Call Me Chris
Foreign.
Shane Topp
Hi, welcome to smosh mouth. I'm Shane.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And I'm Amanda Leehan Cantow.
Shane Topp
And. And today we have a huge awesome guest. We have call me Chris here today.
Call Me Chris
That's me.
Shane Topp
Thank you for being here.
Call Me Chris
Thank you for having me.
Shane Topp
You're our first non smosh guest.
Call Me Chris
Oh, really?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You're outsider.
Call Me Chris
So important.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You are.
Shane Topp
Yes. You're so important.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You're so important. So happy to have you here.
Shane Topp
No, we're stoked to have you here.
Call Me Chris
Oh, well, we changed a little bit.
Shane Topp
We're going to go through all the beatings there.
Call Me Chris
Change?
Shane Topp
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
Essex babes. Yeah, yeah, No, I do, I do. Thank you for having me.
Shane Topp
That's just.
Call Me Chris
I feel. Yeah, that's cool. I was just like hiding in here and I just made them do it.
Shane Topp
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We. We did walk. We did walk into the studio today. We turned on the lights and she was here. Very sc. That's what she yells.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Call me Chris.
Shane Topp
Just call me Chris.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Just call me Chris.
Shane Topp
Just call me Chris.
Call Me Chris
Okay. Okay, fine.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay.
Shane Topp
Before we started, I was telling you both about how today almost went really badly.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, I missed. Yeah.
Shane Topp
So we showed up here to the studio. I was getting my laptop out of my bag and I had it unfolded. I was like pulling it out and I was. But I was holding it with one hand like a pizza.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Oh, yeah.
Shane Topp
And then I slip and I drop it onto our concrete floor face down, and it lands and I pick it up and the screen is black and I. And some people were around, like, Courtney was nearby and she was like, is it broken? I was like, it looks broken. Oh, no, I think it's broken. And then I press a button and it's. It's fine. But the edges of my laptop, like, the metal parts, huge skids. Like it chunked some metal off the sides.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You need a protector layer thing on a laptop. Of course.
Call Me Chris
Protector layer? Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
A case?
Shane Topp
Yeah. Force field or something, man.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You don't have a case in your laptop. If you're gonna travel with your laptop, you need a case.
Call Me Chris
Do you have a. Do you not have a case on your phone? Are you one of those people?
Shane Topp
I have a case on my phone. Very slim.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Most people are very slim.
Call Me Chris
I don't trust those people.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
They're literally. They're just ready for death.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Or maybe they're the safest people.
Call Me Chris
Well, no, I know I'm clumsy. I'm just self aware. So I have, like, the thickest.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, me too. I have, like. I have an otter case.
Call Me Chris
Oh, yes.
Shane Topp
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Like destructive Top secret level.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Like, throw it against, like, I drop it. Sometimes in the morning, I'll pick up my phone. I don't know how it happens. It's like, I throw. I'm literally like, why? One time, I had a whole bottle of champagne. I don't know how that happened. I just went through it.
Call Me Chris
You're just giving it to a. Whoa.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I threw it. It was, like, two weekends ago. I literally was like. And it went everywhere. You know what?
Call Me Chris
I don't know why I don't hold a baby anytime soon. Please.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yes. And also, it's like, when you're over. This is getting really deep. It's like when you're on, like, a boat, like a ferry or something, do you ever go on the railing and go. Do you ever feel that impulse to throw?
Shane Topp
You mean, like the old. You're talking about the old lady at the end of Titanic throws the diamond. Oh, that's incredible.
Call Me Chris
She's like this.
Shane Topp
It's the best acting ever. Where she goes. She goes, oh, so true.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But you know, you feel that when you're, like, on the edge of a railing over a boat and you're just like, I feel like I'm gonna throw it just impulsively. Oh, yeah.
Call Me Chris
I feel way tighter. Yeah.
Shane Topp
Whenever I'm walking onto or out of an elevator, whatever I'm holding, my deepest fear is dropping into the cracks.
Call Me Chris
I do that. And on grates, on streets, I say this.
Shane Topp
No, not today, Pennywise.
Call Me Chris
Yes.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yes.
Call Me Chris
Oh, I like that.
Shane Topp
I have dropped. It was luckily just a pen. But another thing to be scared of is if you ever go to the gym and you're on the stair stepper machine.
Call Me Chris
Go to the gym. But.
Shane Topp
Okay, like the. The ones where the stairs.
Call Me Chris
Yes.
Shane Topp
Like, actually unfolds like a fucking Doctor Strange bell. No, I love them.
Call Me Chris
Like a StairMaster.
Shane Topp
Yeah, it's a StairMaster. But there's the ones that.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's like the climbing.
Shane Topp
No, but yeah, the one where the actual steps fold out. But I accidentally dropped a pen and it fell, like, into the machine. And I was like, oh, that's a new fear.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Why did you have a pen with you?
Shane Topp
Because I have my workout. I have my workout journal. I, I, he was.
Call Me Chris
He was writing.
Shane Topp
I. I write down. I. I write down my.
Call Me Chris
That's good.
Shane Topp
My lifting routine. I write down, like, the reps and the weight. It's something I started doing. It's been nice. And also, I write down, like, maybe my dreams.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Shane Topp
And maybe what I want to do with my fucking life.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's fucking Awesome.
Shane Topp
I bring my vision board to the gym and I.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's just a picture.
Call Me Chris
Like, you just put it in front of your Stairmaster and you're just like, yes, yes, it's gonna be me.
Shane Topp
And it's just pictures of wine and, like, learn Spanish.
Call Me Chris
I'm earning it tonight.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's like, when you're. That's like, when you're. I love that you a lingo owl.
Shane Topp
On my vision board.
Call Me Chris
Like, hola, como estas?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's like, when you're on peloton and they read off. The instructors read off people's names and it's like riding for donuts 5. Or it's like wine mama. Or it's like, will do for Cheetos.
Call Me Chris
And I'm like, I would never step on that. That's like.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's like their vision peloton is.
Shane Topp
You know, it just. Just occurred to me, Peloton is Twitch for stay at home moms.
Call Me Chris
Oh, my gosh. It is.
Shane Topp
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
That's amazing.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And I guess I'm a stay at home mom because I love my peloton.
Shane Topp
I really do.
Call Me Chris
I love that. Hey, whatever works for you. Yeah, I just go walk outside. I just can't be looking at a wall or a screen.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I know it's hard.
Call Me Chris
That's all I do.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's really hard.
Call Me Chris
Walk in the forest in Canada. That's awesome.
Shane Topp
I'm jealous.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
We live in the desert. Not much is going on here except for buildings.
Shane Topp
Yeah, there's a lot of buildings.
Call Me Chris
There's some nature.
Shane Topp
There actually are bears in la.
Call Me Chris
There are, right? Like, more.
Shane Topp
They're black bears. Small black bears that are up.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Towards, like, the big dog Angeles forest.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, they're big dogs.
Call Me Chris
Don't pet them, though.
Shane Topp
Have you ever seen grizzly bears? Oh, my.
Call Me Chris
Terrifying.
Shane Topp
Yeah, that's scary.
Call Me Chris
If you go a little bit more north from where I am. Huge. Just.
Shane Topp
And even more north, then you have polar bears. Then you're just done.
Call Me Chris
True, true. Yeah. They'll just eat you just for fun. And I bet them even scare that moose. Have you seen a moose?
Shane Topp
I have seen moose. Moose.
Call Me Chris
It's as tall as this ceiling.
Shane Topp
Like, they're as big as suv. They're huge.
Call Me Chris
They're huge and it's terrifying.
Shane Topp
You're just up in the woods and then you just decide, I'm gonna become huge on Tick tock. And then that's. That's what you're doing. You're hanging out with bears.
Call Me Chris
Exactly, exactly. No, but I actually do have to, like, walk around with a bear. Mace, There's a lot of bears where I am because I literally live in the forest. Like, I'm on.
Shane Topp
Like, you made a lean to. Out of wood.
Call Me Chris
Exactly.
Shane Topp
And you're playing Minecraft in real life.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, exactly.
Shane Topp
That's actually. That is my dream.
Call Me Chris
It's pretty. I have chickens.
Shane Topp
I'm extremely. You have chickens? I'm actually so jealous sometimes.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Like, do you get overwhelmed then being, you know, having to post all the time, like, when you're living in the forest, or do you have to go outside and take breaks?
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah. It's much like, when I'm home, I feel like it's easier to kind of take a breather and go into nature because that's like, my thing is that's how I can take a break and turn off my brain a little bit. But, yeah, I'm on the road a lot.
Shane Topp
I feel like you're always somewhere else.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah. Which is fun and I'm really lucky to be able to do that. But it's nice to just be home for a little bit.
Shane Topp
So it also has to be crazy. Cause I was so. When I found out you were gonna be on this episode, I was stoked and I was kind of, like, doing some research. But I was also just thinking about when we first had you on. To be completely honest, I hadn't heard of you. Yeah.
Call Me Chris
Fairbanks.
Shane Topp
Which is insane.
Call Me Chris
There's so many creators.
Shane Topp
Cause when I looked you up and I'm like, you have 50 million followers on TikTok and 10 million followers on YouTube.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's insane.
Shane Topp
But the amount of times that happens nowadays, I don't mean it as an insult when I'm like, oh, I haven't heard of you.
Call Me Chris
No.
Shane Topp
Because the amount of times I discover someone new and they have so many followers is insane. That's just how big the Internet is nowadays. And the Internet also puts us into different corners.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah.
Shane Topp
And we're going to talk about that in a little bit of, like, the different corners of the Internet that we're on. But I'm so curious because you really. You weren't like, an overnight success. I wouldn't say. But you did gain a huge following in a short amount of time.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Because you started on the Internet in 2020, or were you doing it sooner?
