In this powerful episode of The Snake & The Land, Rebecca Cavender takes us on a journey into the intimate, spiritual relationship we can cultivate with the Earth and its elements. She shares reflections on the deep wisdom of nature, exploring how we can learn from the land, animals, and plants around us. From embracing animism and recognizing the life force in all things to finding community with the land and our ancestors, Rebecca inspires us to slow down, listen, and reconnect with the natural world. Key Highlights: The Humble Heart: Rebecca discusses the importance of approaching life with humility and reverence for the Earth, recognizing that the land is not ours to own, but that we belong to it. She encourages listeners to apprentice with the land, becoming humble students of nature’s cycles and rhythms. The Land as Our Teacher: The land teaches us respect, patience, and the ability to listen without assuming or seeking something in return. This practice extends to our relationships with people and other beings. By learning to feel the spirit in nature, we learn to see the beauty and essence in all life forms. Feeling Not Alone: Despite the busyness of life, Rebecca reminds us that we are never alone. Nature is filled with life and spirit, waiting to connect with us. Whether it’s the wind on your skin, the sun warming you, or the pulse of the earth beneath your feet, these elements are always present, offering their quiet support and wisdom. The Wisdom of Our Ancestors: Rebecca draws on personal memories of her mother and grandmother, who both practiced animism by connecting deeply with their gardens and plants. Rebecca reflects on how this deep connection with nature can lead us to the wisdom of our ancestors, which still lives within us. Practical Tips for Reconnecting with Nature: For those living in urban spaces or feeling disconnected, Rebecca suggests starting small by nurturing a plant and engaging with it. She shares how even plants can teach us the power of presence, connection, and respect for life. The Call to Listen to Nature’s Rhythms: As we move into the Year of the Snake, Rebecca invites listeners to tune into the cycles of the Earth and listen to the wisdom that surrounds us. The Snake, in particular, symbolizes transformation, renewal, and shedding what no longer serves us. A Personal Touch: Recorded on a snowy night in North Vancouver, Rebecca shares the beauty and power of the land she’s on, honoring the Squamish people whose ancestral land it is. She speaks with deep gratitude for both the land and her listeners, inviting them to walk with her on this journey of reconnection. Episode Conclusion: Rebecca wraps up with an invitation to journey alongside her in the coming episodes, offering more stories and connections that will help listeners remember who they are and embrace the wisdom of the land and the snake. Quotes from This Episode: "We belong to the land, none of this belongs to us." "The elements are here, they are alive, and they’re always reaching out to us." "You are not alone; life is so animated and so filled with spirit everywhere." "Maybe you start with a plant. It might feel silly, but you’re not alone. They’re alive." Next Episode: Stay tuned as Rebecca dives deeper into the teachings of the Snake and continues to explore ways we can connect with the land, our ancestors, and the wisdom within. I’m excited for you to connect with Ellie Cleary today—an amazing intuitive astrologer, embodiment priestess, and coach who lives half the time in England, and half the time in India. We delve into the connection between snake and astrology—specifically, astro-cartology— which is a type of astrology that looks at geographical places connected to your birth chart. This leads us into a discussion around movement, around travel—and Ellie shares how we must leave home to find out who we are. There’s a quest, a rite of passage. And yet, we can look across our globe and see the complications that have arisen from this quest, too. Those of us of European descent have ancestors who left home—sometimes in a call to find themselves, sometimes to escape the oppression they faced—only to recapitulate patterns of dominance and oppression in other lands and to other people. Ellie talks vulnerably about being half English and how she feels the time has come where there’s a “reaping of karma” from being the “industrialized colonizers” that “repressed, annihilated, and destroyed so many indigenous cultures” and how the lands she comes from are crying out about this—as the UK is one of the most biodiverse poor countries in the world. We discuss how out of integrity many of our ancestors were. But that snake can show us how to come back into integrity and travel/journey/move—without losing our soul and without exoticizing other cultures, so we don’t perpetuate internalized separation from what’s been repressed within ourselves. Ellie also touches on how patriarchal Christianity robbed the islands in the UK of the Goddess—so there was this search from many to travel out to seek even spirituality—despite the richness that is native to those lands, too. But it must be reclaimed so as not to cause harm, to take, to oppress, to colonize. In this rich conversation, we also move to how snake is a protectress and the dreams Ellie had to warn her when in an abusive marriage. Be sure to delve into this heartfelt, deeply important conversation. Eva hails from Germany but has