Today is the day when Bernice is going to go on her long bike ride with Mama and Papa Bear. But when she wakes up it is raining really hard. Bernice cannot believe it. More rain. It has been raining so much lately and now they won't be able to go for their bike ride. What is she going to do? Bernice is very disappointed. Bernice lay in bed with the covers up over her head. She felt like staying there all day and didn't want to get up at all, even with the smell of honey cakes coming up the stairs from the kitchen. Silly rain. How could it rain today? Doesn't the weather realize just how important today is? She grumbled. Bernice woke up early this morning because this was going to be the day of her long bike ride with Mama and Papa. There was going to be a picnic and lots of ice cream and she was going to show Papa just how much stronger she was. Her legs were super strong now, but as she opened her eyes she could see that her room was covered in gray and she could hear the sound of heavy rain and thunder in the distance. There was no way that Papa would want to go on a super long bike ride in this weather. I might as well just stay in bed. Bernice said with a humph. Are you awake yet little Bear? I am making us some yummy honey cakes and you wouldn't want to miss out. Papa Bear said in his super deep voice. Mama already said she might eat all of yours because they taste so yummy. Bernice's tummy started to make gurgling noises. The smell of honey cakes was pretty strong and they did smell super yummy. Delicious. Nope. Bernice said to herself. I am not getting out of bed. I am just too sad. Just then Cookie came into the room, making her usual morning chirping noise. She almost always seemed to be in a good mood. Well, most of the time anyway. Cookie jumped up on Bernice's bed and gave her a headbutt. Good morning, Cookie. I would say bad morning, but that sounds weird even though it is a super silly day, Bernice said as she pulled the covers down far enough so that she could give Cookie some pets. Today was supposed to be our big bike trip and I was super excited, but then this happened. Bernice said, pointing to her window, which had rain streaming down it. It's raining so hard, Cookie, that I bet the worms are wearing raincoats. It has been raining so much lately. I mean, what more can I do? Inside I went to an art class, read all kinds of books, jumped up and down in the rain to see how muddy I could get, and even did a science experiment to measure the amount of rainfall. It was a lot. Bernice sighed. I bet where Bobby is right now it's sunny and warm and he is able to play outside and go on rowboats and play basketball and stuff. Meanwhile, I have to stay inside and be bored. Bernice, are you still in bed? Mama Bear said as she knocked on the frame of her door. Papa is making delicious honey cakes for you and I had mine already and they are really yummy. You will be disappointed if you don't come down and eat some. Get ready and come down, okay? I'm going to go and get us some treats for the day while you have your breakfast. Mama Bear then went down the stairs, singing a song as she went. It seems everyone is cheerful except for me, Bernice thought. I guess I don't want Papa to be disappointed too, bernice said to Cookie. So I better get ready to start the day, even if it is a disappointing one. Bernice slowly got out of bed and started her morning routine. She was going to wear the special biking clothes that she got especially for this trip. The shirt had a T rex on it and the shorts had some padding in them so she would be comfortable riding her bike for hours and hours, but instead she got out her comfy jeans and T shirt. After brushing her teeth and washing up, she slowly went downstairs to the kitchen, each step on the stairs deliberate and slow. Her tummy made more noises when the smell of honey cakes became even stronger. She walked into the kitchen with a frown on her face and sat heavily at the kitchen table with a deep sigh. Bernice, papa Bear said with a smile that seemed too wide to Bernice, you look far too sad Maybe some of these honey cakes will put you in a better mood. Of course I am sad, Papa. Today was going to be the start of a week of fun. We were going to go and have all kinds of treats and stuff and I really like riding bikes, Papa, but it's always been raining lately and that's just not fair. It's super disappointing. I'm sorry Little Bear, but there isn't much we can do about the weather other than make the best of it. It's been raining more than normal for this time of year, but we don't need sunshine to have fun. Sunshine would help, Bernice said as she took a bite of her honey cakes. I just can't imagine what I might do today except be super bored. I bet where Bobby is it's super nice and sunny. There is nothing wrong with being bored and you are so creative that I'm sure you can come up with all kinds of ideas. Papa Bear said as he drank some coffee. It's not just here where it is raining either. It's raining where Bobby is too. It's a silly year for rain. Well then he might be as bored as I am. Bernice sighed. I guess I am mostly disappointed, Papa. It was going to be a fun day. I know, Little Bear. I am disappointed too. But we can still have fun and make the best of the day. You can still go outside. It's just not safe to go on long bike rides when it's raining so hard. I guess I could go outside and do stuff, but my rubber boots might need rubber boots because it's raining so much. Bernice said with a small