Call Me Chris
No, no, it was a 2020, like, April 2020, when, like, everything kind of shut down in Canada at least. And, like, I was doing hair, and then I had a salon and I had to shut it down. And then I was just bored because I was. I worked like, six, seven days a week doing hair. So, like, not doing something was like, I was going to, like, implode. So my brother told me to download TikTok just to consume something. And I'm not a huge consumer of, like, Internet stuff, so I was just like, I'm gonna try to make stuff. Cause I used to. I used to, like, make funny, like, vines and all that.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
You know, never famous or anything, but I was just like, I'll try it. And then it was probably, I'd say, like a month or two months when it started to gain traction.
Shane Topp
Wow.
Call Me Chris
And then it went from like a thousand followers a day to 10,000 to like a hundred thousand every single day for like, over a year.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And I was like, what were those first videos? Like, what were they?
Call Me Chris
At first, I was just kind of getting the hang of TikTok. And when in 2020, it was like, you'd have a sound and you'd lip sync and you'd put a caption, and you kind of make it your own. And there's a lot of that. At first.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah. Yeah.
Call Me Chris
And then like, a couple months into it, I was like, I really. I kind of want to try. Like, nobody even knew the sound of my voice because I was just doing all these lip syncs. I was like, yeah, I kind of want to just write, like, my own stuff, make my own characters. So I started with one character, which was like, the little kid, or actually, no, it was my Boston mom character. Because being a hairstylist, I have, like, so many different moms come through, and it's just. So. I have so many different characters.
Shane Topp
Just Amanda knows a thing or two about Boston.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, I'm from Boston.
Call Me Chris
Yes.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And I love playing Boston moms.
Call Me Chris
Right.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
They're absolutely my favorite.
Call Me Chris
And she's just like, I think I have to give a shit.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That burst where they just have no filter.
Call Me Chris
Exactly.
Shane Topp
Oh.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And yeah, so. And they also love death. Yeah, they love talking about death.
Call Me Chris
Totally. And she's like a wine mom, too. Yes.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Oh, Kendall Jackson. Chardonnay. Oh, they love talking about. That was Southern accent, but exactly.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. I was like, okay, Tom Brady. I've been doing the accent wrong.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I feel like Boston. Boston.
Shane Topp
We're talking about Boston.
Call Me Chris
Georgia.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Kendall Jackson. Chateaunet. Oh, it's Chateaunay. Kendall Jackson.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, you just gotta channel that.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You gotta.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, that's exactly what it is.
Shane Topp
Yeah, exactly.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Wow. I never knew that about you. That's amazing.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. So then it just spiraled. Now I have, like, I don't know, like 40 characters. I do. But then I did TikTok, and then I moved to YouTube. Cause I was like, if TikTok goes down. I didn't even realize it was a career to begin with. But I was like, I'm gonna try to expand this.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I love that.
Call Me Chris
Just in case.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yep.
Call Me Chris
Cause nobody else really was like, people. I was coming up with TikTok. I was like, I'm gonna go over here.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's smart.
Call Me Chris
And see what this is about. And. Best decision I ever made.
Shane Topp
That's so awesome.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Wait, do you do hair anymore?
Call Me Chris
I do my family's hair. They will refuse to go to anybody else. It's kind of nice once in a while.
Shane Topp
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
Let's do a Smosh episode where I do all your.
Shane Topp
Ha. Doing some research, and I did find out that you were a hairstylist before, and I. So I wanted to be. Just wanted to ask, honestly, like, what do you think? This is good.
Call Me Chris
Genuinely. I saw you today, and I was like, okay, your hair looks good. It looks like. I like this messy. Like, like, in a good way.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Chaos.
Call Me Chris
Like, it's like, I just. I woke up like this in the best way.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It does look good today.
Call Me Chris
Beyonce way.
Shane Topp
I put a lot of work into it. I didn't wake up like this.
Call Me Chris
I put in a lot more. No, I know you did. And I could look at it. And that's how I would, like, style gu hair. Like, just to make it messy and.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Like, I'm into that.
Call Me Chris
Unkempt a little bit. Also love the mustache.
Shane Topp
Thank you.
Call Me Chris
Working.
Shane Topp
It's. It's.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's indie.
Shane Topp
It's very.
Call Me Chris
Your hair is fabulous as well. I love your bangs.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay.
Call Me Chris
So nobody can pull those off. And really pull them off.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay.
Call Me Chris
Because they show your eyebrows. Your beautiful eyebrows.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Thank you. Because, okay. They were up to here. Really short. They were like, Rockabella Rockabelli baby bangs. And I'm growing them out, and I was telling Shane that my hair is in an awkward phase.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
So I like, what should I do? Should I split them and have them keep growing?
Call Me Chris
And that's the.
Shane Topp
Dude.
Call Me Chris
It's a look. It's a look. No, I know. It's like, you think it's in an awkward face, but I think it looks great right now, really. But I'm like, the same. Mine's in a weird phase. Cause mine was, like, edging on what yours looks like, like, a couple months.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Ago, which I love.
Call Me Chris
And then. Yeah, I love the short hair. And I'm like. I'm like, should I cut it again? Should I leave it so I'M like, growing it a little bit too.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's always in that. Should I.
Call Me Chris
And then one day, you're just gonna.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I'm just gonna. That's exactly what I did. It was down here. And then I just fucking. Boom. And then boom.
Call Me Chris
I know. I just slap right on my hair. It's fine. I love it. We all look fabulous today.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay. We all look good. I'm into it.
Shane Topp
I sometimes debate on it would take in the. In the pandemic or in the lockdown phase. I thought about getting a mullet. I wanted to do that, but then I was on Goldberg's, and they cut it, and I was bummed, and so I couldn't. I didn't have the option. But I thought about it.
Call Me Chris
You could pull it off.
Shane Topp
But nowadays, I don't know. I think my forehead's too big for a mullet.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No.
Call Me Chris
If you had what you have on the top of your head right now and just a little bit of wisp at the bottom, it would be. I'd like it.
Shane Topp
And I put a little ponytail, or just a little.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Just one braid. Like my cousin in Jersey who had a rat tail for basically his whole life.
Call Me Chris
Skywalker. Just like.
Shane Topp
Oh, yeah, Just that. That's solid. That's solid.
Call Me Chris
I think so.
Shane Topp
That's the Anakin.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, that's the Anakin. Or just do tips.
Shane Topp
Okay. Frosted tips.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Frosted tips.
Shane Topp
Like, early 2000s. Yeah, got it. I also sometimes think about just shaving it all off.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Oh.
Shane Topp
Actually, I think. Because I think I'm gonna inevitably be bald one day.
Call Me Chris
He'd look like a MMA fighter if you did. Not in a bad way.
Shane Topp
Maybe the mustache. The mustache.
Call Me Chris
Just leave the mustache.
Shane Topp
Because if they have the mustache, then it's like, oh. But he's not an MMA fighter.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Shaving is h. Literally. My husband shaved all of this, and now he just has, like, a Viking strip, and it's down to here.
Shane Topp
Whoa, whoa.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Who braids?
Shane Topp
Yeah, but he's six. He's six foot five. I think that looks cool. I think.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Guy with a. With a.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No. What if you did, like, a peaky Blinders cut?
Call Me Chris
Ooh.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You know what I'm talking about?
Shane Topp
No, actually. Yes.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shane Topp
Fully shaved on the side.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I don't know if that's. Yeah, I like that look.
Shane Topp
Okay.
Call Me Chris
I do.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay.
Call Me Chris
Love that. Okay.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay.
Call Me Chris
Noted.
Shane Topp
Do you ever miss having a hair salon?
Call Me Chris
Yeah, sometimes. It's, like, very therapeutic doing hair. I was, like, a blonde specialist, mostly. I mean, I did everything. But was it like your Highlight. When I say my salon, it's like a little ratchet salon in my parents basement suite.
Shane Topp
That's still cool.
Call Me Chris
But it's a salon.
Shane Topp
But you were doing your.
Call Me Chris
I was proud of it. Yeah. Yeah, no, it was. I was like, determined to always work for myself, so I did. I actually did lash extensions as well. On top of hair.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's amazing.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah, it was cool.
Shane Topp
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
I did like a couple years in university and I was like, don't know what I want to do. And I was like, I'm going to leave. I went to Asia for two months and my parents are really mad. And then I came back and I was like, I'm gonna be a hairdresser. And then they were even more mad. And then I started to do really well with it. And then they're like, fine. And then I.
Shane Topp
And then you're like, TikTok. And they're like, what's TikTok?
Call Me Chris
No, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. No. Until I, like, started to get. Or until I was like, hey, I can go buy my own house. They're like, oh, okay, then that's. That's fine.
Shane Topp
Okay, fine.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's when you're doing well in your thing. It's like, when I moved here, my mom was like, you're a dog walker. So you're picking up shit. You moved to LA to pick up dog shit.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And it's then when you're actually doing well and you're like, actually, I have a career in this. They're like, oh, that's good. I've always been proud of you.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, exactly. They're like, I never said that.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I never said that. And good for you.
Shane Topp
It took a minute, I think, for a lot of my family to understand this. Cause I, you know, I came out here to be like, tv, film, actor.
Call Me Chris
Totally.
Shane Topp
And so it hit a point. After six or seven years of being out here auditioning, working on TV and stuff, then being like, yeah, so I'm working on this YouTube channel.
Call Me Chris
Right. They thought it was a step down.
Shane Topp
So that's a website?
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
A website, yeah. Whose website? You're putting up videos on someone's website.
Shane Topp
What the hell?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Don't do that.
