Trevor
Is that how the song goes? I think that's.
Amanda
Yeah. In daylight. That's not the right words. Saw that on Broadway.
Trevor
It's pretty freaking sad. That song is like so much.
Shane
She was in all the biggest ones.
Amanda
She was so.
Shane
She was. She started.
Amanda
She was the first cast of Rent and the first cast of Wicked.
Shane
Jesus, that's great.
Amanda
And she wasn't even famous. She wasn't even making a lot of money.
Shane
That's.
Amanda
Isn't that wild? She only started making money with Frozen.
Trevor
Oh, my God. Wow.
Shane
For the lay person like me, I didn't know who she was until Frozen.
Trevor
Yeah.
Amanda
Did John Travolta when he fucked up her name.
Shane
I wonder if she. I've noticed because every TikTok or any video I've seen of Adina Menzel recently, all the comments are just Adele Delzim. And I'm like, I wonder if at this point she. She is just so pissed off about it.
Amanda
He sent her a lot of flowers.
Shane
Apparently when it first happened, it was funny. It was silly. But don't make that her legacy.
Amanda
Yeah. Move on.
Shane
Comment that under John Travolta's shit.
Amanda
Exactly.
Shane
Welcome to Smosh Mouth. I'm Shane.
Amanda
And I'm Amanda. And we are gonna be talking about memes. But we have a very special guest with us today. Trevor.
Trevor
Hi.
Shane
We can't talk about memes without Trevor.
Amanda
Without Trevor. Because you're our guy.
Trevor
I like memes. You know me, I'm a meme guy.
Amanda
You're an at school guy.
Shane
I keep up, I sh. Preface. We spent the past two days having 12 hour shoot days doing improv all day. When you see the project that comes out, you'll know what we were filming. So we're a little kooky right now.
Amanda
Yeah, bear with us. It might get a little silly in here.
Shane
We're a little silly today. The gas leak is strong.
Amanda
Strong.
Shane
Right before we started recording though, Amanda was talking about how you fell off a ski lift. And I was like, halt. Wait until we're rolling.
Amanda
Yeah, well, Trevor was talking about skiing and how he got caught in the snow when he was young and wasn't sure anyone was gonna get him.
Trevor
Yeah, I was just kind of sitting there for, you know, an indiscernible amount of time because I was a child probably like fourth grade. And yeah, I got stuck and I couldn't get out and I.
Shane
Your feet were stuck in the ground?
Trevor
It was like his whole body was. I was kind of sat prone, like my butt was deep and then my skis were lodged so I couldn't like, I couldn't wiggle my feet because my skis were stuck in the snow. So I was kind of just sitting like this. Sorry for the microphone. That's not great, I'm sure. And yeah, I was just sitting like that and I couldn't move. So I was like, well, I just gotta wait, I guess, until someone comes by. And then a friend of mine that I knew did come by, but he was such a tiny child. Like he was just a very like small kid.
Amanda
Couldn't help you.
Trevor
He couldn't help me. He was like. He tried to pull me out.
Shane
He couldn't dig the snow.
Amanda
Not when snow's hard. Listen, mountain snow is tough.
Trevor
Yeah, well, it was also tough cuz it was like a powder bank and there wasn't like it was in, in between some, some trees and stuff. So it was a good, good.
Shane
Okay, so you're stuck in the powder.
Trevor
Yeah. And then he's like, well, I can't get you out. I'll go see if I can find someone to help. And yeah, and then I actually ended up wiggling myself. I wiggled enough that one of my feet came out of the ski and then I could kind of get a footing.
Amanda
Wow.
Trevor
Yeah. And then I just went back to the lodge and my parents were very worried and everything was okay.
Amanda
I feel like there are people who grow up around going skiing or going Snowboarding and some people who don't. And it is the wildest thing to grow up with and then talk to people who have never done it. And it's like, okay, that's a whole life that I've lived. And I was telling you guys that I have fallen so much, I have literally somersaulted down full mountains with skis.
Shane
Your ass gets absolutely kicked.
Amanda
Lost everything. And I did it with all my sisters. And my little sister was adrenaline junkie. She would have no poles, and she would just go straight down, arms out, didn't care. My other sister was like a pro. She was really good at it. I was so scared that I would go really slow along the edge of the mountain. And my mom was like. My mom was so mad because she was like, you're slowing us down.
Shane
Oh, my God.
Amanda
I paid a lot of money. Get your shit together. We're going on a black diamond.
Trevor
Oh, my God. You were doing more pizza than french fries.
Amanda
I was doing way more pizza. A black diamond is the worst mountain that you can go down because they essentially build these mounds. So you're supposed to be like, I fell so hard, but getting there, I completely fell off a ski lift. But not, like, in the middle. Like, right when you're about the. The scariest thing is right when you're about to get off the ski lift and you have your sisters next to you, and it's literally just. They open the thing, and it's like a little mound, and you're supposed to go off and be like, yay. But my sisters were always like, let's fucking go. And I would have my poles out, and I'd be like, no, hold on, hold on, hold on. And they pushed, and I fell flat on my face. And another chair is coming with more people, More and more people. So I was stuck, and I was really scared. And I got no mercy. I swear to God. Skiing, I got no mercy. When I was skiing, people were like, hurry. Hurry up. Like, get it together, lady. And I was always freezing. I needed, like, heat warmers in my toes. Cause it was so cold.
Shane
Yeah, everything hurts more when it's cold.
Amanda
But a ski lift is so scary. My sister once sat on it and didn't want to get off and was like, nope. And when it just went back, it went all the way around halfway. And they had to stop it and then pull her back. And she was so little, and she.
Shane
Was like, why'd they have to pull it? Doesn't it just go back to the other station?
Amanda
It's not Safe to go down. It's very non safe.
Shane
Cause the whole thing's up funny.
Amanda
And you're on a huge mountain. And she was so little and she was like, no. And she just sat there crazy.
Trevor
I got a deep cut reference that I don't think anybody's gonna get. But growing up, you know, in a conservative Christian home, there was a comedian named Tim Hawkins who did, like, parody songs. He did one, it was a parody of With Arms Wide Open by Creed. And it was My Arms are Broken. And the whole song was about him bailing down a black diamond slope and breaking his arms.
Shane
My arms are broken. That's really funny. On that big black diamond. The last time I went, I was snowboarding. And I. I started the day I didn't know how to do it at all. By the end, you kind of get like. You're kind of doing the very basic, like, going back and forth. But at one point I got like, confident enough and I had goggles on, you know, and. And I start going and I made a wrong turn and I just fully, like, fly back onto my back. I slammed so hard that the goggles just into the sky. Oh, my God, dude. Just getting your ass.
Amanda
It is so insanely dangerous. Like, just somersault and have everything and then your hat goes somewhere and people are like, get out of the way.
Shane
I know other people are going past.
Amanda
You really fast and they have no patience. They're like, either get off the mountain, don't be here.
Shane
I know.
Trevor
I think the craziest thing was being a kid. And like, when you're a kid, you don't have, like, ski gear. At least. Like, I didn't. It was like, you just go up and you rent skis. Like, I didn't have poles when I was doing as a kid. I had a beanie. I didn't have goggles. Like, I was just raw dogging going down this mountain as a child. Which is probably why I got stuck, because I'm just going down the street. Poles, no rules.
Shane
Yeah, I didn't have poles when I. When you're. When you go skiing as a little kid, they often don't give you pole.
Amanda
That's why your arms are just.
Shane
You're just like my hot take. I was constantly told that skiing is easier than snowboarding. Skiing to me is now way more terrifying.
Amanda
Oh, because you can.
Shane
When I snowboarded, I was like, at least my feet are on the same thing with skiing. I'm like, oh, my legs are going to split off. Off.
Amanda
It's your legs.
Shane
My leg's going to split off, my dick is going to get completely ripped off.
Amanda
Legs are completely out. And the worst part is the shame and embarrassment because grown ass men or women who look fantastic are like, get out of the way.
Trevor
Brutal. Cuz you're trying to slow down then and you're there and you try and turn the skis in and that's when.
Amanda
You just go for, it's starfish. And it's so embarrassing.
Shane
God.
Amanda
And your family has to wait for you and they're like, dude, we're going to the lodge. We're getting chicken nuggets. And you're like, I'll be there in an hour.
Shane
You're starving and all you want to do is get there and you can see it, but you can't make it. Wait.
Trevor
And like you're skiing and you don't want to. People just get on the lift going back up. So it's like your whole family, they get to the bottom and they just get on the lift and then you're.
Shane
All alone and you see them going back up and your body's like, what are you doing?
Amanda
And it's like, there's no mercy. I need help. I'm skiing down an ice snow powder mountain. Stop it. It's freezing.
Trevor
I'm just sliding down like I've fallen and I'm not getting up. Like I'm towards the end, so I'm just sliding down the last little bit. Everyone's going by.
Shane
I accidentally went up a black on a black diamond when I my first time snowboarding. So I literally do not know how to do it. And all I had to do is I just unbuckled it and I just sat on the snowboard, made my way down. Meanwhile, people are like ramping over you.
