Before we start, I should let you know we just got the floors done. So this is going to be a shoes off podcast today. If you need to keep your shoes on, you can always wait outside until we're done. This is Clueless. Clueless.
Ali Wentworth
Clueless.
Sean Hayes
I'm clueless.
Elliot Kaelin
Welcome to Smartless Presents. Clueless, the puzzle podcast that runs on pure brain power and some ethanol. Call me Ishmael, but I'm actually your host, Elliot Kaelin. But please welcome the man who has a PhD in puzzle solving from a very reputable Tijuana mail order university, Sean Hayes. Thank you for being here, Sean.
Sean Hayes
That's me. I picked up a couple things in Tijuana, but we can talk about that later maybe.
Elliot Kaelin
Off mic.
Sean Hayes
Yeah, yeah. Hi, Elliot. Thank you for having me today. This is so lovely to be here. And I'm with the gorgeous, lovely, talented, funny, smart, beautif, beautiful. Oh, it's Ally. Ally, hi. Oh, yes, yes. Ally, hi. Ali Wentworth.
Ali Wentworth
I thought you were gonna say. Oh, and Ali Wentworth is here.
Jason Bateman
Hi.
Sean Hayes
Same joke. Same joke. No, I meant every word of that. And thank you for being here. We're gonna have so much fun. You're sitting in front of your brand new. In your brand new kitchen, which is so gorgeous. Are you gonna cook tonight or what are you gonna do tonight?
Ali Wentworth
Thank you so much. My kids have asked for hot honey chicken with sushi rice and a big salad and some artichokes.
Sean Hayes
And you said no way.
Ali Wentworth
I said no. And then we're gonna order pizza.
Sean Hayes
Right? Wait, that sounds amazing.
Ali Wentworth
Well, you know I only cook for you, Sean.
Sean Hayes
I know. Please send it. Can you mail it to London?
Ali Wentworth
Well, you know I will. I've done it before.
Sean Hayes
I know. Ali mailed me spaghetti and spaghetti and a jar of spaghetti sauce, but the whole thing opened in the mail to open it up and the whole thing poured out of just spaghetti and sa.
Ali Wentworth
And Sean ate it?
Sean Hayes
Yeah, believe me, I ate it.
Elliot Kaelin
That's. You can just pick up the box and pour it right into your mouth from the box. That feels like it's more convenient.
Ali Wentworth
Well, it's the way Sean eats breakfast. Yeah.
Elliot Kaelin
It'S Good that we're learning so much about Sean's eating habits, because today is a historic day. Last night, clueless listeners went to the polls to vote on a matter of national importance, whether or not to reveal the answer to last episode's cliffhanger Puzzle. The campaigning was electric. The debates were dramatic, yet respectful. And voter turnout was the highest includulus election history. Which means some, because we've never done it before and we haven't even done it this time. It's all fictional, we're being told. Voting has finally closed in Hawaii, and we can confidently predict that the winner of the election is revealing the answer to the Cliffhanger Puzzle. We will reveal it today. And so, in accordance with the will of the people, I shall remind you that last episode's cliffhanger puzzle went thusly. I was a contestant on that old game show, Are youe Hot? The judges gave my face a four, my height a two, my chest a three. Based on these very disappointing scores, what would they rate my smile? If my face was a four, my height was a two, my chest was a three. What would they rate my smile.
Sean Hayes
Okay, here we go. So face, I was gonna say face is a four. There's four letters in face, right? But there's more than two letters in height.
Elliot Kaelin
So let me double check. Let me double check. Yes. Yes, there are more than two.
Sean Hayes
That's right. Uh huh. Mm.
Ali Wentworth
Five.
Sean Hayes
There's five.
Elliot Kaelin
Is that your answer, Ali? Yes, that is the correct answer. The answer is five. They give me a five notice. And why? How come? What would be the reason?
Ali Wentworth
I would prefer to keep that to myself.
Elliot Kaelin
So this seems like one of the most successful shot in the dark guesses that we've seen.
Ali Wentworth
Well, no, because smile is five letters.
Elliot Kaelin
That is true. We're looking for a different reason. 5 is the right answer.
Ali Wentworth
I know, Elliot. So let's leave it at that.
Elliot Kaelin
Let's not probe any deeper. I'll tell you. All the scores are based on the location of the letter E in each word.
Sean Hayes
I was going to say the E. I swear to God, I was going to say E. I swear to God I was going to say E. Doesn't matter.
Ali Wentworth
I got it right. Doesn't matter.