been living in England for a long time. You’re going to love her unique perspective on snake medicine because not only has she been doing this work for a long time, she also stewards a gorgeous snake, Syd. Weaving threads together, we talk a lot about the sensory remembrance of handling a snake and the transmissions that come from them … even for people who may have had a fear of snake, but finally got to hold them and experience their sweet, beautiful, sensitive nature. What does being live with snakes bring? What is their medicine? Hear Eva also share about her experiences guiding people through rites of passage with live snakes. Eva also talks about the wounds of separation, the split that occurred between snake, sexuality, and spirituality, and how this connects to female disembodiment, why this was severed, and the ancient trauma that is connected. We start off with Tami’s snake origin story, where she shares alluring experiences being a budding naturalist as a child and her wonderment of snakes, growing up on a farm in Missouri. Weaving stories and dreams, Tami shares the importance of the living sky, astrology, and the motifs we all experience of snake as a primal symbol of power, awakening, and medicine. I'm honored to join the very special Jenny Šâwnohk, Red Stone Snake Woman, who is an Indigenous (Cree) Healer, psychotherapist, and truth and reconciliation specialist. She wears many hats, including that as a motivational speaker, consultant, mom of three boys. Today, you're in for an incredible gift. This is the type of episode that you'd want to listen to multiple times because it is so rich with medicine. It’s a true privilege to be with Jenny in this powerful dialogue. Jenny shares, right off the top, that if we don't begin listening to snake medicine, we will destroy ourselves. She explains how snake medicine intertwines with the Indigenous 8th fire prophecy—which is about reconciling our relationship to the land & each other. This means pulling away from the western, eurocentric collective consciousness that’s damaged the Earth ... and instead invites us to gather on the path with indigenous people, because they have the original instructions on how to live with respect & honor. Jenny also poignantly shares about the following: The damage done to Indigenous people when pulled from the land Residential schools & the shame that was taught there—and how reconnecting to the land is part of the medicine to heal Snake medicine, the sacred hoop, and being Children of Mother Earth What snake represent with the sacred hoop How we must mend the sacred hoop with all the trauma that’s been done (specifically to indigenous people) Medicine Wheel 7 Grandfather teachings of humility, honesty, respect, courage, wisdom, truth, love Her role as Redstone Snake Woman The importance of being loving, compassionate, and supportive of one another & all our relations Snake as a transformative healer How snake teaches us to evolve Shedding skins We also talk about the importance of rooting to your ancestral ways that knew how to connect to the land, to snake, to drum, etc. All cultures, globally, pre-Christian, had these land-based views. Jenny encourages us to get uncomfortable and confront racism, white privilege, etc. to help mend the sacred hoop … and how we’re all responsible for this healing. We talk about snake as protectors and guardians of the sacred hoop. ...and how we must move away from treating the "land as a resource, instead of the source of life." Despite the trauma, damage, and harm that's been done, Jenny offers us hope, from within her deeply rooted indigenous views. ...And that our hearts and intentions are profoundly needed because our Mother's heartbeat is erratic. This is an incredibly rich, deeply medicinal conversation filled with much grace and reverence. My prayer is that as many people as possible listen in so we can heal together in reconciliation, love, and remembrance. Such gratitude and honor to Red Stone Snake Woman. In today’s episode, I am honored to be joined by Rev. Noel Tendick, an interfaith minister, martial artist, poet … and so much more. Noel and I have been connected for many years and I admire his brilliance and poetic heart—so it was really special to sit with him about snake medicine. We go wide and deep discussing: Belonging Concept of “ownership” & how this is the antithesis of snake medicine Intimate connection with land & all beings Cycles of creation & destruction What actually causes suffering How snake helps us navigate change Beauty of snake’s physical nature Serpent myths Aikido & snake medicine Being responsible for one another & the reciprocal balance of the natural world We also delve into why we may have a collective, primitive fear of snakes, how acknowledging the “shedding of our skins” matter, and how snake medicine is directly connected to our survival. One of my favorite quotes from Noel in this episode, when talking about change and letting go: “There’s devasting sorrow in the release; but fundamentally, I don’t know if it’s suffering, compared to resistance.” Make sure to stay to the end to hear about his cohabitation with a rattlesnake outside his door one summer in Montana… Connect With Rebecca: Golden Snake Temple Website Instagram FREE MINI EBOOK: Meet the Snake Priestess Discover the Snake Goddess & her history, how you can reclaim this medicine, and what the Snake Priestess offers you personally and collectively.