Shane Topp
Don't trust the Internet.
Call Me Chris
Exactly, yeah. When you say you make videos on the Internet to older people, they're like, mmm, what kind of videos? It's like.
Shane Topp
So I think it's really funny you talk about. You're. You're very big online. I mean, now. Now that I know you, now I've seen your stuff. And I. But still don't understand. No, I'm trying to figure out the website.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No idea.
Shane Topp
But I think it's funny that you mentioned that you're not. Or at least you weren't very online.
Call Me Chris
No, no.
Shane Topp
Like, are you not very online?
Call Me Chris
Well, let's say right before this, or like before all this happened, I was like, maybe once a year posting on Instagram, didn't look at Facebook. Like, I didn't care. I was one of those people that was like, it's so dumb. Like, you should. And then, and then all this happened. But it's kind of fun because it's not. It doesn't really revolve around me. Just, you know, like, because for me, I was like, oh, you just are self absorbed if you do this kind of stuff. That's not the case at all. I mean, sure, maybe for some people, but like, sure. I get to like, make stuff that makes me happy.
Shane Topp
You're just having fun.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah. So I mean, purpose. Yeah. And I like to make stuff and put it out there, but I am not. I'm not on it scrolling. No. Like, there was a period of time where it was. We all went through that. I mean, maybe some people are still in that tick tock or shorts or reels phase where they just go on for hours.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
But it, like, I mean, and I've always struggled with mental health, but it just doesn't help that at all.
Shane Topp
Oh. So I want to talk about our social media experiences and what we, what parts of the Internet we're on and what we're avoiding. And I, first off, just want to say I agree I was very similar to you in that before I got on Smosh, I never posted on anything. Disney made me make a Twitter account back in the day, which is still my Twitter account that I have.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Oh, that's so fun.
Shane Topp
But if you scroll back pre2015, when I joined Smosh, my only tweets were like, was that an earthquake?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Did anyone feel that?
Shane Topp
Earthquake, earthquake? Like, for years. It was my earthquake alert.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's awesome.
Shane Topp
And then Instagram, I never used. It was privated.
Call Me Chris
Right.
Shane Topp
I did not use that. And I had nothing else.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
And so I joined Smosh. I made a Vine account, started trying to make vines, but I struggled with Vine. TikTok's a lot easier for me. Yeah, vine is tough.
Call Me Chris
Six seconds was so like, I loved limiting.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
See, I.
Shane Topp
Did you make vines?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I made vines.
Shane Topp
I've never seen one of your vines.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Well, let's find the Internet, pull them up. No, I Used to make. So I made Vines with my bff, Steph Barkley.
Shane Topp
Oh, yeah?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah. She was big on Vine. I met her through Hannah. Hannah.
Shane Topp
Yeah. Also big on Vine.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I was doing a bunch of Instagram videos that we connected. Unlike you guys, I was actually like doing a bunch of Instagram videos, getting a bunch of characters out there for fun.
Shane Topp
You were too ahead of your time. Because that wasn't.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, that wasn't a thing.
Shane Topp
Instagram was not the hub yet.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No, it wasn't at all. And TikTok wasn't even a.
Shane Topp
It was musically.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Not even.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. I don't even know.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And then I. I met Steph and then we did Vines together and that's what kind of like gained his base following. And then I just started meeting people through her.
Call Me Chris
Oh, cool.
Shane Topp
Wow.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But I wonder if you didn't make me Internet.
Shane Topp
That's so funny that you were running in the same circles as Olivia and Courtney.
Call Me Chris
Oh, yeah, I guess. But.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But not though, because I had never.
Shane Topp
Met them, but I know you never met them, but that was like the same circles.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No, I know.
Shane Topp
So weird. I had no idea. I didn't think that you were at all. But you.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I thought that you were new anything. Woke up in bed and was like, good morning, Los Angeles. Good morning, Los Angeles. I have a gateway to the.
Shane Topp
I thought you were writing funnies in the papers.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I was writing comic strips. I had my first article in the newspaper in 1945. Shane.
Shane Topp
Okay.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No, I was cool. Shane.
Shane Topp
I know you're cool.
Call Me Chris
I never said your name.
Shane Topp
I'm just kidding.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I'm just kidding.
Shane Topp
I. No, but I'll be honest. I. I start. So I started. But it's always been a job for me.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Social media. When I post. And the reason my posts are always like, not serious is because in a way they are serious. I'm taking it seriously in just. I view it as a job. And it's why I. Sometimes I've been so bad about it lately. This year I've been really bad. TikTok. I. I posted a bunch in 2021. 2020. I started posting.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
And I was like, I'm gonna treat this like it's nothing and it's stupid and whatever. 2021, I started like every week I'd post like one or two and I was just like, whatever. I don't fucking care. I was not doing any of the trends. I was just doing shit.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Shane Topp
But I had several blow up and I gained a lot of followers. And the problem is I gained like, I Then got over a million followers. And then I. Then it became too serious, right? And then I was like, I'm no longer having fun because now it's. Now there's stakes involved and I've been so bad I need to get back into it. And I'm saying that this year, you.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Know, why aren't you post. See for me, I really had to take breaks. And when I go, here's the biggest thing for me. When I go on a trip, I am not on Instagram at all. I do not go on. I do not go on a TikTok. But I will say for me, I feel very similar. Is like when I post, I go on, I post, I share, I look at a couple things and I have a time limit on my Instagram. I literally have a time limit.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, I get that. I do the same thing with like YouTube videos I have. Like, if I post a YouTube video, I will look at the comments for probably like the first 30 minutes and answer as much as I can. And then I'll leave it. And then at night I'll set aside like another hour to just go through and like do that and then even sometimes the next day because I think it's important. But like you can't it's answer because.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It'S like all of them, it's your job.
Call Me Chris
That's part of the job. The, the community, the people are like the ones consuming it. Like, I need to see what they're saying.
Shane Topp
I do read all the comments. I. Yeah, I don't know if that's a good thing to tell you guys.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, that I'm reading the comments right now.
Shane Topp
Shane, listen to me. Shane.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay, but I feel like, as I feel like since we are. This is like our job and whatever I do find myself looking at things you probably wouldn't expect me to look at on my for you page.
Shane Topp
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
On my main page.
Shane Topp
Well, the for you page, you don't get to choose. Yeah, not really.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Not really.
Shane Topp
But I think it says a lot about people. And I am so curious because you are so big on TikTok, what type of content you consume on TikTok and how often are you scrolling through the for you page?
Call Me Chris
Not. Not that often anymore. Or like, I'll give it a chance but usually since I feel like since I'm not on it all the time, my. For your page doesn't really know me. And then it just kind of gives me the generic stuff or it gives.
Shane Topp
You what you were into like a month ago when you were scrolling A bunch. You're like, I'm a different person or.
Call Me Chris
Just makes me mad. Like, it'll just. Like a tarot card reading will come up and she'll be like. She'll be like, oh, like the ten of Pentacles. Like, you're lonely and. But he's waiting for you. He's like, just wait.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Like five more decks.
Shane Topp
The Jester. You're a fucking idiot.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, exactly.
Call Me Chris
And then, of course, I watch it all because I'm curious. And then the algorithm's like, she loves it. But other than that, it's usually the ones that make me happy are like, dogs. Anything with dogs. Yes, Anything like that. Or I love, like, true crime. So there'll be a lot of, like, this is like the most fucked up, fucked up story you've ever heard in your life. And this is how this.
Shane Topp
And you also love paranormal stuff.
Call Me Chris
Love paranormal stuff.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
So do I. Yep. Mine is like a lot of, like, ghost stuff. Paranormal. Mine's a lot of wild ocean animals, cotton nets that are saved. Oh, yeah, I've seen that. And so many kayak, paddleboarding, shark videos or like, whales and stuff, or whales everywhere.
Shane Topp
Whale talk.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
There's so much whale stuff.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, I've been on whale talk.
Shane Topp
Whale talk is what whale talk is. So any. Whenever you're served a certain, like, genre and it gets very specific, that's the part of TikTok you're on. So you might end up with a bunch of whales and that means you're on whale talk. Or for instance, last night I came across a sumo wrestler video and the top comment was, oh, I'm on sumo talk. Hell yeah. I want to stay here.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I'm definitely not on.
Shane Topp
So you need to engage. You need to watch. If you come across it, you need to watch it. You need to, like, comment. You need to engage with it and then you'll. You'll stay there. Yeah, I've been in and out of a lot of weird ones, but I'm. I want to. Okay. So more specifically, Chris, we can start with you. Yeah. The question I'll frame is this, but you can also give us the genres of TikTok. You're on. Who is the main character of your for you page right now? Who is the account or what is the thing that is showing up the most? Because I have a main character and I'm trying to actively get rid of it. Not. I don't hate the guy.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I'm just like, can you say no?
Shane Topp
I could. Well, I'll get to it in a second.
Call Me Chris
No, actually there's this one guy that I'm trying to escape right now. I don't actually know his name, but you know how there's always one song that's trending and, like, some people just hop on that trend and they. That's the only song they use the whole time. And it's like. I don't know if it's a Russian song or what. No, it's like. It's like. No, maybe it is the girl just.
Shane Topp
Don'T sing it too well.
Call Me Chris
Oh, it's. No, no, never mind. It's. It's like, I want Prada. Balenciaga. Or. Have you heard that song?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yes, Prada. Yes. Not what I'm thinking of, but I'm pretty sure.
Call Me Chris
And this guy, he just does like a. A stupid face with one filter and then another face with another filter, and I cannot escape him.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No.
Call Me Chris
I watch it because it's kind of satisfying to watch, but I.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's why you can't escape.
Call Me Chris
But I don't.
