Should they tell Red's friends that they are from Mars? Red is so nervous. Will they still be her friends if she tells them? The Transfer Student Volume 2 Part 13 so here's the thing about deciding to tell your best friends you're an alien. The actual decision is the easy part. It's figuring out how to tell them that makes your brain hurt. Red and Blue are sitting on her bed the next morning, staring at a notebook where Blue has written Operation Tell Everyone We're Martians in huge letters across the top. Blue we are not calling it that. Fine. What about Project Big Reveal? Better, but still dramatic. Do we even need to write it down? I thought you could remember everything. Only the important things, like your phone's password. Besides, that's how they do it. Earth movies. Every secret operation has a cool name, red sighed, which was a step up from ugh. They've been going in circles for 20 minutes. Do they tell them all at once, or one by one? Do they start with proof or ease into it? Do they explain the whole aid situation or just the basic we're from Mars part first? What if they don't believe us? Red asks for the fifth time. What if they think we're crazy? Blue counters. What if they're scared of us? What if they think we're cool? Red stares at her brother. You really think they might think we're cool, Red? Charlie reads science fiction books for fun. Finding out his best friend is actually an alien is probably going to be the best day of his entire life. And you know what? Lou has a point. Charlie would think it's amazing. And Alexa loves mysteries. This is the biggest mystery ever. Rachel would probably want to study everything about Martian culture. Kurt would just roll with it. Because that's how Kurt is. Okay, red says, feeling a little braver. So we invite them over after school today. Casual hangout, Blue agrees. Then we show them the charm. Maybe some of our Mars stuff, explain everything. And if they freak out, Blue grins. Then we know they weren't really friends anyway. But they won't Freak out, Red. They're gonna be awesome about it. Red hopes he's right, because now that they've decided to do this, she realizes how much she wants her friends to know the real her. All of her, but figuring out the actual how without sounding completely insane. That's where Red and Blue discover they have very different approaches to problem solving. We could just walk up to them at lunch and go, hey, guess what? We're from Mars. Blue suggests drawing little stick figures in his notebook. Blue. Absolutely not. Or we could wear our old Mars clothes and see if they notice. Red gives him a look. Our Mars clothes look exactly like Earth clothes, except they're made of different fabric. That's not going to work. Fine, fine. Blue taps his pencil against his teeth. What about starting with something smaller? Like mention that we used to live somewhere really far away? They already know we moved here from another place. That's our cover story, remember? Oh yeah. Blue pauses. This is harder than I thought. They finish planning over breakfast, honey cakes again. Some things never change. And then Red heads out to catch her usual bus. On the ride to school, Red sits in her usual spot at the back with Charlie, who's already sniffling from yet another cold. She keeps going over the plan in her head. Invite everyone over. Show them the charm. Ease into the big revelation. You're being weird, charlie observes, pushing his glasses up his nose. Weirder than usual, I mean. Just thinking about stuff, red says, which is technically true. What kind of stuff? Red looks at Charlie. Sweet science fiction loving Charlie, who believes in Bigfoot and once spent a whole week convinced that the cafeteria was serving alien food and almost blurts out the truth right there. Instead, she says, want to come over after school? You and everyone else. My mom said she'd try making cookies again. Is she still putting random ingredients in everything? Charlie asks, immediately distracted. Last week she made chocolate chip cookies with raisins because she thought they were dehydrated chocolate, Red said, which gets Charlie laughing. I'm definitely in. I can eat chocolate chip cookies even if they are made with raisins. As the bus pulls up to school, Red takes a deep breath. By tonight, Charlie's going to know she's from Mars. The thought is terrifying and exciting all at once. But Blue's right. If anyone's going to think being friends with a Martian is the coolest thing ever, it's Charlie. School feels different when you know you're about to reveal your deepest secret. Like Red keeps looking at her friends during classes and thinking, in a few hours you're going to know I'm an alien. It's so weird how normal everything seems. Kids still shuffle to class the same way they always do. Red still finds most of the material way too easy. Except for English. Ugh. Mr. McCaskill is still cracking jokes that actually make her laugh. And of course, Red's still the last one to make it to the cafeteria at lunch. Some things never change. At their usual table, everything's exactly like always. Charlie's doing his weird thing where he takes apart his sandwich and eats each ingredient separately. Who does that? Rachel's got her nose buried in another thick book. This time it's something about ancient civilizations. Alexa's reorganizing her binder because apparently it's gotten too chaotic. It looked perfectly fine to Red, and Kurt's grumbling about Coach making them run extra laps in pe. Just completely normal friend stuff. And Red's about to turn their whole world