smile. They might. And you know what? Some of my best memories are from times when things didn't go as planned. Like there was the time your mama and I had a flat tire en route to a concert we really wanted to go to. We were out in the middle of nowhere and had to walk for hours and hours to find help. We laughed harder that day than all the days prior. It's not about what we miss out on, but about what we make of the time we have. I guess there are still lots of fun things we could do, Bernice said with a smile. We could have a cozy day indoors. We could build the biggest, most amazing blanket fort ever. We can bring snacks, tell stories and even have a little camp out in the living room. Or a picnic. Mama went to the store to get some treats for us for later and I wasn't supposed to say anything, but I think she might be getting some different flavored ice Cream. Yay. That sounds super yummy, Papa. The rain can be fun too. Maybe we could put on our rain boots and raincoats, go outside in the rain and explore the neighborhood park, jump in some puddles and feel the raindrops on our faces. It's like going to a water park right in our own neighborhood. I like getting muddy and stuff. And it would be fun to wear my raincoat again because it makes me look like a duck. We could bake some cookies together. You can be the head cookie baker and I'll be your assistant. We can try out some new recipes and add the cookies to the ice cream that your mama is bringing home. That would be a yummy treat, don't you think, Little Bear? Papa Bear said with a great big smile. It would be super yummy, Papa. Bernice was always put in a better mood by the thought of a tasty treat, especially after doing other fun things. Already in a better mood, Bernice said. Well, I read about this really cool experiment where we can measure how much rain falls in a certain amount of time. We can make a rain gauge using a plastic bottle and then see how much rainwater collects. I tried this already, but I don't think my experiment was as very good as what I read. So I could try again. And then Papa, we could all go for a walk in the rain and check out how the park is different when it is so wet and we could jump in puddles. Papa Bear said with a laugh. Yeah, I think so. Bernice said with a smile. All we need for the rain gauge is a plastic bottle, some pebbles or small stones, a ruler, and a marker. First we would cut the top off the bottle and put the pebbles in the bottle to keep it from tipping over. Then we turn the top upside down and place it back in the bottle like a funnel. We can use the marker to draw a scale on the side of the bottle so we can measure the rainwater. We could do this every day it rains, Papa, and compare which gets the most rain. That sounds simple enough. I'm pretty sure that we have all those materials. What about our nature walk, other than seeing how muddy we can get? What should we observe? Papa Bear asked. We can look at how the leaves on the trees collect raindrops, how the ground gets muddy, and even how the worms come out when it rains. Worms are fun. I think everything will look very different when it's wet, Bernice said with excitement coming into the kitchen, Mama Bear said as she shook off the rain from the bags. It's raining dinosaurs and Dragons out there. What have you two been planning? Papa taught me how to make lemons from lemonade or something like that. We are going to go outside, get super wet and do some fun science stuff. And then we will come in and make some super treats. Mama, doesn't that sound like fun? Ha ha, it sure does. Let's get our rain boots on and see how muddy we can get. It's that time, Papa, said Bernice. And what time is that, Little Bear? Hupa Bear replied. It's time to see who can yawn the most and maybe get a few papa hugs. Bernice said with a great big yawn. I think I will win the yawning competition. Papa Bear said with his own Papa Bear sized yawn. All that walking in the rain, jumping in the mud and doing science has made me tired. Your yawns certainly are the biggest in the whole wide world. Bernie said with yet another yawn. Did you have a good day today, Little Bear? We did lots of fun activities and even though it was raining, we still could do the things we liked. Yeah, I had lots of fun. I like going out in the rain. At least when I am wearing my rubber boots. And the science stuff was okay too. Mama was really funny. I don't think she likes getting as muddy as we do. She might not, but she's still got some mud on her nose. Papa Bear said with a laugh. I think I got some mud in my ears. I had to work extra hard in my bath tonight because there was mud all over me. But you know what was the most fun, Papa? What? Papa Bear asked. Making cookies, Papa. I think my cookies are almost as good as yours. If I keep practicing, I think they might be the best cookies ever. Bernice said with another great big yawn. I think I better close my eyes and go to sleep. My yawns are getting way too big. Are you comfy and warm? Yes, Papa. How about Twiggle, Wolfie and Madeline? Are they ready to go to sleep too? I think they are. And what about you, Cookie? Are you ready for a nap? Papa Bear asked yawning. Cookie opened her mouth and yawned too. Papa, cats can yawn too. We better say goodnight in a hurry. Give me a hug and a kiss. Papa Bear said trying hard not to yawn. I love you, Papa. I love you too, Little Bear and Cookie, Bernice and Papa Bear all yawned together. And that is the end of our story. Good night. Sleep tight, Sam.
