Now on to our story. Have you ever had a dream where you were someone or something else? Bernice has a dream where she is not herself and when she wakes up she wants to quickly tell Papa Bear all about it before she forgets. Papa Bear and Bernice laugh and talk together about her dream. Bernice dreams she is Cookie, her cat. Good morning, Papa, Bernice said as she rubbed her eyes. You are up early, little Bear. I haven't even started breakfast yet and Mama is still out running. That's okay. I had a dream and it was a long one and I just have to tell you about it before it disappears forever. Isn't it strange how you can have a dream and then it just vanishes? I mean, it could have been the bestest dream ever. Or maybe I solved all the math problems I was having trouble with and then I forget and have to do them all over again. Sometimes it is unfortunate how the brain works, Papa Bear replied. But that's how our brain deals with things. I know, Papa. We studied that in science, I think. Or maybe I read it in a book. Sometimes my books are way ahead of my science teacher. Papa Bear smiled. Was it a bad dream? No, Papa. It was about Cookie. And she can only give good dreams, I think. So in the dream she could talk and think, think. And I think maybe I was inside her mind or something. Kind of like those stories where someone turns into an animal. I saw the world through her eyes for a while, and then later she was talking to me. I do sometimes wish Cookie could talk. She communicates in her own way, I guess, but talking would be easier. What did she say? Well, bernice said, settling into her chair. At first she just meowed a lot. But then the meow started making sense and I could understand cat talk, I guess. We were upstairs in my room and I was practicing my writing. Cookie said it would help my writing if I petted her head more and scratched under her chin. Papa Bear raised an eyebrow. So I did, but my writing didn't get any better. Then she said maybe I needed to rub under her chin for even longer. So I did, but my writing was still exactly the same. Then Cookie jumped onto my lap, rolled onto her back, and said that if I rubbed her belly, she was absolutely sure my writing would improve. Papa Bear laughed. So I rubbed her belly for a while and then tried writing again. But Papa, my writing was still the same. It sounds to me like Cookie was just trying to get pets. Papa Bear said. Yeah, that's what I thought, too. So I told her, cookie, I don't think you're helping me at all. I think you just want belly rubs and stuff. And what did she say? She jumped onto my bed and started cleaning her face like she always does. I think she might have the cleanest face in the whole world. Then she told me that yes, she did want pets, but it also seemed like I was working very hard and could probably use a break. And what better break is there than petting a cat? Papa Bear nodded thoughtfully and honestly. Bernice continued. She kind of had a point. What happened next? She told me a story about when she was a kitten. She said she couldn't jump very high back then and that she used to fall on her back whenever she missed a jump. She said she didn't really remember being upset about it. She just knew that if she kept trying, eventually she would make the jump. All she needed was perseverance and a little patience. Bernice smiled. And now, Papa, she can jump almost anywhere. That is a very wise cat, papa Bear said, taking a sip of his morning coffee. Yeah, I think so. So I guess the moral of the story is that if you want to become better at writing, you should keep practicing. No, Papa. I think the moral is that you should pet your cat more. Hupa Bear laughed. Okay, but so then When I started writing again, it seemed better because maybe I didn't give up. And I just kept practicing. My writing in my dream was better than in real life, which isn't very fair, I think. But then later, Papa, I dreamed that I was Cookie. And it was so cool because the world looks completely different when you're small and close to the ground. I looked like a giant and. And you looked super enormous, like a skyscraper. And Cookie didn't mind at all. She just climbed right up your leg and asked for a hug. I hope I didn't scratch you because I had long claws and stuff. Super long claws, actually. Papa Bear smiled. And then Papa. It was like I had all this energy and just had to run around. So I did. The carpet in the living room looked completely different when your Cookie size. It was like running through a field or something. And I could go under the couch where I saw one of my hair ties that I lost. So I have to remember to check later because maybe Cookie played with it. Bernice paused. There were some other things under there too. Dust bunnies or maybe giant dust monsters. I'm not sure. Hmm. Papa Bear said. Maybe I'd better vacuum under the couch if there are dust monsters living there. Well, there were in my dream anyway. Though Mama was vacuuming a couple of days ago. She does that sometimes when she gets bored of reading or when you're busy doing something. Papa Bear laughed. Anyway, after I ran under the couch, I raced into the kitchen and chased something across the floor. Maybe it was an ant or maybe a beetle. The details are kind of fuzzy, but I remember feeling like I absolutely had to chase it. Like there wasn't even a decision to make. That sounds very catlike. And Papa, the kitchen table was gigantic. Like a mountain with legs. And the stairs, they were huge. I know they aren't really huge because I run up them all the time, but when you're Cookie, each step is almost as tall as your head. I remember standing at the bottom thinking, wow, this is a lot of stairs. Papa Bear chuckled. And everything smelled different. Not just a little different. Super different. I could smell your coffee before you even got to the kitchen. I could smell toast crumbs under the table. I could smell where Mama had been sitting earlier. I could even smell my own sneakers by the front door. You could smell your sneakers? Papa asked. Yeah, they didn't smell very good. Papa. I think I might need to spray something in them or something. Papa Bear laughed. I could smell things I didn't even know existed. Honestly, I think being a cat would be exhausting. There's just so much information everywhere. Do you remember anything else? Well, I finally understood why Cookie sits by the window all day. I always thought she was just looking at birds, but it's way more than that. There are birds and squirrels and leaves moving and bugs flying and people walking by and shadows changing. It's like 20 television shows happening at the same time, and I could sort of understand