Why did the chicken cross the road? The authorities want you to believe he did it to get to the other side. But what if the chicken was pushed across the road? Did he even make it to the other side at all? Has anyone seen this chicken lately? It's time for somebody to finally get to the bottom of this. But not us. Someone else. This is Clueless.
Devin Tory Bryant
Clueless. Clueless.
Sean Hayes
I'm gonna be honest with you, Elliot. I was so focused on the cliffhanger and I'm trying to solve it, and I think I got it and I still have hiccups.
Elliot Kaelin
If you want a private performance that cold open, I'm happy to give you at a later date, but still. Welcome to Smartless Presents Clueless, the puzzle podcast. That's like a no holds barred mixed martial arts battle between you and Sean Hayes, only instead of fighting, you solve puzzles together. I'm your host, Elliott Kaelin. And yes, I did get a haircut. Thank you for noticing. Please join me in welcoming our constant contestant, the man who's got an Emmy, a Tony, and a Scottie, Sean Hayes.
Sean Hayes
That's really funny. Hi. Thank you for having me today. This is incredible.
Elliot Kaelin
I'm so glad you could make it. It was such my pleasure to have you here today. It's wonderful.
Sean Hayes
I mean, as far as a contractual obligation goes, this just feels so great.
Elliot Kaelin
This is one of the better ones.
Sean Hayes
Yeah. I love this show. And Scotty, I love this guy. Scotty. Scotty, what is your last name and where does it come from for the audience? Please tell us.
Scotty Eisenogle
Thank you so much, Sean. It's a pleasure to be here. And he's delaying.
Elliot Kaelin
He doesn't want to answer the question.
Scotty Eisenogle
No, no, no. I totally want to icin, ogle, isonogle. There's lots of different ways to pronounce it. It's just whatever flows off the tongue easiest, but it's actually Austrian.
Elliot Kaelin
Oh, yeah. So you're saying you don't come from a long line of icenoglers?
Scotty Eisenogle
Ice snoglers.
Elliot Kaelin
No.
Sean Hayes
Wait, tell me I still have hiccups.
Elliot Kaelin
Wait, hold on. Did you feel that? What? A chill has just descended on the podcast. Ooh, I've got a hoodie. We're being haunted by last episode's Cliffhanger puzzle, and it can't cross over to the other side until we exorcise this podcast with its answer.
Sean Hayes
Yes.
Elliot Kaelin
You may remember it was a math related riddle that went thusly. If 1 and 1 equals 6 and 1 and 3 equals 8.
Sean Hayes
Yeah.
Elliot Kaelin
What do 1 and 4 equal?
Sean Hayes
Okay, ready?
Elliot Kaelin
Yes.
Sean Hayes
I hope I'm right. Is it nine?
Elliot Kaelin
I'm so sorry. It is not nine.
Sean Hayes
Oh, shit.
Elliot Kaelin
But I want to know what you're thinking.
Sean Hayes
Well, one plus one is two, add four. Three plus one add four is eight. Four plus one add four.
Elliot Kaelin
I. You know what? I'm gonna. That's not our correct answer, but I'm gonna give it to you as an correct answer. An answer that could be correct.
Sean Hayes
An. An correct answer, and correct answer.
Elliot Kaelin
The correct answer in this case is seven. Because you're adding up the numbers of letters. There's six letters in one and one. Cause there's three letters in each of them. There's eight letters in one and three, and there's seven letters in one and four. But, you know, you took it mathematically, and I think a mathematician would say sean is right and that we are wrong. So I think that's okay.
Sean Hayes
No, that's good. That's good.
Scotty Eisenogle
That's good stuff, Elliot.
Sean Hayes
I wish I got that. Scotty, were you even close?
Scotty Eisenogle
Not even remotely close. I have to admit, I was not close on that one. I was going a different route. But you know what? That's just a little peek into how I did on my SATs.
Elliot Kaelin
All right, I'm glad we could see that cliffhanger puzzle. Now that your answer has been revealed, the power of Clueless compels you. Begone.
Sean Hayes
Oh, I love that.
Elliot Kaelin
I think we did a good job with that.
Sean Hayes

Elliot Kaelin
Listeners at home, did you get the answer to the Cliffhanger puzzle? If not, you should expect to be haunted by that same puzzle until you figured it out. As for the rest of us, we'll be moving on to today's main puzzle. Let me just see what it is. Ooh. That's the sound of me being excited for today's game. And also me saying the game's acronym. We're playing Odd one Out.
Sean Hayes
Nice Odd One.
Elliot Kaelin
Which one's the Odd one Out? Get out.
Sean Hayes
That's my favorite. I think that's my favorite one.
Elliot Kaelin
There's so many good ones.
