Now on to our story. Bernice is determined to listen to a longer story from Papa Bear, so she gets into the tub a little earlier for a bubble bath. She is tired and sore after a busy day of swimming, gym and tests. After she is in bed, she calls Papa and asks for a longer story and Papa wonders if she will be able to stay awake long enough. Papa Bear finishes a bedtime story Hi Cookie, I'm just about to have a bubble bath because I really need one tonight, I think, bernice said, stretching her tired arms before she tested the temperature of the water. Usually I try to be quick, but tonight I need some self care. That's what Mama calls it, anyway. I'm not exactly sure what it means, because aren't we always supposed to look after ourselves? But today was super hard. Not only did I have swimming practice, I also had gym and a whole bunch of tests. My brain and my body are sore, so bubbles it is. Cookie meowed and leapt onto the edge of the tub, sniffing the water with interest. Be careful, Cookie. Remember the last time you slipped in? You were not very happy. Bernice giggled at the memory. You ran so fast you made me look slow when I run. I mean, you can join me if you want, but I don't think you'd like it. My friend at school has a cat and she says they give their cat baths all the time, so we could try if you like. Cookie let out a firm meow and promptly walked over to the other side of the bathroom, curling up on top of Bernice's cushy towel that she had left on the floor. Sitting in the tub, Bernice, Bernice sighed. Did you hear Mama talking to Papa and me at dinner? She says we're eating too many treats and wants us to have more vegetables. She's right, I guess. But can having one Cookie a day really be that bad? I mean, it's fun, right? But Papa agreed with Mama. He told me that she's very smart and she loves us and just wants us to be healthy. So I guess we'll have different treats after school sometimes. From the hallway, Papa Bear called out in his deep voice, don't spend too much time in the bath, Little Bear, or you'll shrivel up like a raisin or a prune. I might have to pump you back up with an air pump. Bernice laughed. Okay, Papa, but I'm not a balloon. She sank a little deeper into the warm water, letting out a contented sigh. I guess I can't soak in the tub as long as I had hoped. Cookie, do you like the smell of this bubble bath? It's Mama's, and it smells like coconut. Coconut is delicious, but it says on the bottle not to drink it. Why do they make soap that smells like food? I think that's kind of funny. After a short soak to soothe her muscles, Bernice finished the rest of her bedtime routine. She had started a bit early tonight because she had a plan. Lately she had been so tired that she fell asleep almost as soon as Papa Bear started telling the story. But this time she was prepared. After tucking Twiggle, Wolfie, and Madeline under the covers in their usual spots. She climbed into bed and pulled up the blankets. Papa, it's that time again. She called, ready and determined to stay awake for a long bedtime story. Bernice could hear his huge steps walking up the stairs. What time is that, Little Bear? Is it time for the yawning Olympics? Papa Bear called out in his deep rumbling voice. It's time for a bedtime story, of course. Bernice grinned just as Papa Bear stepped into her room. But I might yawn too. Yeah, I think I'll be doing some yawning too. Papa Bear said as he sat on the edge of her bed. I had a hard day today, Papa. I think you're getting too big for my bed. Bernice said, wrinkling her nose. Every time you sit on it, it creaks and groans. Maybe that's the bed's way of saying it wants to hear a story too. Papa Bear chuckled. Did you have a good bath? Yeah, Papa, I had a super hard day and sometimes you just need to soak in the tub. Especially after swimming practice. Our coach is pushing us really hard and everyone has sore muscles. Well, I guess not everyone. Some of my teammates are really super good at swimming. But I'm sore. A hot bath can be very relaxing up, a Bear agreed. Your mama takes them when she runs a lot. It helps her muscles feel better. And I think she likes to spend some time surrounded by hot water from time to time. It helps your mind relax too, Papa, especially when you have as many tests as I did today. Well, tomorrow is a new day full of fresh challenges and I think it'll be great. But will it have cookies, Papa? Bernice asked with a mischievous grin. Hmm. How about carrot cookies? Or maybe spinach cookies? Um, I guess we could try. Bernice said hesitantly. Papa Bear laughed. Mama says you wanted a long story tonight. Are you sure you can stay awake for the whole thing? Yes, Papa, Bernice said confidently, then let out a great big yawn. I think so. Did you do all the things you need to do before bed? Papa Bear asked. I did, Papa. I even used Mama's coconut bubble bath tonight, which is kinda strange because it smells like food. Papa Bear chuckled. Well, as long as you didn't try drinking it. Of course not, Papa. Are you comfy? Yes, Papa. How about Twiggle, Wolfy and Madeline? Are they ready for a story too? They said they're ready. And what about you, Cookie? Papa Bear asked, glancing down at the little cat curled up at the foot of the bed. Cookie blinked sleepily stretched and then closed her eyes again. Seems like she might be ready too. Papa Bear said with a chuckle. All right, give me a hug and a kiss and I'll tell you a story. Thank you, Papa, Bernice murmured sleepily, wrapping her arms around his neck and giving him a big squeeze. Once upon a time, in a world full of magic and fun, there lived a brave little bear named Booboo. She lived in a large castle at the edge of a mystical forest, and in this forest there were unicorns, fairies, gnomes, and all manner of insects, birds, and animals. It was a wonderful place. Her best friend was a young dragon called Kai Kai, and they liked to play as much as they could. The kingdom they lived in was full of people who lived in the meadows, the hills, and those who lived in the forest, and they all lived in harmony. On this particular day, Booboo and Kai Kai were meeting in the castle garden before heading to Bixie's class in the forest. Bixie was a wise old gnome who used to teach at Booboo's academy, but now lived in a cozy cabin in the mystical forest. He often held small classes in a clearing nearby. Booboo and Kai Kai hadn't seen Bixie for a