Smart Less media. Did you know humans aren't the only animals that can solve puzzles? Puzzle solving has also been documented among chimps, elephants, and dolphins. But let's see a dolphin put out a podcast if they think they're so smart. This is Clueless. Clueless. CL.
Sean Hayes
I'm clueless.
Elliot Kalin
Welcome to Smart List presents Clueless, the only podcast that allows you to measure your puzzle skills against a yardstick. Named Sean Hayes, I'm your host, Elliot Kalin, and I'm as surprised by that as you are. And joining us now is the star of the show, by special arrangement with the government of Hazelvania, the regent of riddles, the Duke of deduction, the baron of being good at puzzles, Sean Hayes.
Sean Hayes
Yay. Oh, hold for applause, hold for applause.
Elliot Kalin
Hold, applause, applause, applause.
Sean Hayes
Thank you. I've been holding my whole life for applause. Okay, so let's. Yeah.
Elliot Kalin
Now, normally, I'd be happy to make Sean answer today's questions alone, but we've been experimenting with bringing a third person into our contestant contestee relationship. Sean, who's joining you today?
Sean Hayes
My bestie, Raina Larson is here, and she has been in my life literally since I'm 15 years old. So, what, six years now? Ah, beat me to it. Same jokes. Same joke. J. And we call each other Poochie. I don't know how it started, but. Hi, Poochie.
Raina Larson
Hi, Poochie. Thanks for having me.
Sean Hayes
Yeah, thanks for joining us. And it's her bedtime, so we're gonna. She's gonna be really sharp.
Elliot Kalin
We're going to continue the clueless tradition of recording when someone is tired. So we'll see how that affects the puzzle. Great.
Sean Hayes
I win.
Elliot Kalin
I know you listeners at home are on the edge of your seats waiting for the answer to last episode's cliffhanger puzzle. It would be downright cruel for me to make you wait a second longer for the answer to that puzzle. But first, I just gotta ask Sean Raina, would you rather be 50ft tall or 5 inches tall?
Sean Hayes
Oh, that's such a good question.
Raina Larson
Oh, 5, 50ft.
Sean Hayes
I have to say, there's something cozy about being 5 inches. There's something not so cozy about being 50ft.
Raina Larson
I feel like you could get more work at 50ft. Like, there's things you could do. Like, what would you do if you're five inches?
Elliot Kalin
That's true. You're useful at 50ft.
Sean Hayes
You could vacuum. Seriously, you could vacuum certain areas of carpets and stuff at 5 inches.
Raina Larson
That means vacuuming with a vacuum.
Sean Hayes
Yeah, you make a 5 inch. Okay, you know, little vacuum cleaner.
Elliot Kalin
I mean, I don't agree with that. A five inch vacuum works. A 50 foot vacuum, that's a weather problem. That's a natural disaster.
Sean Hayes
Yeah, yeah.
Elliot Kalin
Thank you for that answer. I think we answered that question better than anyone else ever has in the history of the world. But I can hear the listeners screams of frustrations right now. So we better solve last week's cliffhanger puzzle. Now, as a reminder, it was a riddle that went like this. Here's an impression I've been working on. First I'm angry, then I'm tart, Then I'm cowardly, Then I'm jealous, then I'm sad, then I'm psychic, then I'm verbose. What am I?
Sean Hayes
Do I guess now?
Elliot Kalin
Yes, Sean, guess. Tell us. Tell us. I want nothing more than to hear your guess.
Sean Hayes
That's probably so wrong, but is it a rainbow?
Elliot Kalin
You're exactly right. You did it. You are.
Raina Larson
This turn.
Elliot Kalin
I was gonna say you are a rainbow. It's the impressionist rainbow. I mean, you also are a rainbow. You're a colorful character who shines across the sky, but the answer is a rainbow. Yes.
Sean Hayes
Yes. Because every word is associated with a color.
Elliot Kalin
Yes, exactly. Anger is like seeing red. You're tart, like an orange. I'm yellow, like a coward. Jealousy is green with envy. Sadness is feeling blue. Psychic is an indigo child, which is a psychic thing. Look it up. And finally, I'm verbose because I'm purple prose. You're right. Each concept connects to a color of the rainbow in rainbow order to make a rainbow. Sean, that was astounding. You got it so fast.
Sean Hayes
Oh, thanks. Oh, well, look at that.
Raina Larson
Why didn't I get that?
Sean Hayes
Well, I feel all of those things every single day at the same time. Go ahead.
Elliot Kalin
Oh, wow. You must be very busy.
Sean Hayes
I sure am. Upstairs? Yeah.

Let'S keep moving to today's main game. It's called Odd One Out.
Indiana Jones Game Promo Voice
Odd One.
Elliot Kalin
Which wants the odd one out?