Shane Topp
I don't like it. That's a whole other phenomenon on TikTok of people who find a single thing that they do and they. They get so much footage from that, and they just do it over and over and over again.
Call Me Chris
Yes. You're gonna get followers or, like.
Shane Topp
But it's gonna die out. It never lasts for more than a.
Call Me Chris
Month or even a month. Yeah.
Shane Topp
And then you're right. It's a week.
Call Me Chris
It really is.
Shane Topp
You realistically have a week.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
How long?
Call Me Chris
It's probably been like a solid almost two weeks, I'd say. And I'm just like, I can't.
Shane Topp
He's gonna disappear.
Call Me Chris
So terrible. But I'm like, I can't wait to see you disappear.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Like, I can't wait to see you disappear.
Shane Topp
It makes me think of. Did you get served? Because this was a big case of it. The older guy, he'd always be wearing, like, a button up, like Checker.
Call Me Chris
Oh. Eating the food.
Shane Topp
And he would drop. He would pour a bunch of food, and then he'd do the like.
Call Me Chris
Yes. The. Yes. And then it would be steaming. And then he'd just go and burn.
Shane Topp
His tongue, burn his mouth. And then he blew up. I saw him recently. His videos are getting like 10,000 views.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
What? That's what inevitably happens.
Call Me Chris
That's why you got to diversify, people.
Shane Topp
It's the life cycle of a sun.
Call Me Chris
Yes.
Shane Topp
And a TikTok star. Actually the same. I love that you could look at it. Of the supernova and then it collapses down to a red dwarf. It's all the same. Wow. Yeah. Boom. Okay, so you have this guy.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
This guy who's going to disappear soon.
Call Me Chris
He's going to. I think so.
Shane Topp
Okay.
Call Me Chris
He's probably gone. I probably could go on my. Well, actually not.
Shane Topp
That is what happens if he finds out you are acting.
Call Me Chris
I'm sorry, but just try something else. Okay.
Shane Topp
Do a different thing.
Call Me Chris
Do something else for your own sake.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
So wild that we get served these.
Call Me Chris
It's so weird.
Shane Topp
It does suck when it's also a funny person, but they have a trend that they get known for. Do you remember the guy who. He would stuff his. He would wear the orange suit and he would stuff his pants to make him look like he had a huge butt and it was the weekend.
Call Me Chris
Oh, my gosh. Yes.
Shane Topp
Yeah. He's. Josh, I think, is super funny. He's a really funny guy. But if. Unless he does that thing, people don't watch it. People watch.
Call Me Chris
I know.
Shane Topp
I love that.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Dude, you just unlocked memory.
Call Me Chris
Right. I forgot about that. I always watched them all. I was like, this is.
Shane Topp
There was. It made me laugh every time. And occasionally he'll come back and be like, all right, I'll do the hit.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, exactly.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And everyone's like, yeah, yeah. Okay. Wait. Do you remember the guy who did the Dora the Explorer thing, who had the backpack? Like, my backpack?
Shane Topp
I think that was your.
Call Me Chris
For you, Paige. I don't know.
Shane Topp
I think that's for you.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
My free page is crazy, but it was. It was a guy, and he was wearing a wig and he wore a door Dora the Explorer backpack. And he had, like, really bad, like, green screen.
Call Me Chris
No, I know who you're talking. Backpack. And he was like, yes, okay. Exactly. You know what I'm talking about. I do, I do, I do.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And I was like, why is this man chasing me?
Call Me Chris
Yes. No, exactly. And even, like, coming up on TikTok, I would see, I came up with a lot of people because a lot of people started exactly when I started.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
And people had that one thing that they did. And I was kind of trying a bunch of stuff, but I started to be like, do sketch comedy. But I had certain characters. And I was like, ooh, I don't wanna get put in this box. Cause people are like, I love that character. Like, I had the one with the tiny hand or whatever. And people were like, bring her back. And I was like, no, no, no. I'm gonna give you this one today. I told my audience. I was like, no, no, no. You get this, and you're gonna like this. So I shove new content at the people that. And then they accepted it. So anytime I do something crazy and new, it's okay.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yep.
Call Me Chris
So like any creators out there, just. Just do it. It's not gonna do good probably the first time, second time, third time, but they'll get used to it. And then you're not pigeonholed, trapped.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You're not trapped in that one character that you're.
Call Me Chris
Exactly.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Then you're sick of doing it and then you. Exactly.
Call Me Chris
And I don't regret any of my characters.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Exactly.
Call Me Chris
So many of you.
Shane Topp
Cause a lot of people blew up initially similar to you, but then they fade away. I don't feel like many tiktokers successfully go over to YouTube like you have.
Call Me Chris
Not a lot. And I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but I've. I tell all my friends that are on like Tick Tock and short form. Like, I'm like, go to YouTube. Like, just. And I was so scared too, for some reason. Like, I feel like all of us that started, they're like, I'm not going to be good enough. Like, I don't have the right camera, but I'm like, I made. I'm on my phone for like the first and like, you just got to do it. But yeah, it's. I don't know why people just like that hit like those. They know they'll get the views on Tick Tock hit where it's like, I was like, not struggling, but like for months on YouTube I wasn't getting like, it's anything.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's harder to get. But on YouTube than.
Call Me Chris
Way harder, but way more rewarding in like every way, shape and form.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I think, because you have. You have people, you have fans who are there for the long haul. They've stuck with you.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
They're there for your progress and they're not just there for like the quick laugh.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. No, my. Yeah. My following is. It's. They're amazing. They're so positive. Like, I'm so lucky.
Shane Topp
Like, your brand is very positive.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
I try to keep it that way for sure. I try to make it revolve around that. But I'm like, I've been very lucky with it. And they're always like, do something else. Do something new. What do you want to do? And I'm like, that's all right. Like, it's just like, that's awesome.
Shane Topp
Meanwhile, our fan base. Fuck you.
Call Me Chris
Love it. Keep it positive. Keep it right.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Read all the comments.
Shane Topp
The comments are going to be so bad. They probably like, no, I love our following. Our following and me have a weird back and forth. We make fun of each other. I love that they mostly make fun of me.
Call Me Chris
That's good.
Shane Topp
Yeah, that's good. There's gonna be a lot of another banger. Another banger by Shane Topp from iCarly. In these comments we have inside jokes.
Call Me Chris
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. No, those are always the best.
Shane Topp
Though your for you page doesn't sound that bad.
Call Me Chris
No, it's not that bad.
Shane Topp
It sounds pretty good.
Call Me Chris
Sometimes I'll get like the ones that have like 0 likes and it's just.
Shane Topp
Oh, I scroll past those. Yeah, sometimes I'm scared cause I don't want to see a dead body.
Call Me Chris
Sometimes I'll give a chance a dead body. You don't know if it's.
Shane Topp
If it hasn't been viewed by anyone.
Call Me Chris
It's true.
Shane Topp
You don't know what it's.
Call Me Chris
Sometimes the algorithm hasn't caught it yet. Ooh, that's scary.
Shane Topp
That's why I just like. Nope.
Call Me Chris
Or like you come across those weird ass lives.
Shane Topp
Oh, the lives are.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Oh, the lives are. I don't actually like watching lives.
Call Me Chris
I never watch lives. But like sometimes you get caught. Especially the. You go on D.C. ones.
Shane Topp
Dude, Courtney. Courtney can do such a perfect impression.
Call Me Chris
I saw her TikTok. I actually just did a video where I reacted to your. Some of your guys TikTok. And I did the. Or I did the one where she was like, oh, hi. And she's like doing the npc and I was like, this is awful in the best way.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's so bad.
Call Me Chris
It's so good.
Shane Topp
Popcorn. So good.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yes, I understand it.
Shane Topp
I don't understand it. No, I don't understand those people make.
Call Me Chris
So much money too.
Shane Topp
I know.
Call Me Chris
Apparently.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
What's the deal with that? With the people who are like just doing the NPC stuff?
Call Me Chris
Yeah, because like when like a rose pops up on screen on TikTok, then they're like, oh, a rose.
Shane Topp
Here's the thing. I understand the performers. I understand why you do it because you're making money. I don't. I'm not even saying anything mean about these people. I'm just saying I don't understand what people get from paying money to do this.
Call Me Chris
That's where I'm at as well.
Shane Topp
I think I'm like, why are you doing it? It's like I just would want to talk to someone who does it.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, I agree.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I think it's a controlling thing.
Call Me Chris
It's a controlling thing, but I think it would be like, better if you're like, hey, if you, you know, send me a rose or whatever, then I'll. I don't know. I'll take a shot. Maybe not a shot, but, you know, like, it'll make them do something rather than just do the.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I don't really understand it. It's one of those videos that I watch where I feel like my. My soul is on a. On a. On a different planet. Like, it's leaving me slowly going like.
Shane Topp
I feel like I'm dying.
Call Me Chris
No.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You know when you watch something so weird, you're like, yeah. Remember Salad Fingers back in the day?
Shane Topp
Oh, yeah, that was great.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
When I watched Salad Fingers and my. My soul went.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, that was pure nightmare fuel also.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's what I feel like I watched first on YouTube that we watched. So that ignited that weird.
Call Me Chris
It was like. It came back.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, exactly. But when I watch that, I truly don't understand it because it's not something I can connect to at all.
Call Me Chris
No. At all. Yeah, exactly.
Shane Topp
Amanda, who's the main character of your for you page?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Well, mine's very disjointed. I feel like it's very weird. It's either like, whale talk, I guess.
Shane Topp
Is now what I realized.
Call Me Chris
Maybe a whale.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's definitely animal saving stuff. A lot of rescue dogs.