while. There had been too many tests and assessments lately, and whenever they did have a break, Kai Kai always preferred a trip to various treat shops over even more studying. After all, who wouldn't prefer to eat chocolate from a magical tree at the base of a snowy mountain? As Booboo emerged from the castle doorway, Kai Kai let out a laugh and a snort. Did I wake you? You're never late. Are you sick? Because if you are, you should rest and have my favorite remedy, Dragon's Chocolate Elixir. Booboo yawned and rubbed her eyes. Of course your medicine has chocolate in it, she said, stifling another yawn. I'm not sick, but when I got home from the Academy, I was so tired that I needed a nap. I almost forgot to wake up. It's been so busy lately, and I even started running again. I have to beat my older brother this year or he'll tease me endlessly. Kai Kai snorted again, sending a small puff of smoke into the air. Oh yeah, it's assessment season at the Academy, isn't it? We have tests all the time at my school. In fact, I just scored a perfect 100 on my start a Campfire with a Whisper Breath test. Congratulations. I'm proud of you. Booboo said with a grin. Any progress on your stomach's thunderous growls when you get hungry? Nope. That's my unique characteristic. Kai Kai laughed. So did you want to fly to Bixie? Since you are so tired I think I can zip us right down into the clearing. Lets walk. Booboo said. I know it's a bit of a hike, but after all the treats we've been eating I think I need the exercise. Besides, it's a beautiful afternoon and we haven't walked through the flower lined path in ages. We always take the fast way. The meadow outside the castle was full of color even in the off season. Flowers of every kind swayed gently in the breeze. Insects buzzed happily between the blossoms and a few playful pixies flitted about, sprinkling magic dust that made the fields shimmer in the sunlight. Booboo and Kai Kai started walking, being careful to not disturb anything in the garden. The gardener took great care of all the grounds around the castle, and since Kai Kai started being more mindful of all of his hard work, they became good friends. Which also meant more baked treats for Ki Ki, which he loved because he had the appetite of a dragon. As they walked through the meadow, Kai Kai flicked his tail and asked, so what are we learning at Bixies today? I didn't think we were starting new lessons so soon. Will the others be there? Bluebell or any of the unicorns? I think the unicorns are still away for the season. Booboo said, admiring a pair of pixies zipping between the flowers. They should be back when the sun is higher in the sky. As for who else will be there, I'm not sure. Bixie just said to come when we could. But he did say he was opening his trunk of treasures and giving us a gift. Kai Kai's eyes widened. Ooo, do you think it's something to eat? His stomach rumbled like distant thunder. Boo Boo laughed. No Kai Kai. You know his treasure chest is full of books. Books are the greatest treasure of all. Kai Kai sighed dramatically. Yeah, books and chocolate cakes. He muttered as they reached the flower lined path leading into the forest. Watch your head Boo Boo. Some of these branches are low. Looks like fewer people have been traveling the old trail lately. It's not as clear as it used to be. Thank you Kai Kai. Ubu said, ducking under a vine. But remember, I'm much shorter than you. Those branches don't reach me. Let's try not to get lost or Bixie will make us study forest maps again. Don't worry, I have the best sense of direction imaginable. Kai Kai declared proudly after getting lost three times. Booboo and Kai Kai finally arrived at the clearing near Bixie's cabin, panting slightly. I think I should lead next time, booboo said wearily. Kai Ki huffed. I swear, someone must have played tricks on the path. I definitely have the best sense of direction imaginable. Booboo chuckled. Well, there's the clearing up ahead and I see Bixie waiting for us. The old gnome stood beside his trunk of books, arms folded, an amused smile on his face. Ah, good afternoon. You both look like you've been on quite the journey. You didn't get lost, did you? Perhaps we should go over the maps again. No, no. We just took the scenic route. Kai Kai said quickly. We needed the exercise. Booboo said she wanted to walk more since she's been eating a lot of chocolate lately. Booboo crossed her arms. I seem to remember it was your idea to visit the chocolate tree at the base of the snowy mountain. Bixie laughed. You two have certainly become the best of friends. But today I've called you here for something different. At the end of each study cycle, I believe it's important to set aside study books and open your minds to other kinds of adventures. Kai Kai wrinkled his snout. But Bixie, I've been reading study books constantly. Can't I just spend my time flying to different treat shops and having fun? Bixie chuckled. Haha. Kai Kai, you do have the best appetite. Yes, of course you can do that. But books aren't just for studying. They open doors to places you could never imagine. To adventures waiting just beyond the pages. Reading is a joy too. He lifted a book from the trunk. I've chosen a few for both of you. One in particular that I think you'll like. Kai Kai. It's about a young dragon, not much older than yourself, who gets lost in the desert kingdom far south of here. He discovers a magical oasis with a rejuvenating fountain and trees that grow vanilla. Chocolate Kai Kai's tale flicked with interest. Now that is my kind of adventure. Bixie smiled. You both look like you could use a rest. Why don't we go to my cabin for some tea? And if we're lucky, I might even have a few sweet biscuits to go with it. As they followed Bixie toward his cozy cabin, the scent of spiced tea and honey biscuits drifted through the air. Booboo sighed contentedly while Kai Kai's stomach gave another loud growl, scaring some of the nearby birds. He grinned. Maybe books and biscuits are the greatest treasure after all. Bixie chuckled. Now that's a lesson worth learning. And with that, they took a seat outside his kitchen window, ready for a different kind of adventure. And with that, Papa Bear tucked in Bernice's blankets, kissed her forehead and turned off the light. I love you, little bear, he whispered before tiptoeing out of her room. And that is the end of our story. Good night. Sleep tight.