Amanda
I don't care if you, if you are too scared or you take up. One time I took off my skis on a black mountain and my mom was like, fine, whatever. And I took off my skis and.
Shane
Walked down slowly, but it's just a nightmare.
Amanda
She just like. I think when she sees her kids get scared, she gets worried and worried comes out as anger. And she's like, no.
Shane
And worry leads to anger.
Amanda
And anger leads to rage. And she's like, you have to face this. And I was like, this is not gonna help me learn. I'm gonna take off my skis and I'm gonna walk down the fucking black.
Shane
It's such a nightmare when you're not really good at it. And then you have those moments when you finally Crash. And you just kind of sit up, and you just sit there. You just look around. It's, like, silent. You're just like.
Amanda
And you're like, I'm never gonna make it.
Shane
Like, I'm gonna die on this mountain.
Trevor
Just freezing cold. Can't feel your fingers inside your gloves.
Amanda
And it's, like, puffed up. I feel like the jackets were puffed. I felt very claustrophobic. I had, like, the overall ski thing where it's like, overalls, it's all puffy. And I was like, I have 600 layers on. I feel like the kid in a Christmas Story. Like, I was just.
Shane
You're also, like, you're. At the same time, your fingers and toes are freezing off, but your torso is sweating inside.
Trevor
So sweaty. It's like an oven ins. Like the eight layers. But then I have one small pair of gloves on and my fingers.
Shane
Every layer of hell at once.
Amanda
And also, H has never skied in his literal life. And I'm like, do I do it with him? Yeah, I don't know if I can.
Shane
And you're talking about. You're talking about East Coast, Massachusetts skiing.
Amanda
Yeah. Where it's, like, real snow.
Shane
I've done Colorado skiing.
Amanda
What's that like?
Shane
It's. It's. I mean, it's real snow, too. It's just like. I feel like the vibe has got to be a little different. Like the. The. The culture.
Amanda
I spent some time in Vail, Colorado. Okay.
Shane
Okay.
Amanda
So, yeah, And I've skied down there. And that was, like. That was like, a rich sport.
Shane
Oh, that was rich. Yeah.
Amanda
Like, matching outfits.
Shane
You're talking, like, Aspen. Like, that's people flying from California to go skiing there. So you're. That's. That's rich.
Amanda
And it was stunning. But I was like, this is rich ski.
Shane
Oh, it's bougie.
Trevor
That's like Sun Valley in Idaho. Sun Valley in Idaho is like, the rich. Like, there are a lot of celebrities that have, like, winter homes in Sun Valley. Whoa. Rich skiing.
Amanda
Yeah. Mine was, like, Ragged Mountain, and it was like, good luck. I hope the chairlift gets you up there.
Shane
That sounds better.
Trevor
That was all the skiing that I did, like, close to Boise, like, up in the mountains was just like. They're like three different, like, big, like, ski resorts. It's actually really cool when you're in Boise in the winter, you can look up at the mountains, and at night, you see, like, this little triangle of lights that's. It's Bogus Basin is what it's called. And it's One of like the ski. You can see the lights that go down the mountain. Yeah, it's pretty cool.
Amanda
Well, anyways, that's our skiing journeys and now we'll get into memes.
Shane
So we thought we would take this episode to discuss some of our favorite memes of 2024. We're. Like I said favorite memes. So there are some big memes this year we are not going to discuss because we didn't like them and maybe nobody likes them.
Trevor
Probably correct.
Shane
But with the. We're going to discuss a few of them. There's obviously infinite amount of memes every year. I'm gonna start off with a little bit of a hot take.
Trevor
Okay.
Shane
I don't know if this was a good meme year.
Amanda
No, I kind of agree with you.
Shane
I don't think it was a really solid meme year. I think there's other years where it's like really fun and really good. I think there was a lot of memes this year that weren't like. They were just kind of more of a theme that went on for a while.
Amanda
I thought Smosh did better memes this year.
Shane
Smosh had smosh wise, mosh wise. The memes were solid. It's been in the world, in the US I just.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
Kind of weak.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
I know. Like a lot of the memes, some of which we're not discussing, were only like kind of funny. Like when once we started making fun of it in ironic way.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
But there are years where like 2016 insane year memes dying. No, they fluctuate. There's good memes meme years and good and bad ones. Like 2018 was a weird meme year where it became pure nonsensical.
Trevor
Yeah. You can actually look like people will do like breakdowns of meme years. Like almost like you have like. Like periods of art. It's like you'll be like, this is like the post ironic meme era. Like deep fried where nothing makes sense. It's just like an image. Like there is that markiplier one E. It was E. It was markiplier photoshopped as Lord Farquaad. And it was super deep fried. And it just had the letter E on it. And that was the whole meme.
Shane
When. When it's. It happens occasionally when it just. We. We devolve where the jokes keep layering on to each other until all you're doing is posting absurd nothingness. And then we kind of reset.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
And it'll eventually scientists or historians. I mean, this is pretty incredible.
Trevor
I think this was an awesome year for, like, meme language. Like, meme words. Because, like, I will say, like, I think, like, the mainstream, like, memes that you get, like, a lot of, like, variations of weren't as good, but I think just as far as, like, words go, like. Like, I think anything, like, Skibidi, Ohio, Gyatt, Riz. Like, that is awesome to me. I love that.
Shane
But I think this year was almost entirely ironic. Whereas there are years where the memes aren't fully irony yet the thing itself is kind of funny. I also think a lot of it was just, like, X was just not good for delivering memes. Like, it had been. No, its algorithm is dog shit. It's all AI, so it doesn't. It doesn't communicate it as well because it's not real people doing it anymore.
Trevor
We need to go back to I funny.
Shane
Yeah, true meaning base back.
Amanda
I funny.
Trevor
I funny.
Shane
I funny. That's what I say. That's. That's what I say when I look in the mirror every morning. I funny.
Amanda
No, that's not good, Shane.
Shane
I handsome. I funny.
Amanda
I handsome.
Shane
I worth it. I funny. Okay, so we have a list here of some. And, Amanda, you threw in some images you found on the Internet.
Amanda
I went. I went meme hunting.
Shane
I wrote down this list, and all of a sudden, I see. I see images popping up, and I'm like, way to go, Amanda.
Amanda
You were like, what are you. You're like. You're working hard. Like, way to brag about.
Shane
I was like, we're going to talk about these events, but, yeah, let's look at some images. No, you did the correct thing because.
Trevor
I didn't add any images. I didn't have the doc, so I'm almost like the expert that they'd bring in on, like, Pawn Stars. Like, we're gonna bring in a meme guy.
Shane
This is worth $100,000. Like, great, we'll give you 20 bucks.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
So one of them that I wasn't really aware of at first, it took a while was Mu Dang, the baby hippo.
Amanda
It took me a second, too, but the memes are hilarious.
Shane
I heard the name before. I saw the creature.
Trevor
The creature.
Shane
The creature. So Mu Dang is a little baby hippo who lives in a zoo in Thailand.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
She's adorable. Everyone loves her. She's violent.
Amanda
She's so violent.
Shane
She's constantly getting sprayed with water. She's constantly biting people.
Trevor
Yeah.
Amanda
And hippos are extremely violent and dangerous.
Shane
I believe they kill more people than every other animal, which is crazy because.
Amanda
In Fantasia, they made them do, like, ballet. And I was like, that's a lot.
Shane
Well, they can do ballet, but they can also kill people.
Trevor
Have you seen that Black Swan?
Amanda
So true.
Trevor
Have you seen that video of like, a boat? Like. Like, yeah. Going on a river and there's a hippo chasing them. Dude, it's so insane.
Shane
You know what's extra terrifying? Hippos can't swim.
Trevor
They don't swim.
Shane
They are. They are jumping off the bottom of the. Like. Yeah, they're on the ground of the. Oh, they just go on the bottom and like, jump bound. They just.
Amanda
Which is crazy because they're thick.
Trevor
They're so muscular. Dense. They're so dense that they just sink to the bottom and can bound across.
Amanda
And they're fast.
Shane
They're so fast and they are so aggressive.
Amanda
What would you do if a hippo was barreling towards you?
Shane
I die. You're going to die.
Amanda
You immediately.
Shane
You are going to die. There's. I would feel. I would feel so much more comfortable if I saw a giant great white coming towards me and a hippo. No, a great white. I would believe that. I'm like, it might not attack me. Or you can do the thing where you. If. If I'm good enough.
Amanda
You're going to go like this to.
Shane
I have seen.
Trevor
I'm not going to put my hand.
Shane
I'm not. I'm going to go. Stop it. I'm not saying I will successfully do this, but I have seen videos of Scuba Diver. They. They direct.
Amanda
It's that woman who.
Shane
I'm saying it's possible to do that. If you try to do that with a hippo, they're gonna go. And they're gonna just bite your arm off.
Amanda
Sharks are so fast that there's. You going like this.
Shane
Sharks. Okay. Sharks are fast, but most often they're just swimming.
Amanda
They just.
Shane
Yeah, if it was like, sharks are just robots.
Trevor
I feel like those videos, they're like kind of coming at them slowly, though, where it's like they're coming at them slowly and then open their mouth. If a great white is like charging me.