Shane Topp
Me too.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
A lot of rescue dogs. On, like, we found this dog on the side of the road. And then it's like, takes you through the journey. But then there's one that actually I don't want to get rid of. But it also makes my life really hard, is like, it's just the back of a woman's hair, and she's wearing this beautiful sundress, and it's her in her kitchen, and it's like French music. And it's like how she changed her kitchen or what she's baking today. And it's like, let her be doing aesthetic tiktokers. And it's like, baking.
Call Me Chris
And I'm like, honestly, bless those people, because I do, like, come across those actually. You know, one of my really good friends, Ben, he lives in BC, and BC's beautiful, but he always starts this video is like, do you want to go on an adventure with me? And he's like, too bad, you're coming. And then he takes you through this beautifully aesthetic hike with views, and it's.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Like, oh, see, I love. I love that.
Shane Topp
Have you ever gotten served? There's a guy who lives out in the middle of the woods. He has a mustache.
Call Me Chris
In Canada.
Shane Topp
It must be in Canada. It's this guy. He starts every single one.
Call Me Chris
So sweet.
Shane Topp
Well, hello, buddy.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Hello, buddy.
Shane Topp
We're going to be today. We're going to be making some soup.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
So first what I do is I get out my big pan. I love my lovely big pan. And it's. It's. You're just kind of like. At first, I'm always like, all right. I don't know if I'm all right. I'll listen.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
No, he's. I think he's in Alberta. I've talked to him a couple times.
Shane Topp
That guy is so, so sweet.
Call Me Chris
But those.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Victoria. When I went to Victoria. Oh, my God. Biking through Victoria was unbelievable.
Call Me Chris
That's why I can't leave, man. Yeah.
Shane Topp
Oh, yeah. I wouldn't.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's stunning.
Shane Topp
Don't come down.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's why.
Shane Topp
Don't come down here, that's why.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
When I watch the women who are like, my heart, like, it gets sore.
Call Me Chris
Like, I'm like, yeah, yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And then I'm like, I want a vintage home in the English countryside. I said it to my husband, and he was like, what are we gonna. What are we gonna do there? You're gonna get so bored, Amanda.
Call Me Chris
You sold twice. And you forget about it.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And I watch a kid falling, and I'm like, yeah, that's my favorite thing. I watch people falling all the time.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. As long as I'm falling.
Shane Topp
Oh, so that's also on your. For you page.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, that's the thing. It's very disjointing.
Shane Topp
So it's just like, hello, and here's how I redecorated my. And you just cut it over to a kid getting kicked in the ball.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No, I don't like that. I don' Skating accidents. I like. Like someone, like, trying to take a picture, and then they're like, yeah. And then people nurse.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shane Topp
Or like the, like, Scooby Doo. Like, scramble.
Call Me Chris
Like a kid falling in a snowsuit. Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Where they're just like. Or the parents that are just trying to take a picture, and then they fall really hard and the waves. That shit.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. I saw afv.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Like, classic America's Funniest One.
Shane Topp
Exactly. I saw one where it got. I would get served. This guy, he has, like, clearly, maybe it's a fart machine. Maybe he's just genuinely able to fart like this. But he'd be out in public, and he'd have a mic near, I love him. And he'd be walking around, and he just rips New York massive farts. Yes. But there's one where he rips a massive fart in. This old guy starts laughing so hard he falls over.
Call Me Chris
Wait.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I watch his videos all the time. And he lifts up his leg and then the girls will go like this. The girls will be behind. They're like, yeah.
Shane Topp
Oh, my God.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And he's so big. He's like stretches.
Call Me Chris
Like, I couldn't do that.
Shane Topp
It's. No, it's. Whenever I come across it, it's my favorite video.
Call Me Chris
I love him.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I've watched so much love that shit.
Call Me Chris
So good.
Shane Topp
Your for you pages still overall sound way better than mine.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. So, yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
What's yours?
Shane Topp
Your main character? I. I have tried to stay just on silly fun TikTok, but I have been all over the place.
Call Me Chris
Oh, yeah.
Shane Topp
I have ended up. Over the years, I have ended up on prison TikTok several times.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
What?
Shane Topp
Oh, yeah. People making prison tiktoks in prison. Really Cool.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Wait, what's prison TikTok?
Shane Topp
Prison Tik is where prisoners in prison get phones that they. I'm guessing that they. The guards don't know they have probably. And they make videos in their cells and just whatever. And it's very entertaining.
Call Me Chris
What?
Shane Topp
But you're just kind of like, oh, my God, this is such a. This is a look. This is a look into something we technically aren't.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
TikTok is going to change now.
Shane Topp
Yeah. I've also ended up on drug cartel TikTok.
Call Me Chris
Whoa.
Shane Topp
Where they're digging tunnels or they're. They're driving like both a lot of cash and stuff. I've ended up. And the comments are always the best part of that. People are like, holy shit, what did I do to end up on drug cartel Tik Tok?
Call Me Chris
Right.
Shane Topp
So that stuff.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Is there a drug cartel in a background?
Shane Topp
There's a. There's a Tik Tok for everything. Yeah, there really is. And you will end up there. But lately this year and why I think I haven't been as into TikTok is because my page is not as funny.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
I've ended up. I've ended up really hardcore on weightlifting TikTok.
Call Me Chris
Oh, okay, cool.
Shane Topp
And it's. It started and it makes sense because I would come across like an instructional one.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
We'd be like, here's why your shoulders feeling right. I'd be like, oh, hell yeah.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
And I'd watch that. But now I start getting into the memes and into the like culture of weightlifting. Tick tock.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's like, shut the up. You want to lose some weight.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Or just.
Shane Topp
Just like Weird bros doing. Doing weightlifting memes or whatever. And so there's a couple things that I'm the main character of my for you page. I don't even know if he has a TikTok. And I think that's why he's showing up a ton. Is this guy named Sam Sulek. And he is amongst this corner of the Internet. This guy is a superstar. People know who he is. He's becoming my for you page. Isn't his content my for you page? Is other people clipping his content, putting it up or people talking about him that every couple tiktoks is someone being like. Like a podcast where they're talking about him.
Call Me Chris
Right.
Shane Topp
Or a clip from one of his videos. I think I know he has a YouTube page where he just posts daily. Like him working out. But what's funny about this guy, I wish that we had like a cap in here. He wears a baseball cap really tight over his, like, face where you barely see his eyes. He has like long curly hair and he is gigantic. I think he's only like 21, though. Super young.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Fake hair. Is it attached to?
Shane Topp
It's not fake hair. It's not fake hair. It's real hair. But he is absolutely gigantic. He's definitely on steroids. Like, it's just abnormally huge. But he's always just talking about working out and he's not.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It doesn't.
Shane Topp
As far as I know, there's been nothing toxic or like messed up because he's only talking about working out. He's always completely out of breath. And it's just a clip.
Call Me Chris
I'll scroll, I'll go back to my channel.
Shane Topp
You're actually so close. I will scroll and it'll be a clip. And he's at like a plant fitness on a thing on like a chest fly machine. And he'll just be like, you know, here's the thing. You'll do like, you'll do chest fly. You'll do it like 10 times. I'll do 10 reps. I'll just blast him out. But, you know, it's really all you need to do is do one. And if you just do it and you do it right, that's all you need to do. It's just one. What? And that's. These are his videos.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
All it is. Have you seen him work out? Because I think he goes to the gym and sets.
Shane Topp
I've seen him. Hey, yeah, he's actually. I've seen him work out and he's people.
Call Me Chris
You work out.
Shane Topp
I've seen him work out. He's insanely strong. Like, there's one where he's just like. He's like, okay, I'm about to do incline press. I've got one plate on each side. One plate is, like, a lot of weight for an incline press. And he's just like, you know, this is like 5% because I'm trying to warm up with as little effort as possible. And then he. And he goes. And he's just like. He's just, like, doing this, like. Like it's nothing. And I'm like, that is a lot for me. And he's insanely strong. And then it got revealed that he was a diver in high school. And so there's suddenly a clip of him at a public pool doing a perfect, like, triple flip into the pool gorilla. Literally like that.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No.
Shane Topp
And what's. No. The funniest thing about this guy. And I don't. I haven't really done research on him. It's just what I've been.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Is he's at a different gym in every single clip I see. He's never at the same gym.
Call Me Chris
This guy's got lore.
Shane Topp
I know, man. I am. I am so curious.
Call Me Chris
We're going to be one of the tiktoks of you talking about him now.
Shane Topp
I'm going to end up for you, Paige, talking about this guy.
Call Me Chris
This is why there's so many situations. I hope to God he's figured it out.
Shane Topp
I hope to God there's nothing bad about. There's. He seems to be completely innocent and chill and just a guy who loves to work out.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
But I get a lot of. I get a lot of it and a lot of weightlifting. TikTok is very wholesome.
Call Me Chris
Totally.
Shane Topp
You know, a lot of guys are very. It's very body positive, and it's very, like, supportive.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And I love, like, hip stretching. Well, there's of, like, different hip openers and stuff.
Shane Topp
There's a lot of mobility work. Ends up on my for you page. There's also the guy. I forget his name, but he. There's also that guy who stitches anyone who's filming themselves at the gym and is rude to anyone at the gym. Yes, I know that guy. It cuts to him and he's wearing a cap that's, like, barely on his head, and he's just like, yes. Yeah. It's like, he's like, the gym is a place for positivity and for us to be there for each other. And if you're going to be upset that someone. That if someone's walking past your video. I'm sorry. This is a shared space.
Call Me Chris
Yes.
Shane Topp
And it's. That's the type of wholesomeness.
Call Me Chris
He asked if I wanted to work out with him, and I was like, I'll have coffee, but I'm not. I look like I'm wearing a workout outfit right now. I look like I'm gonna run.
