Smart less meow. Before we begin today's episode, I have a weather forecast. Today there is a 100% chance of weather. This is Clueless.
Sean Hayes
Nice. Clueless. I'm clueless. Yes. I am very clueless. Oh, the song is song over. Song is over.
Elliot Kaelin
Oh, the extended mix. I love it. Welcome to Smartless presents. Clueless, the puzzle podcast that never asks you to water its plants when it's out of town. I'm your host, Elliot Kaelin, and I'll have what she's having. Pause for laughter. Pause for laughter. Now please welcome the man who hasn't aged a day since this morning, Sean Hayes.
Sean Hayes
Nice. Hey, everybody. Elliot, such a pleasure to be back. This is so fun. I'm really excited. So thank you again, guys. One of the funniest people, my new funny friend who I love, John Gabris, is here with us today, and he's part of half of the Staying Alive podcast for Smartless Media. Brilliant actor, brilliant comedian, funniest all get out. I can't say the F word. I could, but. Please. Jon, hello. Thank you for being here.
John Gabris
Are you kidding? Thank you for having me. This is thrilling. Also, I love. I love getting an intro that you feel the need to live up to. So I'm gonna. I'm gonna be so.
Sean Hayes
I know.
John Gabris
Gosh darn funny.
Sean Hayes
It's like showing somebody a video. Like, check out this video. And then it just turns, like, you know, the. Like, reloading or. What is it called? Buffering.
Elliot Kaelin
Buffering. Buffering.
John Gabris
DMing with someone. When I get over there, I'm gonna give you the best sex of your life. And then you're like, okay, hold on. This doesn't always happen. It's warm in here.
Elliot Kaelin
Yeah, that's good. My intention going in was clear. There were factors. John Gabris, thank you for joining us from the Stayin Alive podcast. It's an apt podcast title, because I don't want to scare anyone, but last episode's cliffhanger puzzle has risen from the grave, by which I mean the end of the previous episode. Now, you have to solve it now before it bites us and turns us into puzzles. That's how zombie puzzles work is when they bite you, they turn you into a puzzle. The stakes could not be higher, so please listen quickly.
John Gabris
That's why you have, like, a Bead of sweat going down your head and you're going, no, I'm fine. I wasn't bit. The one guy in the movie, he's like, I'm okay.
Elliot Kaelin
Crossword boxes start appearing on his sleeve, and he hit his arm and he pulls his sleeve down. Nothing. There's nothing there.
Sean Hayes
Exactly.
Elliot Kaelin
So listen to this one. The cliffhanger was a word question that went thusly. What's unusual about the following words? Revive, Banana. Grammar. Voodoo. Assess. Potato. Dresser. Uneven. There is something unusual which can be done to all these words which we know backwards and forwards.
Sean Hayes
They all have double consonants. So, like two N's, two O. Like two O's in voodoo, two S's in accent, or two C's in Xs and two. Oh, wait, do they have more than two vowels? It seems like they have the same two consonants.
John Gabris
No, because revive only has two E's.
Sean Hayes
Yeah. Unseen. Dresser.
John Gabris
Oh, and two V's.
Sean Hayes
Yeah. Dresser. Yeah. They all have. They all have two sets of the same consonants.
Elliot Kaelin
Not exactly.
Sean Hayes
No, that is correct.
John Gabris
They all have a double of content.
Elliot Kaelin
They often have two sets of the same letter. But there's something else about these. There's something you can do to them, something you do to each of them. But I like that you're thinking about letters and the arrangement of said letters. What can you do to all of these words, which, again, I'll remind you, we know backwards and forwards. That is unusual that you can't do to most words.
Sean Hayes
It's unusually. Are they anagrams of another word?
Elliot Kaelin
Sort of.
John Gabris
Are they close to. You're saying backwards and forwards, which makes me want to guess palindrome in some way, but I'm trying to figure out, is there, like. If you remove the first letter, do they become palindromes?
Sean Hayes
No, no, wait, you can. I got it. I got it. This is very unusual for all these words that you can take the first letter of each word and put it on the N and it spells it the same backwards.
Elliot Kaelin
Yes, exactly. Very good. What beautif. Beautiful teamwork that was. So it was like you're trading off links and the chain of logic, but that's exactly right. Each of those words, you can take the first letter, put it on the back, and then when you turn it around, it's the same word again.
Sean Hayes
Levi.
Elliot Kaelin
Move the R to the end and it is now evivir. Banana. You put the B at the end, it's anana. B. Well, I can't pronounce them, but the.
Sean Hayes
Mirror of it is the same.
Elliot Kaelin
Yeah, exactly. Yes.
Sean Hayes
Oh, that's wild.
John Gabris
They're Missy Misdemeanor Elliot rules. You can flip it and reverse it.