Shane
Okay, we're not talking over. We're not talking about.
Amanda
It's crazy. Shane.
Shane
A demon situation about natural anim. Okay. Hippos charge at demon situation because they are coming at you. Sharks are usually. A lot of shark attacks are just sharks just accidentally.
Amanda
Here's what I would do. I would roll to the side. I would go down in a squat. I would jump up.
Shane
I would jump up my hand.
Amanda
I would get on the back of the hippo, because its mouth is the most dangerous part. And I would ride it until I got to a ship to safety.
Trevor
You'd be like Legolas in Lord of the Rings clambering onto the horse from underneath.
Amanda
I just watched all the Lord of the Rings.
Trevor
So did I.
Amanda
Not extended version, though, because I didn't have the time.
Shane
Yeah, you know what I do? The. The would open its mouth and you'd see me there in the middle of its mouth, holding the tongue. Hold on.
Amanda
I'm funny.
Shane
Like Captain Hook with the cock. And I was like, oh, no, nightmare, you're dying. I don't. I don't have. I don't have any interest in being around wild hippos. No. There's not many animals that I'm like, I don't want to go see them. Most animals I would love to go see. Like, for instance, I really want to go see wild gorillas. I'd love to hike up and be around gorillas. Like chimps, chimp, chimpanzees. No, thank you.
Amanda
Gorillas are dangerous too.
Shane
Gorillas are nowhere near as dangerous as chimpanzees.
Trevor
Yeah, I just love.
Shane
Nowhere near as dangerous.
Trevor
I just want to hang out with a gorilla.
Shane
A gorilla will, like, if you just respect them, they're like, hey, man, you can hang out.
Amanda
So what happened when Harambe got shot?
Shane
Well, a kid jumped into their.
Amanda
So he was disrespected.
Shane
I think that's an unfortunate situation.
Trevor
I think there's still speculation on whether or not Harambe had intent to hurt. Because some people are like, it seemed like he was dragging the child out of the water almost like to safety. But everyone was just so scared of the idea that Harambe might hurt the child that they had to put him down. But I believe. I don't know, I'm on the side of, like, maybe Harambe wasn't gonna. I don't know that the child. The child was in danger, but I don't know that Harambe hadn't.
Amanda
He put himself there. So, yeah, karma's a bitch.
Trevor
All right.
Amanda
We don't have to open.
Shane
It's kinda. Can I say, we don't have to open up the spoon. Can I say this reminds me, like. Cause it is that fucked up thought of, like, well, if you jump into the animal exhibit, you're in their home and they're allowed to be an animal at you. It was a child. I think it's a little different, but it's segue. I have this thought when it comes to sports, when have you ever seen, like, when someone streaks out into a. Yes and a football player? I think it's so funny every time. Because my thought is, if you go out onto a sports field, the athletes are allowed to do sports at you. All go at you and tackle you or whatever. I think it's so funny every time.
Amanda
When streakers get knocked, just get laid out or, like, security, like, knocks them down. They're, like, looking at their friends. They're like, yeah. And then security's, like, just lays them out.
Shane
I think sometimes you can tell the security is, like, stoked. They're like. They're like, this is my moment. I'm gonna make the team. Okay. So mu dang. Adorable baby hippo. Someday, Nightmare hippo, she's gonna. Is she a mini hippo?
Trevor
She's a pygmy hippo. I don't know about.
Shane
She's not gonna get. So maybe she's gonna be cool.
Trevor
Might not be a killer hippo. Probably still dangerous.
Amanda
She seems pretty cool. Like, she's.
Shane
I just love all these images of her just biting. You posted one just, like, be the violence you want to see in the world. And it's like just screaming and biting a leg. Her name translates to bouncy pork in Thai.
Trevor
Bouncy.
Amanda
Good Lord.
Shane
Bouncy pork.
Amanda
If I was nicknamed bouncy pork, I would start non on legs, too. Okay.
Shane
Yeah, look.
Trevor
No, actually, I haven't thought about this until now, but bouncing.
Shane
Oh, man.
Trevor
No, I was gonna say mudang is kind of like my dog, Napkin. Napkin. My dog Napkin is a psycho. He will. If you. If you look at him and if he's close to you and you just look him in the eye for more than, like, two seconds, he will just, like, turn his head and just bite it. He'll just be like. And it's always, like, playful. He's not, like, trying to be mean or hurt you, but he just gets this little look in his eye, and he'll go completely still and then just lunge at you. It's awesome. So, so funny.
Amanda
Napkin seems so sweet, like, a sweet name, but he is.
Trevor
But he's a little psychopath, but kind of like, he gives mu dang vibes. He's like a little. He's a little rasp with a mudang.
Amanda
A bouncy pork.
Trevor
Bouncy pork.
Amanda
I just don't know how I feel about that.
Trevor
I love doing a little pork bouncing on the weekend.
Shane
Oh, yeah.
Amanda
You are a freak. You are a nasty little freak.
Shane
You know, the weekends were bouncing on pork you know, and that's. That'.
Amanda
God, every time we have you on Trevor, you're more shocking than me, and it's insane.
Trevor
Just a regular guy motorboating.
Amanda
Regular guy.
Trevor
Motorbuilding on board.
Shane
Hey, that was one of our best memes of the year.
Amanda
I literally was like, yeah, I was having a great time. My sisters, we were on a motorboat.
Trevor
Yeah, I'm motorboating this weekend.
Shane
Motorboating this weekend.
Amanda
Good Lord.
Shane
You said Saturday. Okay. There was another animal this year that I was also not aware of until we talked about it on here. Pesto. Pesto the penguin, I've not heard of. So Pesto is a little. A baby penguin, I believe. A baby emperor penguin or. Yeah, that was adopted by smaller penguins.
Trevor
Yeah.
Amanda
So this is not its birth mom.
Shane
Yeah. So he's massive, but he's following these other penguins that are small.
Amanda
He's a miniature mob boss baby.
Trevor
That's awesome.
Amanda
Massive and all, like. There weren't. There weren't a lot of good Pesto memes, but there were great tiktoks. So I, like, screenshotted some, and some of the tiktoks had me rolling.
Shane
Are you following my mom at the function? Because I don't know anyone there. Just because he's just this awkward. He's just this giant, awkward, bumbling, awesome animal. So cute.
Trevor
Does anyone in the room remember Mr. Popper's penguins?
Amanda
Yeah.
Trevor
Anyone?
Shane
I didn't see the movie, but there was a movie. There's. I think there's two movies. Oh.
Trevor
See, I was a fan of the. Of the novel, but that was, like, my dream as a kid. Like, the idea of someone owning a penguin. As a child. For me, I was like, that would be so awesome to own a penguin and have a penguin.
Shane
They are.
Amanda
You'd have to live on ice, like, you know, in the cold.
Shane
This is the thing about. This is the thing about birds, though. And it's always shocking. Every kind of bird, they stink like nothing else.
Amanda
Wait, really?
Shane
Birds stink so bad?
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
I love birds, but when you go to a zoo or if you're just around any. Any bird, it's always amazing. The flamingo. The flamingo exhibit, you can smell it a mile away. And penguins are the same way.
Amanda
Why is that?
Shane
They're just stinky.
Trevor
When I was in high school, just stinky.
Shane
I don't know what to tell you.
Trevor
I skipped school one day to go to the Boise Zoo, and I was going into the penguin exhibit, and there was. I almost got attacked by a goose. There was a very threatening goose that Makes sense. There are a lot of geese in Idaho, but this particular one was literally. He was, like, standing on the little corner above the penguin exhibit, and he had his wings out. And he was just staring me down and hissing at me. And I was, like, trying to walk in. He's right above the door. And I was just, like, having a face off with this goose and. Yeah, hissing at me. I ended up just having to bolt forward to the door and get inside.
Amanda
They will take you down.
Trevor
I. I hate geese. Terrifying.
Shane
So aggressive.
Amanda
Yeah, swans are kind of, you know, aggressive.
Shane
Swans and geese, they're assholes. Don't mess with them.
Amanda
Do you guys remember when planet Earth came out? Like, back in the day, like, Planet Earth, and they did the whole penguin segment and they had. They showed, like, a time lapse of all the penguins huddling up for warmth, and when they let out, it let out all this heat. Penguins are amazing.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
Now, have you ever seen, like, how dense their feathers are? Yeah, because it's like that. You'd think it's their skin, but no, it's just dense feathers. Antarctica is an absolute hellscape, though, because they show the penguins all running from seals and hunting them. And then it's like. It's like, oh, you thought it ended there. And then they show the seals running. Running away from orcas.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
Polar bears or something. I'm like, oh, my God.
Trevor
Penguins.
Amanda
It's hard for them to run.
Shane
They can't.
Amanda
I saw the Penguin on hbo, Max. Colin Farrell had a hard time running.
Trevor
Well, have you seen Happy Feet? There are some terrifying scenes in that film. And surfs up as well.
Shane
Several of them get eaten by seals.
Amanda
Well, yeah. I mean, their arms aren't giving them a lot of leverage.
Shane
No, they're not. Anyways, that's why the ones in Mary Poppins, they got to stay there.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
So Mary Poppins, penguins.