Sean Hayes
I know there's so many good ones.
Elliot Kaelin
Yeah. All right. Today's game of Odd one Out involves a rock and roll dream scenario. That's right, the complete classic lineup of Guns N Roses is reuniting for the first time in decades to play one night only at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. It's the day of the soundcheck, and the band members are rolling up to the hotel one by one. But they each brought more items than the hotel staff can handle. And they need to leave something at the door. Each one of them needs to leave one Item. Tell each GnR member which of the four items they brought needs to be left behind so that the other three things belong in the same category together. For example, if someone brought a hammer, a wrench, a wine glass, and a screwdriver, which one should they leave behind?
Sean Hayes
Oh, a wine glass. Sorry, they're all tools. Yeah, sorry. Like me.
Elliot Kaelin
The wine glass. Yeah, yeah. I would never say that, because the other three items are on the category of tools. Although technically, a wine glass is a tool for having a good time.
Sean Hayes
Nice.
Elliot Kaelin
Sean, Scotty, have you reached your limit or are you ready to play this game of odd one out?
Devin Tory Bryant
Oh.
Sean Hayes
So excited.
Scotty Eisenogle
Let's take a breathalyzer. Let's go.
Sean Hayes
Ah, nice.
Elliot Kaelin
Odd one. So the first band member, Izzy, brought cream, a goat, a cottage, and a clover. Which of these things does not match the category of the others?
Sean Hayes
Clover. Here's why. The goat cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese. There's no clover. There's no clover cheese.
Scotty Eisenogle
Clover cheese.
Elliot Kaelin
There's no clover cheese. Exactly. They got that one fast. That was great. It's the only one that is not a kind of cheese. Let's go to number two. Steven brought a tiger, a ladybug, a candy cane, and a referee. Which of those is the odd one out? Tiger, ladybug, candy cane, referee. It sounds like I'm trying to figure out the phrase that will awaken you from your hypnotic conditioning.
Sean Hayes
I mean, I think of like Candyland. The logo's a candy cane. I don't know if that. But no. A referee. I think in black and white. Stripes, stripes, candy cane. It's a stripes. A ladybug has tigress stripes and ladybug has dots. So ladybug.
Elliot Kaelin
You got it right?
Scotty Eisenogle
Ladybug.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly.
Scotty Eisenogle
Wow, look at this.
Elliot Kaelin
Scotty, you got it. You got just barely behind, but still on the board. Question number three. Duff brought a horseshoe, a jazz record, a rocket and the sun. Okay, horseshoe, horseshoe, jazz record, rocket, sun. Which of those does not fit the same category as the others?
Sean Hayes
Let's see.
Scotty Eisenogle
Horseshoe, rocket, horseshoe.
Sean Hayes
U shaped jazz records around rocket.
Scotty Eisenogle
Oh, horseshoe.
Elliot Kaelin
Why?
Scotty Eisenogle
Because it's U shaped. Others are round.
Sean Hayes
Well, a rocket's not round.
Scotty Eisenogle
Well, a rocket is like a Tube. It's round. It's a round tube.
Elliot Kaelin
You know what? I'm gonna give it to you. Horseshoe is the right answer you got not exactly the right reason. The horseshoe is the only one that is not in the name of an NBA team. There's the Utah Jazz, the Houston Rockets, and the Phoenix Suns.
Scotty Eisenogle
What?
Sean Hayes
You said jazz record.
Scotty Eisenogle
Yeah.
Elliot Kaelin
Well, you can't say he brought a jazz with him, right? What is that? That would just confuse you. Number four, Slash brought a penny, an eel, a guitar, and a toothbrush.
Scotty Eisenogle
Oh, God.
Elliot Kaelin
A penny, an eel, a guitar, and a toothbrush. Which of those doesn't fit the category as the others?
Sean Hayes
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, so a penny is round and it's copper. Oh, you can use penny for electricity. You can use eel electric, and you can have an electric guitar.
Scotty Eisenogle
Electric guitar.
Sean Hayes
No, they all can be. Oh, Penny, Penny, Penny. Because all the others are electric.
Elliot Kaelin
You got it. That's exactly right. Penny. The rest. Electric guitar. Electric heel. Ambush.
Sean Hayes
Penny is copper, and that is a source for electricity.
Elliot Kaelin
If you can enough of them together, I think maybe you can do something. But you'd never say, like, hand me that electric penny.
Sean Hayes
No, you would not. This is correct.
Scotty Eisenogle
You would not.
Elliot Kaelin
This is a great name for a band, though. If you want to see a band called Electric Penny, you know you're in for a good time.
Sean Hayes
They open for Nickelback. Go ahead.
