It is getting close to the end of the year, and Bernice realizes that the last time she thought the year was almost over must have just been a short break because now the teachers are giving them lots of tests of lots and projects. Bernice and her friends can barely wait until summer is here. Bernice's almost last day of school. Did you think the last math test was super hard? Wait, I don't even know why I'm asking. You and Bobby are like math geniuses or something, ethan said as he and Bernice bounced along on the school bus ride home. Bernice thought the test had been easy peasy, but she didn't really want to say that out loud. I think I did okay, she said. I spent a lot of time practicing the problems and stuff. I probably should have been reading more of those books you lent me from your grandma's house. But hard math problems are really fun. Did you read the one about the detective and the witch and the missing box of school documents? I don't want to spoil it. If you haven't read it yet, it's super fun. I haven't yet, but now I think I better. We're almost done school anyway. I thought we were done school a few weeks ago, ethan said. Bernice laughed. I think the teachers were just resting before giving us more work. That's what it felt like anyway. Have you decided what you're doing this summer yet? Ethan asked. I might go to a camp, but I'm not sure I want to. My parents said I might be allowed to ride my bike to Grandma's house and read there on rainy days, though I don't totally understand that plan because they also don't like me riding in the rain. So I think my summer plans haven't been fixed yet. I still haven't decided everything yet, bernice admitted. I might swim and do some running stuff, but maybe I should just leave some of summer empty and have fun, too. The only problem is that it's more fun to do stuff with friends and everybody seems busy. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I think this is our stop. After getting off the bus, Ethan and Bernice walked along the street toward Bernice's house and Ethan's grandmother's place. I am so thirsty. I feel like I am living in a desert, bernice said. It's super warm out. Yeah, I think it was gym class. It always makes me thirsty and I never seem to have enough water. Well, here's my house. See you later, Ethan. After a while, Crocodile Bernice grinned and then did four long broad jumps up the walkway to her small house. They had been practicing jumping in gym class for track and field, and Bernice had decided broad jumps made almost any walkway more fun. Then she climbed the front steps where pots full of pretty flowers sat beside the door. The moment she stepped inside, she could smell something yummy delicious coming from the kitchen. Papa and Cookie, I am home and something smells yummy. It makes me think I am living in a gingerbread house and not this one. Could it be true? Anything is possible when you have an imagination, papa Bear said with a laugh from the kitchen. I am super thirsty, Papa. Okay, I'll reach up to the high place and get you a glass. Bernice sat down to take off her sneakers. A moment later she heard the soft padding of Cookie's paws coming around the corner. Cookie stopped a little ways away first, as if checking to make sure Bernice wasn't covered in rain, snow, or even worse, running sweat. Hi, Cookie. Did you miss me today? I missed you and I was thinking about you during my math test and I think it helped a lot because it was super easy peasy, which I don't really say to my friends because they don't always think so, but I think I did really well. I bet you had fun today watching birds out the window. After Bernice finally got her sneakers off, Cookie came closer and curled up against her legs for the regular after school pets. Remember when I said school seemed almost over because we weren't really doing much and stuff? Well, I think I was wrong. I think the teachers were just resting. That's what Bobby thought anyway. And I think I agree. We had all kinds of work today, even in Art and the teachers kept telling us to finish our paintings quickly. But painting takes time. How can I create something beautiful super fast? Cookie purred. Bobby sort of paints fast, but mostly he just walks around pretending to be a famous artist with his hands behind his back. Then he goes back and paints an emoji or something funny. The teachers wouldn't let him do that today, though. Cookie purred louder. And in gym class we had to do these super, super hard broad jumps. I think you would find them easy because you're a cat and cats can jump everywhere. Bobby decided he was secretly a frog and started hopping across the whole gym until the teacher got upset and made him demonstrate the proper broad jump, like a hundred times. He almost fell asleep afterward. I bet he's sleeping right now. Or eating cookies. Could be