Hello friends and welcome to Sleep Tight Stories. This story is about a young boy named Jackie who just doesn't like to go to sleep. He likes everything about bedtime except the sleeping part. One night his mom gets him to try something new. Maybe this will help. Jackie and the Purple Sheep There is that sound again, telling me that it was time for bed. And to think that I thought that that orange ball that mom bought me to listen to music and podcasts was just for fun. I don't like reminders. It's not that I don't like bedtime. I like taking a bath because I can play with my boats and submarines and watch my dinosaurs ride on top of them. I like wearing my comfy pajamas because they have dinosaurs on them. Brushing my teeth is okay though. I am waiting for pizza flavored toothpaste to be available. Or maybe hot dog flavored Bedtime stories are fun because I can use my imagination. No, bedtime was often fun, but what I really didn't like about it was that I had to go to sleep. Sleep always interferes with all the things I want to do. Jackie, where are you? It's time to get under the covers and sleep. Where are you hiding this time? Jackie's mom said as she looked under the bed. Jackie's mom scanned his bedroom looking to see if he was in his usual hiding places. Come on Jackie, you know how important sleep is. It's like a gift. You lay down tired and magically your body heals itself and in the morning you wake up refreshed, said Jackie's mom. Except for moms who need coffee in the morning after playing hide and seek with our young boys who don't want to get into bed, she thought. He isn't under the bed or in his closet or behind the door. She sighed. Oh, where is Jackie tonight? Then she noticed some movement in the corner. I must be sleepy if I didn't see this immediately. She thought Jackie was pretending to be a lamp by wearing his lampshade on his head. Jackie's mom walked over and said, OK Mr. Lamp, it's time to get under the covers for sleep. Oh Mommy. Jackie said as he walked over to his bed and got under the covers. Mommy, I think I need a glass of water before I can sleep. There is already a glass of water on your bedside table. Jackie's mom gave him a kiss on the forehead as she left the room. Go to sleep. She said. Mommy. Jackie yelled. Yes Jackie? His mother asked as she walked into his bedroom. Can you turn on my night light? It's too dark in here for me to sleep. Okay Jackie, now close your eyes and go to sleep. She said as she turned on the light and walked out of his room. Okay mommy, I will. A short time later, Jackie yelled, mommy. Mommy. Yes Jackie? What's wrong this time? Jackie's mom said walking quickly into his room, starting to get a bit frustrated. I'm scared I might be cold in the night. Can you get me another blanket? Jackie asked. There is an extra blanket at the end of your bed already. Now it's time to sleep. Okay mummy, I'll try. Jackie sighed. Ten minutes later, Jackie's mom was down in the kitchen preparing his snack and lunch for the next day when she heard him yell, mommy. Mommy. Mommy. Walking into his room, she said, jackie, you really need to go to sleep and Mummy needs To go to sleep too. I'm sorry, Mummy, but I just can't seem to relax and go to sleep. Did you try your deep breaths? Yes, Mummy. And I'm listening to the stories too. I think maybe I have a hyperactive imagination tonight and I can't stop thinking about dragons and unicorns and dinosaurs and stuff. Jackie's mom sighed. Okay, let's try something new. Something I used to do when I was just a bit older than you. You will have to use that imagination of yours though. Is that okay? She asked. I'll try my very, very best. Okay. I want you to imagine a beautiful green field full of sheep. All these sheep have been eating grass on one side of the field only. And now the side of the field they are on has less grass than the other side. One by one they are going to jump the fence to get to the other side of the fence so they can eat that grass. And we are going to count them as they go. Can it be dinosaurs instead of sheep? No, it can't be dinosaurs. Only sheep. What color are the sheep? You can make them any color you want them to be. My favorite color is beige. Mmm. I think beige is boring. My sheep are going to be all the colors of a rainbow. That's good, Jackie. Now, are you ready to get started? Yes, I am, mommy. Close your eyes and count with me. Jackie's mom said in a softer voice. One sheep. That sheep jumped super high, mummy. Two sheep. That sheep that just jumped had pink wool. Shh. Just count in your head. Three sheep. Four sheep. Five sheep. Six sheep. Seven sheep. Eight sheep. Nine sheep. What's wrong with number ten? Jackie thought. Why isn't he going to jump over the fence? Jackie looked at the purple colored number 10 for a moment and decided to walk over and see what the matter was. Sheep number 10, don't you know you are holding up all the sheep behind you and not letting me go to sleep? Don't you want to jump over the fence and eat some of the long grass on the other side? I can help you if you want. I don't need your help, said number 10. You can talk? Asked Jackie, amazed. Of course I can talk, silly. All sheep can talk. You just have to really listen. If you don't really listen to what we are saying, then all you hear is baa baa baa. Said the purple colored sheep. I didn't know that and I'm not always