Elliot Kaelin
E is the fourth letter in face, the second letter in height, the third in chest, and the fifth in smile. So, Ally, excellent work.
Ali Wentworth
Thank you so much.
Elliot Kaelin
You were going to get there if. Allie, I have so much thrown. Just thrown a wrench into the works. I think you would have gotten it.
Ali Wentworth
Sorry. I'm smarter. I'm smarter.
Sean Hayes
You've been quicker and blonder and younger.

Listeners. Did you get the answer? If so, please stop showing and start showing on. And while you're puzzling out what that means, because I sure don't know, let's move on to today's main game. It's called Odd One Out.
Carl's Jr.
Odd One?
Elliot Kaelin
Which one's the Odd one Out? Get out. Indeed, this Odd One out is as many of our Odd one Out games are based around a band. The five members of the Spice Girls have agreed to reunite for a charity event in a haunted house very similar to a scene in the movie Spice World. They're going to perform and then spend the night. And if they can all stay until morning without getting scared away, the they'll win $1 million for their favorite charity. Each of them have arrived at a spooky mansion determined to make it through the night. Unfortunately, they all packed too many things, and each one needs to leave an item behind before coming in. Each Spice Girl brought four items. I'm going to tell them to you and you're going to tell me which one they should leave behind so that the other three things belong in their own category together. For example, if someone brought a mug, a thermos, a paperclip, and a chalice, what should they leave behind?
Sean Hayes
A paperclip. Cause you can't drink out of it.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly. The other ones are all drinking vessels and the paperclip is not. So you know how to play the game. It's odd one out. Odd one out, number one. And you'll be working together on this. Number one. Victoria brought cocoa, garlic, jelly and a kidney, which is the odd one out. Cocoa, garlic, jelly and a kidney.
Sean Hayes
Cocoa, garlic, jelly and the kidney. Cocoa, garlic, jelly, Kidney stone. No, kidneys are beans. Jelly bean, Kidney bean. Cocoa bean. Garlic, because it's not a bean.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly right. The answer is garlic because it is not a bean. Very good. Question number two. Emma brought a saw, a drill, a sander and a stake. S T A K E O S T A K E. Which is the odd one out?
Sean Hayes
A saw, a drill, a sander, and a stake.
Ali Wentworth
Oh, a stake.
Elliot Kaelin
And why?
Ali Wentworth
So the other three need to be plugged in. They need electricity.
Elliot Kaelin
You're right. The other three are power tools, whereas a stake does not use electricity. Very good. Very good. You got that one. And you remember you're working together on this one. So a win for one is a win for all.
Ali Wentworth
I got no help on that.
Elliot Kaelin
Question three. Mel B. Brought a walker, a turkey, a cross and a beam. A walker, a turkey, a cross and a beam.
Sean Hayes
A walker, a turkey, a cross and a beam. Like a Jesus cross.
Elliot Kaelin
Sure.
Sean Hayes
And a beam like a balance beam.
Ali Wentworth
All right. Well, first I thought things made out of wood, but then I was like, I don't think a walker's made out of wood.
Elliot Kaelin
Not a well made walker. No.
Ali Wentworth
No. So then a beam is just one long log, Right?
Sean Hayes
Right. But you can walk on a beam. You can walk with a walker. You can walk.
Ali Wentworth
Turkeys walk like a crosswalk.
Sean Hayes
But you would never want to walk with a turkey. You could stuff a turkey. You can stuff a.
Ali Wentworth
No, you can't stuff the rest of them.
Sean Hayes
You can try.
Ali Wentworth
I'm going to go with the turkey is the odd man out. The other three are things you'd find in a church.
Sean Hayes
By the way. That's true.
Elliot Kaelin
It's true. It's not the answer that we're looking for the answer. But I'm giving you half credit. I'm giving you half credit for imagination. The answer we're looking for is cross the other three. Walker, Turkey and Beam. They're all parts of whiskey brand names. Johnnie Walker, Jim Beam and Wild Turkey.
Sean Hayes
Oh, look at that.
Ali Wentworth
Oh, Elliot. I don't drink.
Elliot Kaelin
Yeah, I should have known. I should have known. This is the wrong contestant for this game. Let's move on to question four then. Maybe this will be better for your. For your very pure natural lifestyle.
Ali Wentworth
Yes.
Elliot Kaelin
So question four, Mel C brought sunlight, ice, thunder and nitro. Sunlight, ice, thunder and nitro.
Ali Wentworth
And nitrogen.
