Hello friends and welcome to Sleep Tight Stories. Bernice has just gotten home from swimming and has so much to tell Papa Bear. After she chats with Cookie for a while about what she was doing, she heads into the kitchen to tell Papa about her afternoon and have a special treat for Snack Bernice dreams about going to the Olympics. Bernice walked in the front door of her small house, still a little bit wet from swimming, and sat down to take off her sneakers. She didn't really need to sit down to take them off anymore. They were loose now so it was easy to just take them off with her toes. But this way she knew that Cookie, her cat, would come to say hello to her. Talking with Cookie was super fun. Hi Papa, I am home from swimming and because I am a swimmer now I need some yummy snacks. Bernice said just as her stomach started to make gurgling noises so loud that maybe it could be heard from across the street. Okay little bear, you know where I am. I have some specially shaped cookies for you today. Papa Bear said in his super deep voice. Just then, soft feet could be heard running down the hallway as Cookie came to say hello to Bernice. Hi Cookie, did you miss me this afternoon? I'm not sure if you want to give me a headbutt or not because I might still be wet in places. I was in the water today and I know you don't like water. Cookie gave Bernice a head butt and Bernice gave her some pets. I had a super cool afternoon Cookie. Well, it wasn't cool outside, it was actually really hot, but you know what I mean. Today I had swimming practice and I am swimming super fast. But guess what? Bobby was there and it's the first time I have seen him in forever. It felt like forever. Anyway, we laughed for a while but then our coach made us practice. In some practices we play games, but today was all drills and stuff. Our coach once made the Olympic swim team so she is like an expert and knows everything. Cookie laid down on her back so that Bernice would rub her belly. You really love belly rubs, don't you Cookie? I guess it's hard to reach certain spots when you are a Cat, I don't think I like belly rubs because I am kind of ticklish. Mama will rub my belly, though, when I am sick, but I guess that's not the same. Guess what? Bernice whispered. Bobby's mom invited me over to his house for pizza and salad. She said there might even be ice cream. Pizza and ice cream are some of my favorite foods. But I love cookies, of course. And hamburgers and butter chicken and quesadillas and stuff like that. You and I are very much the same, right? We both like to eat lots of different things. Except for parsnips and maybe mushy zucchini. They are kind of yucky. Cookie purred in response. Does exercise make you hungry, Cookie? I get super hungry after swimming, running, or I guess lots of different things. Our coach says to make sure we eat enough so we can grow to be strong swimmers. That sounds fine to me, especially since she didn't say anything about eating mushy zucchini. Cookie then stared at Bernice's tummy as it made more gurgling noises. Well, my tummy is sending me messages, so I better go have my snack before Papa eats them all. You can come in the kitchen with me if you like. Bernice said as she got up, put her sneakers away and walked into the kitchen. Hi, Little Bear. I think Cookie missed you this afternoon. She kept looking out the window waiting for you to come home. Yeah, I think she missed me a lot. We are best friends, so that's the way it is, I guess. Bernice said as she went to wash her hands in the sink. How was swimming practice today? Did you have fun?
Papa Bear
Papa Bear asked.
Bernice
Yeah, Papa. It was super fun and kind of difficult, but I like challenges. The coach had us working on the butterfly and it was super hard. I like freestyle best and we did drills and some kind of workout. But guess who is back, Papa? Bobby. Bobby came to practice today and it was so nice to go to swimming practice together again. Bernice said with a big smile. I heard he came back from camp and I also heard that he invited you over to his place tonight for dinner. Can I go, Papa? I won't eat too much. Just like six slices of pizza and some ice cream. I'll eat all the salad Bobby's mom likes to give us. I promise. That's a lot of pizza. Yes, you can go. Once we have our snack and you get changed, I'll drive you to Bobby's house.
Papa Bear
Yay.