very good at listening. My teachers often remind me to listen in class, but I guess I get easily distracted. You are the first Sheep I have met. We don't have any sheep in my neighborhood that I know of. My name is Jackie. What is yours? You can call me number 10. Nice to meet you, number 10. So why won't you jump over the fence? I'm tired of jumping over the fence. Every day and night it's the same thing. Eat grass and jump over the fence. Sometimes there is music and sometimes there is not. But it's always the same thing. Day after day. I want to experience something different. Oh, I think I can understand. Sometimes I get bored with stuff. But what happens if you don't jump? I don't know. I've never not jumped. In fact, my parents have always jumped. My grandparents have always jumped and I think that's all we have ever done. I have heard that some sheep in the other pasture have jumped over clouds. But that's it. My mom says it's our purpose in life. But I think I want to try something else. Maybe I can be like the cows and jump over the moon. Then at least I could see outer space and be like an astronaut, number 10 said, looking up towards the sky. Yeah, I used to dream of being an astronaut until I discovered dinosaurs. And now I think I want to be a paleontologer or something like that. Whenever my mom cooks chicken for dinner, I always hide the bones in my room so I can excavate them. Sometimes I forget where I hide them and it starts to get stinky and then my mom gets angry. Something about bugs or something. But I like bugs. I like bugs too, except for flies. They always seem to like to tease, said number 10. Why don't you go to the cow pasture and see if they will let you join them? And could I come with you? The only cows that I have seen recently are the pictures in the grocery store. That's a good idea. And you are welcome to come with me. But won't you be tired? No, I didn't really want to go to sleep anyways. Is it very far to go? Because I left my rubber boots at the front door of our house. Actually, I don't know because I have never been outside of this meadow. We could walk over to the trees over there and see what is on the other side. As Jackie walked across the meadow with sheep number 10, he didn't really know what to say. He had lots of questions to ask his new purple friend, like do they only eat grass? And had he ever tasted hot dogs, pizza or ice cream? Because he was amazed at seeing so many sheep in the field talking. Do all of these sheep get to jump over the fence? Jackie asked. Well, it depends on who is counting. Sometimes they do. I mean there are a hundred of us in the field, but often they just get to stand around and chat. Do they get upset that they don't get to go over to the other side of the fence? Asked Jackie as they got closer to the edge of the field. The sheep at the back of the line are older and the and like to take more rests so it's okay for them. Here we are at the edge of the field, said number 10 as they both looked at what was beyond the field of sheep. I can't believe what I'm seeing, said Jackie as he stared at a field of cows jumping from the ground high high up into the night sky over a bright yellow half moon. This must be the place, said number 10. Are you sure you can jump as high as them? The moon is much higher than the top of a fence, said Jackie. I won't know if I can until I try. Look over there. Jackie pointed. There is a smaller cow standing all alone. Maybe you can ask if you can switch and try. That's a good idea, said number 10. Yeah, I have lots of ideas. After they walked over, number 10 said, hi there, my name is number 10 and this is my friend Jackie. What is your name? My name is Bessie, she said, surprised as they don't get many visitors to the field. Why are you here? Shouldn't you be jumping over fences? That's what I thought, said Jackie. Well, I'm bored of jumping over fences. I think I would like to try something new. If you don't mind me asking. Why are you just standing here? Jumping over the moon used to be lots of fun when it was just to make people laugh. But lately many people have forgotten the nursery rhyme and just have us jumping over the moon as they fall asleep. Most cows are okay with this, but I too would like to try something different. I have an idea. Why don't you both switch for a while? Bessie could jump over the fence and number 10. You could jump over the moon, said Jackie. Hmm, I guess we could. You better hurry though. My turn is just about to come up. Bessie said, not wasting any time. Number 10 ran over and got in line behind cow number nine and seemingly like magic, jumped high up in the sky and over the top of the moon with a great big smile on his face. Yay. You are an astronaut now. Number 10. Yelled Jackie. Before Bessie left to join the sheep, Jackie asked, do you know if there is a field of dinosaurs? Time to get up, sleepyhead. You need to get ready for school and eat your breakfast. Jackie's mom said as she shook him in bed. Mommy, guess what? What? I think going to sleep is awesome. Oh yeah? Why is that? Because I get to talk to sheep, cows and dinosaurs. I'm happy to hear that. Let's get you dressed and have some breakfast. Jackie's mom said with a sigh of relief as she listened to Jackie talk about the talking sheep who became an astronaut. And that is the end of our story. Good night, Sleep tight.
