Now on to our story.
It's a very cold day and Bernice and Ethan are rushing to get home before they freeze. Bernice gives Cookie some rubs and heads to the kitchen to talk to Papa Bear about her day and ask for his help.
Bernice and the Gift of Giving.
I need to really rush home because if I don't, I might turn into some kind of snow sculpture and then someone will put lights on me or something, bernice said, racing from the school bus stop toward her front steps. I'm right behind you. It's super cold today, ethan called out. I think my breath is freezing. Every time I breathe, it's like a snowstorm explosion.
Bernice laughed. I thought for sure they were going to cancel school today, but I'm glad they didn't because. Because art class was super fun. Anyway, I'm here. Let me know if you need help with your math homework. I will see you later, alligator. After a while, crocodile. Bernice shouted back as she hurried inside, closing the door quickly so that their warm home wouldn't suddenly turn into a giant refrigerator. Hi Papa. Hi Cookie. I survived the biggest blizzard of the century without even needing a snowmobile or a dog sled Team.
Welcome home, little bear. I'm happy to hear you braved the snow. Hupa Bear called from the kitchen. Come in when you're ready. I have some yummy treats today.
I smell them already, bernice said, breathing deeply. Chocolate, vanilla, maybe cinnamon or something. And Papa, I think my tummy might start gurgling any second.
Just as she sat down to take off her winter boots, too cold for sneakers, even though she still considered them fine and the fancy boots Mama bought were too slippery, Cookie padded around the corner, carrying something in her mouth. Cookie, that isn't what it looks like, is it? Um, I hope not anyway, because if that's a mouse, I don't think Mama will.
Bernice squinted. Oh. Oh, that must be a new toy. I really thought that was a real mouse for a second. That would be pretty funny. Well, kind of funny, but not for Mama.
Cookie sat down and waited. Bernice was kind of wet and cold, which was a no no for hugs and pets. Bernice put her boots in the tray, hung up her jacket, and sat in a dry spot so she could pet Cookie. It's safe now, she told her.
Cookie immediately walked over and plopped herself between Bernice's legs and and began purring loudly like a tiny engine. How was your day today, Cookie? Did you miss me? I missed you. I could have used your help on my English essay. Not because I did badly, actually. The teacher marked the essays in class and I did great. But you always help me feel calm and stuff. I sometimes get nervous when I write essays. Math and science don't make me nervous. I'm super good at those.
Cookie raised her chin for extra scratches. And Bobby did great too, bernice continued. He's getting so serious lately. I kind of miss the super silly Bobby, the one with all the bad jokes. But Papa says people grow and change and stuff. Maybe he'll be silly again soon.
Cookie blinked with sleepy approval. You wouldn't believe how wintry it is outside, bernice said. If this weather keeps up, they might cancel school for a whole month and we'll have to do online school, which is not the same, but better than nothing, I guess. I thought I might blow away and turn into a frozen sculpture outside. Then you'd have to help Papa look for me. But maybe you wouldn't because you don't like snow much. I would save you, though. If you got lost in a snowbank, I would rescue you right away.
One of the kids at school said his dog went outside once and they couldn't see him anymore because he got lost inside a snow pile, so they had to go looking or something.
Just then, Bernice's belly made a loud gurgling noise, which startled Cookie just a tiny bit. Sorry, bernice said. We had gym class today and swimming this morning, so now I'm really hungry. I think I'm going to eat three plates of food tonight.
Super smart athletes like me need fuel to stay healthy. Anyway, Appa's treats smell super yummy, so I think I'll go have a snack. I hope you'll still help me with my homework. It's math. Easy peasy, so afterwards we can play if you like.
Bernice gently stood up, grabbed her backpack, and ran into the kitchen where Papa Bear was setting down the most delicious looking cup of hot chocolate Bernice had ever seen. Is that hot chocolate, Papa? Wow, it looks too delicious to drink.
Papa Bear laughed. It is hot chocolate, and I tasted it earlier. I think you'll want to drink it. I figured after all that cold wind and snow, something warm might be nice. Yeah, Papa, it's like a blizzard out there. I almost needed you to rescue me.
Bernice washed her hands at the sink. I'm surprised they didn't cancel school today. Luckily the bus stop isn't too far. Papa Bear said the weather changed pretty fast this afternoon. You might even get a day off tomorrow.
Yeah, I think so too. What kind of cookies are these, Papa? She took a bite. Mmm, yummy.
These are cinnamon vanilla oatmeal cookies. I thought the cinnamon might warm you up a bit. I did a taste test earlier.
