Red is so tired after her morning adventures that she decides to lay down for a short nap, but falls deep asleep. While she is sleeping, Blue comes in and sneaks around looking for that glowing thing that he had seen in her room the other night. He has no idea what it is, and when Red wakes and hears Dr. Hart talking, she knows she will need to explain The Transfer Student Volume 2 Part 11 Blue, what have you done? Red scrambled off her bed, her heart hammering as she stared at her little brother holding the charm like it was a toy he'd found in a cereal box. I didn't break it. Blue protested, holding the device protectively against his chest. I was just looking. And then this lady started talking about migration, windows and Martian archives and Give it back now. Red lunged for the charm, but Blue was quicker, dancing backward toward her desk. Not until you tell me what's going on. Blue's eyes were bright with excitement rather than fear, which somehow made everything worse. Red, that was actual alien technology. Do you know how cool that is? It's not cool. It's dangerous. Red hissed, glancing toward her bedroom door. And keep your voice down. Do you want mom to hear us talking about aliens? Blue's face scrunched up in confusion. But we're aliens. We're from Mars. Why is it dangerous for us to have alien stuff? Red opened her mouth to explain, then realized she had no idea where to start. How could she tell Blue about corrupt aid agents and corporate exploitation and the difference between peaceful integration and oh no, blue said suddenly, his expression shifting from excitement to understanding. This is about those weird people who came to our kitchen that time, isn't it? The really big lady and the guy with the creepy smile. You remember Misty and Shade? Remember them, Red? They were terrifying the lady looked like she could bench press our entire house. And the guy never stopped smiling, even when mom spilled tea on his shoes. But if they gave you alien technology, does that mean they're the good guys or the bad guys? Despite everything, Red almost smiled. Trust Blue to reduce a complex interplanetary conspiracy to a simple good guys versus bad guys scenario. It's complicated, she said, sinking onto her bed. And that wasn't my technology. I found it. Found it where? And why does some old Earth lady know about Martian migration? Windows? Blue sat down in her desk chair, still clutching the charm. I mean, Earth people aren't supposed to know about any of that stuff, right? Mom is always telling us to keep quiet about Mars and that the relocation program is super secret. So how does this random Earth scientist lady know about migration timing and archives and all that? His voice dropped to a whisper. Red, what have you gotten yourself into? That's what I'm trying to figure out, red admitted. But Blue, you cannot tell mom about this. Promise me. Blue tilted his head, considering. I'll promise if you tell me everything. Red groaned. She should have known this was how he'd play it. Fine. But you have to swear on your circuit board collection that you won't tell Mom. Deal, blue said immediately, then paused. But actually, before you start explaining, I think I might know more about this than you think. Red looked up sharply. What do you mean? Remember that weird kid I mentioned? Lyo? Blue's voice took on the tone he used when he was trying to prove he was smarter than everyone thought. Well, he's been showing me things. Symbols and stuff. What kind of symbols? Blue set the charm carefully on Red's desk and pulled out his phone. I took pictures because I thought they were cool. Look at this. He swiped through his photos until he found what he was looking for. Red leaned in and immediately felt her stomach drop. The image showed symbols carved into what looked like a tree trunk. Symbols that were unmistakably Martian, including the same circle within circle design that Dr. Hart had mentioned. Blue, where did you take this? At the park. Lio said he found them on this old tree near the playground. But here's the weird part. When I asked him how he knew what they meant, he just smiled and said, some things are older than they appear. Blue made air quotes around the phrase, who talks like that? He's like 10 years old. Red studied the photo more carefully. The symbols weren't just random markings. They formed a coherent message in ancient Martian script. Something about Safe harbor and the old ways. There's more, Blue continued swiping to another photo. He showed me this, too. The next image made Red's breath catch. It was a drawing, crude, like something a kid might sketch, but it clearly showed the same type of facility she'd discovered that morning, complete with the sloping corridors and multiple levels. Blue, did you tell Lio anything about us? About where we're really from? Of course not. I'm not stupid. But I think he already knows. The way he looks at me sometimes, it's like he's waiting for me to figure something out. Red felt a chill run down her spine. If there was another Martian child in their area, someone Blue's age, who was apparently much more connected to the old sites than she'd realized, then the situation was far more complicated than she'd thought. Blue, she said slowly. I think we need to find Lio. Red? Blue. Their mother's voice echoed up the stairs. I. I need you two to come try something. Red and Blue froze, staring at each other with wide eyes. Red quickly snatched the charm from her desk and shoved it back into the lamp while Blue frantically closed his phone. Coming, Mom, Red called back, trying to sound normal. They hurried downstairs to find their mother standing in the kitchen, holding a wooden spoon and looking frustrated. On the counter sat what appeared to be some kind of Earth dessert that had gone horribly wrong. Lumpy, slightly smoking, and an alarming shade of green. I'm trying to make something called mint chocolate chip cookies, she explained, gesturing helplessly at the disaster. The recipe seemed simple enough, but I think