Elliot Kaelin
If the whiskey one was difficult, this one may also be very difficult.
Ali Wentworth
Oh, come on, really?
Sean Hayes
Sunlight? Well. Well, it has to do with superheroes, doesn't it?
Elliot Kaelin
Kind of. Kind of really? Not exactly, but similar. Yeah.
Sean Hayes
Yeah. Because Thor is the God of thunder and nitro is a. You know. Is that.
Ali Wentworth
I don't. No, yeah. Hercules is nitro. Uh huh.
Sean Hayes
No, Nitro is. Isn't that the Matrix character?
Elliot Kaelin
That's Neo.
Sean Hayes
Neo. Sorry, I'm gonna say nitro because thunder, ice and sun are all like gods and things like that.
Elliot Kaelin
That's a great. That's a great answer. I wonder if I should give it to you. It's not our answer. It's not the correct answer, but it's a really good answer.
Ali Wentworth
Don't give it to him. Don't give it to him.
Elliot Kaelin
Ally. Do you have a guess? Do you have a guess about which one it is?
Ali Wentworth
Yes, it is things that Superman.
Sean Hayes
Oh, that's interesting.
Ali Wentworth
Yep. Okay. I just trying to spur a little something in you.
Sean Hayes
So thunder. Then it would be thunder. Right. Cause nitro's a gas. Right. And sunlight is a gas and thunder makes gas and ice isn't a gas. Oh, but it could be a gas. Is anybody there?
Elliot Kaelin
I want to take Shawn's science class where sunlight is a gas.
Ali Wentworth
Yeah, me too. Me too.
Sean Hayes
The sun itself is made up of gas.
Elliot Kaelin
That's true. It's kind of burning hydrogen gas. That's true.
Sean Hayes
Yeah.
Ali Wentworth
Did you go to an Ivy League, Sean?
Sean Hayes
Yeah. Yeah, but it wasn't an Ivy. It's just a league.
Ali Wentworth
Oh, it was a league. A bowling league, I think it was.
Elliot Kaelin
The answer we were looking for was sunlight. Because the other three, Ice, Thunder and Nitro. Those are all American Gladiators. Those are all names of the American Gladiators, which are like real life superheroes. The look on Sean's face is just complete rejection of the entire premise of that one.
Sean Hayes
Yeah, I don't know about that.
Ali Wentworth
Yeah, we don't know about those things.
Elliot Kaelin
All right, well, I mean, I don't know what again, you didn't go to the right school if they're not teaching you the American Gladiators or the names of whiskeys. Yeah, that's true. Oh, wow. You should have gone to a much more fun school, apparently. Question number five. This is our final question. You guys are doing great. Jerry brought a lion, a globe, a mountain and a doorway. A lion, a globe, a. A mountain and a doorway.
Sean Hayes
I'm gonna say globe because the lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. She walked through a doorway, there was a mountain there, and there's the lion.
Elliot Kaelin
It's not the answer we're looking for. Is there a mountain in the lion and the Witch and the Wardrobe?
Ali Wentworth
Well, it's kind of.
Sean Hayes
It's kind of like in the woods.
Ali Wentworth
Just kind of a hill doorway is the one that doesn't belong.
Elliot Kaelin
And why is that?
Ali Wentworth
Because the other three are symbols of motion picture companies.
Elliot Kaelin
Exactly right. The other three are logos from movie studios. That's right. The MGM lion, the Universal globe, and the Paramount Mountain.
Ali Wentworth
Very cool. And thank you. I would drop my mic, but I need it for the rest of the show.
Elliot Kaelin
Please don't drop it. Yeah, and you don't want to hurt that new kitchen of yours by dropping a mic on it.
Ali Wentworth
No, I don't.
Tide
Odd one out. Get out.
Elliot Kaelin
Looking at the points right now, you've both done very well. It's 3.5 out of 5 so far. But we're not done with this game yet. How could we? The night's not over. The Spice Girls still need to spend that night in this haunted mansion. And that means there's a Mega Clue.
Ali Wentworth
Mega Clue question.
Elliot Kaelin
That's right. It's time for our Mega Clue. It turns out the Spice Girls were actually attacked by a creature in the middle of the night. They had to run away. Some kind of strange, scary, haunted creature. They're safe now, but if they had any one of their left behind items with them, they could potentially have held off the creature and won the prize. What was this creature that was after them that could have been stopped by one of the items they left behind? And I'll remind you, if you would like, what those items were. Would you like to hear them again?