Trevor
Look, you can't get caught by the seals, Vic. I'm gonna give you what you deserve. You deserve the biggest fish in the Arctic.
Amanda
He's doing the Penguin. You never saw the Penguin on hbo, Max.
Trevor
You never saw the Penguin. Such a good show. It's been out for, like, two months.
Shane
Okay, man.
Trevor
You never saw it.
Amanda
It's ins. Because it's such a good show.
Trevor
No spoilers. He becomes the Penguin.
Amanda
He is. He's the penguin.
Shane
I couldn't think of a character from Batman that I was less interested in. Wow. Look, Mom.
Amanda
Are you joking?
Shane
It's like you got. You've got Mr. Freeze, you got Poison Ivy, you got the Joker. It's like, oh, and here's a guy.
Amanda
No.
Trevor
Okay, guys, he's got a sick ass umbrella.
Amanda
We're talking about the Batman. The Penguin from the Batman. Okay. It was sick. And he's, he's twisted and wild and, and you know, sometimes cute. Like in the tiniest second, like quick second, you're like, oh. And then you're like, no.
Trevor
It's crazy how like you, you're so close to rooting for him. You like so badly want to root for him and then he is just like a terrible person.
Amanda
And then you're like, damn, I can't root for you. Yeah, Penguin.
Trevor
He's the Penguin. I, I thought it was crazy. When Raven and I finished it, we watched like the end, like kind of after where some of the actors are talking about it, seeing to seeing Colin Farrell then he's got like his Ireland headband, his hair all pushed up.
Amanda
It's a good time, yo.
Trevor
Yeah. Playing the Penguin, it was such a crazy. And it's like it goes from it so fast. I'm like, it's insane that you played that character.
Amanda
It's insane.
Shane
He's a great actor. So this was probably the first big meme of the year and I, I cannot believe this happened this year. I'm wondering if I made a mistake and this was last year.
Amanda
It feels like a year.
Shane
Like this feels like so long ago, but. Willy's Chocolate experience.
Trevor
Good God.
Amanda
In Glasgow.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
Yeah. So this was in Scotland and this was a full on scam where they were like, guys were putting on this huge cool experience where you're going to go to, to basically Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. And it's. And they advertised and it was like expensive tickets.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
Well bought tons. And they show up and it is basically an empty, empty like factory room with just a few decorations. A couple actors.
Amanda
A couple actors who.
Shane
The actors were the heroes.
Amanda
I was like, they, I don't think they knew how much of a scam it was.
Shane
Actors did everything they could to make it worth it. And in fact, some of the performances I saw, I was like, you know what? I would have bought a ticket just to support them because. But the best was. And they didn't shy away, you know, because a lot of people would have shown up and been like, I'm out of here. But the famous photo was the lady who is the Oompa Loompa Loompa. That photo is just legendary. She's not hiding away. She's like, I'm here, I'm staying with it.
Amanda
And I just found some different versions of her that.
Shane
Her and that. That famous artwork.
Trevor
Oh, my God.
Amanda
Just standing.
Trevor
Oh, Mr. White Dude.
Shane
Also the fucking, like, like, what's that? It's the unknown, and it's like the person just. The mask just, like, coming out, like, being all crazy and, like, you hear a kid, like, start to cry.
Trevor
I know.
Shane
And I'm like, the unknown's not even. What is that? What is that? No, no, no.
Amanda
Nobody knows what that is. Like, Veruca Salt wasn't there. No one was there.
Shane
I don't think it could. It was Willy Wonka because it was Willy's Chocolate Experience, but it was completely a fraud. They tried to, like, they sue. I think it. I think it culminated in a lawsuit of some sort, but I don't know much about that. I just know that it happened and that that is probably my favorite meme of the year. It was just stellar. Yeah, it was so funny. It was definitely sad that people got scammed out of money, but it wasn't enough money that I'm like, okay, there were actual, like, you know, casualties here. It was just stupid.
Amanda
I know.
Trevor
I feel bad.
Shane
I feel bad for the kids.
Amanda
What was the description on it? Like, how. Why did people.
Shane
I don't.
Amanda
So much money. Like, what did they offer them, like, a chocolate fountain that they could swim in?
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
Like, probably a lot more. This has happened a lot. You know, this all comes back to the OG was Dash Con, which you may or may not know about, because at Smosh Live, it might be the one we talk about recording this before.
Amanda
I don't know. But I do know about Fyre Festival.
Shane
Yeah. Similar types of things happen all the time.
Trevor
I feel bad because it seems like of all the people that, like, deserve to turn their 15 minutes of fame into something, it should have been the Oompa Loompa girl. And it seems like she, like, didn't get that opportunity. Like, I wish she would have, like, been able to do something and we'd be, you know, we're. We would still be keeping up with Oompa Loompa girl.
Amanda
I think it's the picture that they caught of her. I think if she looked a little bit more like, her face is excitement. Yeah. But her face is perfect. I think people just wanted to leave her alone.
Shane
She. She was there going, this sucks so bad.
Amanda
She's like, I'm. I'm probably making. She probably made, like, 300 bucks or something.
Shane
Yeah. I don't know if she made that much money. I, I, I, I wonder if they Made. I wonder if they got paid. I think that was part of the contest.
Amanda
Maybe they were promised to swim in the chocolate fountain, but there wasn't one.
Shane
Also what happened this year, though, was the Detroit Bridgerton Ball, which was the same situation where it was like it was going to be another big party. It was like, oh, for fans of Bridgerton, we're going to do this big. Bridgerton.
Amanda
Because they did it in la. My friend was actually one of the pianists.
Shane
Oh, really?
Amanda
She played, like, the Queen's guard, and she was a pianist. And I went with all my friends, and it was sick.
Shane
Oh, really? I didn't know that you went so good.
Amanda
It was at the Biltmore in downtown.
Shane
Whoa.
Amanda
And it was actually sick. But it was. It was sponsored by, like, a very famous vodka, not Smirnoff or something. So it felt like they had a budget. They had a fricking budget. Like, you bowed to the Queen. There was a full dance experience, like violinist, singers. And I was like, okay, this is pretty sick.
Shane
That's what people expected. But the Bridgerton Ball, I wonder if, like, the sponsor fell through or something. Cause it was just an empty hotel. Convention center. No. And a bunch of people there just dressed up, excited for that, thinking that was gonna happen. And then they're just sitting around, and I'm like, that's such a bummer.
Amanda
Wait, that sucks. Because they were, like, traveling and they had, like. They had professional dancers and singers, and the costumes were outrageous and the cocktails were so good. That sucks. Cause, like, all those people probably dressed up.
Shane
Yeah. Oh, they're all. There's the famous image, which we may or may not be able to show of just like, you see several women dressed up in, like, really nice gowns, and one's just sitting against the wall, just on her phone, just like. And I'm like, that sucks, man. You were so excited to be such a fan of something and to show up, and it's just nothing.
Trevor
Yeah.
Amanda
Sucks. Like buying long gloves is a thing, you know?
Shane
Yeah. Hold on. We have a post here that Selena put up. The Detroit Bridgerton Ball was a complete scam. My family and I just left the Detroit Bridgerton Ball. It was absolutely horrendous. There was nowhere to sit. Although the venue was nice, the decor was sparse and extremely tacky. It wasn't even Bridgerton themed. We spent $400 on tickets. Wait, for a complete BS experience? I read that the event company made hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue for this event. We went to the Bridgerton Ball in Chicago Two years ago, and it was absolutely beautiful. We were so disappointed. The last two slides are more along the lines of what we were expecting. This event, honestly, was so damaging to the Bridgerton brand. I'm so shocked that this was even allowed. Several people were complaining and upset with the event. Anyone else go to the ball tonight?
Amanda
Wait, my ticket was, like, $50, so not 400.
Shane
This is. So that's probably what they're expecting. Expecting. So. Yeah, that looks nice. Yeah, that looks nice. That looks beautiful. So that's what they were expecting.
Trevor
They got like, oh, my God, that is so.
Amanda
No, that's a carpet on a wall.
Shane
They got a carpet on a wall for hundreds of. Dude spent 400.
Amanda
The one in LA. They choose. You know how they choose the diamond. I don't know if you guys are Bridgerton lovers like me. They choose the diamond of the year. And my friend has never watched Bridgerton, so she showed up looking like she was, like, a goth witch.
Shane
Nice.
Amanda
With, like, a huge wig. And we were like, damn. And we were like, you look amazing. And she looks so gothy and, like, not Bridgerton themed, but looked incredible. And the fucking queen chose her as the diamond. So she got to go out and they, like, had confetti and she was on this turntable and we were like, what the fuck is happening?
Shane
That's awesome.
Amanda
So for them to spend. First of all, we didn't even spend over $100, person.
Shane
It was like 50 bucks.
Amanda
Yeah. For them to spend. I know, 400 and get.
Shane
That was collectively probably their group, maybe insane to me. No, it's. It's a huge scam. If you're not. You need to deliver what that's worth.
Trevor
Can I say something really quick? I've recently just started watching Gossip Girl.
Amanda
You've never seen it?
Trevor
Never seen it. It's great. It's a lot of fun. That's just Bridgerton. Bridgerton is just gossip.