Sean Hayes
Reverse it.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Sean Hayes
How do you know that song? Now I'm worried.
John Gabris
I'm 43, baby. I know.
Sean Hayes
That is so good.
John Gabris
I was grinding to that song in eighth grade.
Sean Hayes
Oh my God. I was grinding that to my 50th birthday.

Elliot Kaelin
Listeners, did you get the answer to that cliffhanger puzzle? If not, I'm sorry if you got bitten and are now a puzzle. But hey, maybe we'll solve you someday. Maybe you're even. Today's main game, it's called Odd One Out.
Sean Hayes
Oh yeah, that's good.
John Gabris
Odd One out. Which One's the odd one out.
Sean Hayes
Get out. Yes.
Elliot Kaelin
In today's Odd One out, the original members of Huey Lewis and the News are all getting together to eat dinner and catch up about the old times when it was hip to be square, as opposed to now, when it's hip to be hip, it's no longer hip to be square, it's square to be square. And they're dealing with that now over dinner. Unfortunately, this restaurant that they chose has a very strange policy about the number of personal possessions you can bring to the table. And it turns out each band member was carrying one too many things and had to leave one item that did not fit the same category as the other items at the coat check. So I will tell you, for each member of this group, the items they brought with them. You tell me the one in each group that does not fit in the same category as the others, that's the odd one out. Would you like.
John Gabris
I love a game where you don't really. I don't really know what's going on. I wrote down Huey Lewis in the News, and I'm realizing, like, that might not be a super important part of the game.
Elliot Kaelin
Not necessarily.
John Gabris
You never know.
Sean Hayes
Also, I love the effort, because I really do. Elliot's a genius, and I love all the buildup, but really, you just need to know which one doesn't belong.
Elliot Kaelin
Yes. This one doesn't fit.
John Gabris
Basically, it's kind of like that word problem from fourth grade where you're like, forget oranges and Bruno and the market. It's seven plus five. Yeah, give me that.
Elliot Kaelin
Really, all the information is right there in the title, Odd One Out. But we decided, you know, hey, why not bring it to Life? Bring it to Life.
Sean Hayes
I love it. I love Huey Lou.
John Gabris
What's a game show without patter? Let's get on.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly, exactly. It's just questions. One. Question number one. Let's begin the game. Sean Hopper brought these things with him, okay? Tape, dynamite, sushi, and fabric. Which item is the odd one out and why? Tape, dynamite, sushi, and fabric.
Sean Hayes
Okay?
Elliot Kaelin
And set aside how strange it is to bring sushi with you to a restaurant, okay?
John Gabris
Set aside the legal ramifications of bringing dynamite into a restaurant.
Sean Hayes
I know what it is. I know what it is. It's dynamite. Because the others are rolls.
Elliot Kaelin
Yes, very good. Others all come in rolls. Tape, dynamite, sushi, fabric. Very good. A roll of dynamite. I mean, you can make, I guess, like a belt out of dynamite, but that's not the same thing. You know, I don't.
John Gabris
I don't catch myself saying, I've. I've said, give me a roll of tape before. I definitely said, I'll take a sushi roll, But I've never once in my life said, hey, how many fabric rolls do we have over here?
Sean Hayes
Oh, you will. You're only 40. What?
John Gabris
Yeah, yeah, exactly. I got plenty of time. And so Tim Gunn sends me to Mood.
Elliot Kaelin
Question number two. Bill Gibson brought a treasure chest, headphones, a cigarette butt and a photograph.
Sean Hayes
Okay, say it again.
Elliot Kaelin
A treasure chest, headphones, a cigarette butt and a photograph.
John Gabris
Photograph doesn't fit. Cause the other three have body parts in their names.
Elliot Kaelin
Very good. Exactly right.
Sean Hayes
Nice. I didn't even finish writing him down. All right, good.
John Gabris
Me neither. I just had to get one for my ego. I was dying. I was like, sean's game, let him play, but do not get zero.
Sean Hayes
Wait, so, treasure chest, headphones, cigarette butt, and what else?
Elliot Kaelin
And a photograph.
Sean Hayes
Oh, a photograph. Oh, that's interesting.
Elliot Kaelin
Does not have a body part in it. Question number three. Johnny Cola brought a top hat, a thimble, a balloon and an iron.
Sean Hayes
Yes, I know.
John Gabris
What?
Sean Hayes
I already know. I already know.
Elliot Kaelin
Yeah, what is it, Sean?
Sean Hayes
No, go ahead, Johnny. You know what it is.
John Gabris
No, just do not pass go. Don't collect $200.
Elliot Kaelin
You get it?
Sean Hayes
They're all Monopoly little tokens except for the one. What is it? Except for the balloon. Balloon. Except for the balloon.