either one. Really. Cookies stretched dramatically so Bernice would rub her belly. Almost as if hearing the word cookies had activated something. Bernice's stomach let out a loud gurgling sound. That startled Cookie a little. Oops, sorry, Cookie. I guess I'm hungrier than I thought. That wasn't thunder and stuff. I'm super thirsty too, because of gym class and the heat. So maybe we should stop talking for now so I can go get a snack. It's too bad you can't eat real cookies. You only get the yucky cat ones. I tried one once and it was kind of gross. But you like them and that's what matters. Because you are my bestest friend. Bernice stood up neatly, put her sneakers away, and hurried into the kitchen where a huge plate of cookies was waiting on the table. You look all sweaty today, papa Bear said, handing her a glass of water. I put a smidgen of lemon in it to make it taste fresher. Thank you, Papa. I feel like I just ran through a desert, bernice said before drinking the whole glass in one enormous gulp. You really are thirsty. I'll get you some milk too, for your cookies. And don't forget to wash your hands. Bernice quickly washed her hands and rushed back to the table. She didn't want to scare Cookie again with another tummy gurgle. One time her stomach had rumbled so so loudly that Cookie hid under a pillow for 20 minutes. What kind of cookies are these, Papa? Bernice asked after taking a bite. They taste super spicy, like Thai food or Mexican food or all the spicy stuff you and Mama love. Papa Bear laughed. They're ginger cookies. I may have added a bit too much ginger this time. We usually make them in the fall, but I was in the mood for them and thought you might like them. I don't like them, Papa. I super love them. But I might need more milk because my tongue is on fire and I don't want to turn into a dragon. I'll get you some more milk. Papa Bear said with a chuckle. Now tell me all about your day. I got a note from Bobby's mom saying he fell asleep while eating a cookie. She even sent a picture. Bernice laughed. I bet that was a funny picture. Yeah, Papa. We got kind of tired in gym today and even in other classes too, because of all of a sudden the teachers remembered we still had lots of stuff to finish before summer. So now everybody is going super fast. I don't mind math and science and stuff like that, but track today was hard. Bobby got sort of in trouble, but not really and had to demonstrate the broad jump a million times. I think it made him really tired, though. He still kept making jokes. Later, Bobby's mum said his legs were tired from hopping. That sounds right. Anything else exciting happen? I wouldn't call it exciting exactly. We had a math test and I think I did pretty well. There might still be more tests before summer, though. The teacher suddenly seems super serious. Even though it's sunny and warm outside, shouldn't people smile more when it's sunny? Maybe they should let us all go outside and do school under a tree or something. Papa Bear smiled. I bet your teachers would like to be outside too, Little Bear. But you still have important things to learn and it's their job to help you. Yeah, I know. Even though I'm pretty sure I already know most of the science and math stuff. There's probably still more to learn. And I'm kind of worried there might be a writing test in English. I'm not very good at that. Papa, I'm sure you'll do fine. You can do well at just about anything you put your mind to. Just have to keep practicing. Yeah, I just get worried sometimes. Everybody does, Little Bear. The more you try, the less scary things feel. But a little worry is normal. Maybe cookies help, Bernice said with a laugh. They definitely help with a lot of things. Not really. Anything else exciting happened today? Bernice continued. One of the kids brought spring rolls to share at lunch and they were super yummy. He even brought sweet sauce, which Bobby said he wanted to drink with a straw. Gertrude brought extra fruit and somebody else had tofu with red spots. Spicy stuff on it. I didn't try that one. Bobby did, though, and he pretended it wasn't spicy, but his face turned bright red. Papa Bear laughed softly. Do you have homework tonight? Not really. So I thought I might read one of Ethan's books. He seems super excited about it, so it must be good. And maybe I'll write a little bit too, just for practice. Hopefully Cookie helps me because I think I write better when she's nearby. Do you think I should hide her in my backpack in case there's an English test? Papa Bear laughed. That sounds like a good idea, but I'm not sure your principal would agree. Yeah, she's super strict. Almost as strict as that handwriting teacher. Papa Bear smiled as he stood up. Why don't you finish your milk while I get dinner started? Mama says we should have a big salad tonight, but I thought maybe I'd sneak