Michelle Thames
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Social Media Decoded Podcast, the number one podcast to help you understand social media better so that you grow your business, get more clients, and monetize. I'm your host, Michelle Thames, and today we're diving into a topic that some people love to call old school. But I call it a tried and true strategy for building your brand and growing your business. And that is dun dun dun dun. Blogging. That's right, blogging still works. And not just for foodies or travel enthusiasts. Okay. Whether you're a marketer, entrepreneur, or someone trying to grow their personal brand, blogging is one of the best ways to get visible, connect with your audience, and yes, attract paying clients. And guess what? You don't have to be a professional writer to make it work. In today's episode, I'm breaking down the basics of creating a blog. Creating content that ranks on Google, drives traffic to your offers, and positions you as the authority in your niche. And if you want to take this further, I'm also offering one on one power hours where you can build out a content strategy. We can do it together, but more on that later. Grab your coffee, grab your notebook and let's get into it. Okay, so you already know if you don't know. If you didn't know. I started out blogging, okay? My story is, you know, I had a natural hair blog and a natural hair YouTube. Happily ever natural started out as a natural hair blog. Look it up. It's still in existence and I said that. I'm going to get back to vlogging so I'm going to revamp. So as you're listening to this message, as you listen to this podcast, okay, I am going to revamp my blog and I'm going to post on it. Because happily ever natural doesn't actually mean just natural hair. It's just a happily ever natural life. Happily ever natural. Maybe. I want to share my beauty routine. I really want to get back into sharing the things that I love. And my blog was that I just put it on ice for a minute, you know. So I'm ready to create more content for the vlog and I'm really excited. So check out Happily Ever natural dot com. I have a lot of amazing content on there about motherhood, about natural hair, about life, family, marriage, all type of things. Okay, but let's get into it. Let's start with the obvious question. Why does blogging still matter in 2024, 2025 and beyond? Isn't it all about social media now? Well, yeah. And no, social media is a great, it's great for quick wins and engagement. But friend blogging offers something that social media cannot and that is long term results. Here's the deal. A well written blog post is like a salesperson that works for you 24, 7. Once it's out there and optimized for search engines, it can bring traffic and leads long after you've hit publish social media posts, they're gone in 48 hours. And I have an example. You all know I used to work in beauty in social media and digital marketing management, right? For beauty brand, I created a blog post. So the brand had a blog, we had social media and I was writing for the blog. I had blog writers writing for me. But when I first started, I specifically wrote this post because I was working with someone on the marketing team and before I even started I had like a contract with them to do some freelance writing because I did freelance writing at the time. I used to write for naturallycurly.com so. So I did some freelance writing for them before I even started working for them. And one of the posts was about doing a hot oil treatment on natural hair. They had an oil. And what I did was is created a blog post. I believe the title is like the best hot oil treatment for natural hair or how to do a hot oil treatment for natural Hair. And I create this blog post today it's still like number one ranking or like two or three. It's top ranking on Google. And so this was in like 2016. Today you're listening to this podcast, 2024, going to 2025, or you may be listening to in 2025 or beyond, and that was in 2016. So long after you hit publish, blog posts are still discoverable. Plus, blogging builds your credibility. It's your chance to go even deeper than a caption or a reel and to show your audience that you know your stuff. Whether you're a career marketer or running your own business, your blog can be a powerful tool to showcase your expertise and connect with your audience on a deeper level. All right, and I know, I know. You're like, oh, how do I even start a blog? Well, let's talk about the basics. Okay. How do you create a blog that actually gets seen and drives traffic to your business? Let's break it down step by step. The first thing, before you even start writing, you need to know who you're talking to. Yep. Who is your ideal reader? What are their pain points? What questions are they Googling right now? The more specific you can be, the better. For example, if you're a marketing professional, maybe your audience is small business owners who are overwhelmed by social media. Your blog topics should solve their problems and give them actionable tips that they can use immediately. Here's what I want you to think like five ways to simplify your Instagram strategy or how to write captions that actually convert. So now that you know your audience, it's time to get into their heads, right? Literally. What are they typing into? Google. This is where keyword research comes in. Tools like Google Keyword Planner or even the search bar in Google can help you identify terms that your audience is searching for. Super easy. For example, instead of writing a generic blog like how to use social media, focus on something more specific, like how to use Instagram for real estate agents. Why? Because niche content ranks better and speaks directly to your ideal audience. I'm telling you this, and I've started doing it even more. Oh, and when I start back blogging. Oh, it's going to be even more niche. Once you have your keywords, sprinkle them throughout your blog in the title headings and naturally in the content. But don't overdo it. Google loves helpful content, but not keyword stuffing. Then here's the secret sauce your blog needs to provide. Value, friend. Yes, value. Think about your audience's problems and how you can solve them. Every blog post should leave your reader feeling like they've got something out of it. Whether that's a new idea, a solution, or just clarity. Structure your blog like this. Start with an engaging introduction that hooks them in use subheadings to break up the content so that it's easy to skim. And always, always end with a clear call to action, whether that's to download a freebie, join your email list, or book a call with you. And don't forget to keep it simple and conversational. You do not need to write like a professor at all. Write like you're talking to a friend, right? Who needs your advice, period. That's how I talk to you all on this podcast. Like, you're my friends. You're my friends, right? Finally, don't just hit publish, okay? And call it a day. No, no, no, no, no. You gotta promote and repurpose. Share your blog everywhere on social media, in your email newsletter, on LinkedIn. And here's a pro tip. Repurpose your blog content into other formats. Turn it into an Instagram carousel, a LinkedIn post, or even a short form video. The goal is to get as many eyes on your content as possible and keep your audience engaged across all platforms. So now, how do you turn all of this blog traffic into actual clients or opportunities? That's the question. The key is to link your blog content to your offers strategically. For example, if you are writing a blog post on how to simplify your Instagram strategy, you can include a link to your social media audit service or a free Instagram checklist. Or if you're a career marketer writing about LinkedIn strategies, link your coaching sessions or downloadable guides. The idea is to make it easy for readers to take the next step with you. Remember that your blog is a gateway, not a dead end. Always guide your audience towards something valuable, whether that's a freebie, an email list, sign up, or paid service. So I want to let you know about my one on one power hour sessions friend. If you're ready to take your blogging or content strategy to the next level, let's chat. Okay.