Elliot Kaelin
I've got the answer. I've got the answer. It's all this. Except. What was the answer again?
John Gabris
I know it. But you say the answer.
Elliot Kaelin
Yeah, yeah, but you're right. It was the balloon for exactly that reason. The others are all original playing pieces from Monopoly. Question number four. We're doing great. You guys are doing fantastic.
John Gabris
I'm learning all the news names. This is exciting.
Elliot Kaelin
There will be a quiz later about the other members of the news and. Yeah, but who they are. Mario Cipollina brought these items with him. A pool noodle, a dollar bill, free beer, and a massive star. And I'll give you a hint. You guys have been looking for a puzzle that involves this answer since the beginning of the game.
Sean Hayes
Massive Star. Ok, really? It's not an.
John Gabris
It's Massive Star.
Sean Hayes
Because why is.
Elliot Kaelin
And why is it Massive Star?
John Gabris
It's the only one without two sets of, like, pool noodles, Double O, double O. Dollar bill, free beers, double E, double E. Oh, nice.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly right. Since the beginning of the episode, you guys have wanted to have an answer that involves double letters. And it's like you put that out into the universe and the Universe answered. And there's nothing beautiful about that.
John Gabris
I'm not that much of a pothead that I was able to remember the first game from six minutes ago. I was luckily able to. I still have that in my mind.
Elliot Kaelin
And finally, for this game, question number five. Frontman Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News. He brought a cell phone, a door hinge, a matchbook, and a coffee grinder. Again, that's a cell phone, a door hinge, a matchbook, and a coffee grinder. Which object does not belong and why?
Sean Hayes
Yeah, cell phone.
John Gabris
I want to say. Again, I'm so caught up in the word of it all and not necessarily the categories of it all. But is door hinge a compound word? Because I think the first three are compound words. And coffee grinder is two words.
Elliot Kaelin
Door hinge is two words. You're right to be thinking about the words aspect of it, but it's not a matter of compounds or not compounds. But I like the way your brain is thinking. It's thinking very puzzily.
Sean Hayes
So cell phone is two words. Door hinge is two words. Matchbook is one word. Coffee grinder is two words. Right?
Elliot Kaelin
Yes.
Sean Hayes
Okay. Ooh.
John Gabris
Okay.
Elliot Kaelin
But as mentioned, that's not what it's about.
Sean Hayes
No, no, for sure.
John Gabris
So now, coffee grinder is two syllables each. The rest are each one syllable of each half of the word.
Sean Hayes
Oh, yeah.
John Gabris
For each half of the clue.
Sean Hayes
Yeah. Cell phone, door hinge, matchbook, coffee grinder. Yeah, what about that?
Elliot Kaelin
You know what? That's not the answer we're looking for, but let's play by George Stephanopoulos rules. It works. So I'll give it to you.
Sean Hayes
But it is Coffee grinder.
Elliot Kaelin
No, the answer is actually. The answer is actually cell phone.
John Gabris
Okay, wait, really? I don't know George Stephanopoulos well, but does he just cheat?
Elliot Kaelin
No, no, no. But your explanation worked for that answer, so I couldn't deny it to you. The answer is cell phone. The others all include the names of dating apps in them. Doorhinge, Matchbook, and Coffee Grinder. Whereas I don't think there's a dating app with cell in it just yet.
Sean Hayes
No, no, just yet. Just yet. Yeah.
Elliot Kaelin
I said to myself, I can't come up with an argument why they're wrong. So I have to say they're right, even though, technically they are wrong. Five, one out. Wait. The evening isn't over for either Hughie or his news. They've still got their post dinner mega clue question. Mega clue question. When the guys finished dinner and went to claim their items at the Coat check. It turned out the room was a mess and their things were nowhere to be found. Why? The items are the clue to the answer to that question. What do. And these are the items that you removed from each round. What do dynamite, a photograph, a balloon, a massive star, and a cell phone have in common?
John Gabris
Dynamite, photograph, balloon.
Elliot Kaelin
Balloon, massive star, and cell phone.
Sean Hayes
Are these all the things from Pixar's movie Up?
Elliot Kaelin
Oh, interesting. There's a balloon in that one. There's a photograph, and all humans are made out of cells. You don't see a star, and there's no dynam, and the movie is dynamite. So think about what is something that each of these things can do.
Sean Hayes
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
John Gabris
Oh, okay.
Sean Hayes
Oh, you blow them up. Yeah, they're blown up.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly right. They're all things that can blow up. That's why the coat check was a mess. It exploded. I don't know who to blame, but maybe the guy who brought the dynamite. That's my guess.
John Gabris
Yeah, I think it explodes. Someone's like, well, you're the one who brought a balloon. You're like, I think the dynamite guy's in more trouble.