Shane Topp
I don't know what you're talking about. We walked into our green room and you were lifting dumbbells.
Call Me Chris
That's. I mean, yeah. Like, on my own time.
Shane Topp
You know what I'm saying?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, but not on video. She's in the forest just lifting.
Shane Topp
Yeah. You don't need to lift weights.
Call Me Chris
I literally. I do chop wood.
Shane Topp
Do you get Lumberjack Guy?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I love Lumberjack Guy.
Shane Topp
Every person.
Call Me Chris
Thorin, get off my. For you page. Okay. Get off it. I've talked to him a couple times before, but, like, he's. He's got it down, too, where it's like, some people can't do the same thing all the time.
Shane Topp
He can.
Call Me Chris
You can do this.
Shane Topp
Well, he does different wood.
Call Me Chris
He does do different wood.
Shane Topp
I saw him cutting a eucalyptus tree.
Call Me Chris
Yes, very. It's educational.
Shane Topp
Yes. To learn about different kinds of wood.
Call Me Chris
Does cherry.
Shane Topp
Sometimes he takes his shirt off.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah. Those are my favorite.
Shane Topp
Those are good. It's very funny. I've heard people talk about him at the office where they're like, oh, my God, I love Lumberjack Guy. And then I'm like. I'm like, okay, okay. And then I scroll and I'll come across him and I'll be like, I love Lumberjack. I understand.
Call Me Chris
You can't not watch it.
Shane Topp
I understand.
Call Me Chris
Sometimes after he cuts the wood, he has the audacity to say, good girl. What is that, sir?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I know.
Call Me Chris
Stop that.
Shane Topp
Stop that.
Call Me Chris
I think.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I don't finish the video. He's also a tree.
Shane Topp
Without getting aroused, he's fully aware of what he's doing, and he takes his suspender.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay. I think I never finished a video because I've never heard him say, good girl. I don't know if I like that.
Call Me Chris
No, I. No, it, like, don't do that. No, don't, don't. Wait.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Wait a second. You. You chop wood?
Call Me Chris
Yes, ma'am.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Chopping wood is really hard.
Call Me Chris
I grew up camping a lot because we. We didn't have a lot of money growing up.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yep. So you can't.
Call Me Chris
So our vacation. Our vacation was surviving in the woods.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Ditto.
Call Me Chris
But I have. I love it. I like that.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
We camped a ton. It's the Best.
Call Me Chris
It's the best, best thing to do with your kids. It's just like it grounds you. I feel like it hums you a little bit. Everybody should go camping at least once.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Everybody.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Now I have like little survival skills. We had to go to like survival classes too.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Shit.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Yeah.
Shane Topp
Do you ever watch Alone? Oh yeah, that's my favorite show.
Call Me Chris
And they always come to Canada.
Shane Topp
Yeah, they're always in Canada. They're like, we're gonna go to the most God forsaken place where I live. Canada.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
They don't go to Alaska or anything? No, they do.
Shane Topp
They've gone to Alaska. Yes.
Call Me Chris
To like the Arctic.
Shane Topp
They've gone to Mongolia. They've done Patagonia. No. I'm obsessed with that.
Call Me Chris
It's so good. And then you look at it and you're like, I could do that. And then you're like, no, you can't.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You got naked and afraid.
Call Me Chris
No, no, I don't really. I don't like.
Shane Topp
Stupid, stupid show.
Call Me Chris
Dumb. Why'd you even bring it up?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Dumb. You should.
Shane Topp
Amanda, you can leave.
Call Me Chris
You can.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah.
Call Me Chris
But alone is like, it's crazy because like they probably the hardest part is them just being alone. Like it's not even survival.
Shane Topp
Oh yeah.
Call Me Chris
That's not.
Shane Topp
Being in Canada is. Psychologically, it's awful. They have a hard time there.
Call Me Chris
Terrible.
Shane Topp
I start talking this. I'm struggling.
Call Me Chris
I'm always alone. I just have my dog and my ex.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I've never seen Alone, but I, I. One of my favorite shows. What is that Alaska show?
Call Me Chris
Oh, there's 48 surviving below zero.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Oh, below zero. Why did I say 23 degrees?
Call Me Chris
I don't know.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
98 degrees.
Shane Topp
The Nick Lachey show.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Below Zero is so good. I was obsessed with. What is her name? She's so amazing. She got attacked by a bear and like they literally. It ripped out her hips.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And she has like.
Call Me Chris
Dude.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah. She has Fox Friends.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
She is amazing on Below Zero. She lives alone in a compound.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You would love it. She's a badass.
Call Me Chris
There's a guy that went on like Joe Rogan. He was on Below Zero as well. And yeah, he just lives out there by himself. Built his own cabin and stuff. Like it's cool.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's crazy. That's arctic. That's.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, that's northern Canada as well.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Holy.
Call Me Chris
I think that's Yukon or Northwest Territories. Nobody lives in Northwest Territory.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I've been to Yukon. Have you? Yeah. So I did. Victoria. I did. Did you do like the Alaskan cruise or something? I Did the Alaskan cruise. I do not like cruises whatsoever. But my mom wanted to do it. And the best part was, honestly, Victoria and the Yukon. Yeah, the Yukon. We went to this town and it was like a very sleepy old town. And it was.
Call Me Chris
Everything north is beautiful.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But Victoria, we rode bikes.
Call Me Chris
It's beautiful.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It was stunning. Saw so many bears. It was beautiful.
Call Me Chris
Oh, yeah, Alaska was great too.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
We saw a bunch of whales.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Whale talk, man. This is why my kids.
Shane Topp
I love whales. Now we're back to whale talk.
Call Me Chris
But I don't understand the people that are like, oh, whale. And they go up in like a clear kayak and then they're just like. And it's always a white guy. That's my page. Why are you doing that?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's my page. It's a clear kayak and a white dude.
Call Me Chris
And then the tail like comes down, he falls out and I'm like, how did it happen? I hope it eats you.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
What are they doing out there?
Call Me Chris
I don't know. What are they doing?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And also sharks. Like when they're paddle boarding by sharks, it's like, it's like, mark, Mark, watch out. Mark, watch out. The sharks just like. And then they always fall off.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. The ocean's not okay, man.
Shane Topp
No.
Call Me Chris
I'm so scared of the ocean.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Oh, I love the ocean.
Call Me Chris
Oh, you do? I mean, I love it, but I'm. I'm healthily as scared of it.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I'm very scared of it. And I scuba dive.
Call Me Chris
Oh, that's.
Shane Topp
I'm scared of it. So I go as far down as.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I'm scared of it.
Call Me Chris
But she faces her fears.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
When you dive though, it's totally different than when you're on top of the water.
Call Me Chris
Yes.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
When you dive. I have dive first.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, that's different.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You can dive with sharks and they are just. They're more curious rather than if they're looking up at you and you're like.
Call Me Chris
Blah, blah, on the water. Exactly. Whereas when you're. I like being in it more.
Shane Topp
So.
Call Me Chris
But then that's scary too because like I always hear. I mean, I listen to all these like horror story podcasts and it's like the people that get like, what's it called?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
The bends.
Call Me Chris
The bends.
Shane Topp
Oh yeah.
Call Me Chris
You can avoid air bubbles and all that.
Shane Topp
No, people are scared of sharks when actually just the ocean itself is dangerous.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You should be be afraid of the ocean because it's really scary. Currents.
Call Me Chris
Currents are scary.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Currents are super. I've dived in a current and it's really overwhelming. Like you should be Afraid of the ocean.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But it is something that my mom taught me at a young age. She was very intense about facing your fear. Like, I got certified when I was 13 in it.
Call Me Chris
Oh, amazing.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And I was very scared, but it was. We had this test that we had to do when we got certified. You basically had to tread water in this place called Shark Ray Alley in Belize in Amber's Cay. That's where I got certified. And it is a kind of like a weird sandbar where there are fucking stingrays this big.
Call Me Chris
Oh, no.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And Nerf sharks everywhere. And they just, like, circle around you, and you have to tread water for 20 minutes. That was, like, part of our test. So you could get used.
Shane Topp
So you're not scared of them?
Call Me Chris
Oh, no.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But Nerf sharks don't have teeth. They just have suckers.
Call Me Chris
Oh, okay.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But.
Call Me Chris
Okay.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, I guess it is scary, but. Yeah, but the kayaking.
Call Me Chris
No, no, no. Yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Bear kayaks that.
Call Me Chris
Only in a lake.
Shane Topp
No, lakes are.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
What's down there.
Call Me Chris
I don't know. That's stagnant.
Shane Topp
Honestly, what the hell are you.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But lakes. Murky water. What the fuck?
Call Me Chris
Stagnant water scares me.
Shane Topp
We've talked about TikTok. We've talked about oceans, bears, and lakes. I want to come back to you talking. You said earlier that you have 30 characters about ballpark.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. 30, 40.
Shane Topp
I'm not sure what are. I didn't realize that many because I. I've seen. I've seen Chad. You brought Chad on to Smosh. What are some of your favorites from over the years?
Call Me Chris
Well, Chad is definitely one of them, for sure. He's just like.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I love Chad.
Call Me Chris
That one guy that you've dated or had to deal with, like, in high school or whatever. He peaked in high school for sure. Riley's an og. She's like my little kid character that I always do. And people get so mad at me if I didn't say she was. But she's just like a mischievous. Like, she's kind of like Stewie Griffin in a little bit, you know? And then Boston Mom, Janet, she's.
Shane Topp
Could I hear the Boston Mom? Would you be able to.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Boston Mom?
Shane Topp
What's that? What's your Boston. You don't have to.
Call Me Chris
It's like. No, no, it's just like a really. It's like a really subtle accent. Like, it's like. I'm trying to think of what to say. What do I say?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yes.