Elliot Kaelin
Question five. The final member of Guns N Roses, Axel brought a piano, a wishbone, a toolbox, and an ear. Seems gross, but rock stars do that kind of stuff. Just carry ears around. A piano, a wishbone, a toolbox, and an ear. Which one is the odd one out and why?
Sean Hayes
Okay, so piano's black and white. It's got 88 keys. There's an upright. It's grand. Toolbox is a something you store stuff in. Here is wax. Earth wax. Wait, uh. Oh, he's got something.
Scotty Eisenogle
I'm going to say wishbone, because the other three have hammers.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly right. Scotty, you did it. Scotty, you did it. A piano, a toolbox, and an ear. They all have hammers in them. The ear has that little bone called the hammer in it. So the wishbone.
Sean Hayes
That's right, Scotty.
Elliot Kaelin
How about that, Scotty? Fantastic. That was great. Get out. But we're not done yet. Like all great reunion concerts, this one has a mega clue. Mega clue question. So let's pick up our Guns n Roses story again with the band after the concert. It went great. Such a smash success, the guys decided to hit the hotel's casino. Unfortunately, they all lost thousands of dollars for today's mega clue. Why did they all go on a losing streak after the concert? And here's a hint. It's related to the items they left behind in our game. Would you like me to remind you what those items are?
Sean Hayes
Please.
Elliot Kaelin
Those items were a clover, a ladybug, a horseshoe, a penny, and a wishbone.
Sean Hayes
Can you say word?
Elliot Kaelin
Ladybug, wishbone, a clover, a ladybug, a horseshoe, a penny, and a wishbone. Why did they go on a big losing streak without those items?
Scotty Eisenogle
Aren't these all symbols of luck?
Elliot Kaelin
You got it, Scotty.
Sean Hayes
Nice.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly right. They left their luckiest items behind. Four leaf clover. If a ladybug lands on you, horseshoe, lucky penny, wishbone. Great job. Great job, you two.
Sean Hayes
Nice. That was really good.
Elliot Kaelin
So well together. Have you guys met? You should get to know each other better.
Scotty Eisenogle
Big fan, big fan, Big fan, Big fan, Big fan.
Elliot Kaelin
Listeners at home, did you do as well as Sean and Scotty? If not, that's okay. You were probably just still distracted by the cliffhanger puzzle ghost that is still haunting your living room. And speaking of cliffhanger puzzles, here comes today's cliffhanger puzzle. I think that was my best segue ever in my life. I think that was the best segue I ever had. The cliffhanger puzzle is a little extra riddle to help you while away the hours until the next episode. And you've just got to while away those hours or they start to pile up. You just cannot. You gotta while em away. You gotta get rid of them. Today's puzzle is an especially puzzling one, and it goes thusly. My overly specific friend insists the mars taco he just bought will help him get stronger. I keep asking him what he's talking about and he just keeps saying mars taco knowingly and flexing his guns at him. What's another word for a mars taco that's less inappropriately specific?
Sean Hayes
Didn't understand a word.
Elliot Kaelin
This is the most confusing one I think we've ever had. So there's two parts. Puzzle. Figuring out what it is and then. And then the figuring out how to do it. And then the answer.
Sean Hayes
Right? But what is he? He's eating a mars taco because why? It's going to make him what he.
Elliot Kaelin
Says it's gonna make him help him get stronger. So what's a less inappropriately specific word from Mars taco? You'll have until next episode to think about it because that's all the clueless we have for you this episode. Join us next time for more puzzle fun. Or join us last time if you're experiencing life backwards, which happens sometimes. Before we go, I'd like to thank Scotty Eisenogle for being a true friend. I'd like to thank Sean Hayes for being the perfect frenemy and and I'd like to thank you, the audience, for being such a friendly audience or fraudience. I'll think of a better name for it later.
Sean Hayes
Very good.
Elliot Kaelin

SmartLess Presents ClueLess, hosted by Emmy-winning writer Elliott Kaelin, invites listeners into a world of puzzles, brainteasers, and conundrums in a fun and engaging biweekly format. In Episode 123, titled "Odd One Out," Elliott welcomes recurring contestant Sean Hayes and guest Scotty Icenogle for an episode filled with challenging riddles and lively discussions.
[01:18] Elliott Kaelin:
Elliott opens the episode by setting the stage for a friendly yet competitive puzzle-solving showdown between the listeners and Sean Hayes. He humorously notes his new haircut, immediately engaging the audience with his vibrant personality.
[01:57] Elliott Kaelin:
Introducing Sean Hayes, Elliott highlights Sean's impressive credentials: "the man who's got an Emmy, a Tony, and a Scottie." Sean's warm and humorous response, "[01:45] Sean Hayes: That's really funny. Hi. Thank you for having me today. This is incredible," sets a welcoming tone for the episode.