Sean Hayes
Yes, please.
Ali Wentworth
A vampire.
Elliot Kaelin
Well, I didn't even have to remind you. You're right. It was A vampire. That's right. The left behind objects were a garlic, a stake, a cross, sunlight and a doorway. Because you have to invite a vampire in through a door, they can't go in on their own. You're exactly right. If they had kept any of those objects, they might have stopped that vampire and won the million dollars. Excellent work. I'm so happy that you got the vampire one. Right. That's the only one of the questions that I was personally invested in. Was the vampire one.
Sean Hayes
Nice, nice.
Elliot Kaelin
And what was it that. What was it that brought you to there ally so quickly?
Ali Wentworth
Steak and garlic were in my head.
Sean Hayes
Because she's going to cook dinner tonight.
Ali Wentworth
Yes, I'm going to cook a man.
Elliot Kaelin
For dinner to serve to a vampire.
Ali Wentworth
Yep.
Elliot Kaelin
Listeners, did you do as. As Sean and Allie?
Ali Wentworth
If not possible.
Elliot Kaelin
Not possible if you couldn't have done it. But if not, it's not your fault. These newfangled modern riddles, they just have too many buttons and gizmos. Not like in the good old days. Makes you nostalgic for the kinds of puzzles grandma used to make. She used to call them cliffhanger puzzles. The cliffhanger puzzle is like the puzzle equivalent of getting interrupted while watching a dvd and then you don't get around to finishing the rest of it for a few days. But in a fun way, just. And today's puzzle goes thusly. I heard they're making a new movie called Three Women and an Adult Baby. The women are played by Sydney Sweeney, Keira Knightley and Cindy Crawford. Who could play the adult baby and why? Again, there's a new movie called Three Women and an Adult Baby. The women are played by Sydney Sweeney, Keira Knightley and Cindy Crawford. Who could play the adult baby and why? You got it already?
Sean Hayes
Yep.
Elliot Kaelin
Wow, that was fast. That was alley vampire fast. Yeah.
Ali Wentworth
Go ahead, Sean, what you got?
Elliot Kaelin
No, we can't say it yet.
Sean Hayes
Well, I'm gonna wait till the next episode.
Elliot Kaelin
We'll have to wait till the next episode. Can't say it because that's all the game.
Ali Wentworth
Oh, then I got it. I got it.
Elliot Kaelin
Then as long as you don't have to say it now. You got it. Yeah.
Sean Hayes
Yep.
Ali Wentworth
Yep.
Elliot Kaelin
That's all the games we have today. But we've got just enough time in this episode for our regular cooking segment. It's called Clueless in the Kitchen, brought to you by Ali's new kitchen. Today I'll be showing you how to make a top notch episode of Clueless. First and take a great guest like the fabulous Ally Wentworth. Then Add just a pinch of Sean Hayes. SmartLess Presents ClueLess
Episode 165: Odd One Out (featuring Ali Wentworth)
Release Date: July 21, 2025
In Episode 165 of SmartLess Presents ClueLess, host Elliott Kalan teams up with regular contestant Sean Hayes and special guest Ali Wentworth to tackle a series of intriguing puzzles and brainteasers. The episode, titled "Odd One Out," delves into categorization challenges centered around iconic brands and pop culture references, all within a fun and engaging 12-minute runtime.
Elliott Kalan opens the episode with playful banter, announcing a "shoes off podcast" due to recently updated floors. This lighthearted start sets a casual and friendly tone for the episode.
Elliott Kalan [00:58]:
"Call me Ishmael, but I'm actually your host, Elliott Kalan."
Sean Hayes introduces himself humorously, referencing his "PhD in puzzle solving from a very reputable Tijuana mail order university," which adds a comedic flair to the introduction.
Sean Hayes [01:16]:
"That's me. I picked up a couple things in Tijuana, but we can talk about that later maybe."
Elliott revisits the cliffhanger puzzle from the last episode, where listeners were tasked with determining the judges' rating of Sean's smile based on given scores for his face, height, and chest.
Cliffhanger Puzzle Recap:
"I was a contestant on that old game show, Are You Hot? The judges gave my face a four, my height a two, my chest a three. Based on these very disappointing scores, what would they rate my smile?" [02:32]
After a brief deliberation, Ali Wentworth correctly identifies the answer as "five," reasoning that "smile" has five letters.
Ali Wentworth [04:04]:
"Five."
Elliott then reveals the underlying logic: the scores correspond to the position of the letter 'E' in each word.