Smartless Media Promo Voice
Get out.
Sean Hayes
I like that theme song.
Elliot Kalin
It says what it does. Which is the best thing about a song. Yeah, get out for this installment of Odd One Out. Picture this. This is a scenario NSync the band is reuniting for a one night only concert on an ocean cruise liner. It's the stuff of dreams. The only problem is each of them packed too many items for their cabin. So I'm going to tell you the items each of them packed and you're going to tell me which of the four things they brought has to be left behind because it doesn't fit the category that the other three things are in. So for example, if someone brought a hammer, a wrench, a wine glass and a screwdriver on the cruise, which one would they leave behind?
Sean Hayes
Of course, the wine glass.
Raina Larson
Wine glass.
Elliot Kalin
Yes, you're right, a wine glass. Because the other are tools. Although wine glass is kind of a tool of amusement.
Sean Hayes
Yeah, I guess.
Raina Larson
By the way, Sean's kind of a tool of amusement too.
Elliot Kalin
Are you ready for the game?
Sean Hayes
I Love it.
Raina Larson
Yes.
Elliot Kalin
1 let's start with the first one. Justin brought a mask, a cup of coffee, a sheep and a pillow.
Raina Larson
And a pillow.
Sean Hayes
Okay, a mask, a cup of coffee, a sheep and a pillow. Ooh, I know what it is. It's a mask.
Raina Larson
Wait a minute.
Elliot Kalin
I'd like to hear the logic behind that decision. And Reina, feel free to disagree with him. This is a cooperative game, so you can talk it out.
Raina Larson
My first thought was cup of coffee, but I wasn't, you know, a mask.
Sean Hayes
So I think mask because all the other words have double letters in them.
Elliot Kalin
Oh, and Reina, why did you think coffee?
Raina Larson
Because the other three reminded me of things you used for sleep.
Elliot Kalin
Raina, you're right.
Sean Hayes
Reyna's right.
Elliot Kalin
You're right.
Sean Hayes
But that's pretty good though. They all have double letters except mask.
Elliot Kalin
Now that is good. That was a good one. You have broken the game slightly. But Reyna, you were right. Luckily, this is a cooperative game, so you both get that point.
Sean Hayes
Raina, congratulations.
Elliot Kalin
Let's go on to the second question. JC Brought smoke, fog, steam and rain. Which of those items does not fit the same category as the others?
Sean Hayes
Smoke, fog, steam and rain. Well, my instinct says Raina, what do you think? I think it's steam because smoke. No. Well, rain because smoke, fog and steam are all gases.
Elliot Kalin
Yes, you got that right. Those are gases. Rain is a liquid. The answer is rain.
Sean Hayes
Raina. Raina is a liquid.
Elliot Kalin
Raina, are you a liquid? Yes, I could. The disdain in that pause was so delicious. It was so beautiful.
Raina Larson
Good one, poochie.
Sean Hayes
Thank you, pooch.
Elliot Kalin
Moving on to number three. Lance brought an Amazon, a gnome, a hobbit and a pixie.
Sean Hayes
Which does Amazon? An Amazon like the jungle.
Elliot Kalin
Like an Amazon warrior. Let's say an Amazon warrior.
Raina Larson
I'm going to say Amazon.
Elliot Kalin
Raina, why do you think Amazon?
Raina Larson
Aren't the other three like little?
Elliot Kalin
Exactly right. Amazon's are tall, the other are short.
Sean Hayes
Yeah, that one was easy.
Raina Larson
Like 50 foot Sean.
Elliot Kalin
50 foot Sean would not have fit with that group. But 5 inch Sean would have fit with the group.
Sean Hayes
Yes.
Elliot Kalin
You're both doing great. Now we're on to number four. There's only two questions left. Number four. Chris brought a needle, a hook, a net and a spear.
Sean Hayes
A hook, a needle, a hook, a net and a spear.
Raina Larson
Needle.
Sean Hayes
Needle. Wait. Hook, net and a spear.
Raina Larson
I'm going needle. I mean, because I don't know. You don't because you can't catch a fish with a needle.
Elliot Kalin
Exactly right. You can't catch a fish with a needle. Maybe you can maybe a knitting needle if you're really fast.
Raina Larson
There you go.
Elliot Kalin
But this. You're right. It's a hook, a net and a spear are all fishing implements. But a needle, you can't again.
Sean Hayes
Oh, look at that.
Elliot Kalin
Unless you're going to sew a trap for a fish. I suppose you could correct.
Sean Hayes
Yeah. Yeah.
Elliot Kalin
And now we have one more question. You're doing amazing. This is. You are a very strong team. I'm very impressed by it. But are you strong enough for number five? Joey brought a balloon, a dragon, a rock and time.
Raina Larson
The herb or the how we pass minutes.