Shane
Oh, well, yeah. It's all. It all boils down.
Amanda
Author. Because isn't it? I've actually seen a couple episodes. No, no. Gossip Girl is like a girl. It's like a secret.
Trevor
Yeah.
Amanda
Person.
Shane
It's the lady whistle.
Trevor
All they do is have parties. Like, they just have parties all the time because they're rich, and that's what they do in Bridgerton. And then there's just all these, like, rich people and they just, you know, are all encompassed.
Shane
It's kind of like a soap opera kind of basis of, like, drama. Like, the pole is like, the relationships and the. And the secrets and the betrayals formula.
Trevor
I will say classic. Watching TV from that era, it is insane how different it is. Like the era of binging has made it so easy for people to not really put much in a single episode as far as drama and kind of like drag drama out. There is something insane happening in. In every single episode.
Shane
Oh, yeah.
Trevor
Every single episode has some betrayal, some insane reveal at the end because they're like, we got to get people back next week. You know, we got to get people back on cable.
Shane
Shows were like, crazy. We miss step into the world of power, loyalty, and luck.
Amanda
I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.
Shane
With family. Cannolis and spins mean everything.
Amanda
Now you want to get mixed up in the family business.
Shane
Introducing the godfather@champacasino.com test your luck in the shadowy world of the Godfather slot.
Amanda
Someday I will call upon you to do a service for me.
Shane
Play the Godfather now@Champacasino.com Welcome to the family. No purchase necessary. VGW Group void. We're prohibited by law 21 + terms and conditions apply. My. My take on it because I, Drew Gooden had a good video about how Netflix and other streaming services are, like, just trying to draw out your attention how documentary series are, like 10 episodes to tell you something that you could have told you in one.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
But, yeah, back. Back then, it was like every episode was a show.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
Like, this hour is a full show. It's gonna have. It's gonna have the whole arc, but it's gonna lead you to next episode. But that's why I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, because every episode out of its mind.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
And it's every. And the first season is monster of the week, and it moves on from that, but it still has monster of the week. It's most of the week. And then there's the big bad that they hint to every episode. And I'm such a good. That formula, so fun.
Amanda
They're trying to bring it back. Like One Tree Hill was that. They're trying to. They're literally rebooting One Tree Hill, which is wild to me.
Shane
Crazy.
Amanda
And like, the OC they brought it back on Netflix. Not like a new one, but the O.C. i don't know if you guys ever watched the O.C.
Shane
Or I know of the Hills.
Amanda
Like, all of those were. I know that's more reality, but those actually had, like, intense, intense things happening. Intense acting, and that's why we were addicted. And now shows are just like, bro.
Shane
So Courtney's been watching Vanderpump Rules. And she's like, okay, it's reality. She's like, yeah, it's reality, but it's from, like, the first season's like, 2013. And watching this, I was like, you cannot be this bad of a person nowadays on reality tv. These people are awful. How blatantly awful. Like, people are awful on reality TV all the time. Still. Not to this degree. Like, she'll, like, explain what someone did. I'm just like. And they're still on the show.
Amanda
Restaurants and bars.
Shane
Yeah. It's like, oh, my God. It's shocking.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
Because I'm like, there's no way you could do this. I mean, I guess it's still around today. There are still shows. But I. I couldn't believe it. I was like, this has to be fake, right? I'm like, no, people were. People are really like that? Yep, they're still like that. They just have to kind of disguise it a little bit. Nowadays. Maybe they have, like, reunion. Depends on the show.
Amanda
The, like, call them out. They know that they have a reunion coming up.
Shane
Those reunions are unlike any. Because I think about Love is Blind, where they don't call out anyone on anything. And then Vanderpump rules. Whenever I'm, like, walking by and it's on, they're just, like, going. Walking in on people.
Amanda
You know, he's just sitting there.
Shane
I'm not.
Trevor
When I'm sitting there, locked in on the tv.
Shane
What did Jax do?
Trevor
This after I get my popcorn from the kitchen.
Shane
Mind boggling. But also, like, we're sitting there going, this. This restaurants insane. And I realized. I meant to ask you, I was like, I think restaurants are probably just like this.
Amanda
Maybe, like, restaurants are soap operas.
Shane
Insane behavior.
Amanda
Every day that I worked in a restaurant, something fucked happened. Whether it was like. Like, you could make a reality show easily on just any restaurant in LA or anywhere. Because there's all these factors, like drunk people, rats, relationships, hookups.
Shane
Literally, in these episodes, several times someone, like, punches someone else in the face. It's not like, oh, there's a fight. They yelled at you. It's like, no, that guy punched that guy in the face.
Trevor
That's awesome.
Shane
They're cheating on each other. They're saying horrible things. And then there's the reveal that they're in their 30s.
Amanda
Yep.
Shane
It's not like they're like 18 to 20. It's like, whoa, these kids. Like, this guy is 35 years old.
Amanda
I mean, do you remember the Jersey Shore?
Shane
I mean, no. Oh, my God. See, I don't know if we need to go back to that era of reality television.
Amanda
But no, I don't think so.
Shane
But going all the way back. I remember I watched the first season of Gossip Girl as it was airing because, like, I was out here. I was. I was auditioning. I was like, I need to. I need to keep up with the shows so that I know what I, like, might go out for. I was too young at the time for Gossip Girl, but I remember watching that show and just. It wasn't for me.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
And then I. But I was always curious. I'm like, who is the Gossip Girl? And when someone revealed it to me, I was like, oh, okay.
Amanda
Wait, who is it?
Shane
I'm not.
Trevor
Hey, hey, hey.
Shane
Not gonna spoil it.
Amanda
Oh, yeah, you haven't seen it.
Shane
I'm watching people who know. Don't spoil it. Did you watch. Did you watch Gossip Girl?
Amanda
Well, don't Google it because, you know, the show old.
Shane
It surprised me.
Trevor
It's insane how shocked. It's like, that show came out in like 2009, but, like, they're all in high school. Like, these people are set up as being 17 year olds. And there are plot lines in the show that are like, that's just like insane. Like, you have. You have a, like a 40 year old Duchess that's hooking up with like a 17 year old. And it's just this plot line. There's like this, like, plot where, like, Blake Lively's character has, like, someone like, filmed her, like, having sex without her consent. And I'm like, this is crazy stuff.
Shane
Crazy.
Trevor
But then, like, they'll also treat some things in the weirdest way where it's like, they're like, you can't have sex on the first date. And I'm like, what? Like, this is like, insane.
Shane
It was. It's all over the place back then. Our next meme, I think this was the biggest one here at the office.
Amanda
I agree.
Shane
This was. This was the theme here for months. It's Brat Summer.
Amanda
Brad Summer.
Shane
Brat Summer everywhere.
Amanda
Brad Summer, baby.
Shane
What a. What a.
Amanda
It became. It literally became. It should be in the dictionary. Like, that's so brat. Like, brat.
Shane
There's a man. I've been obsessed a little bit just because I was listening to a lot of music this year of, like, what'll win album of the year? And there's a real argument to make that, I think. I do think Chapel Roan's album is the most significant this year, but Charlie XCX's album more so the like. But it's. It's Is it the album or is it just, like, the whole campaign of it? The vibe of it impacted this year. Oh, it's great.
Amanda
But then also the vibe, it just.
Shane
It was just everywhere.
Amanda
But I did love Chapel rounds.
Shane
It was all. It was a lot of good stuff this year. Really good shit this year.
Amanda
Listen to the Brat album. I don't feel like you're into it.
Shane
What?
Trevor
No, I've listened to the Brat. I don't want to get too into my feelings about.
Shane
Whoa.
Amanda
Okay.
Shane
Whoa.
Trevor
I just don't want people to be mad at me.
Amanda
I think Brat of you.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
What the fuck do you have against Brad?
Trevor
I'm just not super into it. I don't know. Like, as far as. As far as the album goes, I'm like, this is fine. You know? Like, this is music that I, like, enjoy listening to, but I'm not like, oh, my God, this is phenomenal stuff. Like, everything is Brat.
Shane
I think Brad, that's kind of like. I think the music from that album, it's like, you have to be in the right place. Like, it's party music.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
It's. It's good for when I'm working out or something, but it's not like.
Trevor
I don't know.
Shane
It's got. You gotta be in the right place, right time.
Trevor
Yeah. I also think that, like, the genre of memes that I consume more regularly is more of, like, probably Gen Alpha and, like, gamer type memes. I think, because, like, that's my whole, like, Twitter feed is, like, I've curated it. That's the kind of people that I follow, and that's, like, the kind of people that, like, I don't know, I talk to. Like, that's what my friends and I are doing. So. Yeah, something like Brat Summer. I'm like, okay. Like, that's fine. That's. That's a fun one. Not just. Just not for me.
Amanda
That's a fun one.
Shane
Yeah. I don't think I saw too many memes of.
Amanda
It was so many Brat.
Shane
It was more just like the. Well, what did occur that I saw was like, calling Kamala Harris brat.
Amanda
Once she said that Kamala Harris was brat, the political brat. Memes.
Shane
I have to go to the emergency room. Is this real? Yes.