You always do taste tests, Papa, even when you know they'll be amazing. I think you just like eating cookies as much as I do. Bernice teased whipped cream foam on her lip.
Papa Bear chuckled. I do love cookies. Now tell me all about your day. Did you have writing in English class?
Yep. We had to write an essay in class, but it was okay. The teacher corrected them right there and I did. Well, I still write a little slow, though, because Bobby and Ethan finished before me, which is okay, I guess. And Papa Bobby is even more serious lately. No cracking jokes or talking during class and stuff. But I know you always say that people change and stuff, but I sometimes miss his jokes and other stuff. I guess he might be that way someday again.
I'm sure he will, papa said gently. He might just be focused right now. Or maybe he sees how hard you're working and wants to try harder too.
I guess so. He inspires me sometimes, so maybe it's my turn to inspire him. I still hope he tells some silly jokes sometimes. Bernice took another sip of cocoa. Ah, this is so good. And it makes my tummy warm.
Anyway, we didn't really share lunch today, she continued. I think I was too hungry after swimming. Ethan and I traded my apple for his banana and Bobby gave me some of his veggies because he was full. Gertrude was homesick today and so was May and like half the class.
Yes. Papa Bear nodded. I hear there's a virus going around, so we'll make sure you get lots of rest just in case.
Yeah. Oh, I almost forgot. I need to ask you something, if it's okay, bernice said, suddenly remembering. So you know how Bobby and I and Gertrude and Ethan always give each other presents? And we sort of do that with our class sometimes, too. Papa Bear nodded, stirring his tea.
Well, this year our teacher is helping us give presents to families who might not be able to give their kids Christmas gifts. We are sponsoring one kid from another school. We don't know who they are, which is kind of mysterious, but we get to buy them presents and things they need.
Bernice paused thoughtfully. And I might still make something small for Bobby because I know he always gets tons of presents and so do I, so I think Helping someone else is better this year.
She took a sip of cocoa, leaving a foam dot on her nose. I just need your help, she continued, because you always help me get the right presents for Bobby and Ethan and Gertrude. And I want to get the right presents for this kid too. Like something that feels special for them.
Papa Bear smiled warmly. I think that is a wonderful idea, Little Bear. And yes, I will help you. Giving is one of the most important messages of Christmas. We try to do good things all year, but during Christmas, when everyone is busy decorating and wrapping and thinking about presents, it's extra important to think about others.
Bernice nodded slowly. Yeah, I want them to feel happy when they open something. Maybe they will feel like I do when I get something special. I wonder what they like. Maybe they like books or dinosaurs or sparkly socks. Or maybe they need warm mittens or something.
She paused again. Oh, and Bobby said he might paint me a picture this year. A real picture. Like an actual painting. A super huge one, the size of my wall or something. And Ethan said he wants to pick out a collection of books for me to read from his grandmother's attic library. Her house has like a secret library in the roof. So I think I might make something too. Maybe cookies or treats. You could help me, right?
Papa Bear nodded. I would love to help with that. We can choose something thoughtful. When you give a gift, something from the heart matters most.
Bernice smiled at the idea. Maybe when we buy things for this mystery kid, we could wrap it nicely and put in a card. And I could write something like, I hope you have fun with this or something.
That's a great idea, papa Bear said, taking a sip of tea. Do you have homework tonight?
Yeah, I have some math worksheets because school might be cancelled tomorrow because of snow. And my English teacher gave us reading. And I did promise Cookie that I would play with her. Is that homework? And I want to read one of my science books, too. I want to know more about the science of snowflakes.
Papa Bear chuckled. I'm not sure playing with Cookie is homework. Oh, and Papa, could you make a super amount of food for dinner? My swim coach keeps telling us to eat lots so we can stay strong. And I'm going to be super hungry. I'm sure we'll have plenty to eat, papa Bear said. Your body needs fuel to grow. Yeah, and so does my brain, bernice added proudly. Papa Bear raised an eyebrow. That's true. And if you need help with math, well, maybe wait for Mama. Bernice laughed. I thought you said you were an expert in everything. Papa Bear laughed too. I think I might have exaggerated, but if you need me, I'll be in the kitchen. Thank you for the treats, Papa. You are welcome, Little Bear.
After finishing her math homework and eating a huge dinner, Bernice began her bedtime routine. She used Mama Bear's special bubble bath because her muscles were sore, and the bottle said good for sore muscles, which felt like a scientific guarantee.
Then she did a few stretches, set out her clothes for school just in case it wasn't canceled, and finally jumped into bed. Arrange Twigga, Wolfie, and Madeline just right, pulled the blanket up to her chin and called out. It's that time, Papa. She called. And what time is that, Little Bear? Papa Bear called back from the kitchen.