Elliott Kalan [04:36]:
"E is the fourth letter in face, the second letter in height, the third in chest, and the fifth in smile." [04:42]
Sean humorously laments not arriving at the correct reasoning sooner.
Elliott introduces the main game segment, "Odd One Out," where participants must identify which item doesn't belong in a given set based on a specific category.
Elliott Kalan [07:21]:
"Which one's the Odd one Out? Get out."
The game involves scenarios where members of the Spice Girls must choose items to leave behind before entering a haunted mansion, with each item potentially being a clue to solving the subsequent mystery.
Items: Cocoa, Garlic, Jelly, Kidney
Solution:
Sean identifies "Garlic" as the odd one out because the other items are types of beans.
Sean Hayes [08:34]:
"Garlic, because it is not a bean."
Items: Saw, Drill, Sander, Stake
Solution:
Ali correctly points out that "Stake" doesn't belong since the other three are power tools requiring electricity.
Ali Wentworth [09:19]:
"So the other three are power tools, whereas a stake does not use electricity."
Items: Walker, Turkey, Cross, Beam
Initial Guesses:
Ali suggests "Turkey" as the odd one out, thinking the other items are associated with a church.
Elliott Kalan [11:07]:
"The answer we're looking for is cross. The other three. Walker, Turkey, and Beam. They're all parts of whiskey brand names."
Correct Answer:
"Cross" is the odd one out as the others represent whiskey brands: Johnnie Walker, Jim Beam, and Wild Turkey.
Items: Sunlight, Ice, Thunder, Nitro
Attempts:
Sean initially connects the items to superheroes, while Ali explores the idea of gases.
Elliott Kalan [13:18]:
"The answer we were looking for was sunlight. Because the other three, Ice, Thunder, and Nitro. Those are all American Gladiators, which are like real-life superheroes."
Items: Lion, Globe, Mountain, Doorway
Solution:
Ali identifies "Doorway" as the odd one out because the other three are iconic logos of major movie studios: MGM lion, Universal globe, and Paramount mountain.
Ali Wentworth [14:23]:
"Because the other three are symbols of motion picture companies."
Elliott introduces a Mega Clue related to the Spice Girls' haunted mansion scenario, where a creature attacked them. The task is to identify the creature based on the items left behind.
Mega Clue:
"They were attacked by a creature in the middle of the night. They had to run away. Some kind of strange, scary, haunted creature... What was this creature?" [15:06]
Sean and Ali quickly deduce that the creature is a vampire, correlating it with the items: garlic, stake, cross, sunlight, and doorway.
Ali Wentworth [15:35]:
"A vampire." [15:36]
Elliott confirms the correct answer, praising their quick thinking.
Elliott Kalan [15:35]:
"That's exactly right."
Elliott presents a new cliffhanger puzzle for listeners to solve:
Puzzle:
"I heard they're making a new movie called Three Women and an Adult Baby. The women are played by Sydney Sweeney, Keira Knightley, and Cindy Crawford. Who could play the adult baby and why?" [16:22]
Sean hints at withholding the answer until the next episode, while Ali teases having figured it out.
The episode concludes with a humorous cooking segment hosted by Elliott, titled "Clueless in the Kitchen," sponsored by Ali Wentworth's new kitchen.
Elliott Kalan [17:31]:
"First and take a great guest like the fabulous Ally Wentworth. Then add just a pinch of Sean Hayes... and serve directly to your ears."
This segment serves as a playful metaphor for creating an engaging podcast episode.
Elliott Kalan [00:58]:
"Call me Ishmael, but I'm actually your host, Elliott Kalan."
Ali Wentworth [04:04]:
"Five."
Sean Hayes [03:58]:
"There's five."
Elliott Kalan [04:36]:
"E is the fourth letter in face, the second letter in height, the third in chest, and the fifth in smile."
Ali Wentworth [09:19]:
"So the other three are power tools, whereas a stake does not use electricity."
Elliott Kalan [11:07]:
"The answer we're looking for is cross."
Ali Wentworth [15:35]:
"A vampire."
Episode 165 of SmartLess Presents ClueLess offers a captivating blend of humor, collaboration, and mental challenges. Elliott Kalan effectively engages listeners with his witty hosting, while Sean Hayes and Ali Wentworth showcase their puzzle-solving prowess. The "Odd One Out" game not only entertains but also highlights the trio's chemistry and quick thinking. The unresolved cliffhanger promises excitement for the next episode, ensuring listeners remain eager for more brain-teasing fun.