Trevor
In Brat.
Shane
In Brat, dude. Okay, So I pitched this video, and I need to pitch it to Emily and Bailey because I think it'd be really fun where we all have just. We get a bunch of paints, right? Bunch of different colors, basic colors of paint, and then we are given a very specific Color. And we all have to try to mix paints together and see who can most accurately.
Amanda
Oh, yeah.
Shane
Wow. And I think Brat Green would be a really fun one because it's a very specific. I love that type of green because a smosh meme was Courtney telling me, like, if you don't. If you don't correctly make Brat green, we're done, or something like that. I forget what she said to me.
Amanda
So you have to do it.
Shane
So I have to do it before and after Brat. And it's. That's the Shrek thing. That's great.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
It became of, like, who is brat and who is not.
Amanda
Oh, my God. Anyone wearing the Brat colors back in the day was memed. It was like, that's so Brat.
Shane
And I love this when someone tries to talk to me while I'm overstimulated, and she just has a sign that just says, I'm on vocal rest. That's awesome.
Amanda
She looks amazing.
Shane
I love Charlie xcx. She's so funny. This other meme I was not aware of until fans were saying that it was me, that this was who I am. Are you aware of this?
Trevor
The Chill Guy?
Shane
Yeah, Chill Guy. Had you seen Chill Guy?
Amanda
I think I have. And then I saw you put it on there, and I was like, it does kind of look like.
Shane
So it's artwork by Philip Banks. I posted it on Twitter, and it then became, like, a meme on TikTok and stuff. But it's just a drawing of a Chill Guy. Chill Guy.
Amanda
It kind of reminds me of that show. What was that show or, like, book?
Shane
I. I feel like he looks like Brian from Family Guy.
Amanda
Oh, Brian from Family Guy.
Shane
But it's. It's its own unique drawing. But I get it. It's kind of my vibe. I dress like that.
Amanda
Are you like Brian and Family Guy?
Shane
I'm not like Brian. I'm like this guy. I'm like Chill Guy.
Trevor
Chill Guy.
Shane
I'm just like chill Guy.
Amanda
Yeah, if you're Brian. If you're Brian and Family Guy, I'm not Brian. Stewie and Family Guy.
Shane
How are you? Stewie from Family? Stewie Griffin. How are you like Stewie?
Trevor
Brian.
Amanda
Brian. Brian Lewis.
Shane
I need a Family Guy different Family.
Trevor
Guy impressions for the rest of the video.
Shane
Have you seen. Have you seen Spencer's video? Dude, we.
Trevor
Oh, Peter.
Amanda
Peter.
Shane
Spencer and I have that video where we. Where we're, like, talking, and then there's a Family Guy clip below us, and then we just start doing it verbatim, and we rehearsed that A lot. I listened to that. It's the Godfather clip.
Amanda
Wow.
Shane
I did not care for the Godfather there. You what?
Amanda
Oh, good.
Trevor
When, when the Peter Griffin skin came out on Fortnite, I did, I did random duos on Fortnite and I talked like Peter Griffin.
Amanda
That's really good.
Trevor
Yeah, I did. I literally just went into like random, random duos and I was just talking like Peter Griffin as the Peter Griffin skin to like probably like 13 year old kids. They thought it was hilarious.
Shane
Oh yeah.
Amanda
And it is.
Shane
It's very funny.
Amanda
I think it's hilarious. I'm laughing.
Shane
We agree that it's incredible.
Trevor
Yeah. Thank you. Chill guy was unfortunate because I think it like had potential to be like good like and it was good when it first started, but it so immediately became like, it got like kind of deep fried almost. It like it became like a weird like kind of grifter meme where people like, oh, we gotta make like a chill guy. Like, like, like token, like, like meme coin, you know, like, oh, here's my chill guy NFTs. And it's like it got latched onto by that group of people.
Shane
You know, I almost think another opinion is I almost think this year wasn't a strong meme year for me because it feels like corporations are now waiting for the memes to happen and they immediately take them. So they become like kind of capitalized on too quickly nowadays. Whereas back in the day it was like it was only for random people. Whereas now it's like the second they're out there, the Starbucks TikTok account is like, and oh, we're chill guy. And it's like, oh no, no, they last a week. Yeah, I still, it ages me, but I'm like, remember when Numa Numa was the biggest meme for like two years for so long. Well, of course you don't, but that's the thing. But nowadays it's like a meme will happen and if you are a week behind, they're like, oh, that, that's dead. Yeah, like that things are moving too.
Amanda
Fast because brands are on social media and they are like, I want to get. They're just looking for it and so they kill it. They kill it before it like could even have time to breathe.
Trevor
I think that's why I love like Gen Alpha humor because so much of it is just completely nonsensical. Like it doesn't like you can't even explain it. It's just like a word that someone will say and it's like, it's just A funny word, and everyone thinks it's funny.
Shane
Alpha is before gen. Alpha is after Gen Z.
Amanda
After Gen Z.
Shane
So it's younger.
Amanda
Younger than Gen Z.
Trevor
And it's like, you can't. As a corporation, you can't just slap like a random word on something because it's, like, not that relatable. Because it's like. Well, what does it mean? Like. Like, not everyone?
Shane
I don't know, man. You're gonna drive past a Wendy's and see a sign that says, like, our nuggets are skibidi.
Trevor
Yeah, I feel like they're Wendy's chili only in Ohio.
Shane
Like.
Trevor
Like, that doesn't appeal to the general population as. As much I think is like, oh, it's a chill guy.
Shane
Yeah. Okay.
Amanda
The world coming to, you know.
Shane
Yeah.
Trevor
Well, dude, imagine. Imagine if chill guy got a low taper fade.
Shane
You don't go on. Hey, hey.
Trevor
I feel like. I feel like. I feel like Marty McFly. Like, you don't. You're not ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it.
Amanda
That's so you, Trevor, though. That is literally you. You just described who you are as a vibe.
Shane
Okay, so we'll move on to some smosh memes that were. You found this one.
Amanda
Okay.
Shane
No. Yeah. Okay, Makes sense.
Amanda
Oh, yeah. I thought I found a Krungle meme and it's just us doing the. The act.
Shane
I love how we. We did that on Reddit stories before that aired.
Amanda
That wasn't.
Trevor
This is me doing the act.
Amanda
That was. Yeah, this is the act, Trevor.
Shane
Dude, that's the act. Okay, dude, don't give us the profile shot of it.
Trevor
Yeah, it's gotta be head on.
Amanda
Literally head on. We did it on Reddit stories because that was the end of the shoot week. That was the craziest gas leak Reddit stories.
Shane
I don't know if they cut that part or not, but I. I'm not.
Amanda
Sure that they did.
Shane
Yeah. But anyways. Anyways, we had been rehearsing that for a long time because we were like, this is how we're gonna get people to break long. So I found that.
Amanda
I also. I will say I put all of my favorite Tommy specials. So Tommy Bo, I think, is the God of memes here. Smosh. I think he makes some of the.
Shane
Funniest memes he does make.
Amanda
And I put memes, some of my favorites on there.
Shane
So I found one, though. I. This one was. Someone made this earlier this year. I found it on a Reddit post by wonderful, wonderful painter 14. I don't know if they're the original poster of it. There was this thing going around and they made it look like a real article where it's she's a lesbian, he's he's gay. And their 33 year marriage will change your perception of love. And this actually made the rounds to where people believed it was real.
Amanda
People believe that I'm married to anybody but my actual husband. People are like, yeah, her husband's a front, the Belarusian model. I was like, the man is not a Belarusian model. He's from Belarus.
Shane
But no one is a prince.
Amanda
No one's like, yeah, okay, she's married to H is fine. But no, she's really married to Tommy or Angela.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
As far as memes that Tommy made though, the big one was just you and Angela being like, like weird creatures. This is maybe the best meme. It's fully insane. It's really disgusting. There was also this one Jesus Christ.
Amanda
And I'm this big creature and Angela and Chance are like my little babies.
Shane
I love when my wife plays crazy characters. Angel and K, that's Carde next to me.
Amanda
And I love like a potato with.
Shane
That's from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Oh my God.
Amanda
That's because. That's why, that's why I laugh so hard at his means. Because I'm like, he. He knows me so well. And then like goes a step further and it's so good.
Shane
There was also this one Tommy watching Chosen Assumptions before they had him. A real person.
Amanda
And it's the white dog that looks so bad.
Shane
Speaking of chosens, A, I would like, this isn't quite meme territory, but it was just a cool thing is in October, I was shocked at how many people dressed as the Chosen.
Amanda
So many people.
Shane
I saw dozens of posts.
Amanda
I also saw the Chosen with Sarah Christ duos.
Shane
Really?
Amanda
Yeah. Sarah Christ duo.
Shane
So cool. The problem is if you're Sarah Christ, people are gonna think it's now Agatha all along.
Amanda
Don't, Don't.
Shane
Don't you dare say they ripped you off.
Amanda
Don't you dare say that I freaking.
Shane
Like ripped you off.