I think it's time for a story.
Papa Bear walked up the stairs more quietly than usual. Mama Bear had told him that if he stomped like a marching band again, something in the house would probably need repairs.
He peeked around the door. Are you still awake? I sure am. And Cookie is already here waiting. I think she wants to hear a story, too.
Well, then, we have a big audience tonight. Papa Bear laughed. I'm surprised you were able to walk up the stairs at all after that giant dinner. I think you ate half the lasagna by yourself.
Your lasagna was yummy, Papa. And Mama's salad. She makes the best salads. She certainly does, papa said. And I think Mama Bear is pretty proud that you and your friends are trying to bring some cheer to others this Christmas. Bernice smiled. We just want to help. It's not a big deal. It is a big deal, actually, papa said gently, but he didn't press any further.
Now then, how about we return to the magical forest tonight? Maybe visit Boo Boo and Kai Kai? That sounds good, bernice whispered. Papa leaned down and gave her a hug and kiss. I love you, Papa. And I love you too, Little Bear.
Once upon a time, in a world full of magic and fun, there lived a brave little bear named Booboo. She lived in a large castle at the edge of a mystical forest. In this forest were unicorns, fairies, pixies, gnomes, and all manner of insects, birds, and animals. It was a wonderful place.
Her best friend was a young dragon called Kai Kai, and they liked to play as much as they could. The kingdom they lived in was full of people who lived in the meadows, the hills, and those who lived in the forest, and they all lived in harmony.
On this day, Bubu and Kai Kai were cold and were looking for ways they might get warm.
Booboo pulled her scarf tighter around her neck, but it didn't help much. Kai Ki. I think my nose might actually freeze and fall off. At least you have a scarf, Kai Kai said, his teeth chattering. I tried breathing a little fire to warm us up, but the wind just blows it away.
They stood in the castle garden, both shivering. Booboo's fur was fluffed up against the cold, and even Kai Kai's scales looked like they were trying to huddle closer together. Wait. Didn't Bluebell mention that new bakery? Boo Boo said suddenly. The one with hot chocolate from chocolate trees? Kai Kai's eyes lit up. Let's go right now before we turn into ice sculptures.
The bakery was everything they'd hoped for. Warm air rushed out when Booboo pushed open the door, and the smell of chocolate was so strong it made Kai Kai drool all over the floor. Two hot chocolates, please, Booboo said to the friendly gnome behind the counter. The kind made from the chocolate trees. Our special specialty, the gnome said cheerfully. She poured thick, steaming chocolate from a special pot into two cups that seemed to glow with warmth.
Boo Boo took a sip and felt the warmth spread all the way down to her toes. Oh, wow. This is amazing.
Kai Kai had already finished half his cup. I can feel my scales again.
They sat by the window, watching snow fall outside when Booboo suddenly stopped mid sip. You know what? If we're this cold, Bixie must be really cold. He lives all alone in the forest. That's true, Kai Kai said. And he's always sharing his treats with us.
Booboo stood up. We should get him a hot chocolate, too.
The gnome packaged up a third hot chocolate in a special container. This will stay hot for hours, she promised, even in this cold.
Flying through the cold air was harder now, but Booboo didn't mind as much. She held the special container carefully, making sure not to spill it. My wings are getting tired, Kai Kai admitted. But we're almost there.
Below them, the familiar path through the forest appeared, lined with trees and magical bushes that turned color in the cold. Everything looked white and quiet. There's his house. Booboo pointed to the large tree with its cozy windows, glass glowing warm and yellow.
Kai Kai landed as gently as he could, trying not to step on any plants. He was much better after having to do the same at Booboo's castle. Booboo slid off his back and walked up to Bixie's door, the hot chocolate still warm in her hands. Bixie opened the door, his eyes widening in surprise. Booboo Kai Kai, what are you doing out in this weather? We brought you something, Booboo said, holding out the container. Hot chocolate. We thought you might be cold.
Bixie's face broke into the biggest smile. You flew all the way here just to bring me hot chocolate? You're always sharing with us, Kai, Kai said, shrugging like it was no big deal. Come in, come in. Bixie ushered them inside to his fireplace. You know, the best kind of warmth doesn't just come from chocolate or fires. It comes from friends who think of you.
They sat together sipping and warming up, glad they'd made the trip.
And with the gentle sound of Bernice's snorts, Papa Bear turned down her light, gave her a kiss on the forehead and said, I love you Little Bear.
And that is the end of our story. Good night, sleep tight.