[02:37] Elliott Kaelin:
Elliott revisits the previous episode's cliffhanger puzzle, a math-related riddle: "If 1 and 1 equals 6 and 1 and 3 equals 8. What do 1 and 4 equal?"
[03:00] Sean Hayes:
Sean ventures a guess at 9, based on adding the numbers mathematically, stating, "[03:04] Sean Hayes: I hope I'm right. Is it nine?"
[03:26] Elliott Kaelin:
Elliott reveals the correct answer is 7, explaining, "[03:26] Elliott Kaelin: The correct answer in this case is seven. Because you're adding up the numbers of letters. There's six letters in one and one... seven letters in one and four." This twist from a mathematical to a linguistic approach showcases the podcast's creative puzzle designs.
[03:50] Sean Hayes:
Sean appreciates the unique solution: "[03:50] Sean Hayes: That’s good. That’s good."
[06:33] Elliott Kaelin:
Transitioning smoothly, Elliott introduces the episode's main game, Odd One Out, framed within a rock and roll dream scenario involving a Guns N' Roses reunion. He explains the setup where each band member must decide which item to leave behind during their soundcheck.
[07:44] Sean Hayes:
Elliott presents the first scenario for Izzy: "cream, a goat, a cottage, and a clover." Sean quickly identifies the odd one out.
[08:18] Sean Hayes:
"Clover. Here's why. The goat cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese. There's no clover cheese."
Elliott commends Sean’s quick thinking, highlighting the category-based reasoning.
Throughout the episode, Elliott, Sean, and Scotty engage in dynamic interactions as they tackle each Odd One Out puzzle:
Steven's Items: "a tiger, a ladybug, a candy cane, and a referee."
Scotty Icenogle: "Ladybug."
(09:09)
Scotty correctly identifies "ladybug" as the odd one out, linking the others to striped NBA teams.
Duff's Items: "a horseshoe, a jazz record, a rocket, and the sun."
Scotty Icenogle: "Horseshoe."
(09:36)
Scotty reasons that "horseshoe" doesn't align with NBA team names like Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets, and Phoenix Suns.
Slash's Items: "a penny, an eel, a guitar, and a toothbrush."
Sean Hayes: "Penny."
(10:21)
Sean discerns that "penny" doesn't fit the electric theme of the other items.
Axel's Items: "a piano, a wishbone, a toolbox, and an ear."
Scotty Icenogle: "Wishbone."
(11:58)
Scotty notes that "wishbone" is the odd one out as the others contain a hammer component.
[12:44] Elliott Kaelin:
After solving the individual puzzles, Elliott poses a mega clue: "Why did the band go on a losing streak after the concert?"
He hints that the answer relates to the items they left behind: "clover, ladybug, horseshoe, penny, and wishbone."
[13:03] Scotty Icenogle:
Scotty quickly connects the dots, stating, "Aren’t these all symbols of luck?"
[13:05] Elliott Kaelin:
Elliott confirms, "Exactly right. They left their luckiest items behind." This reinforces the thematic consistency of luck-based puzzles throughout the episode.
[13:19] Elliott Kaelin:
As the main game concludes, Elliott introduces a new cliffhanger puzzle to keep listeners intrigued until the next episode:
"My overly specific friend insists the mars taco he just bought will help him get stronger. I keep asking him what he's talking about and he just keeps saying mars taco knowingly and flexing his guns at him. What's another word for a mars taco that's less inappropriately specific?"
[14:21] Elliott Kaelin:
He admits the complexity: "This is the most confusing one I think we've ever had." Encouraging listeners to ponder the riddle, Elliott ensures continued engagement.
[15:14] Devin Tory Bryant:
Producer Devin wraps up the episode with credits, acknowledging the team's contributions and encouraging listeners to follow, subscribe, and review the show.
[15:05] Elliott Kaelin:
Elliott signs off with his signature flair: "reminding you that a mind is a terrible thing to wash."
Elliott Kaelin:
"[02:37] I think a mathematician would say Sean is right and that we are wrong. So I think that's okay."
Sean Hayes:
"[13:05] Nice."
"[11:58] A piano, a toolbox, and an ear. They all have hammers in them."
Scotty Icenogle:
"[13:03] Aren’t these all symbols of luck?"
"[07:57] Ladybug."
Interactive Problem-Solving:
The collaborative dynamic between Elliott, Sean, and Scotty showcases different thinking styles, making the puzzle-solving process engaging and educational.
Theme of Luck:
The recurring motif of luck in the mega clue not only ties the puzzles together but also adds a layer of thematic depth to the episode.
Humorous Banter:
Light-hearted exchanges, such as Scotty's joke about his SAT scores and Sean's playful comments, keep the atmosphere fun and relatable.