Trevor
I don't know. I don't know how my memes do on. On who memed it. Like, I don't. I don't scroll for my part or anything. I don't know how they do because I feel like mine are generally pretty different than other people's. Like, I don't know, maybe like the formats are different. I feel like on the most recent one I sent it in and I was like, I Don't know if this is going to land with everyone.
Shane
My favorite is still. It's an old one from one of the OG who memed it where you. It was like when Courtney freaking Miller something. You do the good thing. You do the thing where you, like, make the meme messed up on purpose where you repeat the sentence a little bit.
Trevor
Yeah, it's when Courtney freaking Miller is sus or something like that. It was the buff among us with like the penis almost out.
Shane
So good.
Trevor
Yeah, that was a good one.
Amanda
I'll do a Trevor special.
Trevor
Yeah.
Amanda
Yeah.
Trevor
Okay. I look forward to that.
Shane
Okay. These are some other ones that Amanda found. Ian and Anthony look great here. It's the two different snack packs, but one just has just the. The like lines in it. Anthony's tattoos make the rounds on. On the Internet sometimes people. It's a topic. It's very fun. I love this one. Was this from this year? There are two types of gays.
Amanda
I thought it was.
Shane
I don't. Oh, God.
Amanda
Was it not?
Shane
If not. If not. It's a good one to talk about. Such a good one. It's so great. It's Chance's tweet where he's like, I woke up in this house and he had this is genuine posts.
Amanda
Genuine.
Shane
And then there's the one where Tommy posted just like, I peed blood this morning.
Amanda
And the pictures are Tommy like this close up and Chance with like his shirt off, and he's just like, I woke up in this house.
Trevor
Oh, my God.
Shane
A meme that I've been seeing. See, I would argue it's either Tommy or Spencer that I would say are the king of the memes this year.
Amanda
Okay.
Shane
Because. Or Spencer. Because Spencer. Well, I'm also saying being the focal point of memes as well.
Trevor
I think I only made one this year. I literally think. And it was just pumping out.
Shane
Okay, you're talking about making memes. I'm talking about being the Spencer has. Did somebody say meatloaf? Oh, yeah, that might be. That might be the phrase of the year. Yeah.
Amanda
I can't stand, though, that people think they don't know who Fred Durst is.
Shane
They. Fred Darts is more famous than Fred Durst right now.
Trevor
Yeah. How do you not. You. As soon as you hear Fred Darts voice, it's like, oh, I immediately know who that is.
Shane
Some people don't know who the funniest was people. Some people posted they dressed up as Fred Darts for Halloween. I was like, no, you're Fred Durst.
Amanda
You're literally. I did it all for the nookie Fred Durst for Halloween.
Shane
Just so you know, you are just Fred Durst. Like, yo, I love Smosh dude. But also Spencer as the gentleman this year was just off his rocker. People have been talking about how the top hat is like the mask for Spencer. He becomes a complete person. And his top hat, the green goblin mask. Someone made this meme. Spencer gentleman's top hat. It's true. He puts it on and he is a different person.
Trevor
It's insane. Like I don't know what it is about like that format that just like for whatever reason, everybody who has a top hat on Spencer and to the like nth degree, but everyone's just so much more insane.
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
Like I feel like some of the.
Trevor
Craziest clips and most like out of pocket things that like we've said this year has been just from gentleman's video is.
Shane
It's. It's.
Amanda
We're atrocious.
Shane
It's like we put it on. It's like, oh, we have permission.
Trevor
Yeah.
Amanda
To have multiple wives and all of them are missing.
Shane
Talking about like crazy about breastfeeding and so horrible. So feeding our Spencer says things that I'm like, we shouldn't. No, we shouldn't.
Amanda
But we're gonna say it because he reads like Frankenstein.
Shane
Like when like some of those first ones came out, he had been reading literally Frankenstein and other like old or Dracula.
Amanda
Oh, Dracula. Dracula.
Shane
He read Frankenstein. And he was also reading Dracula which has all this like old way of speaking. And so he's using it so good. Be like gay little creatures. Be certain too. Like just insane shit that he's saying.
Amanda
It's all in jest. It's fun.
Shane
Oh yeah, it's all great. And then our final meme here. This was all thanks to Courtney. Haunted me.
Trevor
Oh yeah.
Shane
Courtney drew.
Amanda
You know what it looks like.
Shane
Yes, we know what it looks like.
Amanda
Sure.
Shane
Yeah. Someone even fully photoshopped it.
Trevor
Oh my God.
Shane
There was a TikTok. I don't have it here. Someone. Someone posted a TikTok that they spent time painting, like recreating it as a full on canvas painting. And it looks really good. I was shocked that someone put that much effort into it.
Amanda
Did you buy it?
Trevor
Was it for sale?
Shane
I'm gonna buy it.
Amanda
And you should put it right next to the mirror. When you say I funny, I funny. You look at it going, I smart.
Trevor
Funny I shame I sexy.
Amanda
That picture like your wife is.
Shane
Oh, Brittany. Brittany did the full Photoshop.
Trevor
Oh my God.
Shane
And it is awful.
Amanda
It is. That's why it taunts me.
Shane
That's why it looks terrible. Terrifying.
Amanda
It's haunting.
Trevor
Yeah. No, that's absurd.
Amanda
Wow.
Shane
Yeah. What a year, man.
Amanda
Memes of 2024.
Shane
This is the last December of the year.
Trevor
I gotta look and see because I wrote down, this is.
Shane
Tell me I'm wrong.
Amanda
Hey, are you.
Shane
Tell me I'm wrong.
Amanda
Are. No.
Shane
Tell me I'm wrong.
Amanda
December 31st would be the last December.
Shane
No, we are in the last December of the year.
Amanda
Okay, sorry.
Shane
I meant to say the last Monday of the year, but.
Amanda
Sure you did.
Shane
But it is also technically the last December of the year. Okay, prove me wrong. Is there another one coming up?
Amanda
Don't.
Shane
Is there another one coming up? Do.
Trevor
Yeah. Good shift. You shifted that.
Shane
Next month, we're going to talk about our predictions in 2025. I. I'm going to bring this up here now, before the end of the year. So we had a bunch of our predictions for the year. Right? And a bunch came true, right?
Amanda
Yeah.
Shane
We'll kind of go up. We'll talk about this again, something I did not tell you and Selena. There was one that came true of my predictions.
Amanda
What?
Shane
That I didn't tell you because it happened a while ago.
Amanda
Guys, I'm looking at it right now. What?
Shane
So you see that top one there? I shook Markiplier's hand this year.
Amanda
Wait, I knew that.
Shane
You knew that. When did I tell you that?
Amanda
You did, at Vidcon.
Trevor
No, when was it?
Shane
I never shook markiplier's hand at DID. VidCon.
Amanda
Wait, when? Where was it?
Shane
I was hanging out with some friends who are YouTubers. I was about to leave, right? So I'm like, okay, I gotta head out. And as I'm leaving, Markiplier walks in the room, and I was like. I was like, oh, hey. He's, like, talking to them. I was like, hey, how's it going, man? I, like, reach out my hand and he goes. He goes, oh, we've met before, right? And I go, no, we literally haven't. And then I shake his hand and I was like, he didn't realize the significance that I had realized. I was like, hey, man. Yeah, it's good to see you. Like, whatever, blah, blah. And then you got in the car and I was just like.
Amanda
I'm not washing this hair week.
Shane
I thought it was so funny because it was such a casual, just random interaction. And normally, you know, we meet YouTubers all the time. Normally it would have just been like, oh, cool. But I was like, oh, my gosh. I made that prediction and it happened.
Trevor
That's awesome.
Amanda
Holy shit.
Trevor
That's really big.
Shane
Yeah.
Amanda
We still need to get on Good Morning America.
Shane
We got on Good Morning America. What are you talking about?
Amanda
Oh, my God.
Shane
Yeah, the kid got struck by lightning.
Amanda
We need to cross these things off.
Shane
Yeah.
Amanda
We must do this.
Shane
Well, in a couple of weeks, we're going to recap this, and then we're going to make our predictions for 2025. So we'll. We'll recap it then. I just wanted to bring this up before the year ends because that's fucking awesome.
Trevor
Can I make a prediction?
Shane
Sure.
Trevor
Is that allowed? You don't have to put it on the list.
Shane
Make a prediction because it's still 2024. So make a prediction for 2025.
Trevor
We are going to play Fortnite with Ninja on Smosh Games.
Shane
Oh, my God, dude.
Trevor
Imagine how sick that would be. Tyler Ninja Levin. Dude, Imagine if Ninja got a low taper fade.
Shane
Okay, I want to know. Let us know in the comments if you want to see that. I don't know what people.
Trevor
I don't care.
Shane
I have not. I have not kept up on Ninja in years. So I don't know what people's opinions of him are same.
Trevor
I think he's just pretty much only.
Shane
If the fans want to see it.
Trevor
Tyler Blevin. I think he's just. I think he literally just still plays Fortnite. I think that's pretty much the extent of what he does. I think people are pretty neutral on Ninja.
Shane
Are they neutral on Ninja?
Trevor
I think he's still just a cringe, like, nerdy Fortnite player Ninja. If you're watching this, you're awesome.
Shane
Love Smoshmouth. So, yeah, absolutely.