some pizza in too. What do you think? Sounds yummy, Papa. I love pizza. And salad too, of course. After reading almost half of the book Ethan had lent her and practicing her writing with Cookie nearby, Bernice had a delicious dinner of salad and a little bit of pizza. Then, after playing a game with Mama and Papa, which Bernice won quite fairly, according to Bernice, she started her bedtime routine. She took a warm bubble bath with bubbles that smelled like lemons, brushed her teeth and all that important stuff, took some slow deep breaths, and laid out her favorite hoodie and jeans for the morning. Finally, she hopped into bed, arranged Twiggle, Wolfie, and Madeline just right, pulled the blanket up to her chin, and called out, it's that time, Papa, are you sure you don't want to go straight to sleep? Her papa asked. I am sure, Papa, but maybe a short one would be best because I am super tired, Bernice said after letting out a great big yawn. Papa Bear chuckled softly as he made his way up the stairs to her bedroom, trying not to shake the whole house. Did you do all the things you need to do before bed? Papa Bear asked. I think so. I had a soapy bath. I brushed my teeth and stuff. Are you comfy? Yes, Papa. How about Twiggle, Wolfy, and Madeline? Are they ready for sleep too? They said they are ready, though I think they are a bit tired too. Cookie will likely come up later after she has a snack with Mama. Papa Bear smiled. Alright then, give me a big hug and a kiss and I'll tell you a super short story. I love you, Papa. I love you too, Little Bear. Once upon a time, in a world full of magic and fun, there lived all manner of creatures in the mystical forest. Unicorns, fairies, dragons, bears, and of course, gnomes. Two of these gnomes were named Pip and Moss. Pip loved books, lists, and knowing the answers to things. Moss loved climbing trees, jumping in puddles, and being outside in general. On this particular afternoon, they were sitting in the library of the mystical Forest Academy, which had enormous windows that looked out over the most beautiful garden you had ever seen. This was a problem. Okay, pip said, opening his notebook. The test is Friday. We should go through chapter seven first. Moss was not looking at chapter seven. Moss was looking out the window. There's a butterfly out there, moss said. A butterfly? Big one. Blue and gold. Moss. It's enormous, Pip. It's practically a bird. Moss, Chapter seven. Moss looked at his book. He read one sentence, then he looked back out the window. The butterfly was gone, but now a family of hedgehogs was waddling through the garden, which was somehow even more interesting. The hedgehogs are back, moss said. Pip put down his pencil. I know, he said quietly. Moss looked at him. You can see them, too? I've been watching them for the last five minutes. Instead of reading, Pip admitted, the little one keeps bumping into the others. They both stared out the window in silence. Outside, the garden was spectacular. The roses were in full bloom, pink and red and a shade of orange that almost glowed. The grass was so green it looked painted. Somewhere out there, bees were buzzing and the warm breeze was carrying the smell of honeysuckle through a crack in the window. I can smell it from here, moss said miserably. Me too, said Pip. We should take a break, moss said. Just five minutes. Fresh air helps your brain work better. I read that somewhere. You read something? Pip asked. I read things sometimes, moss said, offended. They walked out into the garden and immediately felt better. The sun was warm on their faces, the grass soft under their feet. Moss did a small cartwheel for no reason in particular. That was unnecessary, Pip said. It was very necessary, moss said. They walked the whole garden path once slowly, not talking much. The roses smelled incredible. The little hedgehog family was still there, the smallest one now sitting in the middle of the path, looking confused. Same, Moss told the smallest one. After five minutes, Pip stopped walking. Ok, said. We have to go back. Moss groaned. I know, pip said. But the test is Friday. What if we studied out here? Pip considered this. The pages would blow around. What if we held them down with rocks? Pip picked up his book and headed back toward the library door. Moss followed, dragging his feet only a little. They sat back down at their table by the big window. Outside, the garden kept being beautiful. The hedgehogs waddled away into the bushes. Moss opened chapter seven. This better be worth it, he said. It will be, pip said. Then, after a moment, probably, And with the sound of Bernice's snorty snorts, Papa Bear stopped the story and gave Bernice a kiss on her forehead, adjusted her blanket, turned off the lamp, and quietly whispered, I love you, Little Bear. And that is the end of our story. Good night. Sleep tight,
