This story is based on an old Finnish folk tale, but in ours it takes place in the forests of Ontario, Canada, on a warm day in July. It's about Bruno the Bear, who's tired of being called clumsy by all the other forest animals. But when he spots a ptarmigan in the woods, Bruno gets a chance to prove he can do something right. Will Bruno finally get the recognition he's hoping for? Let's find out. Bruno and the Brilliant Catch Bruno the Bear lumbered through the summer forest, clumsy as ever, his big paws snapping twigs and and rustling every bush in sight. It was one of those warm July mornings that smelled like fresh pine and wild bergamot. Or maybe just Bruno himself. Crunch. Crunch. Crash. Bruno's foot caught on something and down he went like a sack of potatoes. He lay there for a moment, feeling face in the moss.

Every time, he muttered, spitting out a pinecone, a voice called from above, Bruno's at it again. Chirped the squirrel. All paws and no grace, that one. Bruno groaned and sat up, brushing pine needles from his thick black fur. His ears drooped slightly. It didn't matter where he went, someone always had something to say about his clumsiness. The raccoons at the creek called him Bumbling Bruno. The chipmunks had nicknamed him Two Left Paws. Even the beaver family, who were usually polite to a fault, would exchange not so subtle glances whenever he showed up near their pond. Just once, Bruno grumbled, I'd like to get through a day without falling over a stick or a pine cone or my own shadow. He wasn't really expecting the forest to cooperate, but as he lumbered forward, something rustled in the underbrush ahead. Bruno froze mid step, one paw dangling in the air, there pecking at some seeds, near a fallen log was a plump ptarmigan, its brown summer feathers perfectly camouflaged against the forest floor. Bruno's ears perked. His heart thumped like a bass drum. Don't mess this up, he thought, trying to steady his breathing. No flailing, no sneezing, no tripping. Just move. He lifted one paw, paused, Shifted it back. Nope, too noisy. Forward again. Better. For once, his big, clumsy paws weren't getting in the way. He almost tripped in surprise. He crept forward, barely breathing, placing each foot with surprising grace. The ptarmigan continued pecking, completely unaware of the large black bear approaching. Almost there. Just a little closer. With a swift, gentle movement that surprised even himself, Bruno scooped up the bird in his massive paws. The ptarmigan squawked once in surprise, but was completely unharmed. Bruno blinked. Uh, I actually caught something. Bruno whispered in amazement, carefully transferring the bird to his mouth. I. Bruno. The bear caught a real live ptarmigan. He could already hear the forest animals gasping in amazement. The chipmunks would faint into their burrows, even though smug beavers might raise an eyebrow. Bruno stood up straighter than he had in weeks. This was it. His moment to shine. Where should I go first? He wondered. The beaver pond? No, too obvious. I should take the long trail, Let word spread naturally, make an entrance. With the ptarmigan held gently but very visibly in his teeth, Bruno set off down the main forest path. He tried to walk with the casual confidence of someone who caught birds all the time, though in truth, his legs were stiff with effort. He held his head high. His steps were deliberate. He imagined squirrels applauding from branches. He passed the old oak where the woodpeckers usually gathered, empty. He strutted by the berry bushes where the raccoons often gossiped, not a snout in sight. Even the chipmunk's log was still, still. Where is everyone? Bruno mumbled. Around the ptarmigan was what actually came out. The forest, usually buzzing with activity, had gone quiet. His triumphant parade was turning into a solo march, with no one to witness the spectacle. Of course, he thought, the one time I do something impressive, everyone disappears to do laundry or nap or whatever forest animals do when they're not admiring me. He kept walking, nose up, trying to look unfazed. Then a rustle in the leaves behind him. Bruno's heart leaped. Finally, someone to see. He straightened immediately and slowed his pace, aiming for a confident, effortless strut. It looked more like he was trying not to trip over his own knees. A smooth voice called out, well, well, if it isn't Bruno. The Bear out for his morning constitutional. Bruno nearly tripped again. It was Rusty the fox. Clever, smooth talking, and very hard to impress. Definitely the kind of animal who'd make a great audience. Bruno tried to turn casually, hoping Rusty would get a good look at the ptarmigan. Instead, he did an awkward sideways shuffle, almost dropping the bird. But Rusty didn't even seem to notice. Instead, he lifted his nose high into the air and gave a series of dramatic sniffs.

Hmm.

You smell that? Something shifting in the breeze today. Bruno blinked. The breeze? Seriously? Rusty continued tail swishing. Feels like it's coming from the south. That warm, humid sort of air. Storm's probably brewing. You know how it is. Bruno grunted meaningfully. Oh, hello there. Rusty said, feigning surprise. Didn't see you with your, uh, full mouth. Tell me, what direction do you think the wind's coming from? I say south. No, wait. Maybe southwest. Hard to say. The way those leaves are twitching. Could be a shift. Bruno's eyes bulged. Look at the ptarmigan, Rusty.
Rusty the Fox
Come on.
Narrator
He tried again.
Rusty the Fox
Mm hmm.
Narrator
Rusty squinted at the sky, ignoring him completely. Then again, the ferns over there are leaning eastward. Maybe the wind's swirling. You ever notice how unpredictable forest weather is? I could write a whole book about it. Bruno's jaw clenched. His greatest achievement was slowly slipping through his teeth. And this fox was giving a lecture on humidity.
Rusty the Fox
Mm, mm.
Narrator
Bruno tried again, jerking his head toward the bird.
Rusty the Fox
South, you say?
Narrator
Rusty nodded thoughtfully. Could be. But hold on. The scent on those pine needles. Now that's interesting. Might actually be a north wind. That was it. North. Bruno roared, flinging his mouth open in frustration. And in that exact moment, the ptarmigan burst free, flapping wildly into the trees with a joyful flutter of wings. Bruno froze, his mouth hanging open in horror. Rusty's ears twitched. Well, he said cheerfully, there it goes. You made me lose it. Bruno shouted. I had it. Rusty smiled, eyes twinkling. If I'd caught that bird and you asked me about the wind, I wouldn't have said north. Bruno growled. Oh, really? What would you have said? Rusty grinned, flashed his teeth and answered, east. And that is the end of our story. Good night. Sleep tight.