Trevor
You imagine it's out there, man.
Shane
But yeah, it happened. So pretty sick. Pretty cool, right, guys?
Amanda
That was really cool.
Shane
What a year, man. I will say, as far as Smosh goes, really fun, awesome year.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
Did some really cool stuff.
Amanda
Such a good year.
Shane
This was Smosh's blood, like, arguably. As far as just how we did it was like our best year. Friggin Reddit Stories was the number nine podcast on Spotify.
Trevor
Crazy.
Amanda
Insane. We all got our Spotify wrapped and that was so. I got to be next to Ian when he discovered that, and he was so proud.
Shane
It was crazy.
Amanda
That is so, so cool.
Shane
I cannot believe it.
Amanda
Cause I always thought that people were watching it. Yeah, because people are.
Shane
That's what's also.
Amanda
But then they're listening to it on Spotify.
Shane
I would argue it's like it's we don't think of it as our podcast. We recorded as a YouTube show. It's also funny because, you know, whereas all the other podcasts on the top 10, it's like, oh, that's what they do. This podcast is their focus.
Amanda
That's what they do.
Shane
Whereas Reddit Stories is one of the dozens of shows we do when we're filming it. We're. We're filming a couple later today. Yeah, right. Like, we're filming other things. We hop in there. We do it. It's very casual for us.
Amanda
So it's not our number one that we're doing.
Shane
Big is so interesting.
Trevor
I'll be honest. Didn't even know that it was on Spotify as a podcast until, well, number.
Shane
Nine in the U.S. no idea.
Amanda
I.
Trevor
Literally everyone was like, who's number nine on podcast? And I was like, they. You guys, we put it on, on Spotify.
Amanda
I know. No, I, I, that's great.
Trevor
I hope people listen to it because, you know, that I might not look stupid. You know, people won't know that I look stupid.
Shane
Especially funny when you, like, view all. If you put all 10 of those hosts together, it is such a funny group.
Amanda
Wait, it was Crime junkie, call her Daddy.
Shane
Crime junkies, call her Daddy. It's Joe Rogan, Tucker Carlson. I'm like, this is, this is a strange collection of people.
Trevor
You and the whole of the Smosh cast just like, group photo everywhere.
Amanda
Am I the asshole?
Shane
I thought about. I was like, what if they invited all 10 for a, for a photo shoot? I was like, so weird.
Trevor
That would be so Shane with Tucker Carlson. Hey, Joe Rogan.
Amanda
And call her Daddy.
Shane
Oh, my God, the Oblon.
Trevor
Holy.
Shane
It was so. It's such a funny list. It's hilarious.
Amanda
Thanks for coming on, Trevor.
Shane
Thank you for having me for being here. And, and thank you. Thank you to everyone in this room for all the work we're. We're doing. This is really cool. It's such a. So much fun.
Amanda
It's so much fun to get to do this. And it isn't just Shane and I. It takes like a whole team.
Shane
Yeah.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
Shout out to Selena. Selena's been really producing all of this editing, like, looking through the edits. Unbelievable thumbnails. I mean, it's, it's been all Selena for these past couple months.
Amanda
Yep.
Shane
And it has been really awesome.
Amanda
She's the best.
Shane
And when I make, when I make little oopsies, she's there to fix it for us. I will say the oopsie is not that big of a deal.
Amanda
It's really not.
Shane
It's really. It's. It's. I don't want to say it. We'll talk about it eventually.
Trevor
What was the.
Shane
I'm telling you, it's something so dumb. And when we.
Amanda
So dumb.
Shane
When we get to the episode, when we actually upload. Upload this episode, you'll be like, oh, okay.
Amanda
It's not a big deal at all, but it's.
Shane
I promise you, you're gonna be let down.
Amanda
Truly.
Trevor
Well, I'm gonna get to know. You're gonna tell me as soon as the camera starts.
Shane
I'm gonna tell you afterwards and you're go. Okay.
Trevor
Yeah.
Shane
Yeah.
Trevor
Okay.
Shane
All right. Anyways, thank you guys for watching all of this year. We love you guys.
Amanda
You guys are the best.
Shane
We appreciate you for watching this show and we'll see you next year for more of this.
Amanda
We'll see you next year. This is the last December.
Shane
The last December of 2024.
Amanda
2024.
Shane
Don't say that.
Trevor
Happy last December.
Shane
It is.

Podcast Summary: Smosh Mouth Episode #75 - 2024 Meme Review
Hosts: Shayne Topp (Shayne), Amanda Lehan-Canto (Amanda), Trevor (Trevor)
Release Date: December 30, 2024
In Episode #75 of Smosh Mouth, titled "2024 Meme Review", hosts Shayne, Amanda, and their rotating guest Trevor delve into the world of memes, reflecting on the year's most memorable and impactful trends. The episode seamlessly transitions from personal anecdotes to a comprehensive analysis of meme culture, offering listeners both entertainment and insightful commentary.
Trevor: Shares a harrowing childhood experience of getting stuck on a ski lift during his fourth-grade skiing trip. Despite limited ski gear, Trevor narrates how he managed to free himself after being stranded in deep powder snow, highlighting the challenges and fears associated with skiing.
Amanda: Discusses her lifelong experiences with skiing alongside her sisters, contrasting her cautious approach with their adrenaline-fueled antics. She recounts falling off a ski lift near the descent point, exacerbating her fear and embarrassment.
Shayne: Adds his own misadventures with snowboarding, including a memorable fall that sent his goggles flying into the sky, underscoring the physical and emotional toll of winter sports.
Shayne introduces the core theme of the episode: a review of the most notable memes of 2024. The hosts express mixed feelings about the year's meme quality, suggesting that while some trends were strong, others lacked originality and were overly ironic.
Trevor highlights the evolution of meme language, appreciating the creativity in new meme terms but noting a shift towards more ironic and less genuinely funny content.
The hosts discuss Mu Dang, a baby hippo from a Thai zoo who became a viral meme due to her aggressive behavior despite her adorable appearance. Memes often depict her biting and spraying water, juxtaposing her cuteness with her violent nature.
Shayne humorously notes the irony of her name translating to "bouncy pork" in Thai, adding a layer of cultural comedy to the meme.
Pesto, a baby emperor penguin adopted by smaller penguins, gains popularity through endearing TikToks showcasing his awkward yet charming demeanor. The meme celebrates his oversized, clumsy movements, often likening him to characters from beloved media like "Mr. Popper's Penguins."
Shayne recounts the Willy's Chocolate Experience scam in Glasgow, where attendees paid exorbitant prices for a promised Willy Wonka-esque tour that turned out to be a poorly executed event with minimal attractions. The meme thrives on the absurdity and disappointment of the fraudulent experience.
The Detroit Bridgerton Ball promised an extravagant Bridgerton-themed event but delivered a lackluster experience, leading to widespread disappointment and ridicule online. Memes highlighting the stark difference between expectations and reality became widespread, damaging the Bridgerton brand.
Chill Guy, an artwork by Philip Banks, became a meme symbolizing relaxation turned surreal through "deep-frying" effects, leading to absurd and often nonsensical interpretations. The hosts discuss how corporate entities quickly capitalize on memes, sometimes diluting their original humor.
The conversation shifts to broader observations about the evolution of memes. The hosts note a decline in the quality of meme years, attributing it to over-commercialization and the rapid pace at which brands adopt and abandon trends. They lament the loss of genuine, grassroots humor in favor of fragmented, fleeting viral content.
Trevor advocates for a return to "I funny" memes—those based on genuine humor rather than irony or corporate manipulation.
The hosts showcase their favorite Smosh-related memes, including memes about their personalities and inside jokes within their community. They highlight how their content creator friends, like Tommy Bo, contribute to meme culture, creating relatable and humorous content that resonates with their audience.
Amanda introduces the "I funny" meme, a recurring joke among fans that encapsulates the trio's humorous brand.
As the episode nears its conclusion, Shayne hints at upcoming content focused on their predictions for 2025. They reflect on past predictions that came true, such as Shayne's casual encounter with Markiplier, and encourage listeners to stay tuned for future insights.
Trevor humorously predicts a collaboration with famous streamer Ninja, blending humor with aspirational goals.
The hosts celebrate the success of their Reddit Stories podcast, which achieved a top 10 spot on Spotify. They acknowledge the hard work of their production team, particularly Selena, who handles editing and thumbnail creation. The discussion underscores their commitment to expanding their content repertoire while maintaining a casual and authentic approach.
Shayne expresses pride in their achievements and anticipates continued growth in their podcasting endeavors.
In the closing segment, Shayne, Amanda, and Trevor extend gratitude to their listeners and team members. They emphasize the collaborative effort behind their content and tease future episodes, promising more engaging discussions and reviews.
The episode wraps up with a heartfelt farewell, reinforcing their appreciation for their audience's support throughout the year.
Episode #75 of Smosh Mouth offers a rich and engaging exploration of 2024's meme landscape, interwoven with personal stories and insightful commentary. Shayne, Amanda, and Trevor provide a comprehensive review that is both entertaining and informative, making it accessible and enjoyable for listeners who may not be familiar with the original podcast.
