So we showed up here to the studio. I was getting my laptop out of my bag and I had it unfolded. I was like pulling it out and I was. But I was holding it with one hand like a pizza.

And then I slip and I drop it onto our concrete floor face down, and it lands and I pick it up and the screen is black and I. And some people were around, like, Courtney was nearby and she was like, is it broken? I was like, it looks broken. Oh, no, I think it's broken. And then I press a button and it's. It's fine. But the edges of my laptop, like, the metal parts, huge skids. Like it chunked some metal off the sides.

Yeah, yeah. It's much like, when I'm home, I feel like it's easier to kind of take a breather and go into nature because that's like, my thing is that's how I can take a break and turn off my brain a little bit. But, yeah, I'm on the road a lot.

Yeah, yeah. Which is fun and I'm really lucky to be able to do that. But it's nice to just be home for a little bit.

So it also has to be crazy. Cause I was so. When I found out you were gonna be on this episode, I was stoked and I was kind of, like, doing some research. But I was also just thinking about when we first had you on. To be completely honest, I hadn't heard of you. Yeah.

But the amount of times that happens nowadays, I don't mean it as an insult when I'm like, oh, I haven't heard of you.

Because the amount of times I discover someone new and they have so many followers is insane. That's just how big the Internet is nowadays. And the Internet also puts us into different corners.

And we're going to talk about that in a little bit of, like, the different corners of the Internet that we're on. But I'm so curious because you really. You weren't like, an overnight success. I wouldn't say. But you did gain a huge following in a short amount of time.

Because you started on the Internet in 2020, or were you doing it sooner?

[Call Me Chris]

No, no, it was a 2020, like, April 2020, when, like, everything kind of shut down in Canada at least. And, like, I was doing hair, and then I had a salon and I had to shut it down. And then I was just bored because I was. I worked like, six, seven days a week doing hair. So, like, not doing something was like, I was going to, like, implode. So my brother told me to download TikTok just to consume something. And I'm not a huge consumer of, like, Internet stuff, so I was just like, I'm gonna try to make stuff. Cause I used to. I used to, like, make funny, like, vines and all that.

Yeah.

You know, never famous or anything, but I was just like, I'll try it. And then it was probably, I'd say, like a month or two months when it started to gain traction.

Wow.

And then it went from like a thousand followers a day to 10,000 to like a hundred thousand every single day for like, over a year.

[Amanda Leehan Cantow]

And I was like, what were those first videos? Like, what were they?

[Call Me Chris]

At first, I was just kind of getting the hang of TikTok. And when in 2020, it was like, you'd have a sound and you'd lip sync and you'd put a caption, and you kind of make it your own. And there's a lot of that. At first.

And then like, a couple months into it, I was like, I really. I kind of want to try. Like, nobody even knew the sound of my voice because I was just doing all these lip syncs. I was like, yeah, I kind of want to just write, like, my own stuff, make my own characters. So I started with one character, which was like, the little kid, or actually, no, it was my Boston mom character. Because being a hairstylist, I have, like, so many different moms come through, and it's just. So. I have so many different characters.

So I have, like, this Russian character, and she's, like, super suave and, like, really sexy, and, like, she's. She's somebody I wish I could become. Like, that's what I love. And then she has two kids, Misha and Sergey, who are with. And then they have a cousin, Boris and Svetlana. And then Janet has a twin sister. Like, this is, like, I've expanded into, like, this weird, like, a multiverse, a cinematic universe. It, like, gives me chills. I'm so. I get so excited when people come up to me and they, like. They, like, like these tertiary characters that only come on, like, once every, like, 20 episodes or whatever. Or, like, I have, like, a German artist who, like, was just at this, like, whatever, this museum, and he makes the stupidest art. Like, I. I duct taped a banana to, like, a grate like that.