Elliot Kalin
Great question. How we pass minutes? The chronological one.
Sean Hayes
So balloon, dragon ball, rock and time.
Raina Larson
A rock or the rock?
Elliot Kalin
Another very good question. Just a rock. The object and not the rock. The wrestler turned actor.
Raina Larson
Oh, my gosh. Come on.
Sean Hayes
I know. Balloon. Something that floats. Oh, something.
Elliot Kalin
I'm gonna give you just another couple seconds.
Raina Larson
Okay. A couple seconds.
Elliot Kalin
You've been doing great. If you don't get this one, there's no shame in it. But if you do get it, great. But if you don't, again, there's no shame. But if you know, you'll feel better.
Sean Hayes
But a dragon. I'm just going to shot in the dark. I'm going to say. I'm going to say rock.
Elliot Kalin
You're right.
Sean Hayes
Am I really?
Elliot Kalin
Once again, the haze luck has pulled through.
Raina Larson
Why rock?
Elliot Kalin
Do you want to try to guess the reason for it?
Sean Hayes
I have no idea.
Elliot Kalin
I just guessed because the other things are all things that can fly. It sounded like you were almost getting there. A balloon, a dragon and time can all fly.
Sean Hayes
That's very good.
Elliot Kalin
A rock can't fly on its own. You would have to throw it.
Raina Larson
How do you bring time?
Elliot Kalin
That's another good question. Fog time. They're packing a lot of interesting objects. I run out. But wait. Stop right there. Remain seated. Hold on. The game is not over until you face the terrifying majesty of the mega Clue.
T-Mobile Terms and Conditions Voice
Mega clue question.
Elliot Kalin
A final question built out of all the previous questions put together. Each answer in this game has been a clue to where the NSYNC cruise is going to. And those answers were. If you would like a reminder. Yes. Coffee, rain, Amazon Needle, rock. Oh, what place do those have in common? Oh, yeah.
Sean Hayes
Seattle.
Elliot Kalin
You got it. Seattle.
Raina Larson
You got it. You got it.
Elliot Kalin
What a sweep. You have swept the game.
Raina Larson
Good job, Poochie.
Elliot Kalin
Amazing.
Sean Hayes
Good job to you, Poochie.
Elliot Kalin
Team Poochie is a good job to you. Good job to you listeners. Did you do better than Poochie and Poochie? If so, treat yourself to an extra scoop of ice cream today. Did you do worse than the Poochies? Console yourself with an extra scoop of ice cream today. I guess I'm saying is, whatever the situation, you need to eat more ice cream. It's the calcium you need that's the most important thing.
Sean Hayes
Did you do as good as Poochie?
Raina Larson
The Poochies.
Sean Hayes
The Poochies. That was fun.
Raina Larson
Super fun.
Elliot Kalin
Even more than ice cream, though, what everyone needs now is one final puzzle. A puzzle which could only be described as a cliffhanger.
Sean Hayes
Oh.
Elliot Kalin
Strangely enough, today's cliffhanger puzzle also relates to NSync. This is just a boy band day. Today on Clueless. Apparently, the band's name was created by rearranging the last letters of the first names of the original group members. And is from Justin, S is from Chris, Y is from Joey, N is from Jason, and C is from JC and then Jason was replaced by Lance, but they just kept the N rather than calling it L Sync or N Silk. Anyway, if you did decide to remove one of the n's from the name NSync and you rearrange the remaining letters, you could get the initials of another vocal supergroup, only this time, that group is using the first letters of each member's last name. What is this supergroup? Sean, Reina, promise me that as you spend the days until our next episode feverishly working on this puzzle, that you at least take a break every four hours.
Sean Hayes
Yes. No, I will do that. Look, I'm already working on it. That's why I had to pause you so diligently.
Elliot Kalin
Got to work on this puzzle.
Raina Larson
Wait, we're just taking out one N?
Elliot Kalin
Just one n. But you've got a lot of time to work on this, so as far as you need to do it now. But if you did do it now, I'd be very impressed.
Sean Hayes
No, no, we'll wait because we want to, you know, we want to build the tension.
Elliot Kalin
Yeah. That's suspense. Yeah. You want everyone to come back for the next one. Ding. That fake bell sound that I just made means we've reached the end of today's episode. Raina, thank you for making this a day worth drawing a smiley face on next to in my diary. Sean, thank you for being the best of the good sports and audience. Thank you so much for listening. Because if a riddle gets asked in the forest and there's no one around to hear it, is it really a podcast? I'll let the philosophers answer that one. This has been Clueless. I've been your host, Ilya Kalin telling you to prepare for landing. Please stow your tray table and return your ears to their upright position. That's the end of it.