what was going on. But mostly I just wanted to chase things. That does sound busy. It was. And I finally understand how Cookie always knows when it's me coming home from school. In the dream, I could hear myself talking before I even got through the door. Then I realized Cookie knows exactly who's coming home because everybody sounds different. Mama sounds different from you. You sound different from me. Even our footsteps are different. Bernice grinned. Especially yours, Papa. Your footsteps cause vibrations through the whole house. You really are like a giant to Cookie. Papa Bear laughed. I think we might all be giants to Cookie. He took another sip of coffee. That was quite a dream, Little Bear. You know something else, Papa? What's that? All this dreaming made me really hungry. Do you think we could have honey cakes for breakfast? Just in case my tummy starts gurgling and scares Cookie and stuff? Papa Bear laughed. Okay. Honey cakes it is. It was a rainy day, and after finishing a little bit of homework, Bernice decided to spend most of the day reading with Mama. She finished the last book that Ethan lent her, so he gave her another, and she almost finished it all already. After a delicious dinner of some of her favorite vegetables and stuff, a few board games, and chat with Bobby on the pad, she started her bedtime routine. She took a warm bath with some multicolored bubbles that smelled like a fruit basket, brushed her teeth and all that important stuff, did some yoga with Mama, and laid out her favorite clothes for the morning. Finally, she jumped into bed, which caused Twigga, Wolfie, and Madeline to jump up too, pulled the blanket up to her chin, and called out, it's that time, Papa. And what time is that, Little Bear? Papa asked from downstairs. Time for a short story, I think. Papa Bear lumbered up the stairs, trying to be as light on his feet as he could until he arrived just outside Bernice's bedroom door. Are you sure you can stay awake? He asked. I think so, Papa. Maybe a short story. A mini story. I think I like that word, bernice said with a great big yawn. Did you do all the things you need to do before bed? I think so. I had a soapy bath. I brushed My teeth. And I did some yoga with Mama. Are you comfy? Yes, Papa. How about Twiggle, Wolfy and Madeline? Are they ready for a story too? They said they are ready and I know Cookie will be with me here any minute now. Okay, give me a hug and a kiss and I'll tell you a mini story. Thank you, Papa. Once upon a time, in a world full of magic and fun, there lived a brave little bear named Booboo. She lived in a large castle at the edge of a mystical forest, and in this forest were unicorns, fairies, gnomes, and all manner of insects, birds and animals. It was a wonderful place. Her best friend was a young dragon called Kai Kai, and they liked to play as much as they could. On this day, Booboo and Kai Kai were sitting at a small cafe table in one of the most unusual spots in the entire mystical forest. All around them grew white chocolate trees. These trees are rare and beautiful, with pale silver bark and leaves that shimmered like snow in the sunlight. Most chocolate trees in the forest were dark, their bark rich and brown, their smell deep and, well, chocolatey. But white chocolate trees were something else in entirely. Their smell was softer, sweeter, like warm vanilla and cream all mixed together. The cafe had built itself right into the middle of a small grove of them, and the whole place glowed with a soft, milky light. Kai Kai had both paws wrapped around an enormous mug of hot white chocolate milk, which had a cloud of whipped cream on top so large it was almost larger than his already very large head. This Kai Kai said seriously, might be the best place in the kingdom. You say that everywhere we go, Booboo said. And I'm always right, Kaiki replied, taking a long sip. Booboo smiled and looked up at the white chocolate trees above them. Their branches caught the afternoon light and scattered it in soft patterns across the table. I had the strangest dream last night, she said. Good strange or bad strange? Kai Kai asked, admiring the whipped cream on his mug. Good strange. Really good, actually. Booboo wrapped her hands around her own mug. I dreamed I was Shimmer. Kai Kai looked up. Our Shimmer the Pixie. Yes. I was her completely. Booboo paused, trying to find the right words, not just watching her or flying alongside her. I was inside her, seeing everything she sees. Kai Kai put his mug down. At first it was just the flying, Booboo continued. And that part was wonderful. Everything was enormous. The flowers were like trees, the mushrooms were like houses. A raindrop landing on a leaf sounded like thunder. She smiled. You were absolutely gigantic by the way, obviously. Kai Kai said. But then it was evening and I felt what Shimmer feels when her work begins. Bubu's voice got quieter. She takes out the charm her elder gave her and her whole chest fills up with this feeling like responsibility, but warm because she knows that somewhere in the Dark Forest a little hedgehog is waiting to find its way home. Or a young rabbit who got turned around and without the lights she makes, they'd just be lost out there in the dark. Kai Kai ignored his drink. I felt how much she cared, Booboo said. Not just a little. It was everything to her. And in the dream I understood her completely, Completely. Every part of her. Kai Kai looked out at the white chocolate trees for a moment. A delicious looking leaf drifted down and landed on the table between them. I never thought about her evenings, he said quietly. I just thought she flew around and it looked fun. Me too, Booboo said. Until I was her Kai. Kai picked up his mug again, but he held it without drinking, just thinking. Do you think, he said slowly, that if everyone could do that, just be someone else for a little while, really be them, things would be different? I think so, Booboo said. Even just for a moment. Even just long enough to understand. Kai Kai nodded then, because he was Kai Kai, he said. I'd still want to come back to myself, though Shimmer probably doesn't get nearly enough white chocolate milk. Boo Boo laughed. They sat together for a while after that under the trees with their warm mugs and the sweet vanilla smell all around them. Above them the white chocolate leaves caught the last of the afternoon sun and glowed softly like something almost magical. Which of course it was. And with the soft sound of Bernice's little snorts, Papa Bear turned down her light, gave her a kiss on the forehead and whispered, I love you, little Bear. And that is the end of our story. Good night. Sleep tight, Sam.