upside down. Hey, she says when they're all packing up after last period, trying to sound super casual. You guys want to come over? My mom's attempting cookies again, and honestly, the results are pretty funny. There's a pause, like an actual pause, where everyone looks at each other. Wait, alexa says slowly. You're inviting us to your house? Red stomach drops. I mean, yeah. Is that weird? It's no weird, rachel says quickly. It's just you never really talk about home stuff. We always hang out here or at the library or whatever. Yeah, charlie adds. I was starting to think maybe your family was super private or something. Kurt shrugs. I just figured you didn't want us seeing where you lived. Some people are like that. Red realizes. They're right. She's always been careful to keep school life and home life separate, partly because of the whole secret alien family thing, but also because, well, what if they thought her mom and Blue were weird? Well, Blue is weird. My family's not that exciting, she says, which is the biggest lie she's ever told. But my mom's cookie experiments are pretty entertaining. She asked me yesterday if chocolate chips and coffee beans tasted the same. What? Charlie practically shouts. Did she? Actually, I stopped her in time. Barely. Okay, now I have to see this, alexa says. Your mom sounds adorable, rachel adds. And cookie experiments are fun to watch, kurt says with a grin. Plus, Charlie says, free cookies, even if they're terrible. And just like that, they're all in. Her friends are coming over, and in a couple of hours Red's going to tell them the truth about everything. Her stomach feels like it's doing backflips, but there's excitement mixed in with terror. Because maybe, just maybe, this is going to be amazing. The bus ride home after school is the weirdest one Red's ever had. Charlie's bouncing in his seat like a hyperactive puppy, asking a million questions about her house and her family and whether her mom really is as bad at cooking as Red makes her sound. Is your little brother Blue gonna be there? He asks. The one who hacks into stuff. Yeah, Blue'll be around, red says, trying not to think about how Blue's probably gonna say something suspicious within the first five minutes. Does he really break into school computers? He doesn't break into them exactly. He just finds ways around the security that technically aren't breaking any rules. Rachel looks up from her book. That's definitely breaking rules. It's bending rules, red corrects. There's a difference. When they get to Red's stop, Charlie and Rachel follow her off the bus, and Red realizes this is actually happening. Her friends are coming to her house where all her Mars stuff is hidden, where she's about to tell them she's an alien. No pressure or anything. My mom texted everyone's parents to make sure it was okay, red explains as they walk towards her house. She's big on that stuff. Smart, rachel says. My mom would totally freak if I just disappeared into someone's house without warning. Speaking of which, charlie says, checking his phone, alexa said she and Kurt are getting dropped off in like 10 minutes. Red nods, her stomach doing little flips. Perfect. That gives us time to, I don't know, mentally prepare for my brother's weirdness. How weird are we talking? Rachel asks. You'll see. They reach Red's house just as a car pulls up. Alexa hops out of the passenger seat while Kurt unfolds herself from the back. Seriously, how does someone that tall fit in a regular car? Thanks, Mom, Alexa calls, waving as the car drives away. And now they're all here, all four of Red's best friends, standing on her front porch, looking excited and curious and completely unaware that their entire understanding of reality is about to get flipped upside down. Red's heart is beating so fast she's pretty sure everyone can hear it. This is her house, her space, and she's about to let her friends see who she really is. Red opens the door to the smell of something that might be cookies. If cookies were supposed to smell like burnt vanilla mixed with is that cinnamon or cardamom? It's hard to tell. Red's mother is an accomplished scientist and did incredibly complex and important work on Mars but on Earth, simple recipes seem to confound her Mom. We're here. Red calls out, then turns to her friends. Okay, everyone, welcome to my house. Try not to judge us too harshly. But as her friends look around with curious, excited faces, Red realizes something. They're not here to judge. They're here because they care about her. Which makes what she's about to tell them either the best idea ever or the worst mistake of her life. Her mom appears from the kitchen, flour in her hair and a huge smile on her face. She's in full hostess mode, which is both adorable and slightly terrifying. You must be Charlie, she says, immediately zeroing in on him. Red talks about you constantly. And Alexa and Rachel and Kurt. She's practically bouncing with excitement. I'm so happy to finally meet you all, mom, red says weakly. I made cookies, her mom announces proudly, holding up a plate of what actually look like cookies. They're. Well, they're supposed to be chocolate chip, but I may have gotten creative with the ingredients. What kind of creative? Rachel asks cautiously. I added some spices that reminded me of home, red's mom said innocently. Red's heart stops. Spices from home? As in Mars? They smell interesting, charlie says diplomatically. That's one word for it, alexa murmurs. Red's mom beams at them. Red talks about you all constantly. Alexis said this. Charlie figured