I may have misunderstood the measurements. Blue stared at the smoking green lumps. Mom, did you use actual mint leaves? The recipe called for mint, she said defensively. So I picked some from the garden. Red exchanged a look with Blue. Their mother's ongoing battle with Earth cooking was becoming legendary. Back on Mars, all food had been precisely formulated and prepared by automated systems. Earth's chaotic approach to cooking, with its imprecise measurements and organic ingredients, baffled her completely. She did manage to make Red's favorite honey cakes. Well, maybe we could order pizza, red suggested diplomatically. Again, their mother sighed. I was hoping to master at least one Earth recipe. The cookies look interesting, blue offered, though he made no move to actually try one. Their mother laughed, finally seeing the humor in the situation. Perhaps we should stick to sandwiches for now. As they helped clean up the kitchen disaster, Red caught Blue making exaggerated faces behind their mother's back, pretending the cookie smoke was poisonous gas. Despite everything weighing on her mind, she had to bite her lip to keep from laughing. For a moment, everything felt wonderfully, completely normal. Once they'd helped their mother dispose of the smoking cookie disaster and assured her that sandwiches were perfectly acceptable for dinner, Red and Blue retreated back to Red's room. Red locked the door this time and pulled the charm from its hiding place in the lamp. Okay, she said, settling cross legged on her bed. Show me everything Lio told you and I'll tell you what I know. Blue pulled up his photos again, but this time he also grabbed Red's notebook and started sketching. So, Lio said, these symbols mark safe places for travelers. But the weird thing is he drew this diagram of underground tunnels that looks exactly like what the hologram lady was talking about. Red studied Blue's sketch. Blue, this isn't just any underground facility. Look at these proportions, these angles. This is definitely Martian architecture. That's what I thought. But how would a 10 year old earth kid know about Martian building techniques? Unless he's not an Earth kid, Red said slowly. Blue, I think Lio might be like us. She pulled out Dr. Hart's tablet, which she'd retrieved from under her mattress. Blue's eyes went wide as the device activated at her touch. Is that actual Martian tech? He breathed. Old Martian tech. Really old. Red navigated through the files to Dr. Hart had collected. Look at this. She documented dozens of these facilities. And look at this map. Blue leaned in, his technical mind immediately grasping the complex display grid section 7 Alpha. That's not just a random code, that's a coordinate system. See how it correlates with these geographical markers? Red blinked in surprise. How did you figure that out so fast? I've been studying Earth mapping systems in computer class, Blue said with a shrug. Plus, Lio showed me how some of the old symbols translate to modern coordinates. He said his older brother taught him. His older brother? Red felt another chill. How many Martian families were secretly living in their area? Blue was already pulling up Earth mapping software on his phone, cross referencing Dr. Hart's coordinates with local geography. Red, look at this. Grid section 7 Alpha corresponds to the old quarry outside town. The one that's been abandoned for like, ever. Red stared at the location on Blue's screen. It was less than an hour's bike ride from their house, hidden in a patch of forest that most people avoided because of the unstable ground around the old mining operations. Blue, she said quietly. I think we found where Dr. Hart hid the Martian archive. So when do we go check it out? Blue asked, his eyes bright with anticipation. Whoa, hold on stinky head, Red said, holding up her hands. There is no we going to check anything out. This is dangerous, Blue. There are people looking for these sights who definitely don't have good intentions. Blue's expression immediately shifted from excitement to determination, the same stubborn look he got when their mother tried to make him eat Earth vegetables. Red, I already know about the symbols, I already know about Lyo, and I already know about the archive location, he said, crossing his arms. Plus, I'm the one who figured out the coordinates. You can't just exclude me now. I can and I will, red replied firmly. Blue, these aren't just random treasure hunters. These are corrupt aid agents who want to sell Martian technology to Earth corporations. So are you saying you're going alone? Blue raised an eyebrow in a way that reminded Red uncomfortably of their father. Because that seems like a really bad idea. Red opened her mouth to argue, then realized he had a point. Going alone had gotten her into trouble that morning. If Misty and Shade hadn't shown up. Look, blue continued, you need someone who understands the technical stuff, right? And someone who can communicate with Lio if we need information. Plus, I'm smaller than you. I can fit into spaces you can't. Blue. And if you don't let me help, blue said with a grin that was equal parts innocent and devious, I'll just have to tell mom that you've been sneaking out to explore dangerous alien ruins. I'm sure she'd love to hear about your nature study project that involved ancient Martian technology. Red stared at her brother in horror. You wouldn't. I absolutely would, blue said cheerfully. You know I'm terrible at keeping secrets when mom uses her disappointed voice. Red groaned, covering her face with her hands. He was right. Blue had never been able to lie to their mother successfully. He'd crack under questioning in about 30 seconds. Fine, she said through her fingers. But we do this my way. You follow my lead, you don't take unnecessary risks. And if I say we leave, we leave immediately. Deal? Blue's grin widened. Deal. This is going to be awesome. Red wondered what she'd just gotten herself into. And that is the end of this part. Good night. Sleep tight.
