welcome back to Social Media Decoded. This is Michelle Thames. Today's episode is a little different, but also very on brand. For where I am right now, I want to talk about evolution. Not the flashy kind, not the kind that comes with a dramatic announcement or a sudden pivot, but the quiet kind. The kind where one day you realize the label you've been using no longer fits. This episode is called why I'm Not Just a Marketing Strategist Anymore. And before anyone misunderstands that, let me be clear. I still do marketing. I'm very good at marketing and I will always understand marketing. But I've outgrown being just that. Evolution doesn't need permission. One of the hardest things about growing is realizing that evolution doesn't come with applause. It often comes with confusion from other people and from sometimes, yourself. For a long time, marketing strategists just made sense for me. It explained what I did, how I help people, and why brands hired me. But over time, something shifted. I wasn't just helping people post content. I was helping them make decisions. I wasn't just building campaigns. I was helping them see patterns. I wasn't just advising on visibility. I was helping them step into leadership. And there comes a point where staying inside an old label starts to feel constricting. Not because the label is wrong, but because it's incomplete. Evolution doesn't require permission. You don't have to wait for the Internet to catch up. You don't have to explain yourself in advance. You don't have to justify growth. You are allowed to expand. Outgrowing labels is a sign of leadership. Now here's something that I've learned watching people over the years. The people who grow the most are the ones willing to outgrow how they're known. And the people who stay stuck are often the ones trying to protect an identity that no longer fits. Outgrowing a label doesn't mean you failed at it. It means you've mastered it. Think about it. You don't outgrow beginner roles without competence. You don't outgrow narrow lines without depth. When I look at my work now, what I'm doing is bigger than tactics. It's proximity, perspective, discernment, leadership development. I help people think more clearly. I help them decide better. I help them stop outsourcing their authority. And that is not just marketing. That's advisory work. That's leadership. That's long term brand stewardship. And when you step into that, you have to be okay with people needing time to catch up, letting your brand expand with you. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is freezing their brand in time. They become known for one thing, and then they stay there too long. Not because it still fits, but because it's familiar. Your brand should not trap you. It should travel with you. That means your messaging evolves, your offers evolve, your conversations deepen. This is why I'm intentional about building community and not just audiences. Because people who grow with you don't need constant explanation. They feel the shift. They don't ask, why are you changing? They say this makes sense. And that's the difference between followers and proximity, between visibility and relationship.