out that Kurt did something athletic. Rachel read an interesting book, Mom. Red wants to disappear into the floor. What? It's true. Her mom wipes her flower covered hands on her apron. Well, I'll let you kids hang out. The cookies need a few more minutes to cool, and I should probably clean up the kitchen before I accidentally set something on fire. Thank you so much for having us over, Mrs. Charlie starts, then realizes he doesn't actually know Red's last name. Just call me Red's mom, she said with a laugh. And thank you for being such good friends to her. She was so nervous about fitting in when we moved here. Mom, red says, even more mortified. What you were. Anyway, I'll be in the kitchen if you need anything. She disappears back toward the kitchen, humming something that definitely doesn't sound like any Earth song Red's ever heard. Your mom's really nice, rachel says. And those cookies smell unique, alexa adds diplomatically. Come on, red says quickly. Let's go upstairs. It's more comfortable in my room. That's when Blue chooses his moment. He comes sliding down the banister like he's in some kind of action movie, lands with a loud thump right in front of them, and grins at everyone. Hi, Red's friends, he announces cheerfully. Are you ready for the big revelation? Red's heart literally stops beating. Blue. What? I didn't say anything specific. Upstairs, Red hisses, grabbing Blue by the arm. Now she practically drags everyone up to her room, her mind racing. At least now they're away from her mom, who definitely doesn't need to overhear this conversation. But the damage is done. Her friends are all looking curious now. That expression they get when they smell a mystery. Alexa raises an eyebrow. Rachel closes the book she was holding. Charlie pushes his glasses up. Kurt crosses her arms. Big revelation? Lex asks slowly. Blue's being dramatic, red says quickly shooting her brother a look that could melt steel. You know how little brothers are. Actually, Blue says with the most innocent grin in the world. I'm being historically accurate. Red's going to launch Blue back to Mars herself if he doesn't stop talking. Her friends are looking around her room now, taking it all in. It's pretty normal as Earth bedrooms go. Red worked hard to make it look like any other middle schooler's space, but Charlie's staring at her desk setup with obvious envy. Whoa, Red, your computer setup is insane. He says. Is that a custom build? Blue helped me with it, red admits. I optimized the processing speed by 340%, Blue announces proudly, plopping down on Red's desk chair and spinning around. Also, I may have accidentally given it the ability to hack into the school's lunch menu system, but that was totally unintentional. Blue, Red warns. What? It's not like I actually changed anything. I just wanted to see if I could do it. Rachel settles cross legged on Red's bed while Alexa sits on the floor with her back against the wall. Kurt claims the beanbag chair in the corner, looking like a giant trying to fit into doll's furniture. Maybe this is better, like ripping off the band aid instead of slowly peeling it off. Her friends are definitely interested now, looking between her and Blue with that detective expression they get when they're solving mysteries. Okay, Rachel says, getting comfortable like she's preparing for a long story. What's going on? You're acting weird. Well, weirder than usual. And you never invite us over, alexa adds. So something's definitely up. Plus, Blue just mentioned a big revelation, charlie points out, still admiring Red's computer. Which sounds pretty important. Is this a new super secret mystery? Like have we been invaded by aliens and you know about it? Red and Blue freeze. Like completely freeze. Blue stops spinning in the chair. Red's pretty sure she stops breathing. Uh, red says. That's. That's actually not as far off as you might think, blue says, and Red wants to strangle him. Is everything okay? Kurt asks, and there's genuine concern in her voice, like, are you moving again? Or something? Red looks at her friends, really looks at them. These are the people who helped her figure out how to be a normal Earth kid, who included her when she was still fumbling with basic human interaction, who solved mysteries with her, laughed at her jokes, and made her feel like she belonged somewhere. And she's been lying to them this entire time. Red, charlie says softly, finally turning away from the computer. Whatever it is, we're your friends. You can tell us anything. Even if it's about aliens? Red asks quietly. Especially if it's about aliens, charlie said immediately. That would be the coolest thing ever. Blues bouncing in the desk chair, clearly dying to just blurt everything out. Red takes the deepest breath of her life. Before I tell you, she says, I need you to know that everything I'm about to say is going to sound completely impossible. But it's true. And I can prove it. She pauses, looking at each of their faces. The thing is, my family and I, we're not actually from where you think we are. When I said we moved here from far away, I meant really, really far away. Her friends exchange glances. Charlie pushes his glasses up nervously. How far are we talking? He asks. Like different province, far different country. Further, Red says quietly. Different continent? Rachel asks. Red shakes her head. Different planet, alexis says slowly, like she's testing out the words. The silence is so loud. Red takes one more deep breath. We're from Mars. And that is the end of this part. Good night. Sleep tight, Sam.