SmartLess Presents ClueLess: Episode 109 - "Odd One Out" (w/ Reyna Larson)
Release Date: December 12, 2024
In Episode 109 of SmartLess Presents ClueLess, host Elliott Kalan teams up with celebrity contestant Sean Hayes and special guest Reyna Larson for an engaging session of puzzles and brainteasers. The episode, titled "Odd One Out," challenges the trio to identify items that don't fit within specific categories, testing their deductive skills and teamwork.
Elliott Kalan kicks off the episode by highlighting the intellectual prowess required for puzzle-solving, humorously pondering if dolphins could host a podcast given their recognized intelligence among animals.
Sean Hayes introduces himself with a playful admission:
"I'm clueless." [01:03]
Reyna Larson, Sean's longtime friend since they were teenagers, joins as the special guest. Affectionately nicknamed "Poochie," Reyna brings a sharp mind to the game despite joking about being "in her bedtime" during recording.
Elliott begins with a light-hearted "Would You Rather" question to warm up the contestants:
"Sean, Raina, would you rather be 50ft tall or 5 inches tall?" [02:20]
Sean opts for being 5 inches tall, emphasizing the practicality in tasks like vacuuming miniature spaces:
"You could vacuum certain areas of carpets and stuff at 5 inches." [03:00]
Reyna counters by valuing the utility of being 50ft tall:
"I feel like you could get more work at 50ft." [02:50]
Elliott humorously disagrees:
"A 50 foot vacuum, that's a weather problem. That's a natural disaster." [03:14]
The heart of the episode revolves around the "Odd One Out" game, where Elliott presents scenarios involving members of NSYNC packing items for a cruise. The contestants must identify which item doesn't belong based on a common theme.
Items: mask, cup of coffee, sheep, pillow
Initial Guess: Sean and Reyna suggest "mask" and "cup of coffee."
Correct Answer: "Pillow"
"Pillow reminds me of things you used for sleep." – Reyna Larson [08:27]
Items: smoke, fog, steam, rain
Sean identifies "rain" as the odd one out since it is a liquid while the others are gases.
"Rain is a liquid." [09:05]
Elliott confirms:
"Rain does not fit with smoke, fog, and steam as it is the only liquid." [09:23]
Items: Amazon, gnome, hobbit, pixie
Reyna correctly points out "Amazon" as the odd one, distinguishing it from the smaller mythical creatures.
"Amazons are tall, the others are short." [09:57]
"Like 50 foot Sean would not have fit with that group." [10:17]
Items: needle, hook, net, spear
Reyna accurately chooses "needle," noting it isn't a conventional fishing implement.
"You can't catch a fish with a needle." – Reyna Larson [10:42]
Items: balloon, dragon, rock, time
Sean selects "rock," recognizing that the rest can "fly" metaphorically or literally.
"Balloon, dragon, and time can all fly. A rock can't fly on its own." [12:04]
After successfully navigating the five rounds, Elliott presents a final challenge that ties all previous answers together:
"Each answer in this game has been a clue to where the NSYNC cruise is going to. And those answers were coffee, rain, Amazon, needle, rock. What place do those have in common?" [12:50]
Sean immediately deduces:
"Seattle." [13:12]
Elliott confirms:
"You got it. Seattle." [13:13]
As the episode nears its end, Elliott introduces a tantalizing cliffhanger puzzle related to NSYNC's name origin and invites listeners to solve it before the next episode:
"If you did decide to remove one of the n's from the name NSync and you rearrange the remaining letters, you could get the initials of another vocal supergroup, only this time, that group is using the first letters of each member's last name. What is this supergroup?" [14:07]
Both Sean and Reyna express eagerness to unravel the mystery:
Sean: "No, we'll wait because we want to... build the tension." [15:15]
Elliott wraps up the episode by congratulating the contestants on their teamwork and puzzle-solving capabilities. He encourages listeners to engage with the final cliffhanger puzzle and teases more brainteasers in upcoming episodes.
"Thank you so much for listening... This has been Clueless. I've been your host, Elliott Kalan..." [15:20]
Sean Hayes:
"I'm clueless." [01:03]
"Because every word is associated with a color." [04:15]
"You must be very busy." [04:43]
Reyna Larson:
"Hi, Poochie. Thanks for having me." [02:04]
"I'm gonna say Amazon." [10:04]
"Good one, Poochie." [13:17]
Elliott Kalan:
"Humans aren't the only animals that can solve puzzles." [00:31]
"This is the impressionist rainbow." [04:03]
"You need to eat more ice cream." [13:23]
Episode Duration: Approximately 17 minutes
Listeners: Whether you're a puzzle enthusiast or just looking for some entertaining brainteasers, Episode 109 of "SmartLess Presents ClueLess" offers a delightful mix of humor, challenge, and camaraderie. Tune in to see if you can solve the same puzzles as Sean and Reyna!
