookie a quick belly rub, stood up, put her sneakers away, and hung up her jacket. I'll see you later, Cookie. Okay. She then ran into the kitchen. Papa, I am really hungry and I think I am almost drooling, even though I know that might not be very polite. But the smells are so good. Don't you ever drool when things smell this good? You sound hungry, Little Bear, papa Bear said with a smile. Why don't you wash your hands and I'll put a plate of cookies on the table for us to share. Some have icing on top. They look pretty, Papa, bernice said, sitting down. Almost too pretty to eat. Except I think I will anyway. Bernice took a great big bite of an egg shaped cookie covered in colorful stripes. The icing was soft and sweet and the cookie was still a little warm. Super yummy, Papa, she said, accidentally blowing a few crumbs onto the table. I'm glad you like them, Little Bear, Papa Bear said. Why don't you tell me all about your day and why you seem so hungry today. Should I make you a sandwich instead of cookies? Bernice took a big drink of milk and nearly ran out of breath. No, Papa, these cookies are too good. I'll be okay. I think it was gym class that made me hungry, and maybe swimming, but that didn't make me hungry because you packed me an extra breakfast and Mama gave me a granola bar she had in her bag. She barely paused. I sweat a lot in gym class because the teacher made us work extra hard. And then at lunch, well, we were sharing again. Mary had some super delicious dumplings, and Bobby brought something interesting, a new kind of wrap with a special sauce inside. Ethan brought extra mango, which was super cool because I love mango, and we almost had a competition over who would get to share it with him. Bernice took another bite. But there was a new boy at our table and he didn't really have much to eat, so we all gave him things to try and he didn't have anything to give us. So I think I ate a little less than usual. But what I did eat was super interesting, especially the dumplings. They had cabbage and pork inside. They were almost as yummy as man, that sounds like a good lunch, Little Bear, papa Bear said. I'll try to pack a little extra for you next time, just in case one of your friends doesn't have anything to share. That way you won't be so hungry when you get home. Our cookies are a treat. Okay, Papa. So what else happened at school today? I heard from Bobby's mom that you had a longer art class. Yeah, we did, bernice said. Which is fun. I guess a longer science class would be better. Or maybe math, but some kids might not agree. I think everyone liked having more art. She leaned forward a little. Today we were painting decorations for outside the art classroom. Or maybe the whole school. I'm not sure. Mrs. McGinnis really likes to celebrate all the seasons and stuff, so we decorate for just about everything. I had no idea there were so many festivals until this year. It's a big world, Little Bear. Yeah, super ginormous. Bernice smiled. Anyway, Bobby and I chose to paint eggs. I made some polka dot once. I'm not really a fan of pink and purple, but it seemed appropriate. I made a few others, too, but Bobby wasn't as impressed, even though he's the one who convinced me to paint eggs. She grinned. So you know what he painted on his eggs, Papa? You'll never guess so I'll just tell you. He painted poop emojis, so now the eggs might look like little blobs of poop. Maybe Mrs. McGinnis won't allow it, but I think she will. She wants us to be creative. Papa Bear let out a soft sigh. Oh, that Bobby. Yeah, bernice said. He's pretty cool. I think. So. Anything else interesting happen today? Bernice paused because she had two cookies in her mouth. Not really, Papa she said after swallowing. I don't even have homework, which is kind of strange, but Cookie has agreed to read a book with me instead. She brightened. Ethan gave me a couple more books from his grandma's house, and they are super interesting. They're about a boy and a horse. Do you think you could buy me a horse? Papa Bear smiled. Um, I don't think we can have a horse in our backyard, but maybe we can ride a horse this summer. Ok, bernice said. I guess that's just about as good. She picked up another cookie. I really like the icing on the cookies, Papa. It's very artistic. Did you study art in school, too? Maybe you could be an artist someday. You might not be too old to start. Hupa Bear chuckled. I didn't study art in school. Maybe I'm just artistically inclined. Maybe. Papa, you certainly can make yummy, delicious treats. Thank you, Little Bear. Finish your cookies while I put the others away for Mama to take to her office tomorrow. Then I'll start preparing dinner. Save some for us, Papa. Papa Bear laughed. Don't worry, Little Bear. There will still be lots of cookies. Bernice smiled and reached for one more just in case. After reading a book with Cookie, or at least reading some of it to Cookie, who didn't seem very interested in horses and that sort of thing, Bernice began to feel a little sleepy. That sometimes happens when you read a long story after a long, busy day. Then she had a delicious dinner, even having seconds. And after playing a few games with Mama and Papa, she started her bedtime routine. Lately she had been taking showers, which were fun because if you closed your eyes, you could imagine standing under a waterfall in a jungle. And if she really used her imagination, she could almost hear dinosaurs and tigers, which she knew only existed at the same time in her imagination. Tonight Mama suggested a bath so her muscles could relax after a long day of sports. Bernice used Mama's flowery bubble bath, which she kind of liked, though she often thought Papa's soap smelled better. It smelled like the forest. After her relaxing bath, she brushed her teeth. Her eyes were already getting droopy. She did a few quick stretches. She knew she should stretch more, but all she could think about was lying down in bed. She checked that her clothes were ready for the morning. She was going to wear the socks Bobby gave her with the dinosaurs on them. Finally, she hopped into bed, arranged Twigga, Wolfie, and Madeline just right, pulled the blanket up to her chin, and called out, a little more softly than usual, it's that time, Papa and what time is that, Little Bear? Papa Bear asked as he gently walked up the stairs so he wouldn't shake the whole house. When he reached the top, Bernice could see him peeking around the corner of her door. I'm still awake, Papa. I think I am, anyway, she said sleepily. I think a warm bath might not be a good idea if I want to listen to a story. And I really wanted to listen to a story tonight. Like something about a bunny who could hop to the moon. Or maybe Boo Boo and Kai Kai eating chocolate from a tree. Or maybe. She let out a big yawn. Papa Bear smiled softly. I think tonight you can make your own stories. In your dreams. Bernice let out another great big yawn. Is Cookie here yet? She will be soon, papa Bear said gently. She probably doesn't know how tired you are tonight. I'm sure she'll be here sleeping beside you by the time you wake up in the morning. Okay, Papa. Thank you for the yummy cookies and the delicious dinner. You're welcome, Little Bear. Love you, Papa. Love you too, Little Bear. And with the soft sounds of Bernice's little snorts, Papa Bear turned down her light, gave her a kiss on the forehead, and whispered, sweet dreams, Little Bear. And that is the end of our story. Good night. Sleep tight.