Bernice
He said. We might watch some of the Olympics. I really think after today I might be able to go to the Olympics for swimming and running. I'm not sure which yet, but our swimming coach says I am improving super fast. And she was an Olympian, right? So maybe I can be one too. You know what I always say. You can do whatever you want to do if you try hard enough. Yeah, I work hard. Papa, your cookies look super cool. They look like Olympic rings. They taste pretty good too. I had to have a few cookies earlier to make sure they tasted okay. Papa Bear said with a smile as he put a plate of cookies and a glass of milk on the kitchen table for Bernice. Are you sure it was just for testing, Papa? I think you just love to eat cookies. Bernice said with a laugh. They certainly are super yummy. After eating a cookie and having a drink of milk, Bernice asked papa, do you think I can go to the Olympics one day? I mean, I'm not sure which sport yet. I'm really good at running and my swimming is getting super good too. And of course I need to be a scientist when I grow up. And I still think about being a painter. Oh, and I might have lots of cats too, because cats really love me. I'm going to be super busy. Watching the Olympics has been inspiring. Your mama loves the running events and I like everything else. Those athletes have worked really hard to be able to participate. Yeah, I know. I can work that hard too. Maybe I will be the first famous artist and scientist to go to the Olympics for two sports. The swimming events on TV were so fun to watch. They were racing super fast. And I want to race too. And I kind of want to win. Just like how I ran faster than everyone at school. It's great to have dreams and goals, Little Bear. And being your best at something is really fun. Sharing your talent with others is a great part of it. Dreams give us something to try to achieve. They give us purpose. What's important is to keep enjoying your swimming, running and working hard. If you love what you do and keep practicing, you'll get better and better. I know you can achieve whatever you want to do. Swimming and running are super fun. Bernice said as she took another bite of her cookie. I guess I just have to keep practicing and keep trying to swim and run super fast, she added. That sounds good, Little Bear. I'll be there cheering for you with lots of cookies and hugs. Yeah, I need lots of cookies and hugs, Papa. Bernice said with a smile as she washed down another cookie with her glass of cold milk. Can I take some of these cookies to share with Bobby and his Mom? Bernice asked. I think Bobby will like the shape of the cookies. You certainly can. I'll put some cookies in a container while you get ready to go to Bobby's house. It's that time, Papa, said Bernice. And what time is that, little Bear?
Papa Bear
Papa Bear asked.
Bernice
It's time to see who can yawn the most and maybe get a few papa hugs. Bernice said with a great big yawn. I think I will win the yawning competition. Papa Bear said with a yawn. Maybe I could go to the Olympics for yawning. You definitely could, Papa. You might even win a gold medal. Bernice said with a laugh. Ha ha. Did you have fun at Bobby's house this evening?
Papa Bear
Yeah, Papa.
Bernice
It was fun to laugh with Bobby again. Other than cookie, he is my best friend. And the pizza, Papa, was super delicious. One had pineapple on it and another had some kind of fancy cheese which Bobby and I couldn't pronounce and I kind of forgot the name. Bobby's mom made us a sundae, Papa, and we could put anything we wanted on top of. I put some caramel sauce on it and some of your cookies that I brought with us, Bernice said while she rubbed her tummy. Oh, and I had some salad too, Papa, because Mama says I need to eat more vegetables. Your mama is pretty smart, Papa Bear said. What did you do after dinner? Well, Bobby and I were really full because I think we ate two pizzas or something like that. So we decided to rest a bit and watch some of the swimming races on TV. There is this super fast swimmer called Summer McIntosh who is really cool, Papa. She can go super fast and she is really young. I think I will swim that fast when I am as old as she is. Bobby wanted to watch some of the running, but that wasn't on yet, so we watched highlights of other stuff. Then when our bellies were rested, we did some science stuff in Bobby's science lab. But mostly we just shared what we did all summer. It was fun, but now I feel super sleepy. Bernice said with another great big yawn. Maybe eating all that pizza made you tired. Papa Bear said with a yawn. Bernice yawned again. So do you want to wait until next time for a story?
Papa Bear
Papa Bear asked.
Bernice
Yeah, I guess so, Papa. I'll just listen to stories tonight. Did you do all the things you need to do before bed? I did. I had to scrub my face hard because there was some silly tomato sauce that wouldn't come off. Mama has some new shower soap. She really likes soap that smells like flowers, bernice said with a smile. She certainly does. But I think I like the smell of fruit soap better. Especially watermelon. Are you comfy?
Papa Bear
Papa Bear asked.
Bernice
Yes, Papa. How about Twigga, Wolfie, and Madeline? Are they ready for an early bedtime? They say they are ready. How about you, Cookie? Are you ready to have a nap? Cookie purred. Okay, give me a hug and a kiss and I'll leave your story on. Thank you, Papa. And that is the end of our story. Good night. Sleep tight.