Elliot Kaelin
No one knows exactly what caused this. Perhaps it was the cell phone. Well, listeners, did you do as well as Sean and John? If so, I'd like to tip my hat to you, but I can't because the rabbit will fall out of it. So why don't I just pull up my sleeve where I've hidden today's cliffhanger puzzle?
Sean Hayes
Nice. There it is.
Elliot Kaelin
The cliffhanger puzzle is like your own personal experiment in delayed gratification. We're gonna start this puzzle now. You'll find out the answer next episode. This cliffhanger is a Samesies. Samesies is our series of cliffhanger puzzles involving samesies. I'm gonna give you three seemingly unrelated things. You tell me what secret aspect makes them samesies. Ready?
Sean Hayes
Yeah.
Elliot Kaelin
The three things are, number one, beans, as in, pass me that can of beans. Number two, milk, as in the stuff that comes out of cows, cashews, coconuts, other things that start with C. And finally, number three, guts, as in the punchline to why didn't the skeleton cross the road? Because he didn't have any.
Sean Hayes
The guts.
Elliot Kaelin
Yeah, yeah, beans.
Sean Hayes
All right, so beans, milk, and guts. And what are we supposed to do with these?
Elliot Kaelin
What makes them samesies? What's the thing that connects them?
Sean Hayes
Okay, got it.
John Gabris
We have a full week or another day. How long is in between episodes?
Elliot Kaelin
What's your perception of time? Because the faster you move, the slower time goes. So if you can get to like the speed of light, you'll have as much time as you need to figure this one out. Yeah.
John Gabris
All right, good. I'll have to just, you know, mentat myself here a little bit, let my eyes roll back in my head and I'll solve it all.
Elliot Kaelin
Well, this episode has a beginning, it had a middle. Let's go for the trifecta and give it an end. But first, I'd like to thank John Gabrius for never giving us up or letting us down. Thank you. And I'd also like to thank Sean Hayes for never running around and deserting us. And I'd like to thank you, the listener, for never making us cry, never saying goodbye, never telling a lie, and never hurting us. Except for the saying goodbye part, which we're doing right now. I don't want to be too forward, but perhaps though, we could Smartless presents Clueless Again another time. Let me know. I'm your host, Elliot Kaelin and I'll be outside your window with a boombox until you say yes.
Sean Hayes
Oh, my God. The longest goodbye ever.
Elliot Kaelin
I was like, I'm going to do that song. And then I was like, this song is long and it's not even a Huey Lewis in the news song.

SmartLess Presents ClueLess: Episode 149 - Odd One Out (w/ Jon Gabrus) Summary

In Episode 149 of SmartLess Presents ClueLess, titled "Odd One Out," host Elliott Kaelin teams up with returning contestant Sean Hayes and guest Jon Gabrus to tackle a series of intriguing puzzles. This biweekly, bite-sized episode delves into brainteasers and conundrums designed to challenge listeners' quick-thinking abilities, all while fostering engaging and humorous interactions among the hosts. Released on May 1, 2025, the episode centers around the "Odd One Out" game and introduces a cliffhanger puzzle, maintaining the show's signature blend of wit and intellectual stimulation.
Introduction and Setup
The episode kicks off with Elliott Kaelin's quirky weather forecast joke, setting a playful tone (00:14). Sean Hayes humorously embraces the "clueless" theme, creating an immediate rapport with the audience (00:30). Elliott introduces Sean Hayes and Jon Gabrus, highlighting Jon's comedic prowess and his involvement with the "Stayin' Alive" podcast (00:43).

ClueLess Puzzle Recap
Elliott revisits the cliffhanger puzzle from the previous episode, emphasizing its importance and the stakes involved (01:22). The puzzle challenges listeners to identify what is unusual about a given list of words, a task that Sean and Jon attempt to solve collaboratively.
Solving the Cliffhanger Puzzle
The hosts analyze the words: Revive, Banana, Grammar, Voodoo, Assess, Potato, Dresser, and Uneven. Sean initially suggests that the words contain double consonants (03:01), but Elliott steers the conversation towards a more nuanced linguistic pattern. After some back-and-forth, they deduce that each word can be modified by moving the first letter to the end, resulting in a palindrome-like structure (04:01). This teamwork highlights the collaborative and analytical spirit of the show.
Main Game: Odd One Out
Transitioning to the main segment, Elliott introduces "Odd One Out," a game where the original members of Huey Lewis and the News must identify which item among a group doesn't fit (07:32). The premise involves selecting dinner items from each band member that breach the restaurant's peculiar possession policy.
First Round: Sean Hopper's Items
Second Round: Bill Gibson's Items
Third Round: Johnny Cola's Items
Fourth Round: Mario Cipollina's Items
Fifth Round: Frontman Huey Lewis's Items
Cliffhanger Puzzle Introduction