Call Me Chris
What should I say?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I always have a key word when I jump into a character.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Yeah. Usually I Say Boston. Like, I said Boston.
Shane Topp
Boston.
Call Me Chris
Boston accent. Get a cup of coffee. Like. Like, I just touch on that. It's monotone. She's like, riley, shut the up. Like, I can't do it. And she's like, this. This deadpan. Like, I can't even deal with you right now. Like, it's just too much. And she's like, always.
Shane Topp
That's so accurate.
Call Me Chris
And then, yeah, that's the depart.
Shane Topp
There's so many.
Call Me Chris
And I'm, like, obsessed with accents. So I just. My characters. I was like, ooh, I. I love doing, like, a Russian accent, and I come from, like, a German family. Russian fan. So I was like, I'm going to throw in a Russian character who, like. Like, she's always on the precipice of, like, she could be a spy, but, like, she doesn't say anything. And she's Janet's girlfriend. Cause Janet had, like, a messy divorce, and I made. I was like, I want to have a lesbian couple. Yes. So I was just like. So I have, like, this Russian character, and she's, like, super suave and, like, really sexy, and, like, she's. She's somebody I wish I could become. Like, that's what I love. And then she has two kids, Misha and Sergey, who are with. And then they have a cousin, Boris and Svetlana. And then Janet has a twin sister. Like, this is, like, I've expanded into, like, this weird, like, a multiverse, a cinematic universe. It, like, gives me chills. I'm so. I get so excited when people come up to me and they, like. They, like, like these tertiary characters that only come on, like, once every, like, 20 episodes or whatever. Or, like, I have, like, a German artist who, like, was just at this, like, whatever, this museum, and he makes the stupidest art. Like, I. I duct taped a banana to, like, a grate like that. And he's like, oh, this is my art. Like, it's priceless. I only got my one name, and it's Gunther. So it's just like, I don't know. I could go on forever.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's like you're doing long form based on, you know, us two characters, and it builds. You're literally doing long form.
Call Me Chris
It's kind of like a Family Guy or something where it doesn't need to really be connected.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You don't need to watch every episode to get where they're going.
Call Me Chris
Exactly. It's cool that people go back. Exactly. The people can go back and watch it all the way through, and it'll make sense. Like, oh, Janet met Katrina and. Like this.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah. Or they can jump in and they.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, exactly. So it's kind of fun for people that have watched since the beginning. They get, like, all the little Easter eggs that I put in and stuff.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's so fun. I didn't know that you were building it like that.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah. And that's okay. Like, I kind of like that. People either know it or they don't. And then my YouTube is just a completely different space, which is really fun, too. Like, I can just be. It's just me. Right?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Right.
Call Me Chris
It's not care. Well, I do some skits here and there, but it's more just.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Right.
Call Me Chris
Just me, which is really cool. So.
Shane Topp
So if I go and I need to catch up on the entire lore, that is going to change my for you page.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. It'll just be me, dude.
Shane Topp
The next time I see. The next time I see you, I'll be like, hey, so what happened with.
Call Me Chris
Misha and Sergey and Courtney when they did the seance? I don't understand how they died.
Shane Topp
Is she a spy or.
Call Me Chris
I'd like a murder mystery five part. Have you ever.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Have you ever thought about, like, having an animator animate all those characters and you voice them?
Call Me Chris
I went through all of that, man, with, like, networks. I had adults. Adult Swim wanted to pick it up.
Shane Topp
Like, oh, my God.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, it was like. It was crazy. And then I went like, it was YTV and Adult Swim, but it was more of, like, I wanted to be more adult. But then why. Or they wanted to. To change it so much, and it was like, it's going to take two years. And I was like, I could just do this on my own if I wanted to.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You could literally hire an animator, and.
Call Me Chris
I would just do it on YouTube by myself.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, you would.
Call Me Chris
That's so. But yeah, that's definitely. That's something I've been thinking about, like, a lot. And it's an option, but I'm doing, like, other big projects, too. Like, I've written a movie with, like, my editor, and, like, we're gonna just do that and just do it on our own.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
So.
Call Me Chris
Awesome. And probably go on tour with it and then eventually put it on YouTube. Like, it's just so. It's just so cool what we can do. Like, and just. It's insp it out and it's so much less time.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's inspiring.
Call Me Chris
It's a little bit more effort on your part, but then it's like, it's all yours. You wrote it. You did all this Stuff.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Control it. You hire who you want. You edit it, you. You fund it. You do whatever you need to do. You don't, like, sell your soul for it.
Call Me Chris
Exactly. And that's why. And, like, adult, like, I got good deal. Like, I could have. I turned down really good deals, but it's just, like, if they're gonna change it that much, protected your art, and.
Shane Topp
You'Re just having fun.
Call Me Chris
And I'm just having fun. Exactly.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I was like, this is my little baby. Y. Yeah. You always need to protect your art. Especially. Especially ones that come from, like, joy when you're writing for it.
Call Me Chris
It was like a coping mechanism for me. Yeah. So I'm like, no, no, no. This is like.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
No, keep that.
Call Me Chris
Exactly.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I just think animated. I just. That's so funny. Cause I just think listening to all these characters, it would be so fun to see them all in, like, almost like a friends kind of scenario. Like, one cafe that they all hang out in, and then they all go to.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. I. I wrote 10 episodes, and it's crap. I still want to do it. And it starts with, like. Sorry, I'm getting so off topic.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Oh, I love it.
Call Me Chris
Okay. Yeah, we were supposed to. It was like. It starts with Janet and Riley in a car from Boston going up to Canada. They're gonna go to, like, a Bible belt border town. And. Cause Janet just got divorced. And then that's where they meet. Just this barrage of characters. And she starts working in the mall as a hairdresser. Chad works at the Foot Locker place. And, like, it is mall is the.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Best place to be.
Call Me Chris
I was like, I still really want to do it. So you reminded me of that. So thank you. I love that I got to bring it back.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I'm really, really inspired by that.
Shane Topp
That is so cool how much you. Because literally, we've used this podcast as a means of motivating me to write.
Call Me Chris
Oh, good.
Shane Topp
Yay.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Mainly just to motivate Shape.
Shane Topp
I'm using this selfishly to try to motivate me to get stuff done.
Call Me Chris
That's good.
Shane Topp
I think we have a little bit of time left. Left. We asked you if we wanted to all try to pitch a bunch of new characters.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, right. Okay.
Shane Topp
Just dumb, stupid characters. So we could throw them out Here we have a last, last little bit. Cap this off. We could all take turns and just throw out characters.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. You guys go first, because I didn't even come up with anything.
Shane Topp
We could elaborate.
Call Me Chris
Do it on the fly.
Shane Topp
Do it on the fly. It's probably gonna be better than us or Then. Or at the very least, at the very least I could pitch some of these characters and you could let us know what you think.
Call Me Chris
Okay. I love that.
Shane Topp
Cuz I haven't made a new character in a minute. I have like the chosen dumpster wizard, but I haven't. Oh my God. I was there, man. So, okay, here's a character that I. I want to do and I think this is a very legit one. Guy who drinks yerba mate.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You mean Spencer?
Shane Topp
Yerba mate? Have you heard of yerba mate? You ever heard of yerba mate?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's basically like.
Shane Topp
It's cuz we live in la.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Any energy drink drink.
Shane Topp
It's like a tea though.
Call Me Chris
Okay.
Shane Topp
It's a tea. It's a tea. It comes in these yellow cans. You'll see it now. You'll start to notice.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, now I'll see it everywhere.
Shane Topp
And there's a type of person who drinks yerba mate.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It kind of reminds me of the guy on my for you page who is a human Tarzan.
Shane Topp
Yes.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
The guy who's like the human Tarzan who plants trees.
Call Me Chris
They're always super chill, like revolves around it.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
But I think this guy maybe isn't chill because he has too many yerba mates.
Shane Topp
I think he's chill though. But there's like a. I just mean there's a mindset to person who drinks yerba Matt.
Call Me Chris
Okay.
Shane Topp
They typically like the outdoors. Spencer's a kind of twist on. On them.
Call Me Chris
So what's the attitude?
Shane Topp
I think the attitude is so it ties in. I kind of wrote this as a secondary character, but it's the same guy which is shirtless guy on a hike.
Call Me Chris
Okay.
Shane Topp
And that's a guy. And that guy drinks yerba mate is kind of just. It's just very confident. Like he loves nature, but he's made nature his identity.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shane Topp
He's kind of like. It's. There's just like a vibe. They're the ones that when you're walking through the woods, you come across them and like. Like, how's it going? Good day, huh?
Call Me Chris
Like jean shorts and they're short back.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
And they always call out. They're like. You see that, that bird up there? It's kind of crazy. Like they're actually going extinct. But it's really cool. Do you want to see? I found a vantage point. And you're like, I am.
Call Me Chris
I can't breathe right now.
Shane Topp
They're also the ones that like. You got some switchbacks up there. Pretty tough.
Call Me Chris
But it's pretty muddy up there after.
Shane Topp
There it's smooth sailing to the peak.
Call Me Chris
Like, high top. Converse.
Shane Topp
Yeah. So chill.
Call Me Chris
Just like, he lives there, man.
Shane Topp
Yeah. I love that they're so positive, but you somehow kind of hate them.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Always.
Shane Topp
Oh. So I'll bring this up next week as well. Pinata surgeon.
Call Me Chris
Yes.
Shane Topp
Come on, hardcore guy. Think George Clooney in er, but he just gets pinatas. And he's. Maybe he's at a kid's party and they break the pinata and he's just like. Oh, yeah. Like, he's like, come on, give me something. We're losing him.
