Take a slow, deep breath, settle under the covers, and let the stresses of your day quietly drift away. In tonight’s soothing bedtime reading from Dorothy Mills' The Book of the Ancient Greeks, we gently explore the calm world of classical antiquity. We begin along the sunlit waters of the Piraeus harbour, following the steady rhythm of Athenian sea trade, before stepping indoors to wander through the quiet domestic routines of ancient society—from the soft-spoken pastimes of Athenian gentlemen to the peaceful sanctuary of the home. Designed to give your busy mind a calm, gentle place to rest, this quiet historical tale offers just enough detail to distract you from the day without keeping you awake. Adjust your pillows, relax your shoulders, and sleep well. Tonight on Sleepy Time Tales, we continue our slow, gentle journey through Louisa May Alcott's Little Women—and as always, nothing too exciting will happen. Mr. March has finally returned home after his long absence, and the household settles back into its quiet rhythm. He and Beth are both recovering from their illnesses, which mostly involves a great deal of resting, sitting quietly by the fire, and eating nourishing food. There is very little dialogue and even less action. Meanwhile, Meg finds herself the subject of some mild attention from Mr. Brooke—though it's all very proper, very subdued, and handled with the kind of polite awkwardness that is far more tedious than thrilling. The family discusses it in hushed, measured tones, and eventually everyone agrees that things are working out quite nicely, thank you very much. The chapter winds down with the March family gathered together, content and safe, as the fire crackles softly in the hearth. It is, in short, a perfectly pleasant and deeply unremarkable ending to a long day. So get comfortable, pull up your covers, and let the soft, unhurried rhythms of 19th-century domestic life carry you gently toward sleep. There are no surprises here—only warmth, rest, and the quiet hum of a household at peace. Can’t sleep? Tonight, let’s travel back in time for a relaxing bedtime story as we read "Roughing It" by Mark Twain. Written in 1872, this classic travel memoir follows a young Mark Twain as he journeys by stagecoach across the United States to Nevada. While the original tale is full of humor, frontier adventure, and pioneer history, it is read tonight in a calm, monotonous tone designed to help you relax, decompress, and drift off into a deep, peaceful sleep. (You might even catch me struggling to decide on the proper pronunciation of "Nevada" along the way!)Whether you suffer from insomnia, mind-racing, or just need a soothing voice to help you unwind after a long day, close your eyes and let this boring bedtime story help you fall asleep fast. This week’s boring reading is all about the construction of various Egyptian temples and how their construction changed based on available space and the surroundings, and how decoration got a lot busier up till the times of the Romans. Maybe fascinating for some people but it’s as dry as the Sahara, so you’ll be sleeping very soon. Find Manual of Egyptian Archaeology and Guide to the Study of Antiquities in Egypt – G. Tonight as you prepare to sleep we will be finishing off this classic story, considered by many to be a precursor to modern science fiction. The story picks up as the Empress has returned to her world and is ending a war through a show of force. Then the Emperor shows the Dutchess his stables and the story comes to an end with an appeal to the imagination. It ends a little early, so I’ve thrown a few poetry reading at the end from the Patreon. Tonight, let the gentle world of nature carry you into a deep, restful sleep. In this episode, we are pairing the soft, rhythmic prose of two classic nature books to help your mind unwind and release the day. We begin with an evening reading from Mary Howitt’s Birds and Their Nests, focusing on the clever architectures of magpies and the quiet, industrious habits of nuthatches. From there, we drift into the calming, nostalgic pages of Neltje Blanchan’s Bird Neighbors, moving slowly through its thoughtful introduction and foreword.