Call Me Chris
All the kids are freaking out.
Shane Topp
We're losing him. We're losing the three musketeers.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
The kids are like, get away from our pinata.
Shane Topp
What are you doing?
Call Me Chris
Want the candy?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
We want the snacks.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, that's awesome.
Shane Topp
I brought the. Okay. I. I actually. This is a character I actually really want to do, and I think I'll do it on. Try not to laugh at some point. Just. I want to play Stephen King, but I want to be Stephen King. And he just. He kind. Talk about. We were talking about this. We're gonna. Never mind. I. I know it's. We talked about with Olivia, but that's. That's in the future.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay.
Shane Topp
Yeah, yeah.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That podcast in the future.
Shane Topp
I want to play Stephen King. But he's. He is always pitching. Why? Everything's spooky, and he. I think he can't. Like, that's kind of his thing. He's just, like, a little too into it, and it's not even. It's not even right. Like, talk about. Talk about your day. Like, talk about what you're gonna do. Talk about, like, what you did this past week.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Lunch after this.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Gonna eat lunch. Gonna grab some coffee.
Shane Topp
But what if the. What if the coffee actually has poison in it?
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's good. I like that. Spooky.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I love that he makes every. That. That's an. That's a grounded character, in my opinion.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, that's almost just like.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, but what if the chair started talking and eating your way?
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Right.
Shane Topp
So you have a date on Friday. Yeah. What if she turns out to be a witch? She's actually gonna steal your soul.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay, but I wanna.
Call Me Chris
I like this.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I want to put him with. I want to put him with someone who's just like, yeah, man, she could be a witch. Like, she could be great. Just a stoner not understanding it at all. Maybe he's with the Yer Mate.
Call Me Chris
I was gonna say put him with that Guy.
Shane Topp
That guy. That guy's like. That guy's like, I'm thinking about going up on a hike tomorrow. He's like, what if you. What if you accidentally get lost and then kidnapped by a lady who's a fan of yours? She breaks your ankle.
Call Me Chris
That's the plot of a movie.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Is that Misery?
Shane Topp
Is that a book? Oh, wait. I already had that idea. Oh, shit. He gets fucked up when I already.
Call Me Chris
Had the idea of the dream. Yeah. Damn it.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You should do those two together.
Shane Topp
That's great.
Call Me Chris
I like that a lot. I like that a lot. I love his books, too. That's great.
Shane Topp
Me, too.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I love that. I kind of feel like you have a lot of connection to the East Coast.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, right.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Is it cause of Canada?
Shane Topp
Canada, The east coast just wraps up up into the north, stays the same.
Call Me Chris
I'm on the west coast because you're.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
On the west coast of Canada. But, like, Maine, Boston, like, yeah, yeah.
Call Me Chris
And then the. Yeah. Newfoundland first Newies are just Irish people, basically. Those are where, like, the true Canadians are. They're like, what are you ask. What are you doing? What are you going about? Like, that's how they talk. Like, they talk. You're like.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
They literally sound Irish.
Call Me Chris
How you doing?
Shane Topp
Welcome to Canada.
Call Me Chris
Like, no, that's lit. Literally what? They talk.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Literally. What are they talking about?
Call Me Chris
They're talking about that. Like, they talk like this. I can understand them. But if you were just to come to Newfoundland, you'd be like, are they in Ireland?
Shane Topp
Is that where the Keebler elves are?
Call Me Chris
Yes.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
We're gonna have to work on that. Guys, hear me out. Keebler Elf.
Shane Topp
Just out, but. Blasted Sigs. Keebler Elf, but he's just. All right, I gotta make some more cookies.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I kind of love that. I kind of love.
Call Me Chris
That's great.
Shane Topp
Great. Wow.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You have. You have. Those are good.
Call Me Chris
Those are good.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Those are good characters.
Shane Topp
King 1 was my favorite.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, that's great.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, I love that one.
Shane Topp
Oh. Oh, Actually, I wrote. I'll have this. I wrote two more. I have Mickey apologizing for some, like, recent controversy.
Call Me Chris
Mickey Mouse.
Shane Topp
Mickey Mouse. Like. Like some sort of Mickey, like, controversy. And he just starts off in this video, and he's just like, the past few days have been extremely difficult for me and my mental health. I've been working on myself, and I think the best answer moving forward is, I've talked with Goofy, I've talked with Donald, and I think I'm gonna take a step away from the screen for a minute.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I fucking love that.
Shane Topp
And they ask Goofy. They ask goofy to comment on. He's like, oh, gorsh. I don't know what to say.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's actually really good, the way.
Call Me Chris
Just the upper register. Yeah. Oh, I just liked it. That's perfect. That's great.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I love that.
Shane Topp
I had one other character, and I wrote Amanda and I wrote.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
What?
Shane Topp
Don't be mad. I thought this would. This is a Kind of funny. This isn't true. This is a. This is a archetype. This is an exaggeration. But it's Amanda hearing a really bad idea and being like, I love that.
Call Me Chris
Yeah.
Shane Topp
Oh, my God.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
That's what you did to me earlier.
Shane Topp
Oh, my God. I love that. That's such a. That's so. That's such a good idea.
Call Me Chris
Let's just backtrack. I think. Stay with me. I think that maybe if we just don't do that, but, like.
Shane Topp
Wow. Chris already has a perfect Amanda impression. No, it's not true. You're a very sweet person, and it's not. You're not lying. That's what I've learned.
Call Me Chris
Sugarcoat a little bit for feelings.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's not good, though. No, it's fine, because I am. The thing is, when you are from Boston and you are seen as a Mass hole, I've had a lot of people, like, you've got anger problems, so when you. When you get older, you overcompensate. And when I was teaching improv, actually, it's funny, the biggest note I got was like, so, hey, you can't tell everyone, good job. Because it's not. It's not always good job. And I'm like, yeah, but isn't positive reinforcement better than, like, I don't know where you were. I don't know what was happening. And I'm disappointed.
Shane Topp
Amanda, I don't want you to change.
Call Me Chris
No, no, no.
Shane Topp
It's great.
Call Me Chris
I like that, too.
Shane Topp
Everybody in the comments, let them. Everybody in the comments, let Amanda know she's doing a great job.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I'm not mad.
Call Me Chris
No.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I come in here next. I'm like, terrible idea.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. Next. Yeah. Stupid ass.
Shane Topp
You just have a Boston accent. Next episode.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Dumb. Honestly, you get. You have acting like a boss.
Call Me Chris
Why'd you even come in?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Why'd you even fucking come here?
Shane Topp
Don't you fucking talk to me.
Call Me Chris
No, no, no, no, no. Get off.
Shane Topp
Don't you talk to me this way. I'm a Keebler elf. I make cookies. I make cookies that people enjoy.
Call Me Chris
That's like a cigar.
Shane Topp
Yeah. Hey, I'm running things around here. I Make those circles with the fudge lines on them. People love them.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Ron, stop fucking talking to everybody outside. Get back inside the house. Honestly, Ron, you're being like a fucking piece of shit.
Call Me Chris
Ron, it's the best Boston accent is just all like in one song. It's all one word.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, it was so crazy. Like, you went outside. I was like, duh.
Shane Topp
People listening to this are driving to work, are like, what is happening right now?
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Like, okay, pause. I need a self help pod.
Shane Topp
Honey, what are you listening to? It's Call Me Chris. I don't. I can't.
Call Me Chris
I think they all did shrooms before the podcast.
Shane Topp
They were talking about prison talk earlier.
Call Me Chris
Yeah. And Wales.
Shane Topp
Wow. Well, this has gone.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Well, this has gone crazy and I love it.
Shane Topp
Better than expected.
Call Me Chris
This has been so lovely. I'm by myself in Canada all the time, so it's so lovely to talk to such amazing, creative people and like, you just inspire me. So I thank you for that.
Shane Topp
I don't think we need to inspire you. You just told us how you wrote a movie, a TV show.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
It's not. You guys inspire me. We're like, cool. Working on Keebler Elf.
Shane Topp
Cool. So Keebler Elf with a cigar.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yes.
Call Me Chris
Sorry.
Shane Topp
So, okay, all these things you're working on, is there anything you want to shout out? Anything that you're.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, I mean, yeah, I'm actually. I was telling you earlier, before we started, I'm starting a podcast. It should be coming out in a couple weeks, which I'm very excited. It's a travel podcast, so I go to people, we sit and talk, but I also do stuff with them, Whether it's like going on a hike or like doing something they love to do and kind of intercutting it.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
So.
Call Me Chris
Yeah, it'll be fun.
Shane Topp
Awesome.
Call Me Chris
Be fun. We'd love to have you guys on sometime.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Hell, yeah. I'll go on a hike.
Shane Topp
We'll go down to the L. A river, hang out, fish, go into the.
Call Me Chris
Ocean, find some whales.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Yeah, let's go with a clear.
Shane Topp
I will go on a clear kayak with you guys. Whoa.
Call Me Chris
That would actually be.
Shane Topp
Okay. Let's book that. Let's.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Okay.
Call Me Chris
On. Yeah, I love that.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
Let's do it. All right, this is Call me Chris. And this is Smash Mouth.
Shane Topp
That's right. All right, get out of here. Get out of here. I'm making cookies.
Call Me Chris
Get out of here.
Shane Topp
I'm making cookies. Here. I. I wrote that down. I was like, should I just not say it? Should I just not.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
I love when you write it down. And you're sitting there and you're like, I'm just. I'm not going to say it.
Call Me Chris
Say it.
Amanda Leehan Cantow
You say it. And people are like, yeah, that's so, so interesting. You're right. I do do that. Yeah, it's true.
Call Me Chris
I'll be like, no, I get that.
Shane Topp
No, I get that.
